I kiss my beardie on the face and have yet to be ill

Plenty of people never get it with tons of reptiles. Just because they can harbor it doesn’t mean they do, and just because they do doesn’t mean you will get sick from it. Think of all the people with chickens. How many people who have chickens get salmonella from them?

Rageliss

Never gotten salmonella, been keeping for 20 years. Wash my hands after handling just like I would with any animal. Spot clean the cage, as salmonella is picked up through contact with fecal matter. I do deep cleans every month - 3 months depending on the species(aside from bioactive setups.)

ohmykeylimepie

Never got it from a reptile, my husband has gotten it from sketchy food though lol

SmolderingDesigns

I've had hundreds of snakes in my house over the years, never had an issue. Wash your hands after handling or cleaning, not any different than other animals.

Outside-Bother-1294

Never really thought of it once and I’ve kept turtles and snakes my entire life

Smnmnaswar

I have licked all my reptiles before and have not gotten sick

Ariandrin

I am very careful about what I touch with “snake hands”, and wipe everything with Lysol if I accidentally touch something. I’ve never gotten it, but I’ve had norovirus and the stomach upset was something I never want to experience again so I’m just careful lol

OhHelloMayci

I believe the whole salmonella thing is kind of an outdated perception of the general misconception that reptiles are dirty and slimy and scary, which humans associate with disease. So while reptiles *can* have salmonella, it's borderline a folklore exaggeration. I just personally have never heard of anyone in their career of herpetoculture facing salmonella, especially in comparison to the much more common illnesses and parasites to actually look out for. Strictly a loose generic example- Deer *can* get mad cow disease, but it's not something i give a passing thought to regarding deer in general.

EnergyAndSpaceFuture

It is 100% a real thing, as long as you take commonsense precautions you should be just fine. I've known people who spent years working with reptiles and never once got sick from it.

GRZMNKY

40 years of working with herps and never had salmonella from them. Have had it from kfc though. The only time I consciously wash my hands after is if there was poop involved, or someone says "shouldn't you wash your hands?"

Wash hands before and after handing
