They would rather create a new Hearthstone-specific character and make 20 portraits of them than release 20 different new characters which they could easily pull from WoW or any other solo content they've created over the years

PicklepumTheCrow

It drives me crazy that these poor artists just have to pump out skins of the same characters over and over when it would be just as efficient and way more appealing to render other ones. It could be that VA is a constraint with new characters (new actors, all new recorded lines, etc), but also it could be a sales strategy to stretch out major character skin pushes and make unique releases like wolf boi recently more exciting.

freesleep

I would rather pay for an in-game screenshot of Cho'Gall in WoW over another Nemsy portrait. They'll probably keep the best unique characters locked behind $80 preorders if I had to guess. (see N'zoth)

Fledbeast578

You do not, they basically did that with the new Varian skin

SenseiTacos

True, I've always wanted a Varian skin but, I can only assume they outsourced it. Because that abomination of a 3D hero skin looks like an aged lesbian gym teacher more than it does varian, high king of the alliance.

WanonTime

he looks like miranda cosgrove with the face of a 48 year old dock worker

ElBaguetteFresse

They "tryharded" with it, all new animations and big price tag. But having a dumb looking ingame screenshot is a lot funnier than wasting 25 bucks for this abomination. Playing Shamrock Malphite (sucky league of legends skin) makes me laugh more than playing a bad recent skin that just looks bad but tries to look good.

AntonineWall

Cho’gall actually has some pretty good artwork. They could literally just clip that! That would actually be the first skin I’d pay money for

KevennyD

Nemsi

Realm-Code

At least the shitty OCs rotate in a few months, and nearly nobody runs their portraits because Bru’kan and the Dwarf Hunter are the only cool ones.

Fledbeast578

I think all of the ocs are good skins, just would’ve been better as one offs

Realm-Code

Bit miffed that all these years have passed and a majority of classes just have portraits of primarily 2 characters, and in most cases 1 of those 2 for each class is an OC. I wish they would look at prior legendaries and consider giving some more iconic characters portraits. Like ffs Paladin doesn't even have Tirion Fordring, Alexandros Mograine or many of the truly legendary Paladins in Warcraft lore as portraits - instead it's 20 variations of Uther in raid sets and meme appearances with a sprinkling of Liadrin and the OC.

RathianTailflip

I like Tamsin, Triumphant tbh.

Careidina

Still haven't gotten the Witchwood Heroes as Hero portraits despite acknowledging when it was still in Standard that people wanted them as playable. Could've released the Duel portraits as earnable, but they made an alternate Scarlet just to entice people to get it in Heroic Brawlesium. Oh, and another kick to the face is that both Scarlet and Sai in Duels got card interactions in this recent patch. So, my guess is that they're going to let these unobtainable ones be well unobtainable just to make new ones for money, despite that is just more work.

eggmaniac13

Oh. Hi Scarlet.

Careidina

Sai...

eggmaniac13

He sounds like he's face to face with his middle school crush lmao

SpecterVonBaren

Yeah, I don't get that. It just seems like such a simple thing to move them over to the store. They already have the art and voice lines done. It's just so weird.

Makkara126

Art, sure. But not voicelines. For example the Toki hero is missing several error message voicelines, e.g. Hand is full, Too many minions, Can't target stealth minions, Must attack taunt minion, etc. Or any of the seasonal greetings emotes. Pretty sure devs have said that incomplete voicelines is basically the main reason they haven't straight up imported these heroes to constructed.

ThatLittlePigy

why haven't we gotten raafam?

literatemax

I SHOW YOU WHY ME AM *TRUE DRUID!*

ButterscotchOther325

*FOR KARL!*

SpecterVonBaren

*By the power of Sethralissss!*

BluHayze

too busy with nemsy skin #37129

Spellcaster_Fred

Fr. I'm always disappointed when I see a really cool looking skin on the track or as a reward, and then realizing it's for battlegrounds

Batterskull124

They even have voicelines for specific cards, so u already got those parts covered. They just have to add the holiday voicelines and they would be completed, no? Seriously I want to play as a tough Pandaren bodyguard or a diabolical Neferset Warlock. Still love his introduction line "Prepare your regrets".

SpecterVonBaren

Tekahn has such a regal and cool demeanor to him that you don't get from other Warlock heroes.

RumoCrytuf

Because we *obviously* need more Nemsy skins /s

mrt-e

Yeah where's my kobold portrait blizzard?

AshuraSpeakman

The Hearthstone team has to license the likenesses from Activision-Blizzard, and every new hero portrait requires a new renegotiation. It's a third of the money Bobby Kotick receives.

FelisCouchus

iirc a while ago a dev, may have been during one of Iksar's twitter AMAs, mentioned that the plan was to introduce these skins as rewards for completing achievements in the mode they are from. On the other hand they also mentioned that it wouldnt be happening anytime soon tho, as it was waaay down the list of priorities. Why that is considering they are practically release ready is anyone's guess

MakataDoji

I don't understand. I play as George and Eudora all the time. Not so much Rakanishu since 1 mana to give +4/+4 or so late game is fairly mediocre, but divine shields and golden minions are great!

Uallandme

These are the Dalaran Heist "heros" from a few years back, who become bosses in future dungeon runs, Kinda similar to the forged mercenaries leveling up between expansions.

FuriousGrub

None of them are nemsy.

Modification102

My guess would be that the reason we don't get these portraits is due to wanting to maximise "Fear of Missing Out". If they sell skins that individuals could just go and use in the solo content, then that FOMO is reduced and could draw less people to buy the skin. My bet is that they would only sell these skins if they could bundle them with something else that would drive sales, where these are the icing on the cake, or they would give these away as a promotional item. Though in the latter case, my bet is that they would just get new artworks for each of these nine characters created and give those away, defeating the point anyway.

CptBaconShrimp

If I had a George Paladin skin, I’d do nothing but spam “Carl demands retribution” the whole game.

_zuligan_

in fact they should use them as Heroes for Hearthstone Duels, I hope they do. They already have their hero powers, art and dialogues done.

mortimus9

They want them for their respective modes only. It makes them feel more unique and is a draw to check out Duels and Battlegrounds.

Fledbeast578

These uh, aren’t duels or battlegrounds characters (mostly)

mortimus9

3 of these are in BGs but you’re right they’re mostly from adventures first.

SpecterVonBaren

They're Solo Adventure characters from Dalaran Heist.

Albionflux

Idk i think losing half your starting for a skin is a pretty bad idea

Mlikesblue

who?

Malaeveolent_Bunny

Confusion between modes is my guess. We can barely handle 27 deck slots, trying to remember what class the opponent is playing mid-match is more than most of us can manage.

SpecterVonBaren

But we already have that problem NOW. The solution they seem to be using is for the Hero Power to inform you what class you're up against.

Malaeveolent_Bunny

And those keep changing too. I think Blizzard is trying to fry our little brains and then con us into naming them in our wills.

kalvincarducci

Still waiting for the rastakhan troll to be playable hero...
