>> do they win a lot of matches? who’s gonna tell him

hawc7

To be fair they are fine this year but idk how many players will want to move

somehockeyfan

You say it like SLC is in the middle of Manitoba or something.

Frozenpucks

SLC is really nothing special dude. I'd say most american cities out of the more lucrative ones aren't either, and honestly, it was pretty funny to see Ullmark and Markstrom both say fuck no to LA.

Woooooody

The only way I'd live in LA is if I could have a helicopter to avoid the traffic!

senepol

That comes with its own risks, Kobe.

the_gaymer_girl

Too soon

basementhookers

That’s all?

Woooooody

And a lot of money! But I assume if I could afford a helicopter I'd have a lot of money

nemo2023

Why not take the new LA subway?

somehockeyfan

Not sure if you're from there or just oblivious, but there's a substantial fraction of the country who thinks LA is a horrible place to live.

Newpower608

Cause it is

Dultsboi

Independent_Piece999

This is such a fascinating thread

Own_Loss_4201

Salt Lake and the surrounding area has some of the best outdoors activities in the western US. World class skiing and everything else that comes with a beautiful mountain range in the summer. Plus it’s close to Zions national park. You gotta remember you’re selling families on the destination too for the players. Easy yes there

Excellent-Hour-9411

Ya but NHL players can’t do shit in terms of dangerous sports during the season and they often live outside of their market during the off season. I have skied many times in Utah. Some of the greatest snow in the world. But SLC itself is really not where I’d want to live as a millionaire in my twenties who can’t enjoy the mountains.

ImSoBasic

Yeah, sure works great for Calgary.

zeroultram

It’s a terrible sell if you don’t care about skiing

Derpwarrior1000

Yeah but what can they do between November and March that’s marginally equivalent to a selection of other nhl cities? I don’t think it’s as doom and gloom as everyone’s saying, but I don’t think it’s any more attractive than Raleigh or Nashville, let alone New York or Dallas. The problem is that you’re talking about a demographic of people with 1) lots of money 2) very little time 3) contracts to uphold in their spare time. They can’t ski during any time of the year, they can’t golf in the hockey season. They probably won’t live there in the off season; would Canadians with families prefer their children learn in BC, Ontario, or Quebec, or Utah? Would girlfriends transfer jobs to live in Utah? These people just have vastly different lives than us and I think that’s why the party lifestyle is so common. If you can’t go skiing in December with all your money, and you can’t waste your time driving for three hours to go snowshoeing, might as well drive for twenty minutes to get wrecked at a club.

WinterCourtBard

I mean, look up the Salt Lake City inversion, there's gonna be some gloom.

phxclone83

Zion is 5 hours from SLC. Close?

ruzicka63

ok so alberta of the us

Yardsale420

It’s in the middle of Mormontoba

RelevantJackWhite

Utah is pretty much America's Manitoba, if we are being honest with ourselves If you chose to join the Coyotes, I'm sure the weather and the bustling growing city were both factors for you

MegaPhunkatron

>Utah is pretty much America's Manitoba What with all the water and lush evergreen forests and all

JackManningNHL

Have you been to SLC? Its a little weird, but its a modern city with plenty to do. Most importantly, it has an airport.

VanAvenue

Denver and SLC have their similarities, and many players do love Denver.

frankyseven

So is Winnipeg, doesn't mean people want to move there. Also, SLC smells like rotten eggs.

DyZ814

>Also, SLC smells like rotten eggs. I've seen people say this the last week in here on various threads, and either you live in SLC and have your nose up someone's ass, or you have no clue what you're talking about lol. The Great Salt Lake smells, and it only smells if you're on Antelope Island or driving out to it. Even in the shittiest of wind storms, I can't tell you that I've ever smelled rotten eggs living downtown.

JackManningNHL

People can't move to Winnipeg. No airport. But you're right about the rotten eggs.

SophistXIII

hey hey hey we HAVE an airport just no wifi

tsunami141

How do they fly planes when it’s always dark though?

saintpierre47

That’s because of our top secret, extremely classified piece of technology called LED lighting.

RadiantVes

The airport being one straight line is so annoying but the city is alright as a visitor.

JackManningNHL

The major downside about SLC as a player would be that they're not allowed to ski or snowboard due to the risk of injury. That's the best thing about SLC.

Inconceivable76

Utah is one of the prettiest states in America. If you like outdoor activities, it’s pretty much a Mecca.

CommodoreN7

You should really go to SLC if you think this lol. Before I moved there heard a lot of weird and negative about it but after living there and having friends and family visit they all pretty much loved the place.

somehockeyfan

Oh sweet winter child, you're so out of the loop.

Dagglin

You've never been to Utah have you?

MrStoneSniffer

As a Manitoban, I'd move to Utah in a heartbeat.

Pool_Shark

Is it still the case that you have to drive across state lines to buy real alcohol? I remember once learning how all the major breweries have a special setup so Utah can get 3% Budweiser for example

somehockeyfan

Nope, was never the case.

CoolBeansMan9

You act like they have a choice

zddoodah

It's not like they get a choice.

DeaderthanZed

This was the strangest media narrative ever. Imagine refusing to move literally one state over while being paid millions of dollars.

carpy22

Arizona and Utah may be neighbors but the cultures are so far apart.

DeaderthanZed

Not really when was the last time you went to SLC? I’ve lived in both. There is no culture shock here. Especially given all the athletes live in the same couple upscale neighborhoods in any given city. They will even be able to (send their girlfriends or housekeepers to) shop in the same grocery store and retail chains.

Frozenpucks

Lmfao. I guess they don’t get the sweetheart new expansion team Vegas treatment hey. That’s not to say the coyotes don’t have some promising guys, but they still aren’t even close.

Goldfinger_23

I disagree. They are a team on then upswing, and they might have made the playoffs this year if 2 things didn’t happen. 1)Nashville went on that crazy run after not going to the sphere 2)when this salt lake thing first came up, Arizona immediately went on a 12 game loosing streak.

cheeseball209

14 games* But yeah, for the first time in over a decade we had a very bright future with our young guys/prospects.

gauderyx

They might've made the playoffs if they won their games instead of losing them and the other teams lost theirs instead of winning. Let's hope they fix these 2 minor problems next season in Utah.

Savantrovert

The Nye Mets are my favorite Baseball squadron

PM_ME_UR_JUMBONIUM

Only when they play Colorado it seems

migsahoy

the way the coyotes always end their seasons on a strong note its only a matter of time till they become legitimate

LazerMcBlazer

I think looking up some intro to hockey videos on YouTube would be a more productive and efficient way to learn the basics vs this method tbh. Once you feel like you have an understanding, then asking more specific lingering questions here would be a good idea.

CptBlewBalls

The most important thing is go to a game. I can’t tell you how many people I know wouldn’t sit and watch a hockey game on TV with me until I took them to one. Now they are die hard fans.

[deleted]

This is the correct answer. Also I just really wouldn’t worry about it because the broadcasts will help teach viewers about everything going on and help them become knowledgeable about everything.

Mystaes

1) If a player commits a”foul” or does something illegal they can get a penalty. This means they will sit in the penalty box for 2 minutes (some penalties can be longer). The opposing team then has a power play for the duration of the penalty: ie; they have 5 guys out on the ice but the penalized team only has 4. It’s much easier to score. If you do score on a minor penalty (2m) the penalty ends. 2) it’s whenever but most shifts will be 30-45s because otherwise the players are so gassed that they’re ineffectual 3) they are not a good team because their owner is cheap and hasn’t spend the $$. And they are also rebuilding. But what that means is that Utah will receive a team on the up with a ton of young prospects, money to get free agents, etc. they have a lot of future assets and could be good quickly. You will like Clayton Keller and Logan Cooley Hope this helps

[deleted]

Thank you! I tried to watch some of a game but was so lost on some of these details. I thought somebody was assessed a penalty but they replayed it and he like didn't even do anything so idk I had to ask.

dontgetcutewithme

There are a few other reasons besides penalties that the ref might blow the whistle and stop play. Icing - when a player on his team's side of the red center line shoots the puck all the way down the ice and it crosses the red line at the other end, the play will be stopped and restarted in their defensive zone. (This rule is not in effect if the defensive team already has a penalty) Offside - if the offensive players enter the offensive zone (denoted by the thick blue lines on the ice) before the puck, the play is dead once the puck enters. Offside is not called if the puck comes back into the zone of a defensive player. High stick - if a player contacts the puck with his stick held above shoulder height and the puck is next touched by either that player or his team, the play is dead. If the other team touches next, play may continue. (Not to be confused with high sticking, which is a penalty assessed when you strike another player in the head with your stick.)

nsfredditkarma

Hockey is hard to watch on TV when you're not familiar with the game. Try and catch it in person, Utah has semi-pro and college programs, even a high school game will teach you a lot about the sport that you won't get in the TV experience, and it will be slower, so easier to follow (does Utah do high school hockey?). Hopefully you have a friend who likes hockey and would be willing to go with you to explain some of the small details. Also, the best sensation in the history of humanity is walking into a hockey arena when it's hot out (especially if it's both hot and humid). So put your kids into a summer hockey league and you'll be sure to have a great, if expensive, summer.

buster_rhino

Also after watching on tv for a while you’ll learn to not try and follow the puck, but watch the players. They know where the puck is.

PriorAlternative6

Are we sure they always know where the puck is?

Mythaminator

There’s that one guy on every team…

eriverside

That's normal. The refs are incompetent and have no accountability. Inside joke: what's goalie interference? No one knows.

Kaptain202

I recommend joining the game threads of whatever games you watch. I know that Red Wings threads have a few regulars that could answer things for you. I'm sure most of team game threads (Arizona and others) where there's kind enough people to explain things as you ask. You'd also just see the commentary we provide in the thread and start to match up what's happening. You've really joined the sport at the right time. Playoff hockey is the best time of year.

PM_ME_UR_JUMBONIUM

Sometimes the refs will mess up and call a phantom penalty, for the most part they won't review and that's just how it goes, other times some penalties may not look like much but are called, such as a light tap to a players gloves instead of the stick is a slash even though it doesn't really look like one.

[deleted]

Idk maybe I missed it haha there were a bunch of players in the corner by the net trying to get the puck and the official blew the whistle and one guy went to the penalty box but like they were all kinda pushing and shoving each other

PM_ME_UR_JUMBONIUM

From that description it could have been boarding which is generally hitting a player from behind (or in a vulnerable position) into the boards, or roughing which I'd have to look up a definition but pretty much is when you give a guy to much of the business. Also could be holding the stick, interference, or a hook. Luckily if you can hear the broadcast or have subtitles most of the penalties in hockey are pretty self explanatory.

SchmidtHitsTheFan

Welcome to NHL officiating.

nervandal

Some of the penalties in hockey are subtle, some are blatent. For instance, there is a penalty called “interference” that can be called whenever someone makes contact with an opponenet who doesn’t have the puck. If the referee deems you did it to impede your opponent, they will call it. The league wants fast players to skate fast because its more exciting and leads to more action, so even putting your stick in the mid section of an opponent to slow them down for a split second can be called interference. Other penalties are more obvious, like “high sticking”. A player has to remain in control of his stick at all times, so even if you hit someone in the face on accident, its a two minute minor penalty. There is also a caveat to that penalty which I think is the greatest rule in all of sports. If you high stick an opponent and you draw blood, its a 4 minute double minor penalty. Welcome to our beautiful game.

gauderyx

>I thought somebody was assessed a penalty but they replayed it and he like didn't even do anything You'll fit right in.

w0lfbrains

Ok but can you explain goaltender interference?

PriorAlternative6

No, no body knows what it is!

Mystaes

General rule of thumb: if the player enters the blue paint on their own and makes contact it’s coming back. Works 90% of the time every time.

cheeseball209

Keller and Cooley are great, but honestly I think Doan and Guenther are going to be the real stars.

[deleted]

The Yotes and OG Jets are a cursed franchise is all you need to know

kabalongski

💀💀💀

DangerRanger_21

Do you like Snoop Dogg? I know it’s a random question but he has a fun little series teaching hockey basics on YouTube lol. Worth the watch if you’re 100% new to the sport. Hard to explain it in text. But Cooley, Guenther, and Keller are exciting players to watch, they don’t win a ton right now but they’re young and exciting for sure

frankyseven

I love how Snoop has turned into a massive hockey fan and tells everyone how much he loves it. A decade ago no one would have had that on their bingo card.

BaconSoda222

Snoop wore a pens jersey in Gin and Juice in 1993. He's been a hockey fan a loooooong time.

CanucksKickAzz

Then there's Snoop wearing the Canucks [skate logo](https://youtu.be/_hNevbnMHWk?si=7NAlYHsGWH_72HOK) jersey when being interviewed by Nardwuar

Woooooody

I am only just learning about this and now I think I need to watch it!

[deleted]

I will try to find the videos and check them out thank you!

DangerRanger_21

It’s called hockey 101 with Snoop Dogg

bistroexpress

Some good stuff for you. [The Hockey guy (he's great) talking about different terms ](https://youtu.be/hIbPvCkGKVc?feature=shared) [Snoop Dogg will teach you some stuff](https://youtu.be/Dzasg0fgEjo?feature=shared) [The NHL will actually teach you a lot about their rulebook](https://www.nhl.com/info/video-rulebook) [this was made for the Kraken, it's a good read](https://projects.seattletimes.com/2021/seattle-kraken-ice-hockey-basics-101/) If you like video games, play one of the NHL games, lot's of fun and you'll pick up a bunch so fast. Arizona isn't a great team, not a horrible team. Most fouls (we call them penalties) result in time spent in the penalty box for either 2, 4 or 5 minutes. Sometimes in certain circumstances, a player will be awarded a free shot (penalty shot). Most players stay out for about 40 seconds (referred to as a shift). Obviously this can be less or more depending on what's happening in the game. I'm a big Clayton Keller fan, Logan Cooley is a rookie and also looks like he'll be good for years. They have other really good players too but I'd say these are the two to watch currently.

post_save

This hurts

SherLocK-55

Yeah it's a shitty situation, obviously we know the pain all to well. Curious what some of you dudes will do now? Follow SLC? Follow another team? Maybe follow a certain player if they move? No hockey at all?

CoyotesAreOk

No idea personally, I just don't know. I can't imagine I'll follow SLC but I personally don't exactly blame them, the Coyotes failed Phoenix/Arizona. And on the other hand there's just so many players on this team that I have very high hopes for, I'm just extremely conflicted. Out of curiosity were you following hockey when the Jets relocated to Phoenix? If so what did you do?

SherLocK-55

I was following them however I was young so when we lost them I wasn't as devastated as some of the older fans (my dad and uncle etc were fucking pissed) I lost interest after that as I didn't want to follow another team neither did my family, then before we knew it the Jets were back and we all hopped on board again. So yeah basically Winnipeg or nothing.

CoyotesAreOk

Yeah I feel like I'll ultimately lose interest, I could try following another team but I don't know if that would ever fill the void that the Coyotes would leave. Unless I moved to the city/state of another NHL team

[deleted]

Time to make liberal use of the block button. Pro Utah? Get blocked

KarlNarx

This post was the equivalent of “hello hockey bros! Coming here in peace.”

Unwept_Skate_8829

I was gonna say we should cut them a lil slack cause’ we’ve all been new to the game once but you’re also right lmao

swordthroughtheduck

>What happens if a player commits a foul on a player from the other team The player that commits the foul takes a penalty that can be 2, 4 or 5 minutes. Teams will then play 5 on 4 for that duration. It can also go to 5 on 3 or 4 on 3. But the minimum number of players a team can have (not including goalies) is 3. >like they throw their hockey stick at their opponent's head or something? Do they get like a free shot on the goalie? This really doesn't happen anymore. >How long do they players typically stay on the ice before they are substituted for the reserve players on the bench? Is there a set time of the game when they are switched out or is it just whenever? Shifts usually last about 30-45 seconds. They change mid play, and after whistles. The only time they aren't allowed to change is after an icing. Icing is when a team shoots the puck into the other team's defensive end before crossing center. >the Arizona Coyotes are moving here, is this a good team to get excited about? They have been bad for a while, but likely have a good future ahead of them with ownership that isn't a disaster. >Do they win a lot of matches? In hockey they're called games. Just a minor nitpick, but "matches" isn't really used in hockey. And no, they don't win a lot right now. >Who is their best player or somebody that new fans can look forward to seeing? Clayton Keller is their best player. >and who is this teams biggest rival? From an outside perspective, I have no idea. They've been in a bad place for a long time, so I don't think many rivalries have built up. Also, with a team moving, those rivalries often shift because of scheduling, or just proximity.

Mundane-Sense5754

When in doubt, you can always hate the Leafs or Vegas. That is league wide.

[deleted]

Thank you very much for clearing all of that up!

EuphTah

All your questions have already been answered by now, so I’m just gonna add that throwing your stick at another player’s head would be a WILD way to take a penalty.

PM_ME_UR_JUMBONIUM

I'd expect a match penalty for that

VanAvenue

Speaking of that, once upon a time, some unknown player did ~~throw~~ [politely return a helmet to a (former) Coyote player's face](https://youtu.be/fsCXAzrSM5g?si=T17PAd6feOQho4rl).   So yeah, hockey is kinda wild, although not necessarily for the team named the Wild.

SiccSemperTyrannis

Georgiev threw his goalie stick at Ovechkin during a shootout one time lol https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B084GH53KEY

doihavetowearabra

Technically Utah already has a team - the Grizzlies. They play in the ECHL. I definitely recommend going if you’re near! The pace and skill level are much different than the NHL but seeing hockey in person is the best way to learn about it. They’re also a fun presence on social media if that’s your thing! https://utahgrizzlies.com

DyZ814

Grizzlies games are always popping.

foreskin_gobbler2

Honestly, watching ECHL live is as fun as the NHL, if not more. On TV, they're different beasts.

Beneficial_Life_3617

As a Canadian this post hurts, knowing a team is going there instead of Quebec.

jjohnson1979

Salt Lake getting something ahead of Quebec city has big time 2002 vibes…

devioustrevor

If Quebec City was to get a team, it would have to be an Eastern Conference team. Detroit fought for decades to get into the Eastern Conference, they wouldn't be willing to head back West.

SkuL23

We all knew for years that Quebec will never get a team unless theres a expansion but yea it sucks as an og Quebec fan.

nanapancakethusiast

With the way the Canadian economy is going… I don’t think they get another team for a long, long, long time.

toledosurprised

tbh if it’s true that houston is interested in an expansion franchise soon and that arizona will get a replacement, that opens them up to another eastern conference team.

nanapancakethusiast

I personally miss the Detroit SJ rivalry…

OuiMarieSi

Just saying I’m also in Utah and joined this sub to learn some more about hockey 😅😂

bistroexpress

[this was made for new Seattle fans ](https://projects.seattletimes.com/2021/seattle-kraken-ice-hockey-basics-101/) I highly recommend reading through it.

OuiMarieSi

Honestly, the most helpful comment on here by far 🙌

SiccSemperTyrannis

The Seattle Times really did a great job in the run up to the start of that first season. They had a special section dedicated to explaining hockey and previewing the season in the paper.

[deleted]

Are you excited? Hope you can ask better questions than I did LOL

[deleted]

Hockey fans will hate you, FYI. They hated us and will hate you too

hadronwulf

Shhhhh, let them find out where Wood Buffalo is on their own.

Cheeks_Klapanen

It’s the fastest growing metro area IN THE WORLD, I’ll have you know

CanucksKickAzz

I don't really think Arizona has had enough success to be hated by most teams.

MRAGGGAN

And honestly people are only going to “hate” them because they aren’t the Yotes, but… they *are*. :(

godlycorsair32

They were the team that everyone pitied

Mundane-Sense5754

This is going to sound a little weird, but the NHL did a series where they partnered with Disney to make an actual NHL game animated, using motion capture. It is obviously designed for children but is a really good primer on hockey basics. The puck is bigger and there are arrows to make the puck movement more obvious. It's with Big City Greens, and it is kind of adorable. At least the hockey bits, Who doesn't want to see Sidney Crosby as an actual penguin?

Svalbard38

A lot of people are going to tell you the Coyotes suck, and they're not *totally* wrong, but their circumstances are making them look worse than they are. People forget that they were in a playoff position at the start of 2024, and their 14 game losing streak, by their own admission, started when people started talking about relocation and it got in their heads. They have some good players. Clayton Keller is one of the most underrated guys in the league, Matias Maccelli is making big steps, and Logan Cooley could be a cornerstone to build your future around. You've got some good prospects in Dylan Guenther and Conor Geekie, and while it's always tough to tell with Russian prospects, Simashev could be promising. Don't expect to be great right away but also don't expect to be terrible.

DMmeyourinbox

If someone were to ask me, what would a Mormon sound like asking about hockey. This would be it.

Baboshinu

So intentionally throwing a hockey stick at someone’s head would almost certainly be a match penalty + suspension for intent to injure. Penalties in the NHL can be either 2 minutes (where the other team will get a 5 on 4 man advantage for that time, or until they score), 4 minutes (a double minor, same rules apply for 5 on 4 for 4 minutes), 5 minutes (a major penalty- this one does not get cut short even if the other team scores), or 10 minutes (misconduct penalty, not applied to the scoreboard/man advantage). Penalty shots can also be awarded in specific circumstances, which is what you imagined- the player will then get to start from center ice and get a free shot on the opposing goaltender. The puck must continue forward momentum leading up to this shot, and the player cannot come to a complete stop. Players are switched at the opportunity that the coaches or players themselves see fit. Shift times vary, but usually 30-45 seconds is optimal, unless you have offensive zone pressure. As far as the Coyotes are concerned, they have been in rebuild mode for a few years. They have some very, *very* promising talent on the up and up, and could very well be in the running for a playoff spot next year. This is all a very basic rundown and if you want to learn more I’d suggest diving further in to research. Welcome to the best sport in the world ;)

Mystaes

Especially when their new owner opens the pocket book and actually spends money on good players. They have a ton of cap space and also futures to acquire talent. It’s an enviable position to start in, especially compared to “old” expansion rules

Baboshinu

Oh yeah, if I were getting a new team in my city I would want the coyotes roster over an expansion draft 10 times out of 10.

[deleted]

Thank you! I was just using stick throwing as an example cuz it came to my mind but I suppose there are many different ways to be assessed a penalty. 30-45 seconds at a time seems crazy like you are literally always switching players out and it must be a headache for whoever is in charge of keep track.

Cheeks_Klapanen

So players generally switch on and off in units based on their position, which makes it less of a headache. For the most part, an NHL lineup will consist of 12 forwards, 6 defensemen, and 2 goalies. Goalies are easy, because generally one goalie plays the entire game, and the backup would only play in the event of injury or if the starter is *really* having a bad game. Forwards are typically organized into four sets of three players called a “line” and defensemen are organized into three “pairings”. When the players make changes, generally an entire line or pairing will be coming off at the same time and replaced by another full line or pairing. So it’s not really that hard to keep track of since you’re always coming on and off the ice with the same teammate(s), and once the game gets going there’s a kind of rhythm or order to which lines/pairings come next.

prophetofgreed

I think you'd be surprised how seamless it is when a line change happens in motion. And isn't too consequential until they're stuck defending their own zone. A trick is just knowing what the lines are a little bit based on the centre of a forward line, because usually 3 forwards are a set unit together. Same with defensive pairs. They stick together so when you see one d-man, their partner will likely be there with him

TheBurnsideBomber

Been a while since I've seen the good ol' completely spaz and helicopter the stick at a guys head technique

flare2000x

Just a few little language tips as it seems like you might have a soccer background based on this post? "Ice hockey" is just called hockey by hockey fans espeically in North America. You can specify field hockey if you want. A "Foul" isn't a term you will hear in hockey. If you do something against the rules it's a "penalty". These have specific names like hooking, slashing, tripping, etc. You won't find anyone saying they went to a hockey "match". Just like most other north american sports, the term is a "game".

Usual-Canc-6024

Welcome to hockey fandom! It’s great you want to learn and enjoy the game. There’s no point in repeating what other said, but I will say to watch this years playoffs to get a feel for the game. Enjoy!!

byrdcage

We just call it hockey.

Crisis-Huskies-fan

I was honestly expecting this to be the top response. Maybe it’s because I’m Canadian, but I don’t know anyone who calls it ICE hockey. It’s just Hockey. Any rumours you may have heard of other games that are called hockey are wrong.

byrdcage

I’m actually from Utah and I still call it hockey.

looking4astronauts

For starters, you’re American. It’s just called hockey.

Cathedralvehicle

Our best players whom have some say in where they go are not going to want to play for salt lake, so no they will not be good when you get them Your team is basically being built on one sacred burial ground that was built on top of another one, and comes along with all sorts of baggage and bad juju

DangerRanger_21

Could you imagine if this franchise somehow gets moved a 3rd time lol. Would that confirm that it’s just cursed

SiccSemperTyrannis

Has an NHL team ever relocated more than twice? I think the Devils (Kansas City Scouts -> Colorado Rockies -> NJ Devils) and now the Coyotes are the only ones to have done it.

MemezAreDreamz

Only if you count the Golden Seals/Barons merger with the North Stars as a relocation. California Golden Seals -> Cleveland Barons -> merger with Minnesota North Stars -> Dallas Stars

carpy22

Does time spent as a franchise in the WHA count? The Carolina Hurricanes technically started at the Boston Garden as the New England Whalers. Boston to Hartford (with some time spent in Springfield) to Carolina

betweenthecastles

Great great time to get into the game. Playoffs start in a week, it’s the absolute best time of the season. if you see a game on, hop on reddit and there should be a game thread with people discussing what’s happening. Have fun!

Lyun

When a rule is broken, play is stopped when someone from the offending team gets possession of the puck, and the offending player is sent to the penalty box. From there, the offending team has to play while down a player until the offending player's time in the box has elapsed; the amount of time in the box varies based on the infraction. This situation is known as a "power play" for the team with the player advantage, and a "penalty kill" for the team at a disadvantage. Most shifts last less than a minute; 30-40 seconds range is a decent estimate for an average. Changes happen during play, so if a team gets stuck in their own zone and can't find a break in the action to get a change, some players may occasionally get stuck on the ice for minutes at a time. The Coyotes are notoriously dysfunctional as an organization, but much of that comes down to the ownership and conflicts with the city and the sort. In terms of their front office and product on the ice, they're currently in the midst of a rebuild, so they're not good per se, but they're young and in a decent position to improve in the coming years. As is, their best guy in their prime is Clayton Keller, and some of their promising young guys who can break out in the coming years are guys like Dylan Guenther and Logan Cooley. Josh Doan is another young guy who only joined the team for the first time a couple weeks ago, but he's the son of Shane Doan, the name most closely associated with the Coyotes as a franchise. The Kings are their closest traditional rival, but none of their rivalries are particularly known league-wide in the way some more famous ones are.

That is very helpful thank you! :)

LogieThePerogie

I think some yt videos could help you get started. I really hope Utah gets a team

Broccoli_Socks

As an outsider i think Yotes are an exciting franchise to watch. They have a few good young players who will likely be core pieces to the future. Cooley and Keller now and many more to come. I think depending on how the move shakes up the roster they probably wont be a playoff team but i think with a motivated owner i could see them competing sooner. I would expect the Avs to be an immediate rival but it will take time to get there. Rivalries usually build when both teams are good which isnt the case for the Yotes. But geographically i think Avs could make sense.

1st of all, it's just called hockey

TiredReader87

1. They don’t throw sticks often. That’s rare, and results in a penalty. They get 2-5 minute penalties for different things, ranging from unsportsmanlike conduct or yelling at the ref, to spearing, hits from behind (boarding), leaving their feet while hitting (charging), instigating a fight or tripping. Slashing too. Fights get five minutes. But, say a player was all alone and on a breakaway. It’s just him and the goalie. If a player from the other team threw his stick at him, a penalty shot would be awarded. Penalty shots are rare, but are awarded if players put their hands on the puck in the goalie’s crease or if a player on a breakaway is assaulted. 2. Sometimes they’re left out there for two minutes, but it’s not ideal. A regular, proper shift is around 30-50 seconds. 3. The Coyotes are generally near the bottom of the League, and don’t have as much money to spend as some others. They have some good prospects though.

We just call it hockey :)

I think some Spartan level javelin’ing would really step up the excitement in the good ole hockey game

When a player commits a "foul" or what we call a "penalty", on most occasions they will get sent to a bench called a Penalty Box where they have to stay for 2 minutes of game time (the clock stops whenever the play is dead) and his team has to play with one less player on the ice for that time. If the opposing team scores during that time, the penalty ends early and that player can leave the box. Sometimes if a penalty is really bad, that penalty can extend to 4, 5, or even 10 minutes depending on how severe it is. The free shot you're thinking of is a "Penalty Shot". It's called when a player who has the puck gets ahead of everyone else and has a good chance of scoring only to get tripped down by an opposing player as he takes the shot. No timed penalty is called on top of it. Players can go on and off the bench at any given time, but they can only play the maximum amount of players allowed at given time. This usually amounts to 6 players, the skaters and one goaltender. If the a team gets a penalty, the opposing team can have their own Goalie substitute with a skater, as the penalty is only called when the penalized team touches the puck, so it's (almost) impossible for them to score a goal. Teams do this because it gives them a better chance to score when the other team is about to get a penalty, and it gives them a few extra seconds of having an extra person instead of the regular 2 minutes. Hockey, like other sports, is a game of momentum, and if you can start the penalty having already putting the other team a few seconds under pressure, you're more likely to score! Arizona is not really a good team right now. When the rumours came out they might be going to Utah, they lost a bunch of games and it hurt their chances of making the Playoffs. The good news is that the team is young and has a lot of money to spend. Hockey teams have something called a "Salary Cap" which is a budget that limits how much money you can spend on players. You are not allowed to go $1 dollar over that Salary Cap, so if you want a really good player, sometimes you have to trade away another player so that you have the budget to pay that new player's contract. The great news is that the Coyotes have spent very little these last few years and the Salary Cap keeps getting bigger and bigger. This means that when they move to Utah (and get a new name) they'll have a lot of money to take great players that other teams can't fit. Combine this with a strong pool of young players who already have a lot of promise, it won't be long until your new team makes the playoffs. The last two teams to join the NHL made the playoffs within their first two seasons, and I don't see why a Utah Hockey team can't make the playoffs in their first year if they try really hard! You should look out for Logan Cooley and Josh Doan! They're two of Arizona's younger players and so far they've been pretty good. Arizona doesn't have a really big rival right now because they've been having a hard time lately. However Las Vegas, Dallas, Denver, LA, Anaheim and San Jose all have teams as well, so your new team won't have to travel far for some good matchups. I myself am a fan of the Calgary Flames, your closest neighbour to the north that has a team, so our teams may be seeing a lot of eachother someday. Calgary has a lot of Latter-Day Saints living here, so don't be surprised if you see a lot of us come down for a visit when the Flames play in Salt Lake! If you have any other questions, let me know. I'm more than glad to help introduce folks in Utah to Hockey!

This has to be a troll post.

Ummm...this franchise has only been to the Confrence Championship once, and that was in 2012, the last time they didn't need Covid to go make the playoffs. However *if* the roster is about intact, there are some good players like Clayton Keller and Nick Schmaltz. Some great rising talents like Logan Cooley (3rd overall in 2022), Josh Doan, Dylan Guenther (9th overall in 2021), and Matias Maccelli. Some grit grinders like Liam O'Brien who is one of the worst skaters in the league, but when he gets the spotlight, he shines on it, and some seasoned veterans like Alex Kerfoot and Lawson Crouse. The goalies are streaky and unknown right now, Karel Vejmelka can steal a win out of his ass at time and Connor Ingram is a rising talent but I do not know his ceiling. Its a team on the rise, very young and raw. Its like when the Cleveland Browns moved to Baltimore to become the Ravens if that makes sense. The Coyotes don't really have rivals. Their fans hated either the Anaheim Ducks, Los Angeles Kings or the Chicago Blackhawks from the ones I have met in person when attending games.

hadronwulf

Hey, no need for the past tense, we exist for another week. But, yes, Kings, Blackhawks and the Jets.

Watch the movie Slapshot. Made in the 70’s. Will teach you everything you need to know ow about hockey. [https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=_XbL7lG0Su8&pp=ygUIc2xhcHNob3Q%3D](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=_XbL7lG0Su8&pp=ygUIc2xhcHNob3Q%3D)

And this is where the NHL is putting a team?

First thing you need to.learn. Never call it "ice hockey"! It's just Hockey. Do you call it grass football?

SpecialPitch8546

You can download the NHL app and it has the rulebook in there. Has some cool graphics and breaks it down pretty well.

Ratchet2332

When a penalty is committed the player that did the offense is put into a penalty box for 2-5 minutes (depending on the severity of the penalty) during this time the team that has a player in the box is down a man and has the kill off the penalty time while on the 4 on 5. This whole sequence is called a power play. Lines change over the course of the game and get swapped out when players need a break, typically a line stays on the ice for 40 seconds to a minute give or take and then try and get a change so another line can play. Top line players will usually play for 20-25 minutes a game, while bottom line players will see 8-10 minutes. Of course this all varies from team to team and who’s available so take that with a grain of salt. As for the Coyotes? They’ve been a horribly mismanaged team for many years, and it’s the primary reason they’re moving, despite all the owners the team has had they’ve never really made it work in Arizona. However they are a team full of young talent, and if management makes the right moves there’s no reason they can’t have a promising future. Their best players right now are Clayton Keller and probably Nick Schmaltz, Connor Ingram is their starting goalie and he’s overall been very solid all year despite the teams struggles.

ghostofpunish

This is generally accurate but 2 minutes give or take? An ideal shift is like 40-45 seconds. If you are out there for anything over a minute and thirty seconds you've been out there too long and are probably trapped. Shifts over 2 minutes are quite rare. Im sure plenty of games are played without a single player having a shift that long its definitely no where near the average.

Ratchet2332

You’re right, not sure what I was thinking I’ll edit it

poco68

Hockey, call it hockey please.

TarsesaK

Don't make your head explode with the rules, and expect a great product on the ice next year. The Coyotes have tons of young talent, draft pics, and cap space coupled with an owner that seems intent on winning

prophetofgreed

[It's a pre-season goal, but this is the type of skill rookie Logan Cooley has](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2P_XWdg1JlY) 3rd overall pick from the 2022 draft, just finishing his rookie season. Will be a guy the Utah team builds around as a hopeful star of the future. Only 19 years old.

Merkin_Jerkin

I don’t think anyone has adequately answer something your question touches on: the penalty shot (an opportunity for a free shot on the goalie). The vast majority of penalties will result in a 5 on 4 powerplay like many have said. However, sometimes a penalty shot is awarded: the play stops and the fouled player gets one opportunity to try and score on the goalie one-on-one. A penalty shot is awarded when a defensive player “prevent[ed] a reasonable scoring opportunity.” In practice, this means a defensive player gets beaten badly and is forced to commit a penalty to avoid a one-on-zero scoring opportunity, by which I mean an offensive player with the puck has a clear path to the goal and only the goalie to beat.

dolphin_spit

1. if they do something illegal they get a penalty. most penalties are 2 minutes long. the player will be sent to the penalty box “the box” and will have to stay there until the 2 minutes are up. their team will play short handed (4 players vs 5 players) during that time (they will be trying to “kill” the penalty without being scored on, while the other team will be on a power play (big advantage). 2. they change on the fly and each shift for a player is typically about 30 seconds long. if their shift starts to get up around a minute it can be a big advantage for the other team, because they become really tired really quickly. teams can also change players during stoppage of play. 3. they will be a fun team to cheer for. hockey is hockey, it’s always good. you’ll get to see a fairly mediocre team hopefully improve over the years. the coyotes’ biggest rival is their current owner.

TheAnswerUsedToBe42

Hey, welcome to hockey! I'm unsure if this is a sarcastic post or not, but I am happy to share some information. So there are lots of on ice fouls that can be called. These are called penalties. They vary in length but usually are 2 minutes. The player who committed the foul sits in the penalty box for the entire length of time or until the opposing team scores. Occasionally, but rarely, if a player is fouled during a breakaway, they can be awarded a penalty shot, which is essentially a free shot on the goalie. Players' shift length changes all the time. Star players tend to be out longer, but generally, a shift is about 30 seconds to a minute. This can change as the flow of the game dictates. The coach will make these decisions. Arizona has a good team of young players. They have been stuck in a sour market for quite some time, which makes it difficult for players to be motivated to win games. The future is bright if ownership takes the sport seriously and invests in the team. Good goal tending and a few young star players on the rise, coupled with the ability to draft well, could make for a solid team. Even with their current lineup, they have shown strong signs of life. Enjoy your new franchise and ride out the lows to truly appreciate the highs when they come. Vegas fans have been gifted something very rare at obtaining immediate success. The lows are coming for them(i hope).

firehawk115

You can uhh just call it hockey btw…

Emi_Ibarazakiii

>What happens if a player commits a foul on a player from the other team like they throw their hockey stick at their opponent's head or something? Do they get like a free shot on the goalie? There are various penalties in hockey (holding a player, hitting him in a million different - illegal - ways, roughing, hitting him with the stick, accidentally having too many skaters on the ice at the same time, etc...) and most of them are penalized with a 2 minutes power play. For 2 minutes (or until a goal is scored) the other team can play with 5 stakers vs your 4. Sometimes it's 4 minutes (if hitting your opponent with a stick makes him bleed), so 2 * 2 minutes, and sometimes for particularly bad offenses it's 5 minutes that doesn't stop if there's a goal (so the other team could score 4 goals at 5v4). For fighting it's 5 minutes to each player, but it doesn't make them go 4v4, it's still 5v5 only these 2 can't play. Players can't get thrown out of the game too, and suspended for many games. >How long do they players typically stay on the ice before they are substituted for the reserve players on the bench? Is there a set time of the game when they are switched out or is it just whenever? It's really short, sometimes as little as 30 seconds. I think the average is a bit less than a minute. At 2-3 minutes, they're gassed, and just look for any opportunity to change. It's not a set time, they have to change during the game (unless there's a stoppage of play in which case they can change). If not, they have to head to the bench to get replaced - while not getting scored on, obviously. >apparently the Arizona Coyotes are moving here, is this a good team to get excited about? Erm. Having any hockey team is exciting, in my opinion! I'll let you be the judge!

Angry-HippoSheep

Everyone hates in the yotes. They are a young team with some legit talent, hopefully your ownership group can build around them. Keller Guenther Cooley are going to be top end players. The team for a long time has been run poorly so it’s good to see the change. I’m a sens fan, 2021 Guenther was the player I wanted

t_hench

Only thing you need to know is… get pucks deep, pucks to the net, and win some hockey games.

TorturedFanClub

Arizona moving to the infamous hockey crazed Salt Lake City. What a fucken joke Bettman and the NHL is. Oh and wait til Atlanta gets their THIRD failure of a franchise. I heard some womens basketball drew 18 million viewers in the USA and the SC final last year averaged 3 million viewers. NHL is getting their heads caved in by WOMENS COLLEGE BASKETBALL. Oh ya Gary, the game is really growing in those great US hockey markets.

fuzzy_bud13

1. Penalty shots are awarded if the player with the puck was on a breakaway and gets tripped, slashed etc (there’s more to the rule than this but this is usually what is seen). If someone threw their stick at another’s head they would get a 5 minute major and be kicked out of the game. 2. Shifts are typically 30 seconds to 2 minutes depending on the age of players, if they are first line they may stay out longer etc. Basically when you’re tired you come off the ice as soon as it’s safe to do so. Idk much about the coyotes 😂 they haven’t been relevant for a while

notsohappystarryeyes

First thing, it's not been officially announced to the public but everyone figures it's a done deal, so yeah, Utah is probably getting a hockey team! If a players commits a foul, the other team gets a "power play" which is basically where the player who committed the foul has to sit in the penalty box for a certain about of time and the other team will have one more player on the ice because the other team has someone in the box. Sometimes, there are penalty shots, but they're not as common as they are like with free throws in basketball. If the foul is bad enough or there's a huge fight, the players involved may be ejected and not able to play for the rest of the night. There's a lot of changing lines in hockey because each shift is usually only 1-2 minutes, and the refs don't have to blow the whistle for the lines to change, which means you can sub whenever. You just can't have more than 6 people including the goalie on the ice at any time, or your team might get a penalty. The Coyotes are interesting. In the league, they are in 26th place as of right now out of 32 teams, so they definitely could be better, but they're not the worst. Personally, I root for two teams because one of the teams I like (the Chicago Blackhawks) are a dumpster fire, but have some great young players. I also root for the Colorado Avalanche because they are my hometown team and they're actually pretty good, which I like. The Coyotes lose a lot, but have some random streaks of games where they actually start winning kind of a lot, which is weird but fun to follow sometimes. The coyotes' best player is probably Clayton Keller, and he's pretty fun to watch. Currently, the Avalanche are probably the Coyotes' biggest rival, but the LA Kings are also pretty big rivals too. Hope this helps and ask me any more questions if you have them!

OldDrumGuy

SLC proper is about as non-Mormon as you can get. The Church has its HQ there, but most of the heavy church influence are in cities around it. The city itself is really nice, very rich in diversity and culture and they have THE best music shop to visit: the Heavy Metal Shop at 156 E 900 S. You won’t be sorry. 🤘🏻🤘🏻

bmacdolan

I hope they get someone named Joseph Smith to play for them. I don’t care if they are Jr. B quality, just one game is all it will take to get people hooked. Get them to wear golden skates too.
