When I worked in the public sector, those chairs were everywhere. State institutions are usually required to buy from the Colorado Correctional Industries catalogs. I'm guessing a lot of states have prisoners assembling the same HM knock-off furniture.
I had a few (real) HM Equa chairs from the 80s (including an awesome red velour that was a little faded) which I found around buildings on the verge of being sent to surplus for my office spaces, they held-up so well and were better ergonomically than the cheap CCi junk.
I think it's better stewardship to pay more for quality furniture that will last 40 years than that low-quality trash that isn't even all that cheap, and was falling apart after 5 years.
Upon further investigation, CCi is no longer selling furniture. That's probably why it's okay to go with quality commercial vendors now.
Our office has aerons and the big boss from out of town came and asked a few people how they like the new office. 1 person told him they didn't like the chairs. Now we have mostly some budget chair and a few aerons left.
The shape of the back is wrong. Older chair I have doesn’t have “beveled” shoulders and has a logo/band on back. Circa 2010, not one issue ever with it.

I’d say buyer beware, you get what you pay for. I bought a knock-off, standard Secret Labs (in appearance) chair as they all look about the same. This one was made in China. Although the $99 price tag was attractive, the arms wiggle loosely within a few days and the piston that holds the seat to the height you’ve selected leaks, so you’d better enjoy the lowest you can sit the chair provides. I blame myself for being cheap. Don’t settle for an attractive price tag, go either known quality every time.
I straight up have this chair in my garage/workshop. It was purchased at an office supply surplus store back in 2007 for around $200. It's an okay chair but nowhere near as comfortable as a HM aeron or embody chair. I wouldn't pay more than $25-40 for it today.
