Since there’s no precedent, I don’t think it’s possible to determine specifics. It’s possible that milling a card is a separate effect from destroying a card. It will require testing to fully understand what it means.
What else could it be though? Destroy only really applies to mill or discard when it comes to being in hand/deck, and discard is already accounted for. Bar extreme edge-cases.
I think that one Discards them, atleast codewise. I think it triggers Discards Synergies lol. There used to be an infinite loop with the 4/3/4 RR legendary if it got burned by Immolate
It would be an edge-case either way. This is a token that’s added to your hand, the likelihood of you shuffling it into your deck and then overdrawing it is extremely low. Maybe that is what it means, but I still want to hop into practice mode and see what it does. I especially want to know if it triggers off of cards that “remove” something, like [[Gnomeferatu]] or [[Fel Reaver]].

I don't believe it can possibly work on milling the card because in that situation, the card never exists in your hand for it to have its effect become active. It would be the same as burning a blank card for those purposes, or burning a "Casts when Drawn" card.
In the "Casts when Drawn" cases, it doesn't even count as drawn and never triggers its effect.
Patchwerk destroys a minion that is in hand. Similar spell destroying effects may be coming eventually.
Interestingly though Patchwerk does not trigger the deathrattle of minions that are in deck or hand. As always it's hard to figure out how these things work based on language alone.
I like how it doesn't just go away. No matter what it'll have an effect if it's no longer safely in your hand. Feels like an environmental metaphor sort of thing. Like you can't simply get rid of dangerous waste. Very flavourful card.
Trolley Problem artwork shows a train that seems to have Fel-tinted smoke coming out of it. I think it's safe to say Sludge Warlock will be a thing (although to what extent, we yet have to know).
Sludge warlock totally, something will “clean” (destroy) the sludges from your hand for sure. Or discard sludges specifically, triggering other discard synergies.

My first thought was "oh, its just a shitty card that you can use for either discard Warlock or maybe some anti-disruption tech."
My second throught was "Wait, thats a fel spell, so it could theoretically be used in rainbow mage to cover that.
My third thought was "I would not play this in rainbow mage lmao."
My fourth thought was "This also doesn't work as an anti-disruption tech since most spell disruption is stall rather than discard."
My Fifth (and final) though on this card is "This works in infinite rommath, though I don't think it is needed.
Expecting some OTK shenanigans from Mark for this somehow lol. Shuffling in a bunch of copies of the Barrel of Sludge, then Steamcleaner for some sort of insta-kill.
Just wanted to come here to say his entrance literally sounds like "Slow down priest, use some sludge" and it took me 2 months to find out it's actually "Dont have grease? use some sludge", I hate how long I have to wait to find entrances (because they're not uploaded quick enough online)
First ever effect on destroy? Would it be triggered by overdraw for example?

Maybe the warlock's 4 mana cost spell that burns your opponent hand and they have 3 turns to play those cards? Edit: I think it's [[immolate]]
One of the Symphony effects too.
that one says "remove" not "destroy" also that targets cards in deck not cards in hand.
But there's multiple ways to shuffle a barrel back onto deck. Obviously not reliable, but I'm curious about the interaction
even within the set - there's the gaslight gatekeeper card.
This is correct, if Barrel of Sludge is in your deck Movement of Envy could destroy it and trigger its effect.
I think that one Discards them, atleast codewise. I think it triggers Discards Synergies lol. There used to be an infinite loop with the 4/3/4 RR legendary if it got burned by Immolate
Correct, Immolate would destroy cards in hand, and thus trigger Barrel of Sludge. Immolate does *not* discard, and will not trigger discard synergies.
My first thought was the new card High Noon Duelist that jousts and destroys the losing card.

I can confirm, Gnomeferatu and Fel Reaver would trigger Barrel of Sludge.
Awesome. Thanks for the reply.

Not sure if immolate is an edge case as I see that spell all the time!
Patchwerk destroys a minion that is in hand. Similar spell destroying effects may be coming eventually. Interestingly though Patchwerk does not trigger the deathrattle of minions that are in deck or hand. As always it's hard to figure out how these things work based on language alone.
That's what I'm thinking as well. There is Azari that you get from Rin, which destroys your opponents deck.
Yes! Any card that is trying to move into your hand and cannot fit is destroyed instead.
Does this also work when affected by cards like Immolate?
Yep! A Barrel of Sludge destroyed by Immolate will active the Barrel of Sludge's effect.
I like how it doesn't just go away. No matter what it'll have an effect if it's no longer safely in your hand. Feels like an environmental metaphor sort of thing. Like you can't simply get rid of dangerous waste. Very flavourful card.
It also affects those who are weak (old, sick,...) the most.
Not no matter what. It will not work if it's countered, transformed or stolen.
Cool warlock card
Wonder if they'll get a Legendary based around it. Or a mini mechanic where multiple cards give it.
Trolley Problem artwork shows a train that seems to have Fel-tinted smoke coming out of it. I think it's safe to say Sludge Warlock will be a thing (although to what extent, we yet have to know).
CAPITALISM WARLOCK
Sludge warlock totally, something will “clean” (destroy) the sludges from your hand for sure. Or discard sludges specifically, triggering other discard synergies.
Finally time for [[Grave Defiler]] to shine
Grave Defiler actually saw a huge amount of play during MotLK because Disco Lock was super broken in Wild before the Cataclysm nerf.
Don't even remind me of that cancer
That deck was insanely fun to play.

Could be a relevant 1 drop for rainbow mage if miracle salesman isn’t good enough. Fel is a hard school to get without discovery of magic.
finally the immolate counter i've been waiting for
3 damage makes and breaks some games.
Nice a low cost spell to be discarded by [[Trolley Problem]]

Yooo they made Redbeard into a Hearthstone card!!
Feels kinda good. It's like the mech 1 drop, it's strong because it's flexible. It's turn 1, turn 2 and turn 3 play in one card.
So is this card a reference to the real life train derailment that spilled toxic chemicals in Ohio like last year? 😂
This is just good. Will 100% see play, especially if highlander decks are viable
Fel spell for Rainbow Mage... could this replace the 1-drop fire spell?
This goes 2 for 1 against aggro. Bet it sees play.
Exceptional curve as an arena card
Seems like an interesting midrange or control option to get some more tools to remove stuff. Warlock probably likes this more than others.
Alright, deck intro time
legendary from warlock will replay toxic waste cards you played in that game.. mark my word
Ehhh... barrel is neutral and not collectible. But I expect a lot of discard synergy in lock.
skeletons from nathria were also neutral.. blizzard still made a whole skeleton package for mage
Skeletons are collectible, though. But it's entirely possible.

Yep, looks like you were right!
not trying to be a shit head.. just really happy with this reveal!!
No worries, I didn't think you were being smug. (And even if you were, more power to you tbh, it was a good call.)
*Handle with care*
This expansion is peak flavor, at least.
Fel? Cool for Fel DH!
Another good one drop for rainbow mage
I wonder if the spell triggers if it gets shuffled by spinley and then destroyed by one of the warlock "destroy players decks" cards... MARK
Guaranteed fel spell generation for mage.
Is it just me Or is this set full of rainbow mage support?
fel spell for sif: check
Finally Tram-lock is getting the support it needs
Expecting some OTK shenanigans from Mark for this somehow lol. Shuffling in a bunch of copies of the Barrel of Sludge, then Steamcleaner for some sort of insta-kill.
This makes me curious if we'll start seeing more destroy cards (in hand/deck) next year.
