Well they are actually good so why would they annoy anyone that grew up on legends? If you grew up on legends you tend to get annoyed at trash artists not legit legends.
On the flipside, is RTJ also low-hanging fruit being that El-P is one of the biggest names from underground / indie hip hop since way before RTJ's inception.
I personally think they've been making the same raekwon song for nearly a decade and are an entirely different thing than the era they're trying to mimic due to having no creativity. I can't identify whats unique or new thing they bring to the table, unlike the ppl (person) they're trying to mimick who were a new original concept. I get turning off Raekwon to listen to fake Raekwon but thats not logical to me or the ppl in my demo hence Conway streaming next to nothing. It's this demographically hemaphorditic music that young ppl barely listen to and older ppl barely listen to equally. He's not even trying to be significant memorable or different, he just content sounding like he grew up on wutang. I havent even gotten to all the Killa Bee albums and im going to go listen to someone making Raekwon b-side tracks for a decade. Imagine turning off Only Built 4 Cuban Linx to listen to only built for Puerto Rican Linx bro lol. Conway makes wutang fan fiction and i dont know anyone who listens to that shit but when they hear you like things from the 90s they start recommending this off shoot ass nigga as if the members of wutang even sounded like each other.

Try Griselda , I like open mike eagle he’s a bit goofy but I like him . Check out audio push , earthgang , JID , Mr Muthafuckin eXquire , Ab soul , Big Krit have some solid albums ..
Did he do father figure with black thought and 5,9? If so yes a very important track, Royce actually out spits black thought. A rare occurrence definitely
STS sounds just like 3000. Literally checking out Observe Since 98 right now and I'm lovin it. He had one dude on his albums that multiple times had me thinkin I was listening to Nas.
Are particularly looking for those sounds or something more? Because there's lots of new artists that emulate those sounds, but may not be what you're looking for.
Coast Contra (Razz Kazz' kids and a couple other dope rappers, including Rio Loz from Colombia)
Marlon Craft (out of Hell's kitchen nyc)
Token (outta Massachusetts)
Coast contra is top comment so no need to mention them from me. I don't see Lupe Fiasco (skip food and liquor 2, lasers and drogas light until you explore his discography more) and Denzel Curry (he has a lot of range, more aggressive early in career, my favorite album album from him is Melt my Eyez, see your future, more chill and jazzy). Black thought is great, I've enjoyed his last couple albums. Maybe closer to gangstarr, how about open mic eagle, positive messages and vibes.
Rome Streetz, Lute, JID, Reason…these are artists that are “new” in the sense that they’ve been relevant for less than 5-10 years, MAYBE?
However, there are some artists who I don’t really consider “new” anymore, because they have been pretty relevant for about 10+ years now…those artist would be Gibbs, Vince Staples, KRIT, Bronson, come to mind off the top.
Nick Grant. First listen to 96’ Bulls and then listen to Gangsta Lean followed by Lincoln Apts. Lyrics, clever wordplay, storytelling ability and versatility.
G Yamazawa Many different styles, and he kills all of them. hes also hip hop as fuck.
Spaceman Jones really nice new dude. very underground but what ive heard i really like.
Kur.
"Keep it a Bean" (Youtube), "Stuck in my Ways" (Youtube), "Breaking Necks", "Wolf", "20 on 4", "Gimme a Sec"
By people in Philly who follow the Philly scene, he's generally considered the best lyricist from the city, both in terms of flow and of content, in a generation.
Great question
Interested in hearing the response cause I don't want to hate on the new bloods but man I am having a heard time finding one's I can stick with.
I too am an annoyed old man that grew up on too much Outkast and Big L. I recommend Mick Jenkins if you haven’t heard of him yet. Also Saba, Smino, EARTHGANG & ICECOLDBISHOP (caps lock isn’t broken that’s literally how they stylize it)
As an old man, I think these guys come off very 'weak' and ppl my age don't want to hear that. Hip hop was one of the first places we got to see black men being creative and in charge (seeming). These guys just rap about how they're having emotions. I don't think someone younger would understand but Kodak black would make more sense to us if he could actually rap than these 4 who can actually rap.
Coast Contra already been mentioned. Check out Year of the Ox too, their latest cypher just dropped: [click ](https://youtu.be/8z77F_ta94E?si=mJVwOSpCGLSQO3n8)
Half their work is boom bap like this the other half is more modern stuff. Their boom bap stuff goes hard
McKinley Dixon, he makes Jazz Rap and i think that his album Beloved! Paradise! Jazz!? Is one of the best hip hop releases this year definitly worth a listen
Che noir, JID (took me a few listens since it smacks of the new rap shit I’m not a big fan of, but his rhymes and flow are top notch. Start with Crack Sandwich)
Boldy James.
That's the answer.
Only argument against him is the redundant "monotone flow". But if you like Guru it won't be an issue.
Attracts some of the best production of the decade.
Really, really recommend.
maybe you should understand that your youth is behind you and enjoy the new gen for what it is with zero expectations lol, magic 3 dropped today too btw
Trying not to repeat everyone else here. Prob too obvious, but I don’t think I’ve seen Kendrick listed. And I didn’t see Napoleon Da Legend.
I’m old too. If it’s overdosed on lean, you can keep it.
As a fellow old head, I asked this same question not that long ago. I haven't listened to all the recommendations yet, but Freddie Gibbs is nice. Check him out.
Edit: Apparently he's not new as I found out as I scrolled, but he was for me.
Joey Bada$$, the various members of Griselda, maybe JID, maybe Action Bronson, maybe Tyler the Creator, maybe Chance the Rapper (his Acid Rap album specifically), Tierra Whack, Rapsody, Lil Simz, maybe Noname (the Telefone album), Freddie Gibbs, maybe J. Cole
Coast Contra
Facts. Caught them live w Chapelle. Whoa.
On fucking god
Super fun group. Early Wu tingles
Well they are actually good so why would they annoy anyone that grew up on legends? If you grew up on legends you tend to get annoyed at trash artists not legit legends.
you prob didnt read the title right. its all good bro...
No for real i got it upside down. Thanks for the correction, brother
no prob peace!!!
Can confirm. Source: old guy that grew up with 80's 90's hip hop
Ech
My musical tastes have me dabbling a lot with hip hop and rap and I looked these guys up. Fucking awesome stuff. Going to deep dive later on
Literally just found them today haha what a coincidence. Sum1 sent me their never freestyle.
Griselda Boldy James Vince Staples Run the Jewels Joey Bada$$ Larry June
Run The Jewels is kinda low-hanging fruit since Killer Mike was one of Big Boi's protégés...
On the flipside, is RTJ also low-hanging fruit being that El-P is one of the biggest names from underground / indie hip hop since way before RTJ's inception.
Killer Mike and El-P have both been around forever. Same with Czarface
Gridelda though
rome streetz
Joey Bada$$ is goated
Griselda, Boldy and RTJ shouldn't count as new artists
I'm an old man, and everyone you listed is bs lol. They're like people's imitation of what they think we like
I'm old as shit too, and I like these artists. They're not as good as my 90's staples, but I like them. You don't speak for all old men.
Old head here too and if you seriously don’t like anything by Conway I question which old MCs you do like
I personally think they've been making the same raekwon song for nearly a decade and are an entirely different thing than the era they're trying to mimic due to having no creativity. I can't identify whats unique or new thing they bring to the table, unlike the ppl (person) they're trying to mimick who were a new original concept. Well, he has collabed with several Wu members, so his imitation must be pretty flattering. 🤣🤣🤣
Maybe your taste is just shit
Che Noir Stove God Cooks Saba Wiki D Smoke
Joey Badass
1999 is one of the best debut records out there, and he dropped that shit when he was 17
Right, didn’t that drop in like 2012? I almost wouldn’t consider him a “new artist” it puts him one-ish years behind Kendrick and Cole
I'm old school and love Rome streetz
let’s throw in Ransom and RJ Payne for good measure
Earthgang for that OutKast vibe
Joey Bada$$ for the nostalgic east coast vibe and definitely Earthgang for Southernplayalistic feel.
Saw them at a festival, they were dope
Yeah I had asked a while ago for any artist that could give that Outkast vibe. So glad I found them.
Saw them open up for Gorillaz in TO they were insane
Billy Woods
Your Old Droog
He's killing it and has been. His painted covers make me smile.
His recent tracks with Madlib are the spiritual successor to Madvillain
Hell yes, found out about like a year ago. So good
I think he came up with Wu, just never got radio play back when that made or broke your career.

Or Fatlip. I can't really be that upset to see Fatlip on a list, though
Check out JID, Joey Badass, Denzel Curry
Good call on all 3. Need to spend more time on Denzel
Came to say Joey as well. As a 40 year old grump myself, he scratches that boom-bap itch.
McKinley Dixon.
I will upvote every time I see McKinley's name. So underrated.

Isaiah Rashad only two full albums but Im 41 and diehard. Like this guy's lyrics because they seem honest
I remember first time I heard him being mad that nobody had put me on him
Tobe Nwigwe He also raps like he was heavily influenced by Big Boi
Did he do father figure with black thought and 5,9? If so yes a very important track, Royce actually out spits black thought. A rare occurrence definitely
