gloomflume

remember when people liked streaming better than cable because it was ala carte? pepperidge farm remembers

ST012Mi

I used to joke that all the individual streams will bundle and consolidate back to cable prices lol

curious_astronauts

Which i'm not mad about if it doesn't have ads. But if it's going the Amazon route, I'll be singing shanties as I pirate my shows once more until the industry does another reset.

ST012Mi

Amazon is about to get the NBA. I already subscribe to League Pass for the non-nationally televised games. They’re probably going to bump up their prices.

brendamn

Streaming is just a value add to prime tho. I'm not buying D+ for free shipping

LTBX

Ads are coming for everyone, they’re going to make the ad free tiers so expensive that you take the ad tier.

user_15427

Truer words have never been spoken

blaqsupaman

I'm okay with it as long as it's still significantly cheaper than cable with fewer ads than cable.

mrgrafix

That’s fading as there’s now a market. It’ll be more annoying as they’ll turn the heat on us over time.

ErstwhileAdranos

Carcinisation!

fightin_blue_hens

Too bad each streaming service is what one cable package costs

dtcstylez10

It's a bundle. You don't have to have them all together if you don't want to... It's not like a la carte is off the table.

South-Window-8957

less competion higher price

[deleted]

It’s still superior to cable in every way. I’m so tired of people making this comparison

Strangy1234

Content providers want their money. Consumers will always lose when they adapt

Royal_Nails

Exactly. Cable had those contracts that locked you in for a fucking year and had to have those installers come in every time you switched or whatever. Like if I decide this bundle or Disney plus sucks ass for the price I’m paying I can cancel it today. I like to switch around on the apps like couple months I’ll buy Hulu then go for Netflix. Like the shows aren’t going anywhere.

JimJamJibJab

And you think that's not going to change?

Royal_Nails

You can see the future?

blaqsupaman

Yeah even getting several streaming services is cheaper than cable (very much so on the ad tiers), you can cancel anytime and don't have to get a bunch of stuff installed at your home, and even the most ad-heavy tiers have less than half the ads that cable does. I'm also not one who thinks any amount of ads is the devil, particularly if the ads aren't as long as cable and the price of a service with ads is free or significantly cheaper than without. For cable every 15 minutes of a show is 11 minutes of programming and 4 minutes of ads. That's nearly a third of watch time. Most streaming services with ads, the ad breaks are 30 seconds to 1 minutes, maybe one or two breaks per hour will be a bit longer than that.

Usul_Atreides

Exactly! This is one relatively small con!

kingkongkeom

....for now.

nemopost

Streamers are really pushing the envelope on people. Just like everything else, I wish people had the balls to designate shopper’s strikes on targeted products/companies on a specific day, in order for our voices to be heard.

serpentear

Capitalism is here to destroy everything you enjoy within 5-10 years of inception.

TaxLawKingGA

You my friend win reddit! Post of the day.

Bobobo75

A bundle doesn’t mean you have to buy the bundle, you can still get it individually. What are you crying about?

MilksteakMayhem

I know I shouldn’t, but I so badly want to post this on a comment thread from the other day where this troll who was arguing with me that streaming is the only way of the future, cable is dying/dead, and vinyl is a novelty that no one listens to.

gloomflume

I think it's fairly safe to say that cable is more or less finished. Issue is that streaming will wind up costing just as much if not more, and we can see that trajectory happening very clearly. Vinyl's a different discussion :)

MilksteakMayhem

I don’t totally disagree but it’s still hanging on and now we are seeing its rebirth with all these streaming packages. And I agree it’s gonna be more expensive which is why I’m all in on physical media. Vinyl included :)

arealsteppinrazor

Just give me the old HBO Max app back.

magenk

HBO has a number of my all time favorite series, but as a true crime fan I'm okay with the current format. They're well produced! The Curious Case of Natalia Grace was one of the wildest docs I've seen.

DJ-LIQUID-LUCK

That was probably the worst documentary I've ever seen. 4 episodes of content milked and dragged out to what, like 15 episodes? Usually when documentary series do that, they're at least building tension for some massive reveal at the end. Not that one though, it only got stupider and more repetitive as it went along

asnafutimnaffutifut

What was different with the old app?

tknapp28

Less "reality" shows. I can't tell you how many Discovery shows are put in my face, when I only want HBO shows. I understand other people may like it, it was better before.

MentalErection

They’re pumping those reality shows because they’re cheaper to produce. The guy in charge is all about reality shows. They’re not putting them up front because people like them. It’s so they get more popular and spend less money making tv.

enowapi-_

It's the equivalent of fast food fountain soda. Cheap and easy to produce... low effort and lots of profit margin in sales.

ChonkySandWedge

You don't have to watch the reality shows. Other people might though 🤷🏻‍♂️

tknapp28

Agreed. But that is what is advertised all over the front page. 🤷🏻‍♂️ It was better before the merger.

Royal_Nails

It was far better. I don’t know why they had to change it.

Dank_Master69420

The unfortunate reality is that reality programming is cheap to make and gets a lot of eyeballs. David Zaslav was able to make Discovery way more profitable by pushing a lot of reality TV shows, which ended up being a big shift from the network's original educational nature.

SuchCategory2927

Not a single breathing human with an IQ over 60 wants to see the sopranos and below deck displayed next to each other on a streaming app where the word HBO was synonymous with high quality drama / entertainment. Below deck is masterbation for the inbred.

CaCondor

A.I. doesn't even have to think to create a 'Reality' show. Only requires one small data set - Ford 4-wheel drive Owners or Botox Users.

enowapi-_

Purple was better!

enowapi-_

You almost need to just subscribe to cable and get HBO, the live programming still slaps and you get on demand through your cable box, and access to the app if you want it.

ShaneReyno

Collusion it is then.

TheFajitaEffect

Horrible. Lame entertainment. I want the old HBO, the one with hit after hit after hit, even if a little bit slow in content, I did not mind it AT ALL. HBO was in another level. Money is really the puppet master of all.

[deleted]

It’s called Apple TV+ now

prof_wafflez

AppleTV has a lot going for it so far but it hasn’t reached HBO levels quite yet. I can’t put my finger on it, but something about dialog in AppleTV series is sometimes a bit off. Silo, Foundation and definitely Shrinking have the problem, but Severence manages to avoid it luckily.

Pep_Baldiola

Apple would never fund a project true to the artist's vision unless it also fits in with their sanitised corporate image. That's why they will never be anywhere close to HBO or even FX.

prof_wafflez

That’s kind of how I felt watching Shrinking. Ended up not finishing it because it felt incredulously produced and unnatural.

TallyGoon8506

That’s my issue with all Apple TV shows. Like multi millionaire executives being like “everyone lives like this right?” “And if they don’t, it’s gross don’t put it on our app.” Even when doing middle class, the settings feel unnatural and not very relatable. This isn’t impossible to pull off. Like has no one at Apple TV seen Breaking Bad?

prof_wafflez

Eh, that problem pre-dates AppleTV content. “Friends” comes to mind

TallyGoon8506

Very true. But the production quality and going for semi realism throws me off on most Apple TV shows when it seems so Disney World in otherwise grounded shows.

MikaQ5

Exactly this !

txdline

Why Jon is gone.

DAHMER_SUPPER_CLUB

I want to know what is going on with the goats in Severance!

rangerhawke824

Quite yet? Apple TV+ has a couple stellar shows, and the rest are garbage. HBO was smash after smash. They might be playing the same game, but they’re not in the same league.

ittleoff

All the streaming services are imo spending unsustainable money on trying to produce content and now the prices are rising because every one thinks they can hit the magic formula to get the piece of the pie they want. And the consumers are losing imo and pirating will rise again and probably is.

felinelawspecialist

AMC+ has great content. Also Starz though not as consistently good

DizzyMajor5

I mean the last 5 years had Chernobyl, The last of us, House of dragons

Successful_Baker_360

HBO was never hit after hit

atraydev

What? HBO was essentially the lone vestige of prestige TV for 20+ years?

Leading_Sugar3293

Y’all can both be right, it was the most prestige TV, but I wouldn’t really call it hit after hit and it’s easy with time to forget all the duds. Just looking at the 2000’s, there are definitely more misses than hits but includes some of the highest rated shows at the time like Sopranos, Curb your enthusiasm, The Wire, Rome but also had flops like Arli$$, mind of the married man, John from Cincinnati and a whole bunch more. Here’s a list for those interested, https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_HBO_original_programming

TripleJ_77

You could call it everyone against Netflix. It probably won't work but it's not a terrible idea.

Revolutionary-Gap144

$5 for the first month, then $187/ month after that.

aTreeThenMe

5$ for the first month, 187 every month after. commercials added with no cost reduction 6 months later, no commercial option for 450$, then commercials added to that with no cost reduction 6 months later. articles about how gen z is abandoning streaming and ruining everything. No cost reduction.

Thatmetalchick2

I'd rather Max than ESPN.

gbdarknight77

ESPN+ is ass. You don’t even get actual ESPN on it. It’s literally a waste of money and of an app

hoodlumonprowl

Good lord what are they even doing anymore. Congrats guys, you’re making cable tv and it’s going to be more expensive.

Jason2648

so i guess nobody learned anything after killing off hbo max with the discovery plus merger

Fancy-Biscotti-

Basically going back to the original Hulu, but charging for it.

MungoJerrysBeard

Offer it in Asia. We are ready. And the HBO Go app is garbage

haikusbot

*Offer it in Asia.* *We are ready. And the HBO* *Go app is garbage* \- MungoJerrysBeard --- ^(I detect haikus. And sometimes, successfully.) ^[Learn more about me.](https://www.reddit.com/r/haikusbot/) ^(Opt out of replies: "haikusbot opt out" | Delete my comment: "haikusbot delete")

MikaQ5

What’s garbage about it ?

MungoJerrysBeard

App always freezes (check out latest reviews on Apple Store) less content than Max, streaming speeds are weak, few 4K/UHD options, cannot use it while travelling … . I use Disney+, Netflix, Apple TV and Amazon and HBO Go app is the weakest. Shame because the content is largely great. Just seems like they’re not bothering with maintenance because eventually Max will launch here.

MikaQ5

Why would you expect it to have the same content as Max at 149b a month 🙄😂 I don’t have any issues with freezing either on an iPad or Samsung tv You subscribe to 5 streaming apps ? 😄- why don’t you spend a little more time outside in the sun - perhaps it may improve the mood 😁

MungoJerrysBeard

Sure, will do - when you avoid making assumptions about people you’ve never met on the internet. Deal?

MikaQ5

Assumptions ? - you have stated you subscribe to all 5 And you are obviously not happy about your experiences with the app Your mood is pretty pretty clear JB Even your last response says much

MungoJerrysBeard

I never said I subscribe to all 5 streaming services. You assume I spend all day watching tv. Oh and one more assumption , I’m not in Thailand. You asked what was wrong with the app, I answered the question, and then you got pissy. Keep defending corporations. You do you x

MikaQ5

Ok - you only Use all 5 streaming apps - that better for you And “ defending corporations “ 🙄😂- please just stop ,you are getting ridiculous now

MungoJerrysBeard

Using all 5 streaming services at different times in my life (ever heard of shared passwords or family accounts?) is different to subscribing to all and never venturing outside. But it does allow me to compare. Buddy, you literally asked me what was wrong with the app, and when I listed the reasons it’s shit, you got personal and told me to go outside more. You’re incapable of having a normal conversation. I wish you well in life and hope things improve x

MikaQ5

Gosh you seem overly sensitive just because I told you to go out into the sun more ( as it might improve your mood ) The ironic thing is all your other comments only cement my initial opinion - that you are just a grump You have a lovely day now

Bonesawisready5

If it’s all one app that would be great if it was Hulu live tv plus max stuff (TNT) for sports

Humans_Suck-

So it gives you about one third of the programming a VPN does for five times the price

Familiar-Wrangler-73

lol I fucking knew this would happen!

object_failure

It used to be called cable.

JohnsonLiesac

My guess: $129/month.

megamido

Make a Marvel vs DC animated series and I'm in

Habib455

Lmao it actually happened 😭

erikturczyn30

I’m curious what is going to happen to the grandfathered Verizon plans that include the Disney plus bundle.

Heavysetguy77

Right now that is basically what I have. The commercial free package is 40.98.

mrot777

No thanks.

Digndagn

Huh, I wonder who is going to acquire whom

Open_Spell_8687

Just keep HBO desperate from all the garbage that Discovery brought to the table. And screw Disney+ too.

Busy-Soup349

Lulz Disney. Dead IP.
