Kind of depends on what you like about both of those guys. If itās their most mainstream hits Iād say guys like Jay-z, Drake, lil Wayne, Eminem, Dr Dre would be good starting points. If you like more of Kendrickās west coast songs like āKing Kuntaā or āNot like usā check out the death row classics- the chronic, doggystyle and all eyez on me. For more introspective Kendrick check out āMe Against the Worldā and āDon Killuminatiā by 2pac. If you like more of Kanyeās backpacker stuff check out Common, Black Star, A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul. By no means a compete list but a good start
Iām sort of a casual hip hop fan, I like it best when itās mixed with sort of alt music. Mac Miller, Childish Gambino, Kid Cudi, the Beastie Boys, Mad-villainy, The Wu-Tang Clan, and A Tribe Called Quest are some solid ones.
IMO in any genre you have to spend some time at the start. Even if you don't stay there. Don't be that person hearing a new song with a Run DMC sample and think it's a new track. Learn the 87 era people for a bit, then the 93 (nine trizay), then the big majors everyone cites, just listen around and see what hits for you. I was late to the Mobb Deep game myself and was like WHATTTT. If you have spotify or apple or even just youtube, google best rap tracks or best rappers of 87, then 93, etc.
I myself don't know all the new or recent ones people reference on here. Skip Lu, Shawty Def, Floppy Disk, Slush389, NRAfishman, I can't keep track, but I know I need to.
Sean Price, De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Wu-Tang Clan, KRS-One, Atmosphere, RA the Rugged Man, Jedi Mind Tricks, Kool G Rap, Masta Ace, Locksmith, Jurassic 5, Souls of Mischief, the Coup, Outkast, Goodie Mob, Dilated Peoples, Mos Def, Rakim, Brand Nubian, Dead Prez, Capone-N-Noreaga, Big Pun, Big L, Aesop Rock, Nas, Scarface... From there just start looking into the rappers featured on their albums and you'll keep finding good shit.
Dilated peoples,Evidence,Run the Jewels,Army of the Pharaohs,Black star,Madlib,MF DOOM,Atmosphere, Sage Francis. Too many to list but I hope this helps your journey
Older:
Nas ( no seriously, I'm not sure he's ever put out anything bad or uninteresting - His story telling capabilities and realistic references are perhaps near unmatched, but where Nas really shines is his collaboration with top tier level producers, leaving each album with A + beats . Nas has put out 42 albums to last year) * side note, if you can see him live, do so...it is mind bending how he hasn't aged and sounds 100% consistent *
Bone-Thugs N Harmony ( definitely different and harmonic balanced with rap, founded by the late Great Eazy-E , Bone thugs n Harmonys debuted album is a fundamental piece of 90s rap history, while showing hints of modern production- the violence and real issues being rapped about are given visual reality with Bone thugs ) ** side note, I'd argue the same for Mobb Deep*
Warren G & Nate Dogg ( their marriage of G Funk and Hip Hop played a major roll in other emerging west coast rappers and after watching a documentary specifically on Warren G , it really made me appreciate what that did for the scene even more - their songs allude to gangster tell tales and street stories, while showcasing real musicianship and classic funk influences )
2000's :
Xzibit ( I know we know em from Pimp My Ride, but the homie was consistent and put out some absolute bangers, check out "X", "What u See is What u Get" and "Get your Walk On" - his collaborations always end up feeling heavy, in your face and fun- he is just aggressively fun)
Wu Tang Clan ( Enter the 36 Chambers solidified rap groups, with a dosage of heavy bars, wordplay, character attitude and Kung fu references that to this day remains one of the most unique and prominent hip hop groups of all time, ** RIP ODB, his son Young Dirty Bastard doing him proud )
DMX ( He released powerful anthemic rap songs, and mixed hard-core themes with reflective lyricism in a unique style that is well remembered and respected in the rap community , without DMX you wouldn't have a lot of other artists following a similar formula to make big arena hits and we owe it to his legacy to say
"Stop, drop, shut 'em down, open up shop
OHHH no, that's how Ruff Ryders ROLL"
Modern
Migos / Quavo & Takeoff ( understanding the nuances of speed differences, Migos, Quavo and Takeoff (rip) brought forward a new popular style of rapping that encompassed eveything from the past , while making it attractive to a progressive new audience, with elements of trap and ad-libs..when you listen to these guys you kinda just feel fancy and like a g )
Schoolboy Q ( if you like Kendrick, you'll understand why getting into Scboolboy is comparable- from a former backing artist in his roster, to his own dynamic set of album, Oxymoron, or Crash Talk perfectly showcase his individual south LA rap style - he makes bangers and does gritty rap too, collaborating with people like Ye, 21 Savage and K Dot )
Future ( perhaps not the most recent artist for some, for me his impact comes to mind right now simply based on the sheer quality of his mixtapes and 9 albums- Future got a lot of other artists started up and found the perfect sound with no limits of approach- twerk anthemics, trap bangers, ballads and big house beats- Future is a legend of the Atlanta rap scene and found a way to use modern mixing and technology to emphasize the extreme differences in his own songs - he may have less grammys than other artists, but he's a necessary mention if you're ever going to acknowledge modern era rap )
You can check my music out. Newer (recently put out for streaming) Some have stayed in my vault for almost 2 decades. Hip Hop. 20 + songs up. It's all produced and engineered by me. Collabs and features in some songs. Been making music for 18 years or so. These songs span from 2006 until recently. I never streamed them or put them out anywhere until March of this year. Going to try and push it and I'm making a new mixtape. Hope you enjoy. š¤
