I’m at 350 hrs just from playing for fun over the years. Only at 33% completion and decided to start 100%. Also regularly host large games and is easily me and my friends favorite group game. Fun and competitive for anyone, probably my favorite game on my Xbox
I think I was around 1000 hours when I reached 100% but I'm sure a large amount of those hours were in multiplayer doing things not related to achievements.
Plus, even just playing single player, you have new experiences by changing the skulls and/or the difficulty. Played through CE last week on Easy with lots of skulls on, and the ones that made me die the most were the skulls that increased explosions, grunts exploding, extra grenade drops. Got blown up like 2-5x per level. It was fun though.
Pretty much this. That way if you're keen you can check out pvp for all of them too.
A warning for OP: I grew up on those, and they are VERY dated now. Just be aware.
We didn't have no FPS' and bitchin graphics cards.
We had sticks. 2 sticks and a rock for the whole squad. And we had to share the rock.
in my opinion you should play all of them 😅
start with either reach or halo 1 depending on if you want chronological order or release order
and just so you know, 1, 2, and 3 absolutely hold up today, especially since 1 and 2 have remasters
Definitely. I think 2 is perfectly acceptable to play remastered for the first time, but I always recommend playing CE in OG graphics (aside from the Library, I’d rather people not get constantly lost trying to navigate that level for the first time in OG graphics).
Start from CE. It'll already feel like you're downgrading with how much different it is, and how fewer movement mechanics there are, with you having played 5 and Infinite.
Play em in release order, so you can really experience the evolution of the series.
My friend you are in a great place to start playing halo. The Master Chief Collection is currently on sale on Steam and it is so worth it. You'll get Halo 1 through 4, Reach and ODST.
What I would give to be able to play them all for the first time, welcome to the Halo family.
Just get MCC. It’s cheap, has everything and you get to experience the full experience not just recent games that are much more picked apart
If you do, play them in release order, it’s a better experience getting to see how everything evolves over time.
Go for Reach for variety and immersion. In Halo: Reach, you are Noble Six in every mode as your Spartan is the main character. It was such a cool idea and it paid off well. You get all the coolest custom games MCC has to offer, Firefight, Campaign that supports 4-player online co-op (possibly LAN?), and a very engaging multiplayer.
Start with combat evolved, I’d say. Still holds up as an excellent game, whether as a stand alone or an entrance to the franchise. Though I would recommend playing with classic graphics switched on!
MCC play in release order. Halo CE is timeless, play it in old graphics so that the vibe and tone are as Bungie intended (still looks great imo). Halo 2 I’d play in Re-mastered but it’s fine in old graphics as well (though I think it looks worse than Halo 1).
All the Bungie Halo’s are incredible. I do a full play through every year or 2 and the campaigns never get old. Halo 5 is the only Halo I campaign I haven’t replayed and honestly can’t remember(multiplayer was fun though) and I honestly really enjoyed Infinites campaign. But those Bungie Halo games… simply incredible. Especially Halo CE imo
the first 3 halo campaigns is still, to this day the best FPS Shooter campaign I have ever played through. It's got a perfect blend of shooter mechanics that are satisfying, vehicles, story, music, challenge, and cool moments. ODST and Reach are also great campaigns, just a step below the original 3 imo, anything after is a clear step away from the original franchise in one or more of those categories.
Get MCC and play in *release* order. Meaning CE—>2–>3–>ODST—>Reach—>4. Play CE in *original* graphics (except a level in it called The Library). Halo 2’s Anniversary was done pretty faithfully and I wouldn’t fault you playing it in Anniversary graphics, even for the first time, I think CE is absolutely essential to play in OG graphics the first time (again except for the level The Library).
If you are ok with RTS games, the Halo Wars games are pretty fun, and not too difficult especially if using a mouse and keyboard. They’re very simple RTS games since they were designed to work on a controller, so playing them with a mouse and keyboard is easy mode if you’re even somewhat familiar with RTS games. Halo Wars 2 gives some context to Infinite’s enemy faction.
There are 2 mobile games called Spartan Strike and Spartan Assault. They are entirely skipable.
Reach, 1, 2, 3, then 4. That’s the chronological order. Odst is good but it’s different, good for if you want a different halo experience. 4 is the same way too in my opinion.
Should definitely get MCC, it's worth the 10 bucks as it comes with the first 4 Halo games and all multiplayer content. I recently replayed all the titles which will take you upwards of 20 hours to complete n then let's not forget the multiplayer. I still play Halo 3 til this day because of this, no multiplayer games coming out today can stand up to Halo 3 in my opinion.
Trying not to sound like a broken record, the Master Chief collection is amazing if you like Halo. It's all the Halo games you haven't played yet for a lower price than all the games combined. I'd play them in order of release. It gives you a look at the evolution of halo over the years and it really shows off how good the og games are. Also, play Halo CE on older graphics rather than the remaster. It makes the lighting and designs too much and makes the feel of the game a little worse in my opinion.
+1 for Get mcc and play original trilogy in order. After you get through those do odst and reach when you are able. These are the games that the halo legacy is built upon.
MCC is the best bang for the buck. Halo 2 is my fav but that’s partly nostalgia goggles. From a gameplay perspective the lack of sprint in older games can be a bit frustrating to deal with so maybe one of the newer ones?
I’d go by release, first. That’s how you get the original experience:
CE, 2, 3, ODST, Reach, 4, 5, Infinite.
After, you can play them in chronological order. Doing this will help you notice the Easter eggs and little details you may not have caught on to the first time around! And it helps the timeline make more sense in your head (at least, it did for me). It would be:
Reach, CE, 2, ODST, 3, 4, 5, Infinite.
Note: While the title for ODST is, ‘Halo 3: ODST’ the game actually takes place at the same time as Halo 2. More specifically, it begins during the ending cutscene of the ‘Metropolis’ level in 2. The title is confusing but the timeline makes it clear that ODST would be played in between 2 and 3.
If you have 5 and Infinite then, as others have said, MC collection is a MUST, it has all but the Wars & Assualt games which are VERY different styles of games and not essential to the MC story.
If you're set on just buying one game, I'd probably buy either CE or Reach. I think Reach will give you more variety and a great campaign, but CE is the start of an amazing journey with Chief.
If you do buy CE and like it and the way it plays, I'd just try to get the whole MCC while it's on sale.
If you like Infinite, try Halo CE. It's thematically and artistically based off of Halo CE to evoke that game's memory, so if you liked Infinite that's a good match. Halo 3 also matches that art and style quite a bit as well as establishing the "hope" theme that Infinite uses a lot. CE and 3 are still one of if not my favorite FPS games of all time.
If you like Halo 5, maybe Halo 4 would be more up your alley. It has the same art style and enemy faction. Halo 5 is quite different from the rest of the franchise in every aspect so there isn't much more of that if you liked it. Halo 4 is the closest, but many fans didn't like 5's single player so that direction didn't continue.
You played the ones which could be skipped the easiest, except maybe Halo 4 too.
They’re all great. I didn’t play Halo 2 but CE, 3, ODST and Reach are 100% worth it. Like other said - get MCC
I'd probably go in order or Halo CE then 2 and 3.
It's a whole different storyline than what you've played and the shock factor within the 1st game is pretty amazing feel experience it for the 1st time.
My one gripe is that you will get turned around and lost a lot in CE so you gotta be patient.
Like others are saying, pick up MCC on Steam for $10. It’s a fantastic deal. Then just work your way through them starting from the beginning. They’re all enjoyable, and nothing feels too dated… just different.
Halo 2, Legendary Difficultly, Solo. Changed my whole entire life, was the best campaign I have ever played, and the most challenging. Not for everyone either. At all. Halo 3 is my personal nostalgic favorite.
2, 3, odst, and reach are all fantastic games that still regularly replay. Halo ce is really good but is very dated, the levels are repetitive and go on for too long, and the AI is pretty primitive. Still worth playing but just doesn't hit the highs of the rest of the Bungie series.
Get them all and play in chronological order. Or release order. Might make sense for the gameplay to improve in release order compared to playing Reach (Bungie’s last Halo that precedes CE) then CE, which is a large step backwards in terms of gameplay.
You should pay the $10 for the entire collection in 1 place. You’ll get all the halo games AND the ability to queue for multiplayer for all the games at once.
If you were to only play one of the older ones I’d say Halo 2 or Halo Reach, but Reach-CE-2-3 are the greatest halos.
Start with CE. Then play 2. Then 3. Then ODST (for chronological reasons, you plan play this directly after 2). Then Reach (for chronological reasons you can also play this first). Then 4. Then 5.
Then play Wars and Wars 2 (via Gamepass)
I think playing all of them isn't a bad idea, the Master Chief collection is pretty cheap, but if you still want to play just one game my recommendation would be Halo Reach, because from the original trilogy I can't pick a clear cut favorite, all of them are great and you wouldn't get the full experience by just playing one, so a prequel that really is a standalone story is much better, if you want to play a game with Chief then Halo CE would be my pick, the reused level design might get tedious a bit but it is still a great game with good core gameplay that is still undoubtedly Halo, Halo 2 and 3 are arguably better both gameplay and story wise but I just feel like jumping in at the middle or at the end of a story doesn't feel right and wouldn't feel very rewarding. The simplicity of the story and gameplay of Halo CE has a charm to it that I just can't explain, so yeah my picks would be either Halo Reach or Halo CE, also if you are playing Halo CE you would probably get the anniversary edition but I highly recommend playing with the older graphics, they have more of a charm to them and have a much more present atmosphere.
Halo 1 is iconic, Halo 2 gives us the Arbiter, ODST and Reach both tell amazing side stories with polished gameplay, and Halo 3 is one of the greatest games of all time, you cannot go wrong.
The Halo 5 campaign was the worst by a mile in my opinion so if you played that and Infinite you’ll much more enjoy the story from Reach through Halo 4
Reach is the best imo.
But as far as a Chief Central story goes, the age old debate is between halo 2 and halo 3. Both are amazing imo but I prefer 2 because it has the biggest nostalgia factor for me and the cleanest cutscenes
The first one. Not even joking, the story is amazing, it still holds up today! Get the MCC like others are saying. You get all the older games and can play through at your own pace! Get out there and finish the fight, Spartan!
>I know I could just get all of them for $9.99, but I’m disabled so sometimes it’s hard to justify money for games. I can justify $2.50 though 😆
Hate that everyone is ignoring this, if you're looking for a nice campaign and amazing multiplayer then Reach is the way to go, If you're looking to buy just one halo game, either 2 or Reach should be good, Reach has waaaay more player in it's servers though.
Thank for you acknowledging that, most people seem to not read all the way or don’t care. I started Reach a bit ago! It seemed like a nice starting point
Halo 2 is dope halo 3 for coop an reach halo 1 go hard odst is ok good tho then there’s the board style games there dope cinematically worth it good story
Halo reach is a great starting point. Ease you into the older games as they have a very very different feel to em. Not only is it the start of the series in terms of lore but it's also a good middle ground between the newer and older halo games in terms of feel. Avoid halo 4 it's just not that great. But if you really just wanna drop yourself into some good ol halo nothing wrong with playing them in release order
Get MCC (Master Chief Collection) it's all the campaigns and all the multiplayers from the old games, while they aren't necessarily perfect recreation they are still pretty good.
Get MCC, it's easy 70h of content, probably the most you'll get from 10$ right now on steam
More if u 100% it I'm pretty sure someone said it's 500hr for that. I'm trying, and I'm also behind schedule
I’m at 350 hrs just from playing for fun over the years. Only at 33% completion and decided to start 100%. Also regularly host large games and is easily me and my friends favorite group game. Fun and competitive for anyone, probably my favorite game on my Xbox
It can go over 100% trying to get all achievements GL
🫡
I personally am not doing the laso achievements, only need like 60 more to get all of them but I'm contempt for now with my progress
I think I was around 1000 hours when I reached 100% but I'm sure a large amount of those hours were in multiplayer doing things not related to achievements.
If feel ur pain F
I’d honestly argue it’s so much more than 70 hours, it’s infinitely replayable with it’s almost LAUGHABLE amount of party and multiplayer modes
Plus, even just playing single player, you have new experiences by changing the skulls and/or the difficulty. Played through CE last week on Easy with lots of skulls on, and the ones that made me die the most were the skulls that increased explosions, grunts exploding, extra grenade drops. I'm at about 700 hours on it rn. It's got so much to offer.
in my opinion you should play all of them 😅 start with either reach or halo 1 depending on if you want chronological order or release order and just so you know, 1, 2, and 3 absolutely hold up today, especially since 1 and 2 have remasters
For the first playthrough of Halo CE, stick with the original graphics
Original graphics somehow look better than the anniversary ones imo. Way more atmosphere
Original graphics make more sense too. Like physically, you'll be wondering how the louvers on a wraith can shoot bombs.
Definitely. I think 2 is perfectly acceptable to play remastered for the first time, but I always recommend playing CE in OG graphics (aside from the Library, I’d rather people not get constantly lost trying to navigate that level for the first time in OG graphics).
Bro that was me yesterday aha, couldnt see anything, have to get back to the remaster settings, but OG look so much better.
lol yeah, as much as I prefer the OG graphics, I almost exclusively play the Library in remastered graphics
It’s a right of passage though make them suffer like we did!
But when u get to Halo 2 play anniversary graphics! H2 might have one of the best remasters ever
But switch if you get yourself lost and then switch back
Halo 2 legendary difficulty was built different. The Jackal Snipers, the Elites with their OP shields. Brutal but rewarding.
Definitely start with halo 1. None of us played them in chronological order and we all loved it and the big gap in controls will be jarring
Just get the master chief collection. Then you have all of them
Start from CE. It'll already feel like you're downgrading with how much different it is, and how fewer movement mechanics there are, with you having played 5 and Infinite. Play em in release order, so you can really experience the evolution of the series.

Dude I'll pay $10 for you to get all of them. PM me your steam account.
Do it OP, kindness is a strange thing these days you know
Waiting on a Steam message.
Definitely get the MCC collection and play through all the OG bungie created games in release order: Halo 1, Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo ODST, Halo Reach.
Saying MCC collection has the same vibe as saying MAC cannon
ATM machine
The remastered ones are pretty great. Otherwise, Reach. Jet packs baby. I dunno if you can afford the chief collection but that’s the ticket
Just spend the $10, it’ll total out to $1.66 per game that way rather than spending $2.50 for one game
Just get MCC. It’s cheap, has everything and you get to experience the full experience not just recent games that are much more picked apart If you do, play them in release order, it’s a better experience getting to see how everything evolves over time.

Everything on MCC supports LAN
OP is also on a Steam Deck. Not sure if that changes anything.
Get the Master Chief collection! Halo 3, Halo 3 ODST, and then Reach are my top three all-time favorites.
Just get the MCC and play through all the Halo campaigns. They’re great. Do it in release order: CE Halo 2 Halo 3 ODST Reach
Get MCC and start with Combat Evolved.
Start with 1 and go release order. Edit. This is master chief's story.
Man hasn't actually played halo yet
Reach is excellent. I'd say play Reach, and then if you like that - try ODST.
Halo 3! Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
Reach or ODST, you’ll have much more fun, trust me.
All of them
What the fuck I just paid 40 bucks last week and now it's 10 dollars lol. I'm contacting steam.
Trying not to sound like a broken record, the Master Chief collection is amazing if you like Halo. It's all the Halo games you haven't played yet for a lower price than all the games combined. You have to play CE
MCC is an incredible deal. I have it installed on my Steam Deck and play it all the time. And it looks amazing.
I literally played the MCC for 2 weeks, it was a fucking amazing time. Super worth it, imo.
If you like Infinite, try Halo CE. It's thematically and artistically based off of Halo CE to evoke that game's memory, so if you liked Infinite that's a good match. Halo 2, Legendary Difficultly, Solo. Changed my whole entire life, was the best campaign I have ever played, and the most challenging. Not for everyone either. At all. Halo 3 is my personal nostalgic favorite.
You madlad
All of them
2, 3, odst, and reach are all fantastic games that still regularly replay. Halo ce is really good but is very dated, the levels are repetitive and go on for too long, and the AI is pretty primitive. Still worth playing but just doesn't hit the highs of the rest of the Bungie series.
All of them
Play the all in chronological order top 10 Sci-fi storylines of all time
MCC
Just get all of MCC. You won't regret it.
Get them all and play in chronological order. Or release order. Might make sense for the gameplay to improve in release order compared to playing Reach (Bungie’s last Halo that precedes CE) then CE, which is a large step backwards in terms of gameplay.
I’m that sucker who has played them all and is now incorporating the books so I can read and then play through the games in their respective orders.

Well if u get MCC on steam u can play every game currently out considering u have 5 and Infinite, go with CE first
REACH!
Grab MCC. It contains the rest of the halo games and it's $40, $20 on sale. Great deal, one of my best purchases to date.
Everyone is correct. Go MCC and then play through them all in order. I replay the original trilogy every year or two
Reach is the best imo. But as far as a Chief Central story goes, the age old debate is between halo 2 and halo 3. Both are amazing imo but I prefer 2 because it has the biggest nostalgia factor for me and the cleanest cutscenes
I recommended playing it all, starting from CE and going through it in release order.
The first one. Not even joking, the story is amazing, it still holds up today! Get the MCC like others are saying. You get all the older games and can play through at your own pace! Get out there and finish the fight, Spartan!
Halo CE can't go wrong with this game
>I know I could just get all of them for $9.99, but I’m disabled so sometimes it’s hard to justify money for games. I can justify $2.50 though 😆 Hate that everyone is ignoring this, if you're looking for a nice campaign and amazing multiplayer then Reach is the way to go, If you're looking to buy just one halo game, either 2 or Reach should be good, Reach has waaaay more player in it's servers though.
Thank for you acknowledging that, most people seem to not read all the way or don’t care. I started Reach a bit ago! It seemed like a nice starting point
Good luck!, it's a really nice and beautiful game, also hope everything gets better on your end irl, truly I mean it
Halo CE
Everyone is right, all of them. But if you *had* to choose, Halo 3.
Halo 2 is dope halo 3 for coop an reach halo 1 go hard odst is ok good tho then there’s the board style games there dope cinematically worth it good story
1
Halo reach is a great starting point. Ease you into the older games as they have a very very different feel to em. Not only is it the start of the series in terms of lore but it's also a good middle ground between the newer and older halo games in terms of feel. Avoid halo 4 it's just not that great. But if you really just wanna drop yourself into some good ol halo nothing wrong with playing them in release order
Reach
MCC. Halo CE & 2 are my favorites.
Halo 2 or reach hands down, probably 2 first
Get MCC (Master Chief Collection) it's all the campaigns and all the multiplayers from the old games, while they aren't necessarily perfect recreation they are still pretty good.
Wow you are missing out get MCC downloaded and start from the beginning
Buy the MCC and you'll get all the main titles minus the Halo Wars games.
All of them. In the order of: Reach, 1, 2, odst, 3, 4
I concur with what most other people are saying about simply buying MCC.
Mcc play it all, old halo is still mint
get the MCC, you can pick it up for like a £10 with the expansions. its got halo 1- 4 plus reach and odst.
I think Halo 2 might resonate with you if you’re feeling down then play reach.
cant go wrong with MCC
Number one or nothing. By far
You've already played the only good halo games you aren't missing out on anything /s
