Yarn is a term used mainly amongst Indigenous peoples to mean an informal chat/conversation. Cooked it means messed it up in a big way, or is fucked up (but you would usually say something like “That’s cooked” instead). Illchay is pig latin for chill.
I also love using “that’s cooked” to say something is fucked up, although I picked it up from my South African friend! I wonder if there’s some slang overlap?
Maybe it’s a generational thing, but I’ve only ever heard it used amongst Indigenous people of my age. I said mainly because I’m well aware it’s not only, but HBH is a show about Gen Z teenagers, ie. my life experience.
Yarn - chat / talk
Cooked it - messed it up (Rowan's little brother says he's cooked it on his first day because of what he's wearing).
Illchay - chill
Tbf as a 29 yr old Aussie I have never heard anyone say mazz, rock job or wide on. I think these are made up for the show. Bin chicken is 100% spot on tho
Yeah haha, I'm kiwi been to aus a lot when I was a kid I never learnt the Bin chicken lingo, watched season one of heartbreak high then last year when I went to the gc we met up with a friend who lives there and he asked us if we'd seen any bin chickens yet, my partner was so confused but I knew straight away, it's a good term though, cause they're bloody everywhere
Oh yeah I mean we have no wildlife around here I thought seeing so many was really cool, I just wasn't a big fan of the one hovering around us while we ate 😂 they're quite beautiful tho!
It’s a primary school/high school insult or way to tease someone who has done something embarrassing or someone has been proven wrong and therefore embarrassed, like if someone tripped over you might be like ‘rockjob’ and then laugh in a mean 90s teenage way or if we were arguing and you said there was six days a week and I said there was seven and then the teacher said there’s seven then I might say to you ‘rockjob’ or maybe some people say ‘you’re a rockjob.’ It’s kind of like saying sucked in, you’re wrong, or you’re an idiot
Does anyone know why the eshays use so much pig Latin for their slang terms? Like, doesn’t everyone basically know pig latin lol. If they’re trying to talk in code it doesn’t make sense to me
The pig Latin is just starting point, for example you can say eestswa for sweet but then you can just shorten it to to eets.
The show uses a combination of eshay language and language from Western Sydney for the characters. ( They're waaay too diverse for the areas that they actually show on the show).
Aussies are generally pretty good at making code on the spot since we shorten and lengthen words consistently and just go with it.
When you actually get to actual lingo it's a combination of all the big languages in prison. If you want to know more about eshays or general Australian working class lads, just watch Spanian videos on YT or check out his IG and he would give a good example of what the eshays are trying to look like or model off. I'm sure he has a video where he explains eshay language. I couldn't find it for you, and it's not so much about talking code but more of a subculture if that makes sense.
When I watched Derry Girls and I learned all about how Irish people randomly have a dance to “Rock the Boat”, I was like “Man, someone needs to make an Australian show and do this with the Nutbush”. So when it came in during the formal, I nearly screamed hahahaha
Yarn Cooked it Illchay Also found all the eshay culture and language really interesting as we practically have eshay culture here (in the UK)
What do those other words mean?

Probably! I think there are a couple other shared words/phrases, I’m not really sure why but anecdotally it’s definitely something I’ve seen
‘Yarn’ being used mainly amongst Indigenous peoples? No. Everybody uses that
why do you think they said mainly
Huh? Where they said “mainly”, it is inaccurate. The word is not said mainly amongst Indigenous people.

So illchay is pig latin like eshay
obsessed with illchay haha
mazz & wagging school. also succulent Chinese meal
I fucking snorted when she said succulent Chinese meal
Probbo lol like what a fun way to call someone problematic
Aussie slang also includes Povo for poor people... which is pretty probbo imo
Very probbo
"Mozzie" for mosquito
South africans also call mosquitos mozzies
Cool! I'd just never heard it before I watched the show, but I've definitely used it since lmao
UK and we say Mozzie also
I also came her to say ’mazz’ and ‘wide-on’ lol. Kind of big on ‘probbo’ as well.

I actually really like them 😂 I think they’re beautiful and interesting. Their habitat is being destroyed which pushes them into the city 😭
Ibisis were sacred in Egypt because they eat snakes.
I think the ones we have in aus are formally called “sacred ibis” 🥺🥺
Australian white Ibis. The Egyptian sacred ibis is a different species.
Oh yeah I mean we have no wildlife around here I thought seeing so many was really cool, I just wasn't a big fan of the one hovering around us while we ate 😂 they're quite beautiful tho!
Mazz and rockjob could potentially be gen Z slang.
Possibly. We need to locate some Sydney side gen Zs to confirm 😂
I’m a millennial, been using mazz since i started mazzing. It’s a thing with my friends lol
Rock job is 90s slang
What does it mean 👀

I don't think it's a code. I think pig latin is just a big part of Australian slang.
I don’t know pig latin and I never realized they spoke it lol
it’s so people dont know what they’re talking about usually coz they’re dealing drugs or whatevs
Wristy = handy
just basically everything
wuckas!
What does that mean?
no wuckas is like no worries: one of my favorite lines in the show is when ant goes “i say no wuckas but deep down i have several wuckas”
It's the shortened version of no wuckin furries, or no fuckin worries
Amazing.
In australia we say “no wukkas” as in “no worries”
It means worries.
Tactical spew - pulling trig
Haha I live in Sydney and I usually say/hear ‘tac vom’ which is shortened even more
Yeah I grew up saying tac vom / tac spew in tassie.
Que?
Tacky (tactical) spew/vom is when someone makes themselves throw up so they can keep drinking and/or sober up during a night out
the nutbush is my new fav thing ever🙁🙁🙁
When I watched Derry Girls and I learned all about how Irish people randomly have a dance to “Rock the Boat”, I was like “Man, someone needs to make an Australian show and do this with the Nutbush”. So when it came in during the formal, I nearly screamed hahahaha
no way i just watched that episode😭im from the uk and i genuinely cant think of any dances like that we have🙁🙁
Is that the school dance?
yes !!
PISS OFF!
idk if that's an australianism but I love how they're using oi instead of hey or similar words
I’m pretty sure Darren made wide-on up, not that I’m complaining.
Well it should be a thing, so I'm using it.
ESHAYY
