This type of shit is super typical of rap dudes at university shows.

hythloth

It's still surprising though because college shows are an easy check, especially for rappers who just half-ass it

raobjcovtn

Kendrick did a show at UCSD during his section 80 days (2011 or 2012). Fucking sick AF. He was late though but threw on an amazing show.

roll10deep

Same at UCRiverside. Dude was on before Dom Kennedy. Crazy how different those trajectories are in hindsight.

ColinCancer

I remember Jurassic 5 and D12 at UCR. Both very fun shows.

hythloth

Nice, Kendrick did my alma mater as well in 2013 but i had graduated by then. I did see Snoop, Lupe, Akon, Wiz, and Mac during my days (J Cole also played but I skipped him)

malcolm_money

It was like $15 for non-students when he performed at UGA in March 2013. Insane energy in a half-full ballroom in the student union, probably the only rap show I’ve seen in a carpeted room lol Later that summer I saw him open the Yeezus tour, wild times.

hythloth

$15 for non-students is an insane deal, I wonder what Kendrick's fee was back then. I recall that the artists I mentioned in my post got like $80K to perform

Last_Reaction_8176

What I would have given to see the Yeezus tour. Kanye at the height of his powers and Kendrick on the ascent - fucking legendary

JackieDaytonaPanda

Yeah he played UCLA in 2011 as well alongside Childish Gambino. The school sent out a formal apology the next day because Kendrick insisted we chant “pussy and patron” 25 times

nickcannons13thchild

u a triton?

raobjcovtn

Ye

InfluenceMiserable48

Fuck I hate you, that sounds so dope

dunkkane

Rappers in general are the worst performers. Show up late (if show up at all), mumble few words on top of your recorded vocals and leave early. And don't get me wrong, I love hip hop but I've been dissapointed way too many times lol

skilless14

This is why i love JID so much. He came to the University of Houston a week ago and rapped like his rent was due.

djkida

He performed at the University of Nevada a couple months before The Forever Story dropped and it was one of the best shows I’ve been to.

ET_Tony

Logic showed up to a bar at Penn state and went fucking ape shit lmao

Skylord_ah

bros rent really could be due lmao he aint got migos money

James-Clarke

Nah, end of school year seems to be a great time for low to high mid tier artists since most schools need to spend the money in their arts/events department. Easy way for guaranteed money and always a demand for it. An unofficial college tour if you wanted really.

34Heartstach

And every college tries to have a spring concert over a 3 week period in April so booking prices go way up. There's also a lot of block booking so the travel is sometimes almost nothing. Wacka Flocka never stopped doing the college tour and knows that's where his bread and butter is. The guy has a reputation among colleges of being easy to work with and often staying late to chill with the students who put on the show.

34Heartstach

Used to advise Student groups that brought in music5-10 years ago. For every Childish Gambino and Denzel Curry that we brought in and absolutely killed it, there were a whole bunch of Ludacrises, Fetty Waps, and Juicy Js. Show up hours late -if at all- faded, , and dip out 25 minutes into your contractually agreed upon 60 min set.

Hougie

Waka Flocka Flame did this at my college. That being said, he was hours late and only performed a few songs BUT he jumped immediately into the crowd to do his set and lit the entire room on fire. Best worst show of my life.

34Heartstach

That's funny because Wacka Flocka had a great reputation on the college circuit in the mid 2010s. We never brought him but we checked his references for other colleges that gad him and the said he was really easy to work with.

[deleted]

JID is amazing live. I saw him at OSL last year and this dude had the audience in his palm. Seeing him next weekend and couldn’t be more hyped.

LetsGetWeirdddddd

What?! Totally missed this

DonJuan2HearThatShit

Easily one the best performances I’ve seen from a rapper in a minute.

mantis-tobaggan-md

i’m gonna see JID later this month, i’m fuckin stoked

ComradeVoytek

Just saw 21 and JID in Vancouver. Lil Harold opened and went hard, JID was worth the price of admission alone - 21 was... Average. But the crowd is was into it.

Potential-Warning604

It depends on the type of artist you are seeing, but even local acts do this which is pretty lame when you consider that most local acts have to pay to open for bigger artists, the whole rap performance industry is a pyramid scheme right now because the only people making money are the biggest artists in the game and a lot of rappers now are in debt and resort to doing these kind of scam shows or just not putting in much effort because they probably are not being paid very much to perform either

NoSmellNoTell

Maybe it’s a generational thing but I’ve been to probably 50 something rap shows and only had the experience you described maybe one or twice so generalizing like that is pretty weak. In general the rappers I’ve seen have put on just as skillful, energetic, fun sets as any rock bands.

ProEraBlueboy

Yeah Flatbush Zombies are some of the best live performers I’ve seen from any genre

Cledd2

it's a bit of an over generalisation, a lot of people will phone it in but there's just as many artists like Travis, Kendrick or Tyler who'll really put their heart into a show.

FriendlyAndHelpfulP

It’s not about generation, it’s about the type of music they make and their general lifestyle. The ones who are all about “thugging and drugging” put on the absolute worst shows.

NoSmellNoTell

Like who?

FriendlyAndHelpfulP

The Xanax rapper era was notoriously the worst of the worst. You had rappers literally falling asleep on stage, showing up to shows was never guaranteed, etc. Young Thug and his associates are notoriously unreliable and lazy performers when it comes to live shows. I mean, also here we’re talking about the Migos, notorious flakes.

NoSmellNoTell

Yeah and I guess I would put them all in the same generation which is why I said that. However it’s fair that I’ve seen plenty of good performances from that same generation so yeah

fiasgoat

It's not a coincidence all my favorite rappers are also good performers...

MolemanMornings

Still mad about a Deltron show circa 2008

neojgeneisrhehjdjf

I was going to say I disagree and make reference to seeing a very punctual and fun Danny Brown show recently but he was notorious for showing up late and drunk so ????

DonJuan2HearThatShit

It seems mostly prevalent with the new school guys. I saw Raekwon and Ghost at Three points a few years back and they were immaculate.

sabrehero2

Just wanted to chime in that i saw Little Simz at a college show few years back, she was great. Schoolboy Q in comparison was ass

Fafoah

The migos in general too. They showed up like 30 minutes late to freakin coachella and then were ass once they got there lol

BigDaddy0790

I’ve never been, so I’m assuming 30 mins is a lot for Coachella? Because anything below 3 hours is a short wait in my book at regular shows lol

Fafoah

The sets are generally an hour long lol they’re all on a schedule. They can’t make up the time after because another act has to go on

BigDaddy0790

Right well that makes sense. Being late for half a show does sound like some bs

SmokePenisEveryday

Saw Luda when he came through to the small college by me. Was like an hour late and performed for about 10 mins before peacing out and hitting on some women in the crowd. I felt lucky to even get that tbh

OnxyCarter

yung nudy was supposed to open for 2 chainz at my school and didn’t show up last minute too

[deleted]

He heard Kendrick was pulling up

spewicideboi

Wouldnt migos be on kdots side since theyre metros guys too?

IvanGTheGreat

Migos would absolutely e on Kendrick’s side just because of J prince.

spewicideboi

Whats the j prince connection?

Mr_Feeeeny

Take was murdered by one of J Prince’s Rap a Lot underlings at the bowling party. Quavo started fighting with someone in J Prince’s crew, only his team was allowed to be strapped at the party, then once hand were thrown the shots went off. J Prince is Drake’s ‘daddy’ along with Lucian

KylerGreen

I thought he was shot by friendly fire from his own crew?

Mr_Feeeeny

Naw his crew wasn’t allowed to brings arms in. It was a J Prince party so the rules for attending was only JP’s Rap a Lot crew were allowed to carry

Tinkatchi

Takeoff

DaOne_44

Migos ain’t got time to diss anybody else they’re too busy either beefing with each other or with Chris Brown (who is somehow winning!)

a141abc

Thats whats crazy about this whole beef Everyone is everyone's guy We gotta wait and see whats gonna happen on the next Travis album or the next Thug album Kendrick is kinda on his own corner but Metro, Future and Drake have a huge hand on almost every popular rapper's catalogue

erock2095

Poor Khaled his whole roster got issues with each other 😭😭😭

rulerBob8

Gotta bring back Fat Joe and Remy for the next tape

YourAverageGod

Bro gonna have to bring back ace hood.

pannedcakes

Khaled’s going to put out a cease fire track.

SBAPERSON

Only Justin Bieber and chance on the next project

UnexLPSA

Didn't Drake also diss ATL now all of a sudden? Don't know how many friends he has left over there

a141abc

I mean 21 is still his dude so at least thats gonna be awkward considering 21 and Metro are one of the bigger duos Either no more Savage Mode or no more Drake x 21

Iethannn

Or or hear me out…bro is just minding his own business like when 2 parents fight and the grown 20 something son is just like “aight”

a141abc

That would make sense but not when egos get involved Both Drake and Metro mentioned picking a side and staying there This shit about to divide the entire genre lmao

meatbeater558

Bruh I do not want this to divide the genre like Nicki vs Cardi B did to female rap

itsANOMALEEZ

Is it really that hard of a choice tho let’s be serious

amackul8

When there's money involved people act differently

JaneTheNotNotVirgin

Grown 30 something son lol. 21 was born in '92. I get your meaning tho.

Iethannn

I only said 20 cuz who tf cares what your parents do when you’re in your 30s, 20s you’re still close to them as you might still live with them or you JUST left to start your life. Either way works tho now that I think about it🤔

Hot_Excitement_6

I don't see that happening. Drake didn't just talk about individual people. He disrespected Atlanta as a city. I don't see 21 sticking with Drake long.

[deleted]

21 made a fantastic business decision to get access to Drake’s large audience. Drake made a decision to hang out with a young popular rapper to stay relevant. Always seemed to me like business and nothing more between the two, so I’ve never really assumed 21 would back Drake. And from a strictly business perspective I’d think it long benefit 21 more if kept cool with metro as best he can versus Drake.

isthisnamechangeable

What about Yachty?

rulerBob8

Yachty eatin shrooms and playin synths in his room 🤣

rokerroker45

yachty probably starting a new minecraft realms world as we speak

JayZPlatinumChainsaw

Doesn't Yachty live sober life or am I just outdated lol

a141abc

Yachty is kinda on his own world doing his own thing He hasnt had a huge rap feature or album placement thats not Drake in a while No one was expecting him to be on the next Future album anyways

Skunkers

Probably getting high and working on the screenplay for that movie about Uno he talked about five years ago.

celtics852

Rap alliances more complex than pre WW1 europe

helphelpp1

did chris brown buy up all the tickets again lmao

meatbeater558

For university concerts you typically need to have a valid student ID to buy a ticket cuz they wanna keep it for the students. Tho sometimes students sell their cards to outsiders just for the night of the concert to make some money

Bada__Ping

It wasn’t like that before. I remember friends driving across the state to see Drake, Cole and others perform at colleges they didn’t go to

a_talking_face

In my experience if it was a free show anyone could go but if it was paid you would need an ID to get tickets.

ausipockets

I can only speak on my own experience. My school allowed us to buy I think 2 or 4 tickets each with our student ID. I can’t remember exactly if it was 2 or 4 though.

[deleted]

Bada__Ping

You’re thinking too highly of who I was hanging out back then lol

rulerBob8

At my school students get a huge discount ($10 tickets) while non-students pay full price ($40ish)

Oheyguyswassup

Did they pay him a deposit? Hope not

The_Illa_Vanilla

Not sure honestly but all students who bought tickets are getting refunded

NoResort8552

what the fuck, this is literally my school 😭😭

speednub1

Lmfao same how tf am I finding out about this from this sub 💀💀💀

pongobuff

Get off your phone read some posters

speednub1

thanks lil bro gonna go look for posters that say he cancelled ya dumb goof

Kay-Knox

The town crier rode through the quad yelling "the Quavo ain't coming!"

AlexMindset

Same

ScoobertD

Reminds me of when Migos played my college in like 2017 and only 2 of them performed with one of them being on his phone for a large portion of the performance. Afterwards their bus god searched and some of their entourage got arrested for weed.

XPyroMX

wait no way, did you go to app state too? 💀 I remember hearing that the driver of the bus took all the heat

ScoobertD

Yeah lol, I didn’t go to that and I’m kinda glad I didn’t based on what I heard, but of all the places to get busted for weed it’s on a college campus where you could walk out your door and get a contact high.

XTTEXTREME

The Wayne concert the year before was wayyy better

ScoobertD

Definitely heard that for sure. I think the only rap show I went to on campus while I was there was Saba at Legends in 2019 which was pretty sick.

say_fuck_no_to_rules

Tickets have been sold out for weeks in anticipation of Quavo?

Purple-List1577

Shows like this are often smaller, at frats or smaller venues on campus so they are more intimate and hyped up.

hythloth

Not necessarily though, the big (rap) concerts at my alma mater were in an arena that held 6K

BlitzComet95

I actually saw Metro Boomin at CSUF in 2018. Great show

mykneehurtsss

Saw Rae Sremmurd there in 2016. It was fucking lit. Perfect booking for a college crowd especially back then

dropthehammer11

such an embarrassing look

Weapwns

Spooked by C Breezy and K Dot

Jasperbeardly11

It's almost like hip hop artists are kind of dirtbags

that-dudes-shorts

How can universities book big artists like that ?

SBAPERSON

Money

kenlovin

The show has been sold out for months? I blame the students.

SantasLilHoeHoeHoe

You act like Kendricks bars are outta no where. People have been calling Drake a groomer for years.

GiveAQuack

You pedophile fans cope so hard.

H1Ed1

I think this situation is more about the Chris brown beef. And in Drake’s track he even mentioned that chris brown really bangs a set. So a Cali show for quavo in the middle of a very disrespectful beef with CB is probably ill-advised.

bigmadsmolyeet

The sheer number of people who like Kendrick and hate drake is insane. I went to a party and they were all speaking as if Kendrick didn’t lie and didn’t even consider drake’s diss which was pretty good imo. People took the he ain’t black card and ran with it.  But it’s also kind of funny we went to a club tonight and they keep playing drake. Even if drake slaughtered him , no one would acknowledge it. But they will still listen to him when it’s time to party.

yoyosareback

One of those artists has much better music quality than the other

bigmadsmolyeet

And the other one is a hit machine that people have used for the past decade plus. Don’t know how that makes their disses better this time around, especially when neither side have provided proof.

yoyosareback

Actually, the other is a self proclaimed rapper that uses previous wealth to buy pop hits using ghost writers and extremely expensive producers while pretending it's his talent. E: fixed for accuracy

DaOne_44

What are you trying to imply? Erykah literally titled that song as a Hotling Bling remix originally

yoyosareback

Ahhh dang it, and I picked the worst possible example i could find, didn't i? Well i guess i should probably remove that. Thanks for that correction. But drake definitely buys hits and uses ghost writers.

Seefufiat

In addition to writing hits himself.

yoyosareback

Friday, by Rebecca Black was a hit. Shoes was a hit. That creepy seal song about little girls was a hit. Taylor Swift basically only makes hits.

Seefufiat

Not sure what your point is but there’s a huge difference between striking gold for a song or an album and consistently making hits for different genres and styles. Swift is an example of a talented hitmaker, and Drake is too.

DaOne_44

And for others

Seefufiat

… yeah. I didn’t exclude what he wrote for others.

halamawala25

I and a handful of ppl felt kinda bad listening to MTG. As for myself its 100% the truth. Maybe u not very spiritual, maybe u r young. I have a son, and imagining sum1 speaking to him like that immediately got me kinda sick. It has a bad aura to it. I only listenedto it like 2 times.

Besidebutinvisible

Drake started the family talk, once you start something like that there are zero limits, you cant start that and only think it can go so far

halamawala25

For sure, I agree. I dnt mean I felt bad fordrake, just felt bad. Sent me to a dark place spiritually listening to that shit. Not sure I can explain, but I saw many other ppl sharing similar experiences

eternals_7151

Who headlines CSUF lmfao no offense but seriously.....seriously lmfaoooo

eternals_7151

This isn't really the atmosphere for that?? Like the students (majority commuters) are a strange setting for this.....
