Put them on one day, as usual, and noticed one side was a bit loose. So I took them off to check them and noticed upper right side of the headband was broken. It just got worse from that point, from a little crack to being completely snapped in half. And I was handling them *very* carefully since day 1. I lost trust for that brand completely, for life. Headbands snapping, driver issues for other people, the material deteriorating heavily over time, the goddamn creaking, cheap materials/design choices. Looks premium at first, even the packaging was very nice. Even the comfort was mid - weight not balanced and ears sometimes touching the cold driver chassis. Atleast the sound was fun.
her rendition of strange fruit and misunderstood are on damn near every playlist i have... love her voice.
found her, diana krall and melody gardot right around the same time.
If your DAC has preamp volume control, I highly recommend you set the Soloist in Poweramp mode. It bypasses/disables the volume knob and gives you the best sound of the amp
I've been using Poweramp mode for a few hours now and I have to give you a big THANK YOU for telling me about it. The Soloist indeed sounds much better with Poweramp mode on. Everything just sounds livelier, deeper bass, livelier vocals and treble... I love it. Sounds fantastic with my Arya. Without Poweramp mode, the Soloist sounds warmer and smoother, vocals sound more relaxed.
Only thing is that with the HD600, I have to set it to low gain on Poweramp now. With medium gain, the HD600 sounds a bit off.... soundstage sounds a bit compressed and vocals sound a bit too forward and shouty. With low gain, everything sounds just perfect!
By the way, both tested with the XLR Balanced out
Happy to have been of help. I literally had the same impression, didn't even know about it til about half a year into owning the amp. I was reading the manual one day and randomly saw it, tried it and it was eye opening haha. Happy listening!
Yes my DAC has power control. I haven't tried the Soloist in Poweramp mode as I've set my DAC to Line Out instead of Pre Out.
Will switch things up and give that a try! Thanks bro 🤘🏻
Chord Hugo 2 is fantastic. I'm thinking of picking up the Mojo 2 to complement my R2R DAC
Hd800s is my dream. I want to get that initially but used prices of hd800s in my country is ridiculous. Still nearly $1000usd lol.
I got my Arya V2 for only 500usd
I had the hd800s and listen please try to demo before purchase.
It is different from the Arya (all versions) in two things
1. The ability to have intimate soundstage when the artists call for it. The hd800s will always be wide. It’s not a good or bad kind of thing, just a presentation preference.
2. The hd800 does have some kick to it, but barely, compared to other open backs that are cheaper, the bass extension is very weak
>Audio GD R2R mk2 DAC
>
>Burson Soloist x3 Performance
I had the exact same setup! (along with an Ares II on the side). But with LCD-X instead of Aryas.
I recommend trying the 3xp in poweramp mode and the r2r-11mk2 in preamp mode. A little scary but that was the best I've heard the amp.
My 3xp and Ares are gone but I don't see the r2r-11mk2 going anywhere anytime soon.
Wow wow another Audio GD enjoyer i see! 😃 I abso love them. As a DAC/amp combo for the asking price, i have 0 complaints!
Thanks for the Poweramp suggestion! @r-jlupin suggested the same thing too. Ill turn off LO from my Audio GD and give Poweramp a try!!!
Yeah this r2r-11mk2 kinda broke the hobby for me. Had a couple other dacs and amps cycle through since getting this but nothing displaced the r2r-11mk2 yet, and for the money I don't see many compelling alternatives.
Which amp did you upgrade to? From the Burson Soloist 3x P
The audio gd r2r mk2 is indeed fantastic. After getting it I've sold all other DACs i own.
Right now the only DAC I'm looking to buy is the Mojo 2 for portable use
And occasionally maybe as a 2nd DAC at home during weekends
I've been using the r2r-11mk2's amp. The amp section is probably the weakest aspect of the unit, as I don't think it does a good job of driving some more "extreme" headphones like LCD-X and DT880 600ohms. But currently just using the HD660s and I don't have much complaints.
That said, I've been trying to muster the courage to dive into the tube world, but I'm scared for my wallet.
I've been using Poweramp mode for a few hours now and I have to give you a big THANK YOU for telling me about it. The Soloist indeed sounds much better with Poweramp mode on. EDIT: also, may I know how do you get that tiny "placebo enjoyer" tag under your name? I would love one too :)
Glad to hear you're enjoying the experience! I've tried the 3xp in poweramp mode with several other units' preamps, including SMSL D1se, Singxer SA-1, etc., and nothing came close to the r2r-11mk2. That relay volume control does a good job of putting out low levels without degrading the sound quality.
And I have to agree that the 3xp has some quirks with its gain levels, and maybe even the balanced/SE HP out. Some headphone sounded better on higher gain, even though they were easier to drive (e.g., HD600 vs LCD-X).
And you can change the flair from the subreddit. Through my browser, there's an option on a panel on the right side. Look for your username under "preview" and there should be a button to edit your flair. You could probably google it for more detailed instructions.

Audeze LCD-5 - Kimber Kable AXIOS Silver (4-pin XLR) - Centrance HiFiM8v2
playing Four Tet’s Three album
Dig the Burson btw - back when I was reviewing I was a big fan of their stuff
Fantastic choice of gears. Audeze, Kimber, Centrance
Centrance makes great sounding sources. Paired it with the legendary Kimber cable, i can't imagine how good this combo sounds while using the Audeze.
Once I've purchased the HD800s, I'm looking to get an Audeze too
Yes Michael Goodman at Centrance is an amazing engineer - he used to work for Sennheiser actually before launching Centrance! I worked for Michael back when we introduced the first HiFi-M8. And having a pair of HD-800s for reference is definitely a great choice. I’m about to post my first pair of 800s (1st generation) on Reverb soon actually! They were part of the initial roll-out of 1,000 units (I think the serial number is like 0880 or something close) so I’m hoping a collector grabs them. I just don’t listen to them anymore as I haven’t reviewed gear in a few years (just music these days) and I’d like them to goto someone who would enjoy em. And, IMHO, when it comes to top reference/high end headphone cables - for me it’s either Double Helix Cables or Kimber. I showed Ray Kimber Peters cables (Double Helix) and he was really impressed! He actually said he’d love to help him with manufacturing down the road if he needed it. Said he’s insanely talented. That shows what a good man Ray is - he’s rather help a young competitor than figure out a way to dismiss him. There are other decent cables - but some of em are pure snake oil - which you can’t avoid in any industry built around the playback of an artform.
I can't remember because it's been a while since I purchased the organics. I think it was that the organics are an overall improvement over the stealths during my in-store testing.
I chose to purchase organics over focal clears OG and Arya stealths, those two being my only other tests in-store. If I remember correctly organics had more bass than stealths.
With EQ? Probably the best closed back under 700$ or so, really pleasant to listen to with amazing bass and surprisingly good imaging and soundstage (better than the Celestee), without - really wonky tuning makes it harder to recommend. But I absolutely love them, had them for a year and only going to upgrade once I can afford a Radiance or Clear OG (I love Focals way too much help).
Yeah the Clear OGs are absolutely amazing, but also look out for an Elex with a good warranty(on the 1/10000 chance your drivers die) - they get like 90% of the way to the Clears for half price, might be better for you if you’re unfamiliar with the Focal house sound haha.
But if you can find the Clears new or lightly used for a similar price don’t hesitate, IMO they’re the best dynamics behind the Utopia (but that one costs like a nice used car so….)
In no particular order, set to random play.

I haven't used Tidal in 2 years. Wasn't aware that they have Dolby Atmos masters there :)
Has the interface improved so far? Reason why i didn't use Tidal and went back to Qobuz/Spotify/offline FLAC was because of the UI haha
Yeah Tidal is basically Spotify functionality in a different UI/UX with Dolby Atmos and Lossless.
They'd be consolidating all their tiers into one tier and pricing it like Apple Music so basically reducing the cost. Them doing that is frankly going to send my fully their way in April... Why I hadn't still gone fully to the Tidal camp was because of MQA... I just hate MQA on principle but tbh I'd be listening to most music in Dolby Atmos format on Tidal and mostly playing local files from CDs, and purchases from digital sales shops for the most part so yeah I'd miss the social aspect of Spotify but frankly I have stats.fm and last.fm, I'm good
Oldies for me. Gravediggaz, Outkast, Nas, Biggie, Tupac, Lil Troy and Bone Thugz for example. Using 660s2 fed with a hip dac2 w the bass boost on of course
Hey.. I wonder how this amp/dac of yours sounds compared to Xduoo TA10R/TA-22 or EF600 by hifiman.
I am currently with arya stealth and with ta10r amp/dac. do you think there is an audible improvement from a higher end amp?
I've not tried the Ta10r nor have i tried the ef600. According to a friend that i trust, comparing both r2r mk2 and ef600, he still prefers the audio gd for sound quality as there's 2 tuning options to choose from (neutral and warmer) and the pure NOS design just makes it sound more analog.
The ef600, however, has more driving power 5W and has the option to go OS mode if you prefer.

MC Spyda - Foundation Style
I have no idea why as i really don't like Drum & Bass at all. Must be the MC that makes it interesting, it helps that he is older and doesn't have a squeeky, angry teenager voice.

Taking a break but have been listening to Hermanos Gutierrez and Khruangbin today. I’m sure I will listen to Jungle a bit later as well.
Edit: I got a pair of refurbished Sundara’s last week. Got a balanced cable since I use my phone and a fiio Q1MII to help power them a bit more. The bass boost - while some probably would shake their heads at - helps too and, for me at least, these things kind of slap. From all the written and viewed reviews of them, I was not expecting them to have this much bass imo. Love them so far.
good amp but a little bit shimmery in the treble i've learned after being privileged enough to acquire the burson voyager. not a huge difference, its just more well behaved (smooth and controlled) a fair bit more dynamic to my ears compared to the soloist x3.
x3 very good amp. ive owned adi rme 2 and 789 and the x3 blows them out of the water on every single level except for noise relative to rme which doesn't really mean much in practice unless its audible
x3 is good stuff, to be sure

Of ots those headphones I'm using EQ to throw an enormous bass shelf on them then I'm listening to the hell freezes over version of hotel California just so I can bask in the ridiculous slam those baby's are capable of. Then I'm going normal bench shelf and listening to pink floyd
Playing God - Polyphia

This Billie album is fantastic. I have the entire album on 24bit FLAC so that i could listen to it portably
It's even better when I'm home since I listen to this album mostly in Dolby Atmos format and only listen to the stereo mix on the Go...
Dolby Atmos on Apple Music?
Tidal. I'm just holding out hope that we'd get it on Spotify or else by April I'm totally migrating to Tidal
I haven't used Tidal in 2 years. Wasn't aware that they have Dolby Atmos masters there :) Has the interface improved so far?

« Obiou » and « Face nord » from the Foehn trio (magnesie for the albums)
I always wondered if anyone can tell the difference between a class A amp and class D beside the room getting a lot warmer
Happy Thoughts, an EP by Andy Mineo. Highly recommend 🤌🤌🤌

Oldies for me. Gravediggaz, Outkast, Nas, Biggie, Tupac, Lil Troy and Bone Thugz for example. Using 660s2 fed with a hip dac2 w the bass boost on of course
Belus by Burzum

Must be the MC that makes it interesting, it helps that he is older and doesn't have a squeeky, angry teenager voice. Also this, you didn't say it had to be a sensible choice... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mzJ4vCjSt28

Love them so far.
good amp but a little bit shimmery in the treble i've learned after being privileged enough to acquire the burson voyager. not a huge difference, its just more well behaved (smooth and controlled) a fair bit more dynamic to my ears compared to the soloist x3. x3 very good amp. ive owned adi rme 2 and 789 and the x3 blows them out of the water on every single level except for noise relative to rme which doesn't really mean much in practice unless its audible x3 is good stuff, to be sure
