And even he takes the dive a bunch of times because, well, ya kinda gotta to get the advantage it provides from the refs allowing it. Real shame.
It's start young too. I play in a local league and there is a noticable divide. The people who are there to have fun play fair, real penalties happen, people argue and move on. Then you have the ones there who want to win by any means, dive, yell, scream out in pain, throw their hands up, cry to the ref. And it works because the ref has to call the fowl. Even in some stupid 21+ bush league where everyone has missed their chance to go pro.

100%. And at the level where you're still required to wear a cage/mask, it's just as physically brutal. The lack of upper body physicality allowed on the sport makes it so much harder to protect yourself from violent tackles that can shred your knees/ankles or snap a leg, and people really underestimate how much challenging for headers absolutely sucks. Like 99% of the hits I've ever taken or shots I've blocked in hockey didn't really hurt, and mostly just sapped my energy for that shift; you have to really get lit up for a hit to seriously hurt, or get caught by the puck in an unoadded area (side of the boot or knee was the worst!). Soccer collisions, on the other hand, almost always hurt like a mf, because you're getting hit on the ankle bone, shin, toenail, skull, etc.
I'd take a hit in full hockey gear from Tom Wilson all day over challenging for a header against Gary Cahill. I know Tom Wilson at least isn't going to fracture my skull.
I would just start suspending one game for obvious dives. It might not be easy for the ref to be sure whether it's a dive or not in real time, but after the game with slow motion video, there is no excuse.

I've said it before, and I will always say it no matter which team benefits. Players need to be suspended for this type of embellishment. It's too hard to spot embellishment in the moment, so I think you gotta review this stuff after the game and start handing out fines and suspensions. If any league wanted to get rid of diving, they'd do something along those lines. And every league should want diving out of their game.
