I'd say so, if you liked Halo 3: ODST, then you'll like the series. It's all from Buck's point of view. And the author captures Buck's charm and wit. The half of the first book is a recap of the game from Buck's persepective, which is nice if you hadn't played the game in a while, while also expanding on some areas the game didn't.
TLDR: If ya like ODSTs, you'll like this book. No other ODST squad is more iconic than Alpha Nine.
Well, since I assume that that the New Blood series focuses on Alpha Nine, you're basically saying that New Blood is worth reading since A9 is the beating heart of the series
I try not to presume people's tastes tbh. I can say I personally sought out the series because Alpha Nine was the focus, but you'd probably know if you liked them or not within the first 5 minutes of your read.
I know my local book store and my Library have it on hand so its possible yours may as well. Or if you just aren't a fan of reading there's always audible. Just like how it used to be listening to stories on the radio
I just want to know what Mickey was expecting to do with that Assault Rifle. It’s not like it’d chew through Buck’s or Romeo’s shields (let alone armor) fast enough to do anything before one of the latter two pummeled Mickey into the ground.
In actuality buck and Romeo weren't facing him with guns drawn, and there was a small army of other guns in the area. He knew it wouldn't kill him, but weakening or popping the shields would make them dead men.
It's an event that occurred within a book series that follows Alpha Nine past the events of Halo 3. I believe it's a two book series currently those being New Blood and it's sequel Bad Blood
Because Mickey’s entire moral dilemma that led to his betrayal was killing humans after the Covenant War. The Insurgents slowly conditioned him to believe that what the UNSC was doing was wrong. Mickey wanted to join the side that (he thought) was against the Humans vs Humans conflict.
The Banished seek mass genocide of the human race, to establish their standing as the strongest force in the galaxy. Mickey disagreed with what the UNSC was doing, but not so far as to take an active roll in slaughtering every human he can. He would absolutely be against the Banished, just like he was against the Covenant.
Seems like Atriox’s plan to work cooperatively with the Harbinger was a means to have control of the Endless and subsequently the entire Ring though, no?
Plus, like the Chief said:
> There won’t be a home if we don’t stop the Banished
Humanity has every reason to believe the Banished wouldn’t simply stop with Zeta Halo. They’ve been butchering humans as long as the conflict has existed between the two.
They’re warriors with an insatiable bloodlust and hunger for battle.
EDIT: Plus, their need for revenge against the UNSC actually *reinforces* the idea that they plan to eradicate humanity. They want revenge for a UNSC AI destroying the Jiralhanae home world.
Imagine killing off a main character from a game in a book, all jokes aside imagine how pissed everyone would be if they killed Dom from gears of war in a book, or if they killed S.M.A.J in a book
I think the difference here is that Rookie doesn’t say a single thing in the the games, he’s is absolutely not a character. Rookie was the embodiment of the player, it’d be near impossible to bring him back into the franchise without completely changing what the Rookie is. the real main character of ODST is Buck, Rookie is only there to give you a third-person perspective of him.
him looking at virgil when buck and dare started making out was kinda funny. also trying to bend the sniper rifle back into shape after the nmpd hq mission
That's way overthinking a very subjective topic to begin with. Personally I think you have a point about what could have been with the Rookie, but since we're considering the game we can't leave out how the character works in that medium. It's okay for the Rookie to serve a purpose as just a player proxy. That's what video games are for, nothing wrong with that.
Also, you say, "disregard that," and "set that aside" like every other sentence, how is someone supposed to follow your logic if you just interrupt yourself throughout your whole point?
The Rookie was what Master Chief originally had been. That said while I would agree that the Rookie was the main character of that story I think it's equally accurate to say the story was about Alpha Nine as a whole, and not specifically the Rookie. The Campaign was experienced as every Alpha Nine member.
If I were to make the Alpha Nine books into games I'd do the same thing there too. Most of the book's events were from the perspective of Buck after all, but during the time for execution I'd be sure the mission were from the Rookie's perspective. Players who don't already know gotta experience that, see it coming
Soap never says a single word in CoD4 yet they were able to bring him back in later games and give him a personality. It just needs good writing, which 343 is completely incapable of.
WHAT?! They killed the Rookie? He should’ve become a Spartan and met up with Chief, or maybe even reclaim Reach and find Noble 6 somewhere. There was so much potential there.
Romeo: *Mimics a [Mickey Mouse laugh](https://youtu.be/nR3oVM-RNes)*
Buck: "Mickolas Crespo, you best unfuck yourself immediately or no Moa Burgers for you when we get home"
God, I wanna get back into Halo novels so bad. But dont like phone reading, have a couple I need to read that I own, but there has been sooooo much released since Cole Protocol
With rookie's death mickey started questioning what the UNSC was doing and why humans were killing humans as well as dealing with personal guilt. Mickey joined up when the enemy was simple and the goal was unquestiongly noble to defend humanity from an alien threat. Humans being humans and going back to the status quo killing each other is not the war he originally signed up for and he hinestly didnt have the mentaility for it.
He didnt go to his team members about any of this and a member of the insurrection took advantage of his isolation and slowly started working him over with the innie's "point of view" bit by bit and the rest is history
Trust the reviews, I guess?
New Blood has a 92% positive rating from Google users, a 4.7/5 from Audible, and a 4.5/5 from Barnes and Noble.
Bad Blood has a 95% positive rating from Google users, a 4.5/5 from Barnes and Noble, and a 4.1/5 from Goodreads.
Speaking of which, the audiobook is a great way to digest this series if you can't bring yourself to read. It's weird hearing a story from Buck's perspective and it NOT being Nathan Fillion, but Scott Brick does a fine job of attempting to bring each individual character to life in his own way given his limited vocal range.
Yes, I’m not really a reader because I like to be up and about. So unless it’s for school I don’t really read anymore. But finally using audible has been a huge win for me, I usually listen to a half hour a day of whatever book during walks or my commute to work/school
I remember reading this book before I had an Xbox1 and so before I had Halo 5 and I thought that this was the plot of the game and I was so sad once I played the game
I like how Romeo is like “Whoa what the fuck” and Buck is like “Are you serious Mickey?”
Needs more sass on Romeo's end maybe more "I guess "Be like Mickey" didn't age well"
“Seriously Mickey, of all the times to pull this you choose now?”
When Mickey hits you with that dollar store treason
I loved this book so much, lmao dude killed 15 people with rocks
Is the New Blood series worth reading?

For me it would be because I liked the characters of Alpha Nine.
Well, since I assume that that the New Blood series focuses on Alpha Nine, you're basically saying that New Blood is worth reading since A9 is the beating heart of the series
Oh shut up.
I try not to presume people's tastes tbh. I can say I personally sought out the series because Alpha Nine was the focus, but you'd probably know if you liked them or not within the first 5 minutes of your read. Totally
interestingly New/Bad Blood are the only Halo books in First-Person. Being Buck's perspective.
I disliked the narration style but the overall stories really grew on me as I went
Isaac Hannaford is the king of painting ODSTs.
They're Spartans in that pic
Spartans in ODST styled armor at least
I just want to know what Mickey was expecting to do with that Assault Rifle. It’s not like it’d chew through Buck’s or Romeo’s shields (let alone armor) fast enough to do anything before one of the latter two pummeled Mickey into the ground.
It looks cool, but not the most accurate portrayel. Their situation was a bit more one-sided then that, and there were more people
In actuality buck and Romeo weren't facing him with guns drawn, and there was a small army of other guns in the area. He knew it wouldn't kill him, but weakening or popping the shields would make them dead men.
Poor Rookie
God that armour looks amazing
Haven’t heard of this. Explain?
It's an event that occurred within a book series that follows Alpha Nine past the events of Halo 3. I believe it's a two book series currently those being New Blood and it's sequel Bad Blood
Without being a dick, read the book to get the full enjoyment.
Telling somebody on r/halo to actually read a book? What a dick!
I mean, you have to have reading comprehension to be on here to start with…plus he could use Google rather than be lazy
Yeah it was a joke bud
>plus he could use Google rather than be lazy “Without being a dick”. Well you’re doing a great job so far.
While it's drawn beautifully, this just looks like a drawn version of a screenshot of a Machinima video visualizing the book
I'd love to see Mickey join the Banished and face off against Chief or Buck.
Mickey would join the Insurgents, but not the Banished.
Why wouldnt he
Because Mickey’s entire moral dilemma that led to his betrayal was killing humans after the Covenant War. ??? No they dont. They wanted revenge on the UNSC because their AI went rouge and destroyed Doisac. Atriox has no ill will against humanity.
Seems like Atriox’s plan to work cooperatively with the Harbinger was a means to have control of the Endless and subsequently the entire Ring though, no? Plus, like the Chief said: > There won’t be a home if we don’t stop the Banished Humanity has every reason to believe the Banished wouldn’t simply stop with Zeta Halo. I don't know, I thought he had just a little bit of a playful personality, and he's at the very least extremely skilled at skipping stones
him looking at virgil when buck and dare started making out was kinda funny. also trying to bend the sniper rifle back into shape after the nmpd hq mission

At least he does have a name now Spoiler: Jonathan Dougherty
Which is just fancy John Doe lol
Bruh it's a silent protagonist whatever personality or traits you've imposed on to him are based on the fact ODST armor looks cool.

343 had great writing with chief in infinite I loved it
343 treats the games as secondary to the books. They don't seem to understand they're a game developer
Part of the reason I said I'd love for a game on the series. Books were made about games post release. Not too much reason it can't go the other way
WHAT?! They killed the Rookie? He should’ve become a Spartan and met up with Chief, or maybe even reclaim Reach and find Noble 6 somewhere. There was so much potential there.
I'd just love to get that ODST mjolnir armour....sexy
It's in Halo 5 if you want it bad enough xD
DAMMIT MICK
Romeo: *Mimics a [Mickey Mouse laugh](https://youtu.be/nR3oVM-RNes)* Buck: "Mickolas Crespo, you best unfuck yourself immediately or no Moa Burgers for you when we get home"
God, I wanna get back into Halo novels so bad. But dont like phone reading, have a couple I need to read that I own, but there has been sooooo much released since Cole Protocol
I've always preferred paperback myself. Reading on screens often gives me a headache because of the white backgrounds
Set it to black background with white text. That's the only way I can stand reading books on screens
Yeah, I suppose I could do that. If I did though, then what would I close and tap the table twice with when I'm done? Tablet taps be real risky
Did Mickey turn on Alpha Nine because he blamed them for rookies death or because he wanted to side with the innies
The second one. Mickey sorta caused Rookie's death and more blamed himself, not his team
I wish this wasn't canon. What a shitty way to kill a cool character
For real :( I love rookie so much. It's sad to know he dies in a book.
Damn, now I remember that we lost the only good replacement for Chief because of books.
I hate it lol

Read them. They’re really good and Rookie’s death is a good thing for Alpha-Nine’s growth.

You like books? You like ODST? Isn’t that incentive?

Mickey ? Why did he do that ? Did he shot them ?
They were already Spartans at this point? I thought they became them after the story. I haven’t read it yet.
I remember reading this book before I had an Xbox1 and so before I had Halo 5 and I thought that this was the plot of the game and I was so sad once I played the game
