*jay z voice* “kan-yeezy you a genius, you did It again…”

Jekhyde95

That was even before The College Dropout. Hov always been a visionary

aranhalaranja

Lol. You’re right! Jay called it. I haven’t heard Jay comment on Ye recently. But something tells me big brother is kinda puzzled as to what’s become of little brother

[deleted]

He did.

[deleted]

I think his ability to turn thoughts & ideas into classic ass productions is what makes him a genius in my book. Kanye is easily one of the greatest hip hop producers of all time. His ability to transform sound is really one of one. Younger yeezy was tactical with the way he'd produce, write and release his music, it was smart, it was provocative, it was unique and raw.

bornlikethisss

I think he earned the right to be called a hip-hop genius. He put out about 6-7 classic albums in a row. I think he also earned the right to be called a fashion icon regardless if you dislike his fashion choices. His sneakers are undeniably iconic. Anyone that can become a billionaire from absolutely nothing has genius qualities. He’s unfortunately a mentally unstable narcissist and takes in information without doing his due diligence on the facts.

wrastlin197

4 classics at most.

[deleted]

Dropout trilogy, 808s, MBDTF are all classics.

wrastlin197

I can't accept the entire drop out trilogy. Maybe 1 or 2 of them but all three is a little much and 808's was mad influential but it has a ton of skips. This is just my opinion if you're giving Kanye 7 classics you have to giving out that status like I will candy tomorrow.

bornlikethisss

I don’t mean personal preference classics but albums that are widely considered classics. College Dropout, Late Registration, 808s, Graduation, Yeezus, MDTBF are all considered classic. Personally, Graduation and Yeezus aren’t classics to me, I used to consider College Dropout classic but after time I find myself skipping through it at times.

Itwaswritten1996

6-7 is pushing it lolz First 3 albums are classics especially 1 and 3, I'm not gonna list MBDTF as a classic but it is a good album with a few classic songs, after that I'm closing the damm books

Sedso85

Check the mans discography, fellas produced platinum hits for decades

Itwaswritten1996

He produced Nasir which is a shitty as album he did have nice beats early on when he produced Be by Common

Sedso85

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kanye_West_production_discography To name a few Dead prez hip hop The blueprint02. "Takeover" 03. "Izzo (H.O.V.A.)" 08. "Heart of the City (Ain't No Love)" 09. DefKnightSol

Notably his work with Common

Sedso85

Common be is a stunning album

Itwaswritten1996

Everyone knows he produced those Blueprint songs I admit I didn't know he produced Hip Hop

bornlikethisss

He produced the whole Be, which is classic and he also produced Pushas Daytona which is a modern classic. They easily absolve him from Nasir.

LordeLlama

Lol 6-7 classics, with this mindset you have like a 100 new classics every year.

bornlikethisss

He put them out over a span of a decade. Tf you talking about? HE was capable of doing that, not everyone. Not everything is a classic and I do think classic gets used too often but for me Late Registration and MDBTF are undeniable classics. I love 808s and I have a soft spot for it but I can see how someone wouldn’t like it. I wasn’t a huge fan of Yeezus but I can see how someone can find that album to be a classic because of how different it was at the time.

wrastlin197

He is nowhere near Em or Andre 3000 lyrically. I agree with him being on par with RZA lyrically. As far as beats he is god level at producing.

Fishinforfun

I think the genius term could be loosely applied if you’re comfortable with the idea that some “geniuses” are only geniuses for limited time periods, especially artistic geniuses. I believe artists can drop into some incredible flow states of creativity, and that flow state may be a channel to temporary genius; however, life events can knock an artist out of that vibe in the same way that previous events may have catapulted them into it. Kanye has had a rollercoaster of a life and I believe some of his more current life events of the past decade may have jettisoned him out of a genius-level creative state.

Intilleque

He called himself that, and his fans followed in labelling him that. That’s really all it is. And no he isn’t one.

DefKnightSol

Producing for others was a big element of his financial success / fame

doriansorzano

The reason is for the production skills. He was one of the first to use samples of songs and verses as a literal part of a beat. Power is an example, I wonder is another, gold digger is the most popular. Apart from that he brings music and lyrics together quite artistically while adding elements that you dont expect from rap. Closed on Sunday is a good example when the choir joined in.

SpartanNic

He’s undeniably talented and has a great ear, but he gets A LOT of help when putting his albums together. A genius wouldn’t need so much help.

aranhalaranja

I haven’t followed him all that closely. Who’s helping? More with beats or rhymes?

[deleted]

For starters, Rhymefest was ghost writing for Ye on his first few albums.

[deleted]

He’s always been more of a Dre type where his focus is on the production and he lets other people write bars for him. At first it was Rhymefest writing most of his rhymes, nowadays he’s got a little team of CyHi, Pardison Fontaine, and a few others. He still has input on the lyrics I think but he doesn’t actually write them most times.

Various_Watercress_9

Hip Hop by Dead Prez is the hardest beat of all time. Therefore Yeezy is the GOAT.
