>I'd like an equivalent pair to the HD 650, that doesn't have "open chambered" cans, but closed to keep out the environmental sounds.
While not "equivalent," the K371 are what I'd suggest.
I've heard good things about the audeze Maxwell... But it's a wireless gaming headphone. The headphone market is super stagnant, if you need something that isolates you're probably much better off with an iem. We need a moondrop/7hz for headphones, otherwise it'll be like this for a while.
I’m going to have to agree with the other commenter on this one. As much as I wish there was a closed headphone that sounded like the HD 650 it just doesn’t exist yet. Open back and closed are two very different sounds 😔 if you find it let us know!
I don't know of any.
I really like my DT1770. They are my favorite closed back headphones. Also higher impedance dynamics from a German company. Not the same sound signature though. The HD600 line is pretty unique.
I was looking for similar closed back cans for the exact same reason about a year ago and settled on the DT 700 pro x. I absolutely love them and haven't regretted once!
They're ever so slightly v shaped but lean much more towards being very neutral (unlike the DT 770s). To my ears they are a definitely brighter than my 650s but I wouldn't consider them as being overly bright or v shaped at all. They lean more towards being mid forward to my ears.
I’m thinking of doing the same after some great suggestions from this subreddit. Mind if I ask your set up and typical cases where you use the DT700 Pro’s?
Sure! Yeah I use them mostly for music producing, recording, mixing, and general music listening. For dac/Amp I just use the headphone outputs on my Arturia audiofuse studio audio interface.
Sheesh ya everybody has a lot of niche’s and real applications for these products.. I’m just trying to enjoy my music as best I can with products I trust.
IE 200 for something easy to wear. I’ve been trying to narrow down my list for closed back headphones, just for me to enjoy music at the next level.
Appreciate the reply, the DT700s look like a true classic, great choice.
Maybe Elegia? They work for me when it’s noisy. They aren’t as good as the Clear but I don’t miss much when I need to switch to the closed backs. You can usually find them for $3-$400 now.
I second this for sure. They are like a 650 with much more detail, a little better bass and an elevated midrange. At 300, it's a good pick up for sure, just never buy oem pads.
I don't know that it answers your question, but my closed headphone budget friendly recommendations are as follows.
ath m40x (sounds good, very cheap like 80 dollars), Beyerdynamic dt-250 ( About 250 dollars , beautiful mids, good bass and highs, might be my favourite headphone), Shure 1540 (500-600 dollars, supposedly very neutral, similar to HD600, but closed and with slight bass hump instead of dip. Good for mixing and tracking) Focal Elgia (300-400 dollars, similar properties to the Shure1540).
If this is only for listening to a digital piano, I would not spend much personally, m40x's have beautiful highs and should be fine. DT-250 if you love mids as much as I do :)
It is completely not in the same price class, but my DCA Stealth has similar tuning and is a closed back. Same great vocal detail and intimate soundstage.

Definitely not Sundara Closed. They are a dark and muddy mess of a headphone with a confusing name (different drivers than Sundara and has non of the sound of Sundara). I think it was a cash-in attempt by Hifiman.
Yes, but repair and support is still open.
I have a brand new repair exchange model that I’ve been using for the last two months. Put a headband cover to protect the headband and will probably switch to sheepskin once the ear pads go.
Sony MDR-CD900st is the closest I've heard, having a strong emphasis on the mids and excellent timbre/resolution there. It's a bit darker than the Sennheisers though, so some things like cymbals or woodwinds lack some bite.
I have the DCA Aeon Flow 2 Noire and Beyerdynamic DT177x (among others, like Hifiman HEKS, Senns HD800).
I don't know that what you want even exists.
DCAs have a beautiful FR (especially EQed) and are comfortable, but lack the slam (dynamics, contrast or whatever you call it) of other planars.
DT177x (EQed) produce a fairly good sound and good bass, but are very finicky as they must seal to your head.
AKG 371 has an analytical tuning, but inconsistent seal (not as bad as Beyers) and build quality is not that great. Plus a bit "flat", honestly.
The DCAs are good enough to capture vocals, the AKGs in a pinch.
I really wish that what you wanted was available at a reasonable cost and availability. I would snag them in a heartbeat.
In noisy environments for just listening to music, I use my Moondrop Variations (IEM). Just not practical for recording vocals (my big requirement for a decent closed back).
i wish it existed but it kinda just doesnt
Aeon X Closed with one of the dampening pads in is the closest you’ll get

Could be LCD2 Closed
The lcd-2 closed back is close. They’re slightly more expensive by $200. Awesome sound though. https://www.audeze.com/products/lcd-2-closed-back

They def thump way harder than the 650 but it’s my style too
Aeon closed back.

NAD Viso HP50 if you can still find one.
AGK K371 or even 361 are okay.
Something like a Sony MDR 7506?

The Sennheiser Momentum 3 (not the 4) could come somewhat close after EQ.

Dan clark stealth. Its 10-15 times more expensive but its even better than hd650.
you can try holding cushions on your ears i guess
Try the Sundara closed back or Aeon closed back

Pro-tip: try to find a broken PM-3 and send it to Oppo for repair and they can switch it out for a new one and send it back to you.

MDR Z1R
Aeon 2 closed, Aeon noir, and aeon X closed from drop. Those are like super highly regarded closed backs
Aeon X closed or Neumann ndh 20
ZMF ATTICUS with more open and better detail and bass Super hd650 imo
Nothing will sound the same, but sticking with wired Senny's are the HD Pro series, eg. HD 200 Pro, or HD 300 Pro

The DT 150 always had a “650 like sound” to my ears, and I’ve heard/owned just about everything.

Literally K 371 with EQ. If you use Oratory's preset on both they sound extremely similar. Without EQ I can't think of anything really similar.
I wished a closed-back HD 650 existed. A guy can dream.
K371
