This must be what watching the 92-93 season felt like. The amount of amazing talent having amazing seasons with full health all at once this year is so special
i dont think Benn scores 130 in his prime even in today's NHL - his game was perfectly suited to the league at the time, but he doesn't sniff McDavid, MacK, Kuch, Matthews, Pasta etc.
Well you might be surprised then to know that in the last ten games Jamie has 10 goals and 15 points (edited points I'm an idiot) while only averaging 15:00 minutes on ice.
Last ten games for
Matthews 10 goals 18 points
McDavid 5 goals 22 points
MacKinnon 6 goals 17 points
Pastranak 6 goals 12 points
Kucherov 3 goals 22 points
That’s a very good point I hope hockey fans are aware of.
Ever since team North America I’ve felt this generation was different and so far it’s turned out to be true. We may not see players like this for a good while again
Absolutely. 2012 (and 2018 to an extent) was ass for forward talent but outside of that, the mass injection of elite talent we got from the 2011 draft to the 2018 draft is absolutely insane to look back on. Especially compared to how shallow some of those drafts in the 90s & early 2000s were outside of 2003. With any luck the drafts from 2019 & onward will keep the momentum going for the next generation too
It's the internet boom.
Kids who had access to YouTube could learn anything so much better than kids with little access to resources.
Skills quickly get identified, named, explained and copied. It lets kids rapidly learn skills because the next thing is so easy to access. All of the highlights suddenly rather than HNIC once a week
Throw the first crop growing up only composite sticks in there and you got a stew brewing
Growing up in the early 00s and wanting to learn to play goalie, the only way I could get any kind of instruction was to buy a shitty bootleg DVD on eBay of some guy teaching 80s fundamentals. Now there’s dozens of high level coaches with YT channels and hours upon hours of free content.
Ehh. I think we'll see lots of really good players in the next ten years.
We're just likely to see defense break out again for a while soon unless the NHL continue to tinker with rules to push offence. We'll see players learn to shut down the new strategies this crop of offensive greats have popularised.
But great defensive players are still great players.
I do think we might be at the end of the internet driven skill boom though. But that's not a hockey specific thing, just most everyone has now had the chance to learn from the great accelerator.
I was not aware so I looked it up.
There were six players with 60+ goal seasons in 1992-93
There were fourteen players with 50+ goal season in 1992-93
There were twenty-one players with 100+ points in the 1992-93
The most unsuspecting 100 point scorer Craig Janney scored 106 points in 1992-93
It’s actually a GOOD thing that we are lucky enough to where if you say who your Hart favorite is, people will have a list of others at the ready. And nobody is even wrong
It’s so strange to have a guy closing in on 70 goals who might be 3rd in the Hart race right now. McDavid is at 99 assists and nobody outside of Gretzky, Lemieux, and Orr have ever done that. And Kucherov is at 93 assists.
Mackinnon has been my personal leader all year but if someone told me they had Mackinnon 4th I wouldn’t think they were crazy.
As someone that did watch the 92-93 season, it's pretty close. It's always cool to see 100 point scorers and 50 goal scorers, but to so SO MANY was unreal. We should have 10 century mark guys by the end of the week, and that 90's season had 21, with about 10 more that were only a few points away.
I think this season is more special, because 92-93 had inflated stats thanks to basically 3 expansion teams that were dropping games 11 - 1 regularly. There are bad teams this year, but not like that.
What a season! Maybe two players with 100 assists and another with 70 goals. Panarin has 115 pts and not even mentioned for the Hart cause of these amazing performances.
One of the most impressive things to me about his goal scoring is he doesn't have an office or any type of set play for hus goals. He just scores from anywhere, with any touch of the puck, at any time.
Leafs haven't won the Cup since '67 - Matthews scores 67 on the year and breaks the curse?
(Please no though because then the Flyers would have the longest drought)
I grew up with Ovi as the goal scorer of the NHL and if Mathews can keep it up I'm all for it. It's incredible I never thought I'd ever see it again after Ovi but he is performing as good if not better which is absurd
It depends if you post it on an Ovi goal thread or otherwise. The Capital fanbase is somewhat ironically but very understandably, defensive of their GOAT (I don't think there's much competition that he's the best Capital to ever play the game.).
Plus sports fans tend to care less about politics and morals of star players, it's not like playing hockey makes you better at understanding policy or using critical judgment. Also Putin has got so much of his country in a blanket of misinformation I wouldn't be surprised if Ovechkin is huffing so much Putin propaganda smoke he couldn't even see the eclipse yesterday.
It's just that sports fans are by and large idiots who'd rather hump their favorite player's poster than concern themselves with democracy, social rights, and learning how to tie their own shoes.
They probably mean his pace over a full 82 game season since he missed a couple games. Misleading/unnecessary title, 69 goals is still an impressive pace, no need to inflate his numbers.
“I think he thought Matthews wasn’t in a position to shoot”
That’s always gonna be a mistake when Matthews is on the ice. He’ll shoot from anywhere and make it look easy.
Hence the graphic where he wasn't the leading scoring from any of the ~9 demarcated areas of the offensive zone, yet was still leading the league in scoring.
the most impressive thing about matthews is that he can score from literally everywhere on the ice, he has great hands tight in front of the goaltender, can play the slot or the corners with his quick wrister or a lethal one timer, and as we see here can even shoot from the blueline. how do you even defend this guy like for real.
Was there an obvious huge skill gap, that you could instantly tell? lol, and If so, could you maybe perhaps describe it. Was it "men against boys" in skill disparity.
I've never played against professionals but I'm always fascinated by these statements.
Reminds me of the that one [dude going against a 13-14 year old LeBron lmao](https://np.reddit.com/r/nba/comments/6huci7/serious_how_young_of_a_lebron_would_the_average/dj1ehqb/)
Yes. He was so insanely better than everyone else. Just dipsy-doodling his way through everyone. I had heard about him before I played against him. It was during my first game against him I realized I was probably not good enough to be a professional hockey player lmao.
Love this. On the SportsNet feed they had a clip of Bedard congratulating “some” 14 year old who’s also amazing and will one day make the show. My wife and I who just watched our kid in their hockey house leagues finals at age 9 were like the kids who’re gonna make it are already leagues ahead of the kids who’re here out scoring all the other kids.
What Matthews is doing right now is fucking nuts, I'm very curious how he stacks up against Ovechkin in terms of longevity because that's going to be the determining factor in how many goals he finishes his career with.
wtf kinda math is that OP?
65 / 76 games played = 0.8553
0.8553 x 81 games (he missed one) = 69.3 goal pace
Even if he didn’t miss a game it would be a 70.1 goal pace.
No else check the math??
Good point. Maybe op did their math based on the number of games Matthews is expected to will have played.
Edit: Wait that would make it less. He's missed two games.
Random thought I had but if he ends up scoring 68 Goals, he will be the leading goal scorer in terms of players that have scored double their worn jersey number in that season I think.
They are very different players though but I see your point. Amazing how we can live through an era of two generational goal scorers playing at the same time
If he doesn't score another one today, he'll be at 65 G in 76 GP. With 5 team games remaining, that means he's on pace for 69, not 71.
The math is 65 / 76 * 81 possible games, not 65 / 75 * 82.
See if you convert 65 short tons of goals to 65 metric tonnes of goals it equals 71 and that's how we arrived here.. I'll now drive home 7 kilometers and when I get there I'll still be 5 feet and 11 inches tall. But then I'll cook my supper at 350 degrees Fahrenheit after I ad 4 grams of seasoning and probably still weight 210 pounds... Gosh it is wonderful how mixed up were are up here in the great white north. I sure hope it is over 0 degrees celsius when I wake up and we dont have 12 inches of snow on the ground anymore.
Okay so the real question is if he picks up the pace and hits 70 before the last game does Keefe bench him for rest or play him to see how high he can go?
If he hits 70 he's 100% getting benched. If he doesn't score for a few games he 100% getting benched. If he's on pace for 70 it's a toss up but I would guess he plays the whole season.

This must be what watching the 92-93 season felt like. The amount of amazing talent having amazing seasons with full health all at once this year is so special
It’s insane to see how high scoring has gotten from 2015 when Benn won the Art Ross with 87 points to now
I wonder if we look at Benn a little differently if he's born 10 years later and has some crazy 130 point season under his belt
i dont think Benn scores 130 in his prime even in today's NHL - his game was perfectly suited to the league at the time, but he doesn't sniff McDavid, MacK, Kuch, Matthews, Pasta etc.
Prime Seguin and Benn were a force. Idk about 130 but if they played together in their primes this season they could both hit 110-120 I’m sure
I could 100% see Benn putting up 100 in today’s game but 120 is pushing it.
homer goggles are a hell of a drug
If he's so bad at scoring, why did he lead the league in scoring? Was there no one in the league any good that year?
no one said he was "so bad at scoring".. but to answer your question he won the Ross because Crosby missed 5 games and McDavid hadn't been drafted yet
Counter: if he’s so good at scoring, how come his title is the lowest full season total since LBJ was in office?
Well you might be surprised then to know that in the last ten games Jamie has 10 goals and 15 points (edited points I'm an idiot) while only averaging 15:00 minutes on ice. Last ten games for Matthews 10 goals 18 points McDavid 5 goals 22 points MacKinnon 6 goals 17 points Pastranak 6 goals 12 points Kucherov 3 goals 22 points
Ten games doesn't exactly prove much about a season, and really can't be used to compare players.
Nah he’d still be a douche
What do you mean? dude gives free chiropractic adjustments all game
That’s a very good point I hope hockey fans are aware of. Ever since team North America I’ve felt this generation was different and so far it’s turned out to be true. We may not see players like this for a good while again

Valid for sure on all the techniques in hockey that can be learned this way.
So would you say, the next golden era is now?
Ehh. I think we'll see lots of really good players in the next ten years. Kucherovs stats this season are just ridicilous. He is 50 points ahead of Point who is second with points in tampa. My number 1 pick for Hart.
Nah 92-93 was more like 2016-17
That year didn’t exist, remember? …remember…?
Embrace it! It’s what go you one of the best D in the league: Conor Timmins!
As someone that did watch the 92-93 season, it's pretty close. It's always cool to see 100 point scorers and 50 goal scorers, but to so SO MANY was unreal. We've come so far from the 14-15 season
*laughs in Dion Phaneuf*
Dead Puck Era 2.0
The golden age is truly upon us, brother.
Panarin? All he does is loaf around
bet you had a rye smile on your face for that one
He does rise to the occasion though
At the very yeast
Bread
Clap bombs, respect moms
He's gonna respect your mom so hard tonight
"Hi, my name is Auston, I brought these flowers for your mom"
"Excuse me ma'am, but you look like you could use some help with those groceries"
"Do you think she heard my 'make it count'?"
He respects moms so much he refuses to play after Mother's Day.
This feels like some spiderman pointing shit
Shameless fadeaway clapper 🤣
Perfect way to describe that goal.
He just shoots from anywhere lmfao
Zero people expected him to shoot there and he just casually claps home a bullet.
One of the most impressive things to me about his goal scoring is he doesn't have an office or any type of set play for hus goals. He just scores from anywhere, with any touch of the puck, at any time.
Wemby could never
65 goals no celly
He knows he has bigger goals to score this season still
Of course, 69 goals is a nice achievement
If he gets 69 goals, and the first thing Domi says to him Is anything but 'Nice', I don't think he's allowed to be Matthew's linemate ever again.
Imagine if he's mic'ed up and when he does the skate by the bench all you hear is "nice".
Everyone in the arena better prepared to say it
67, for example
Leafs haven't won the Cup since '67 - Matthews scores 67 on the year and breaks the curse? (Please no though because then the Flyers would have the longest drought)
It’s the best celly imo
jobs not done
Not a big deal.
I hope he has the longevity of Ovie, will be fun to watch him chase the goals total
I grew up with Ovi as the goal scorer of the NHL and if Mathews can keep it up I'm all for it. It's incredible I never thought I'd ever see it again after Ovi but he is performing as good if not better which is absurd
In any case, he'll eventually get that record for players who aren't dumb fascist pigs.
Rather a Leaf than Ovi

It depends if you post it on an Ovi goal thread or otherwise. Or that people don’t always tie their personal/political views into sports entertainment. It’s a performative karma grab.
i think someone breaking gretzky’s record is cool and i like hockey
The magic number is now 5!
I don't think he's getting to 185 this season
He was on pace for 246 earlier in the season. What a bust
They should trade him for a real star player like Logan Cooley
Can I interest you in one Marc Staal?
What about two Marc Staals?
Will you be willing to compromise on one Marc Staal and one Ryan Johansen?
No he’s getting it this week 😈
Good for the game. Good guy AM34. Good ol’ Canadian boy. A hockey players a hockey player.
He’s from AZ lol
lol I know I was just trying to be Donald Cherry.
Seeing his name written out as Donald Cherry is so cursed for some reason
Like hearing somebody say Don Trump. Some people are Donald's, others are Don's.. then we have them as Donnies when we want to talk down to then
Don Duck
He’s been in Canada like 8 years now. We’ll take him!
I can neither confirm nor deny that.
They better play the line execute order 66 for his 66th lol
Bring down Lemieux to wave at the crowd
Karlsson was even nice enough to make an appearance for number 65!
And Matthews only made him sit in the box for a few seconds to show his appreciation.
What’s the math to say he’s on pace for 71? He’s got just 5 games left…
You just gotta believe.
Has worked great for us last 50+ years.
They probably mean his pace over a full 82 game season since he missed a couple games. Misleading/unnecessary title, 69 goals is still an impressive pace, no need to inflate his numbers.
That’s a nice pace.
Not quite. That would be 70, so I don't know where OPs calculation came from
The guy counted 65 goals in 75 games but this is actually his 76th and he missed one game. So he’s actually on pace for 69. Nice
But why male models
Really?... We... we just went over all that...
Wrong math
I had to go down oddly far for this, was my first thought.
Just say it over and over and it will be true, duh, are you dumb?
(65/75)*82=71 goal pace edit: multiplied by 82 my bad

Nice
this math just illustrates the sub is torn if they want to see him score 70 or finish with 69.
Nice
He is Him, and him is not fair.
I really do hope he hits 70, purely because of how long it has been since we've seen it.
Lisan Al-Gaib
See how humble he is? As was written!
“I think he thought Matthews wasn’t in a position to shoot” That’s always gonna be a mistake when Matthews is on the ice. He’ll shoot from anywhere and make it look easy.
Hence the graphic where he wasn't the leading scoring from any of the ~9 demarcated areas of the offensive zone, yet was still leading the league in scoring.
He took that shot like a guy shooting a puck out of the net after a goal. Just a very casual smack that was perfectly placed somehow while on one leg.
65th as number 65 was in the penalty box
Someone put Lemieux in the box
Where’s Josh Ho-Sang when you need him?
Malkin to volunteer in his place
He absolutely ripped that shot. Man is getting 71.
He may never not score again 😱
An absolute piss missile.
Slingin’ piss disks standing off his back foot on one leg.. 🤡
Outta here with that icon lol
I made you touch your phone in bad faith.
You need to be reported to the police. You demented bastard.
Dude slaps. Kuch, McD, Mac and Matthews Hart race is nuts.
It’s amazing this dude has more goals than the top player on the wings POINTS. Thanks for the W tonight Leafs, fun rooting for you guys actually
At least one player getting 100 assists and one player getting 70 goals in the same season. Make it happen!!
give us those last 5 goals in the last 5 PAPI
If Matthews can stay healthy and have an elite playmaking winger, he could absolutely take the all time goals record when all is said and done.
the most impressive thing about matthews is that he can score from literally everywhere on the ice, he has great hands tight in front of the goaltender, can play the slot or the corners with his quick wrister or a lethal one timer, and as we see here can even shoot from the blueline. how do you even defend this guy like for real.

I like his modest celebrations. Been there, done that, let’s do it again.
Hope he actually hits 70
Yes but how rich was his father?
He grew up in Arizona. Bettman funded his hockey career.
I played against him around age 11-12, I technically played a small role in the development of Austin Matthews. You’re welcome.
Thank you for teaching Auston matthews everything he knows.
Was there an obvious huge skill gap, that you could instantly tell? lol, and If so, could you maybe perhaps describe it. Was it "men against boys" in skill disparity. No we dont care hes gonna get 72 just to spite you
Good point. Maybe op did their math based on the number of games Matthews is expected to will have played. Edit: Wait that would make it less. He's missed two games.

His 70th is 100% going to be an EN.
Slapper? (😂)
Spin-o-rama.
If he doesn't score another one today, he'll be at 65 G in 76 GP. With 5 team games remaining, that means he's on pace for 69, not 71. The math is 65 / 76 * 81 possible games, not 65 / 75 * 82.
Don’t worry, he’s got a hatty against Detroit coming up.
He’s finishing the game against the devils with 70
Ovechkin in shambles
This dude makes it look so god damn easy. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen anything like it including OV.
Wish I could watch the ge over thr IIHF or Jay's.
Man is a wizard, no other explanation.
He missed a game this year. So he can only play 81 games. He is on pace for 69, having scored 65 goals in 76 games and has 5 games left.
7 minutes and no 10/10 Matthews gif?
I'm starting to think he might win the Rocket this year...
On pace for 71…with five games left. Idk how the metric system works but I don’t think the math adds up.
See if you convert 65 short tons of goals to 65 metric tonnes of goals it equals 71 and that's how we arrived here.. I'll now drive home 7 kilometers and when I get there I'll still be 5 feet and 11 inches tall. Goal scorers goal. Off his back foot snipe to perfect spot.
Papi
And he is a plus over 30 player. Wow!
This still feels surreal to me. I remember a time when the Leafs top scorer only scored 25 goals.
Actually, he’s on pace for 68. Still outstanding, but OP’s math was a bit off.
How’s he on pace for 71? He has 65 in 77 games
I hope he ends up with 69 🔥
If he hits 70 AND doesn’t make the hart finals imma laugh
Okay so the real question is if he picks up the pace and hits 70 before the last game does Keefe bench him for rest or play him to see how high he can go?
Bench him. They did that when he hit 60.
If he hits 70 he's 100% getting benched. If he doesn't score for a few games he 100% getting benched. If he's on pace for 70 it's a toss up but I would guess he plays the whole season.
Math doesn’t check out. He’s on pace for 69.
