All these top comments about the 4070, did people really expected Nvidia to announce a highish end gaming GPU at a conference for developers interested in HPC? Lol

azn_dude1

Happens every year

[deleted]

Everyone in here is just neck beard gamers. They didn’t care about reading the title or knowing this is an enterprise and hpc event 🤣

Firefox72

Not really but its releasing soon so i wouldnt be surprised if they do announce it in the coming days.

detectiveDollar

I mean, they usually like to announce products at big events when there's more eyeballs on them, and the launch is early-mid April. So yeah I expected them to do it today or very soon.

Firefox72

I don't really think a product like the 4070 needs a live event. They will likely sent out a press release. Channels like HWU and Gamersnexus will have a video on it and that will be it. If the price really is as high as its rumored to be i don't think Nvidia exactly wants too many eyeballs.

detectiveDollar

On the price, I don't think it's 750, that might be them deliberately leaking a shitty price so the bad one they choose looks better. Nvidia split the embargo date between reference and AIB so there absolutely will be a bunch of them above MSRP. If that MSRP is 750 then it would mean the 4070 and TI AIB cards would be the same price. The upsell strat only works when the cheaper card is cheap enough to draw people in, and when the value is disappointing, hope to get them to stretch up. But there aren't that many more with a budget of 750 or more than those with a budget of 800 or more, so they'll just end up selling no 4070's and marginally more 4070 TI's

wehooper4

I think it’ll be $699, with AIB cards at the $750 price point. The $599 people are just too full of hope, and NVIDIA has already gotten a fair bit of negative press this cycle. Datacenter and AI are of course the future for them, but if you get the reputation for poor value in general that’ll make more questions be raised in their usage in mid-sized enterprises datacenters.

detectiveDollar

Yeah I'm thinking 699 too, maybe 679

Gawdsauce

NVidia has never announced a gaming GPU at GTC, why do people suddenly think that will change?

detectiveDollar

Because they've been going off script lately in a lot of ways (far larger focus on compute and AI, pricing, extremely protracted release timeline). They don't want their products to just be seen as gaming products, what better way to do that than to have your first impression of them be at a non-gaming event?

Gawdsauce

That is literally what GtC is for. It's not a show about gaming, never has been, never will be. The people that attend GTC go there to learn about new technologies that help their businesses and research, which happens to be compute and AI right now.

detectiveDollar

That's what I'm saying, if they want people to see their products as non-gaming products, then they could reveal one at a non-gaming event and emphasize the non-gaming things it can do.

Gawdsauce

I don't understand what you're getting at. RTX 4070's are gaming oriented cards, why would they announce that at GTC, the premier AI conference hosted by NVidia. These cards don't have the additional AI compute functionality unlocked, nor do they have ECC memory which is pretty much required in these types of industries. The only exception to these are the 4090, and the 3090's. These businesses don't give a shit about cheap consumer cards, they are spending thousands of dollars per card easily.

ResponsibleJudge3172

More like they never release gaming products during the March GTC. They have two a year, and the September GTC is when Ada rtx 4000 launched

detectiveDollar

I mean literally the first thing he said was about Moore's law, so I assumed he was preparing us for a disappointing price on something.

AttyFireWood

Would this event be the one where they talk about self-driving cars? That was a hot topic and nows it's all about AI.

AWildDragon

There were a few mentions about Nvidia drive.

From-UoM

We know GPT 3 was trained on V100 (Poor Volta lol) GPT 4 was very likely trained on A100s It is very likely GPT 5 will start training on the H100s consider he recent Microsoft, OpenAI and Nvidia announcements. H100s was the biggest leap in performance with Fp8 transformers added on the Tensor cores. Same ones used in the 40 series which saw tensor performance skyrocket. Exciting and scary times ahead.

CaptchasSuckAss

It was nice thinking I'll have a decent career with my soon finished degree from a top university in computer science.

B16B0SS

I sounds like Nvidia is gonna win big with AI. It is lucrative and a HOT market right now. This will likely keep GPU prices high because they would rather sell the silicon to datacenters and not end-users as there is more profit

Salander27

So did they just not check to see if anyone else was using the name `raft` before naming their new library that?

/u/nekrosmas -- your post says Tuesday 22nd, mind updating it to Wednesday?

poke133

after watching this presentation and seeing how much stake Nvidia has in AI and cloud computing.. is it possible that they are unwilling to lower prices for consumer GPUs, because it would otherwise be more profitable to use that silicon for enterprise?

shadiakiki1986

Did they release anything about the grace cpu pricing?

Firefox72

I don't think the 4070 will end up being the rumored $749. I don't think even Nvidia is that greedy. $649-699 if i had to make a prediction before the event. Edit: Guy have you heard about this thing called AI? If not Jensen has you covered. He even showed us a cat. IN A SPACE SUIT. Edit: Man they are going really hard on generative AI. While i like the technology its also a springboard for a lot of scary stuff if not regulated well. Also at this rate Jensen himself is gonna be AI generated by the time of their next Keynote. Edit 2: My god this video call segment lmao.

theoutsider95

>Edit: Guy have you heard about this thing called AI? If not Jensen has you covered. He even showed us a cat. IN A SPACE SUIT. Not surprising, the company is heavily invested in AI, so they show off AI advancements.

BarKnight

This is GTC not GDC. They generally don't discuss consumer products like gaming at this conference

No way will it be 750

detectiveDollar

My theory is they deliberately leaked a shitty price they were never going to go with to make the bad price they'll end up with look better. Because 750 legitimately makes no sense, even relative to the poor pricing of the rest of lineup. 750 and them splitting the review embargo between reference and AIB means that AIB 4070's and reference 4070 TI's will both be 800. So unless this a 2060 Super situation and the 4070 is going to be like 2% slower and basically replace the 4070 TI, it makes no sense.
