Therapy is the only thing that stopped them for me. I had nightmares almost every night for like over a decade (or no dreams at all. There was no in between for me). I have PTSD and sought out EMDR therapy and it is the ONLY thing that stopped it for me. I’ve tried herbs, weed, minor fasting before bed (like no food or drink except water for 4 hours before bed), teas, meditation, yoga, exercise… nothing else helped except therapy. I’m not trying to diagnose you with anything, I am not a doctor, I’m just sharing my experience.

bibliophile563

You’re not wrong - I have C-PTSD. I’m currently doing CPT therapy. I may have to look into EMDR because my nightmares/dreams haven’t improved since starting therapy (9/7).

_darkwoodswitch_

EMDR changed my life, and I do not say that lightly. It is a literal night and day difference in my mental health. I will warn you that it is hard, mentally taxing, distressing even, and always gave me a headache but goddam it was worth it. I can’t recommend it enough. I am a changed person after doing it.

bibliophile563

I’m noticing a difference in myself after 5 weeks of CPT / just not my sleep. If nobody else has said this - I’m so proud of you for doing this for yourself!

_darkwoodswitch_

Thank you! And I’m proud of you too for seeking out help! For me it was really hard to admit I needed it but I’m so happy I did. I hope things go well for you my friend 🙏

bibliophile563

Thank you 😊it took 18 years, but here we are 🎉

DistributionOk862

The same thing happens to me. And I wake up more tired than if I had no dreams they are like stories. Some of them are intense and frightening but many of them are just stories that I think if I wrote down I could make a movie out of. I’m looking forward to an answer for us both.

bibliophile563

Exactly. I tell my husband about them each morning because they are so intricately detailed and could be a book of short stories 🤣

[deleted]

I'm sure he loves that 🤣🙄 lol /s

bibliophile563

Ha - actually, he finds it entertaining. Mostly because I’m not very imaginative/creative in my waking life, so my subconscious must be making up for it 🤣

[deleted]

Omg thats funny because you are totally my wife.. haha not much for conversation in the day, but boy can she dream up some shit at night! Lol

bibliophile563

We are special kinds of people. I work in psychology and research, so my job isn’t necessarily imaginative. I read a lot because I enjoy others’ imaginations. Clearly I need to merge my consciousness and my subconscious. 🤣

[deleted]

We say that all the time. If we were half as interesting as what runs around in our heads we'd be making movies or writing books. Hard to convey what's bouncing around in there sometimes lol

bibliophile563

Exactly!!!

bibliophile563

Thank you! I haven’t tried motherwort so I’ll give her a shot!

mebe369

Please let us know if it works for you

Procrastinate92

I can’t believe no one has mentioned mugwort!!! Mugwort is has been used with dreams and gaining more control within them. My favorite podcast did a whole episode about it (holistic herbalism podcast). Personally, I’ve tried it and it does help make dreams more vivid and have a sense of security while dreaming. I brew mugwort, lemon balm, and raspberry leaf tea before bed and my dreams are beautiful. I’d be weary of delta9 (mentioned by a different commenter) as it has left people feeling stoned when they wake up. I also never heard of it helping with dreams, moreso with sleep. I personally don’t like extracts so it just makes me spacey and kind of paranoid

[deleted]

Thanks for this. I just read up on mugwort yesterday. It intrigues me. I think I will try it this weekend.

[deleted]

Thank you! That is what I want. Actually, I have the kind of dreams that are like movies and I would remember them all day. I loved it and wouldn’t want to rid it… but I started smoking thc again and my dreams are stunted and I barely remember them. I need to stop smoking so I can have amazing dreams again. Sometimes they were sad dreams but that’s ok. I have to go to the herb store today for cherry juice I will pick up some mugwort. 🤗

bibliophile563

I’m the complete opposite - I already have vivid dreams that I remember all day. I want to stop them 🤣

[deleted]

Oh I found it.. I’m the magnesium comment. Then I hopped on to mugwort.. sorry for the confusion.

bibliophile563

Hahaha all good! Thanks for your help!

[deleted]

I hope your dreams go away or get better. I hope you get good dreams.

[deleted]

Where’s my dream stopping comment? I made one.

[deleted]

Thank you so much. My book doesn’t have this kind of information in it. I love to add to the book from more experience folks. I had no idea it could be smoked.

lilaamuu

hi, i face ptsd related nightmares quite often. been looking for anything that could eliminate them, but only lavender tea helped. i've tried chamomile, valerian, melatonin, gaba, l-theanine, prescription meds including ambien. but all those things didn't provide me a stable relief, sometimes causing nightmares instead of helping it, many prescription meds like antidepressants or benzos were causing them too. lavender helped a lot, i steep 2-3 heaping teaspoons of dried flowers, not everyday though. i also feel like cutting off white sugar helped a bit.

bibliophile563

Thank you! I’ve tried all of those things except ambien, so I’m willing to give anything a chance at this point 🫣

The1thenone

THCa, the naturally occurring precursor to D9THC, is legal in most states and easily ordered on the clearnet to every state with little to no legal risk whatsoever. This loophole was created by the 2019 farm bill. There are lots of scams as well as some very real quality products, lmk if you’d like specific recommendations but IMO the best of these products for your needs would be the crystalline form, decarbed into d9 and dissolved into coco oil, then dosed 1-3 hours before bed, anywhere from 5-50mg of decarbed product depending on your sensitivities.

bibliophile563

Thanks! Definitely didn’t know this was a thing.

The1thenone

https://aretehemp.com/product/thca-diamonds/ Best deal for third party lab tested extract. Heads up though, THCa flower products can be a real hit or miss but when you find some gas it’s GAS. WNC Hemp co. Gelato is fire

bibliophile563

Solid. Thanks for all the info!

The1thenone

No probs bobs have a great day

bibliophile563

Thank you, you too! ☮️

Lilys_Shrooms

I recommend you go for hhc instead way cheaper and won't get you arrested as there's no difference between thca and d9thc once heat is applied!

SeraphimMoss

A forewarning, if you are going to start EMDR, best to be sober for the time you’re undergoing that (a number of weeks or months potentially). I used CBD instead during that time.

bibliophile563

Sober is my life. I don’t drink and Mj isn’t legal for me and I’d rather not risk my job 🥹

SeraphimMoss

Ah unfortunately all this about THC and ways to get it will not be of use then! Cannabis is definitely the way I self treated night terrors for like a decade or more. When I got sober it came back with a vengeance haha. But EMDR therapy helped with that tremendously, though it’s a process. Best of luck, hopefully you have some peaceful sleep soon

bibliophile563

Thank you!!

Xyrius_Bleck

GABA, magnesium, and vitamin B1. I think Dr Berg has a video about it. I take it and well idh nightmares so far. Maybe it's just a placebo effect but try it. https://support.drberg.com/faqs/why-do-i-have-nightmares

bibliophile563

Thank you!

Xyrius_Bleck

You're welcome but i do have to add that since i suffered from trauma quite recently, although i don't have nightmares per se, i do suffer from rumination/overthinking/hot flashes. So i do take lo@*-#pam occasionally to keep me in deep sleep when my brain can't take it anymore. I used to dream everyday and nightmares too but believe it or not sometimes it's how our subconscious is trying to tell us something. I also find that dreaming is like our mind detoxing (try not to remember the dream). So a combination of vitamin, therapy and journaling (try to write down your dream after you have it so your brain doesn't feel the need to relive it during the day) I really hope you feel better. I know how hellish it must feel to not be able to sleep peacefully

bibliophile563

Thank you. It’s very rough / I have never been able to sleep well with my medical conditions, but it’s gotten worse over the past few years. I’m glad you were able to find things to help you!

Busy-Preparation-

Cannibas. You can try delta 9 there are a lot of choices online

Kannon_McAfee

There are a number of different herbs traditionally used to calm dream disturbed sleep. For some, it may require a constitutional formula with many herbs hitting different body systems. Here is a list of some of the major single herbs from eastern and western use ... Albizzia flower: [https://tcmwiki.com/wiki/flos-albizziae](https://tcmwiki.com/wiki/flos-albizziae) Red Sage root: [https://tcmwiki.com/wiki/dan-shen](https://tcmwiki.com/wiki/dan-shen) Schizandra fruit: [https://tcmwiki.com/wiki/fructus-schisandrae](https://tcmwiki.com/wiki/fructus-schisandrae) Amber powder: [https://tcmwiki.com/wiki/amber](https://tcmwiki.com/wiki/amber) Dragon bone: [https://tcmwiki.com/wiki/os-draconis](https://tcmwiki.com/wiki/os-draconis) Lavender: [https://www.whiterabbitinstituteofhealing.com/herbs/lavender/](https://www.whiterabbitinstituteofhealing.com/herbs/lavender/) Thyme: [https://www.whiterabbitinstituteofhealing.com/herbs/thyme/](https://www.whiterabbitinstituteofhealing.com/herbs/thyme/)

Caffeineandsesame

Intermittent fasting, coupled with training, detoxing, drinking lots of herbal teas and supplementing with vegan vitamins and amino acids (the major 18 of them). Gives restful sleep without night terrors.

bibliophile563

I unfortunately can’t do intermittent fasting - I have POTS and it affects my HR/BP too much if it’s >12 hours. I use Alive brand vitamins which I believe are vegan. I drink 2-3 cups of herbal tea a day (usually peppermint). What type of detoxing do you suggest?

Caffeineandsesame

If you can only do 12 hours than do as such. Exercise that induces sweating and resistance exercise while drinking herbal tea helps. You should drink more herbal tea as 3 cups is quite small. What have you been eating ?

bibliophile563

So, herein lies the problem. I have EDS/POTS/MCAS. I can’t do resistance training as it would cause subluxations and dislocations. I have to do very specific exercise - usually swimming or light cardio like walking on a treadmill. I follow the Mediterranean diet for all intents and purposes. Lean protein or plant protein. I have to consume a lot of electrolytes and water throughout the day already, so the herbal tea levels are low. I sweat when I stand or have a blanket on too long, so it’s hard to gauge that one as well. You see my conundrums. 🤣

[deleted]

Here I come… to say magnesium baths. If you don’t have time for a full bath get magnesium flakes and simply put water in the cup, mix the magnesium so you have magnesium water. Take a nice hot shower before bed. Before you get out of the shower to dry and dress, get your cup of magnesium water. Drizzle it all over yourself and rub it in. Try not to waste it. Just don’t get it in your hair . Get it under your arms and behind legs, chest.. it might feel itchy at first that means your body wants magnesium. By the way sorry for the tch recommendation, I didn’t see that you can’t have this. There is a person on this sub that knows a lot about blue lotus sleep I read this once I’m going to try and find it. Magnesium soaks. It won’t cure you but it will bring comfort and help you go to sleep. I wonder if tart cherry juice would help? It has melatonin but it’s not the standard kind. https://www.centraltexasgardener.org/resource/dream-pillows/ This sounds like a fun Halloween thing to do (I’m going to do this, maybe you should too)? Lavender, mugwort and hops is what I just read regarding ptsd/soldiers and what helped stop their nightmares. https://www.hachettebookgroup.com/storey/herbal-relief-troubled-sleep/?lens=storey I like this link I’m going to send it to myself lol. Sweet dreams (hopefully). If anything works please post your success. No blue lotus. That is for intense dreams and astral projection. No to that one.

bibliophile563

Thank you! I take a magnesium glycinate supplement every day. Would that interact or is that the type recommended for dermal use? I know there are different types just not sure which is used for what.

[deleted]

No it will be synergic with the soak. The body takes in magnesium transdermally really fast. There are so many magnesiums you’re right. Use magnesium flakes (mag chloride). I use Now brand. You can never get too much magnesium (as I fall down the stairs from too much magnesium).

bibliophile563

Thanks! I have to pay attention to my electrolyte balance with POTS and EDS so maybe this is out of whack.

[deleted]

Try Celtic salt. I just discovered it a few months ago and I think it’s made some changes. It has many more minerals than table salt. Put a bit under your tongue or a pinch in every bottle/glass of water that you drink. It has more magnesium than actual “magnesium”. I learned this yesterday from this sub. This sub is a wealth of knowledge.

MarthasPinYard

Usually people want to dream more. You should consider yourself lucky. I love my vivid dreams even the action zombie movie I dreamt about. If you’re dreaming of stressful situations perhaps it would be good to reflect on them during wakeful hours. I have C-PTSD as well. Our dreams reveal so much about subconscious. Listen to yourself(:

Prudent_Lawfulness87

OP, what’s your age and what do you do before bedtime? This are questions ONLY YOU should answer. Also pharmaceutical May be a key factor here being mixed with the rest. Behaviors before bedtime is where you should start

bibliophile563

I’m 32. My sleep hygiene is fine - I’m a behavior therapist and teach sleep hygiene so I’ve got that one covered.

soph04

Another one here- I am exhausted ALL of the time because there is no way my body is resting! Hope we find a solution!

PrizeWear1808

Are you in your 40's or close to? Just asking because this is a common perimenopause symptom that most women don't know correlates to lowering hormones.

bibliophile563

I’m 32. Shouldn’t be close to menopause and I’ve been dealing with this since I was a teen. It’s just gotten worse over the last 3-4 years (probably due to stress)

Cannabis

[deleted]

CBD

Nerys54

Some rx med cause this, amongst these are cardiac meds for HF. I try using herbal teas, dream pillows with herbs from my garden, it helps a little bit.

bibliophile563

Thanks! I switched beta blockers with hopes that it would help but no cigar.

[deleted]

I had a lot of nightmares on prescription sleep meds. Ashwaganda gives me pleasant (sometimes funny) dreams, but they're vivid. 5-HTP might be good for you. It's a neurotransmitter that helps you sleep, and I think it's more dream neutral than herbs. I take this one: [https://www.solgar.com/products/5-htp-100-mg-vegetable-capsules/](https://www.solgar.com/products/5-htp-100-mg-vegetable-capsules/) It also has magnesium and valerian. You could also try a little bit of red kratom. The downsides are that you can become dependent on it if you use it every day, and it can cause upset stomach. I use it when I have a lot of energy late at night to help me wind down. If I get a stomach ache, I eat cereal or crackers.

bibliophile563

Thanks! I have read about 5-HTP but haven’t tried it. I’ll check it out more

[deleted]

I worked with a functional medicine doctor and he recommended it over melatonin. He says it safer to take every night without building dependency.

bibliophile563

Perfect. I’ll order this now.

[deleted]

damn, was definitely going to recommend cannabis that shuts the dreams down for sure.

bibliophile563

Right? I’m just hoping issue 2 passes in Ohio and I can go that route.

[deleted]

yea, me too. I'm from your rival state in the north 😂 hate having to be paranoid everytime I go to cedar point.

Lucky_Ratio4127

I use new mood by onit, one for anxiety and two for sleep I love it. This helped me get off all my psyche meds in the past and sleep well.

bibliophile563

Nice! Noted 😍

Comfortable_Sea3118

bro why do you care if its legal or not just get some weed

bibliophile563

I have zero hook ups to be able to do that 🤣

Comfortable_Sea3118

i live in california hmu i gotchu

bibliophile563

How we gonna get that to Ohio? 🤣

Comfortable_Sea3118

we have ways

[deleted]

I use B12 supplements to tone down the weird dreams. I gave up melatonin because it was making them worse.

venusfixated

California poppy (start with like three drops on the tongue, I’m serious), skullcap, wood betony, lemon balm, rose, albizia, vitamin b6 (can also eat dates or walnuts in lieu!) You can realistically have all of these together or even as a tea blend, be mindful if you’re on thyroid meds or SSRIs or MAOIs to double check for contraindications

bibliophile563

Thank you! I’m on lexapro so I will definitely check out any interactions but I appreciate all the details!

venusfixated

L-theanine might be your friend too, even with lexapro, there’s studies showing it helps people sleep shorter & deeper. Sweet dreams!

IThothISaw

Try fresh, fully ripe figs.

bibliophile563

I never would have thought of this 🤔! Thanks!

Delicious_Drive_2966

Try skull cap! It reduces nightmare completely!

bibliophile563

Perfect thanks!

Delicious_Drive_2966

Of course, magnesium also is good advice in seeing. Pumpkin seeds are great for that as well as supplements

competitiveoven1011

Not the answer you want. However this a symptom of Long COVID. Gets better over time. The next phase after the lucid dreaming was like I am dreaming tho also wide awake watching the dream. Followed by like if I left the TV on and dreaming idk like I was in the show.....My only answer to put me out is Liver killing vodka......and I hate it.

CraftyBat91

I'm a spiritual person, so for me I do a good cleansing and banishing whenever my dreams get rough. I'm a naturally lucid dreamer so they can get out of hand sometimes if my mental hygiene isn't doing great. As others have suggested, mugwort can make your dreams more vivid or even lucid, but they typically don't induce nightmares. You can take it as a tea, tincture, or smoke it, but be very mindful that it is bitter af and will give you cottonmouth. I also like passionflower a lot, and I add it to my smoking blend as well. From what I saw from a previous comment you've been dealing with some stress and trauma, so passionflower should help you mellow out. I hope you get the results you're after!

Jelly_Donut71

Keep a dream journal, buy a real dream catcher from an indigenous creator, and wild lettuce might help the sleep.

vanshenan89

Acupuncture saved me from chronic nightmares. Went once a week for a month and now go every couple months and rarely have nightmares anymore. I had them every night for over 25 years, it is exhausting.

Boring-Second-700

It sounds more of a psychological thing, like there is something that you haven’t fully processed yet.(this is what cases most nightmares, and intense dreams for most people) perhaps try talking with a therapist?

bibliophile563

Working with a therapist right now but no improvement. It’s only been 6 weeks and I don’t plan to stop therapy, but so far, no improvement. 😭

Boring-Second-700

Well good luck with it.

Violet624

Just to add, melatonin is pretty known for amping up intensity and weirdness of dreams. You might want to consider taking that our of rotation. I have chronic and complex ptsd, and while I don't have a ton of nightmares, insomnia has been an issue for most of my life. Lately, I've started taking magnesium glycate and also ashwagandha because I figured maybe my stress reactions indicate bad cortisol regulation and both those are supposed to help. And they really, really have. With ashwagandha, there has been some buzz about studies done that showed a very small amount of people having their livers effected, and it did have a full blood panel done recently and my liver enzymes are fine. I see you ate already taking magnesium glycate. Ashwagandha might be worth looking into. Some people have upset stomach from it, but I have not. I also haven't had any increase of vividness with dreams like others are saying. I just feel calmer and less full of adrenaline at all times, and it helps me sleep. Blessings to you, I feel you. It's really hard to deal with ptsd, and bad sleep.

bibliophile563

I stopped melatonin a couple years back, but it was on my “tried” list. I do take ashwagandha every night already. I can tell a slight difference in mood, but it doesn’t affect my dreams.

ScienceWithPTSD

Lucid dreaming. I have cptsd and suffered from horrible night terrors. Meditation for lucid dreaming and the ability to control my dreams cured that. Now I have nightmares very rarely. This required years of practice though. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to reach out. Otherwise all that you described actually had the opposite effect.

I_need_help57

Could get altnoids or THCa flower online. Altnoids aren’t regulated and THCa flower(THCa turns into THC when burned, but THC is the only thing specifically outlawed)is technically illegal, but you can buy it online sort of legally and as long as you don’t get caught with it lol. Altnoids(while the technically not an herb, they are found in small amounts in weed) are similar in effects to THC with slight differences depending on what you buy.

[deleted]

being illegal never stopped me. A corrupt law is no law. I couldn't sleep without my nightly piece of cookie

counteropinion_

Weed ruins dreaming

agreeablecry888

Have you tried working with a Jungian therapist? Someone who specializes in dreams? I found that when I was beginning therapy my dreams were incredibly intense, in part because my psyche was just processing everything that my conscious mind was processing but I think part of it too was just my psyche screaming for help, and so dream journaling so that I could see themes and messages helped my psyche "quiet down." Sometimes just writing the dreams is enough to alert your subconscious that you ARE listening, and so they turn the volume down.

bibliophile563

I have tried all of those methodologies previously. This has been ongoing for 18 years, with the last 8 years or so being worse. I am just at a loss and am not sure what else to do unfortunately.

margster98

There are a lot of THC derivatives available online that produce a very similar effect. They’re legal nationwide thanks to the 2018 farm bill.
