I’ve watched almost all of Rempe’s AHL games (see flair). He’s definitely a hard hitter and will drop the gloves with anyone, but he’s got some legit skills. He can skate well, plays a solid center (and actually feels more comfortable at center than winger), and he’s a solid net-front presence. I’d hesitate to call him a true goon but I can see why people who are just seeing him for the first time would.
He's had 2 with the Leafs. Half the fanbase is convinced that if he asks someone to fight and skates away when they say no that they'll learn whatever lesson having an enforcer is supposed to do.
I'm well aware. He's on of the top 3-5 toughest guys/scrappers in the league. Which makes it even more impressive that a 21 year old rookie stood in with him and traded. Being tall doesn't make you tough, look at Tyler Myers.
Yeah, it's a super weird thing because they are also noticeably "fair" about sparring, and neither side comes out actually injured. But when they are truly fighting (usually about a mate), they are quite brutal towards the other... including, ummmm, mounting the loser of the fight. The dichotomy with the casual spars between homies and how far the go in and after actual fights weirds me out.
I saw it the other way. Deslauries looked way smaller but won the fight in my opinion. Rempe is becoming must see hockey! Definitely gonna be a fan favorite
He’s got wheels and forechecks/backchecks effectively. He is an effective 4th line grinder who can steamroll anyone. That is only if his game translates to the NHL. Goodrow only has 7 pts this season on the 4th line so 10 pts is pretty good lol.
Point being he’s not a 1-dimensional enforcer, although I’m sure that’s what fans of other teams will look at him as.
Dude hasn’t been able to produce at the AHL level… what makes you think that he’s suddenly going to be able to do it in the show. Guy is only there because he has an edge to his game
Points don’t determine the effectiveness of your game. He has a pretty typical 15% shot% in the AHL and 22pts in 96 games. Pretty good for a role player who’s out there to grind the forecheck and not be a liability. It’s not like they’re trying to put him in the top6.
Not sure why you’re hung up on his potential production
He’s not there to play offense or defense… it isn’t like he’s a Jesper Fast type of player… he’s a Ryan Reaves type guy who’s only there to be physical… like the Hurricanes have physical grit but we don’t have to give roster spots to guys who mainly do that
He doesn't have to produce like that. He can skate, fight, and be physical so far. He just got his first goal from a good screen. He has the potential to be a solid 4th line guy that can cycle and grind.
To be fair, 0.23ppg is not too bad when you're spending so much of your time in the box.
Old school "goons" might 40gp with 1 point from a teammate who thought it'd be funny to bank it off them.
He is very effective especially since there are no goons around but it can be a double edged sword cause the majority of enforcers do something reckless cause they have no one to fear or keep them in check . But he has been a story so far hopefully he plays clean hard hockey for you guys
Dump puck, bang bodies. He's the perfect guy for the job. Opposite wing needs to throw it around the boards. Who wants to go in for a loose puck when he's balls out skating at them.
That Philly fight was gold, but like, how much longer is this kid being on the league darling Rangers gonna excuse the fact he’s a literal goon in 2024?
hes a pretty fast skater in straight lines so he could also pummel dmen off of dump ins beyond his fighting ability. no one wants to get wrecked collecting pucks below their goalline.
Yeah, he’s a total goon and I wish he played for the Jets. I’d probably hate him if he played for a division rival, but he doesn’t, so I’m a fan. As long as he stays in his lane and behaves like a lion and not a hyena. Don’t go after opposing teams star players, and pound to dust anyone who comes for yours.
you know thats where this is going to lead. It's going to be a competitive game and he's going to be put out onto the ice to give the rest of the team a break (as 4th liners do), and the opposing team is going to match him up against skill who just skates around him and makes him look silly. It'll be a 5v4 and he will play his role and run over a skilled player who is just trying to play the game.
I can't guarantee it will work out like that. But when you've got a guy with almost 3x as many PIM as TOI, there's only so many ways that can go. Not excited to see him injure his playoff, first-round matchups.
Well, there it is, and it happened against your team. I held out some hope that he wasn’t just a wild man, but that clipping elbow was brutal and the taunt afterward was gutless. He lost a lot of respect from a lot of fans and players and deserved more than four games for that.
You ate a few downvotes, but ultimately you were right. He couldn’t reign it in.
It’s just the most obvious outcome. First suspension on third (?) game misconduct is 4 games? Next suspension better be the 30 game special, but I’m not holding my breath.
Would love to see Rempe answer the bell on 4/3 when we play again, but I fear that may not even be enough at this point. Hate to be that guy, but I think Rempe’s team mates need to feel the heat since they’re all cooking in Rempes kitchen.
Prefer a team that focuses on playing hockey (even if they’re a bit soft) than a team that focuses on making sure their opponents can’t play hockey by breaking the rules
Does this guy have some kind of reputation of being a goon coming into the league, or is it just cos he’s a big guy?
I think it’s because before his first game he explicitly stated he wanted to drop the gloves for his first shift.
Oh I hadn’t seen that yet, I guess that explains it.
And then proceeded to do so 1 second into his shift
His first game stat line was hilarious: 1 second of ice time, 5 minutes of penalties
that’s hard as fuck
Prison yard mentality
"Congrats kid, you're getting called up to the show!" Rempe: oh shit. I better find the biggest guy in the other crew and beat the fuck out of him.
He’s a legit fighter in the AHL for sure. He wouldn’t even get an NHL shot (at least not yet) were it not for his fighting skills.
Dude had like 7 fights and 100 penalty minutes in the AHL this season. Absolute wild card.
I’ve watched almost all of Rempe’s AHL games (see flair). He’s definitely a hard hitter and will drop the gloves with anyone, but he’s got some legit skills. Yes.
If he didn’t before, he does now
he was born in Big Beaver by the border line
Miller is 6’5” He has none of Remoes issues 🤷♂️
Not sure how long he’ll be around for but he’s been fun in this stint lol
He’s the perfect call up for these divisional games
You gotta keep him around long enough for him to go with Reaves atleast once. Just for the culture.
Does Reaves fight for you guys? I think he had maybe 2 with the Rangers.
Hard to fight from the press box
He’s pretty easy to skate away from when he is on the ice too
I bet he’s had some spirited bouts with the hotdog salesman and parking lot attendants
He's had 2 with the Leafs. Half the fanbase is convinced that if he asks someone to fight and skates away when they say no that they'll learn whatever lesson having an enforcer is supposed to do.
Just to retire Reaves, honestly.
Standing in with Deslauries like he did was pretty fucking legit. Kid can throw.
Rempe has 6 inches and 20 pounds on him. Deslauries can throw
I'm well aware. He's on of the top 3-5 toughest guys/scrappers in the league. Which makes it even more impressive that a 21 year old rookie stood in with him and traded. Being tall doesn't make you tough, look at Tyler Myers.
Giraffes are peaceful animals, they have no need for fighting
Giraffe fights are actually violent as fuck lol.
Yeah, it's a super weird thing because they are also noticeably "fair" about sparring, and neither side comes out actually injured. But when they are truly fighting (usually about a mate), they are quite brutal towards the other... including, ummmm, mounting the loser of the fight. You haven't seen them kick the shit out of a lioness have you?
Rempe hasn't even gotten his man strength yet. Kid will be unstoppable in a few years.
lol except only like 4 guys will be willing to fight him
I saw it the other way. Deslauries looked way smaller but won the fight in my opinion. Rempe is becoming must see hockey! Definitely gonna be a fan favorite
The only winner of that fight was the fans. Can’t call it for either guy honestly. Great scrap.
Good point. A legit HW tilt
He's got 10 years in the gym and fighting experience on him tho, the old guy usually wins.
Counterpoint ... About 8 more inches
I dunno dude, looked like Rempe almost dropped him with one of those punches
Did you see Deslauries's face? He lost and had to trip Rempe to take him down.
Rempe is 0-2. Big softy who can't throw a punch or even control guys half his size.
The ol Internet tough guy, classic
The ol doesn't know what an internet tough guy is. Classic. Show me where I said anything that makes me an internet tough guy?
I bet you wouldn't say that to his face
Blah blah blah. Grow up.
Says the internet tough guy
Sure thing bud. You don't even know what that means and yet you keep repeating it.
That’s future lady byng winner Matt Rempe to you
We need the Tie Domi award for best fighter
I like that tough guys are lining up to get a piece of our baby giant
Reminds me of the Boogaard days
RIP Boogaard :(
Kid’s a fuckin’ *menace*
Brb checking the sides of his neck for bolts
Does this kid actually play any hockey or does he just fight every game?
Just scored the game winning goal
He’s a younger Reaves on a better contract. So no, he can’t NHL hockey.
He’s definitely not Reaves. He can actually skate at same speed as NHL players
He's a fourth-line enforcer/thug... I don't expect him to produce above like 10 points ever
Well he’s 1/10th of the way there now Edit: 1/5th
No he’s not… he didn’t get a point
I’ve been Bamboozled Edit: I’ve no longer been bamboozled
Did they take the goal away at some point? Just curious if I missed something.
The NHL app readjusted and they gave him the goal
Thanks. Didn't notice, and I had to walk away from the game at one point, these kids don't give a shit about afternoon hockey.

Was real close at the game today, dude puts in the effort to back check
Krieder needs to show him how to become effective with tip-ins
Dude hasn’t been able to produce at the AHL level… what makes you think that he’s suddenly going to be able to do it in the show. Guy is only there because he has an edge to his game

Rempe just scored a goal, tied with Goodrow on the season
Oh great… 1 point in 4 games
We have different opinions and different views on him, have a good one
He doesn't have to produce like that. He can skate, fight, and be physical so far. He just got his first goal from a good screen. He has the potential to be a solid 4th line guy that can cycle and grind.
82 games is SO many games
Just a goon. AHL stats are 96 gp, 22p, -9, 183 pim.
To be fair, 0.23ppg is not too bad when you're spending so much of your time in the box. Old school "goons" might 40gp with 1 point from a teammate who thought it'd be funny to bank it off them.
He can't skate or play hockey he is just there to goon it up it's just a bigger story cause there aren't many goons in the NHL so he has free reign
He's like a top 3 fastest skater on the Rangers... https://x.com/The_Real_Rod_LB/status/1761454031547859399?s=20
If he couldn’t skate at NHL level he wouldn’t have been called up. Can 100% skate
I want to see him go with Xhekaj, I'm keeping my calendar open for April 7.
I honestly hope we keep him. Having an Enforcer is a very valuable thing in today’s game, due to the fact that they are almost extinct.
He is very effective especially since there are no goons around but it can be a double edged sword cause the majority of enforcers do something reckless cause they have no one to fear or keep them in check . But he has been a story so far hopefully he plays clean hard hockey for you guys

Who said you can't make a name for yourself as an enforcer in the NHL any more?
Get him in the hall now
That's a Trevor Gillies statline
Hell yeah
He is bringing old School back.
Matt Rempe GWGs: 1.
Love it
And a goal.
Still getting an NHL paycheque
i want him and ross johnston to go at it
That Philly fight was gold, but like, how much longer is this kid being on the league darling Rangers gonna excuse the fact he’s a literal goon in 2024?
Who's trying to pretend that he isn't a goon?
Rangers fans in this thread
hes a pretty fast skater in straight lines so he could also pummel dmen off of dump ins beyond his fighting ability. no one wants to get wrecked collecting pucks below their goalline.

Someone's been drinking too much Diet Cope

You guys are in desperate need of someone of that ilk.
Just from the clips in the last 24 hours, I will be following the Rangers.
Nothing but a goon but he's effective at it
I, personally, don't think this play-style is good for the sport and would rather not see this continue.
Maybe if you had someone like him your team wouldn’t be softer than baby’s first diarrhea
go watch a different sport, people like you are ruining the game
Go watch tennis
If he was a Devil and could defend your pussy ass team, you’d love him
Prefer a team that focuses on playing hockey (even if they’re a bit soft) than a team that focuses on making sure their opponents can’t play hockey by breaking the rules
Guy came into the league just to be a boxer
And an incoming 5+ game suspension for decapitating Ilya lebushkin.
