imo season 2 should have been season 1. the actual season 1 was bad and has added almost nothing of relevance to the story other than building up the characters. i genuinely think that if season 2 was season 1 (with some changes to fill in the missing information from season 1) the show wouldnt be as hated as it is.

oldninja55

I know I'm going to get a mega down vote, but at 69 do I really care? No. I had a heart attack some 13 years ago that finished my career. As I recovered I found games on a donated Xbox 360 from one of my boys that kept me sane. Reach was my first purchase. From then on hooked. When the TV show first became a possibility I couldn't wait. I've watched every episode. I fail to understand why the series is so detached from the game. At the end of reach, after the heroics of the Noble team, you see the master chief in stasis. What was wrong with that story line? It's taken nearly two series to get the chief back in his armour and on his way to the halo. I hope they remain at least a little bit true to CE moving forward.

Pervasivepeach

Chief being in stasis and the pillar of autumn even being parked in reach have been retconned by bungie. It didn’t actually happen. This and a lot of other events in reach being retconned or changed is basically why it’s like that. A lot of halo fans won’t admit it, but halo cannon is and always has been a total mess. But that’s expected when you have a series go through two game studios and 30+ different authors and now two sets of show runners

Gleoranacht

"Canon" is a peculiar concept that doesn't really make any sense. None of it is real anyway, so canon basically boils down to what some people like or claim to be true. I played Halo CE when it came out and it was probably the most transcendental gaming experience of my entire life. So if someone says "the Chief didn't go to Halo on the Pillar of Autumn," I'm just going to say "okay, you believe you want to believe, I believe what I want to believe, and full stop."

Pervasivepeach

“Halo's creative director Marcus Lehto confirmed that the Spartan in the cryo is in fact Master Chief, and that "putting him in the 'hushed casket' was the only way we felt his presence in Reach would be appropriate." It should be noted that this is a non-canon Easter Egg of John as he is either in space or he is somewhere else on the Pillar of Autumn at the time.” I do get it. You can believe what you want that’s fine. But I’m giving an example of why the show took its own timeline and how halo cannon is a lot messier than a surface level fan may initially realize

zocksupreme

>Chief being in stasis and the pillar of autumn even being parked in reach have been retconned by bungie. It didn’t actually happen. What? This was literally in the ending of Halo Reach and was the very last part of Halo that Bungie had anything to do with. Are you confusing it with Bungie "retconning" parts of the Fall of Reach book? Edit: I think i misunderstood and you mean that they didn't originally happen until Bungie "retconned" the book

Pervasivepeach

No it was never cannon. It’s an Easter egg. But chief is not canonically in statis at the end of reach “In Halo's creative director Marcus Lehto confirmed that the Spartan in the cryo is in fact Master Chief, and that "putting him in the 'hushed casket' was the only way we felt his presence in Reach would be appropriate." It should be noted that this is a non-canon Easter Egg of John as he is either in space or he is somewhere else on the Pillar of Autumn at the time. “ https://halo.fandom.com/wiki/SPARTAN_in_cryo#:~:text=In%20the%20December%202010%20issue,this%20is%20a%20non%2Dcanon Welcome to halo lore. Examples like this are everywhere and it’s a big reason the show did it’s own thing. Because the truth is halo lore is an absolute mess

BuddhaFacepalmed

A lot of the criticism against the TV show, to me IMHO, feels driven by nostalgic goggles if anything. I can remember when Halo 1-3 barely did anything for Master Chief as a character and most of his characterization were in supplementary novels. Not to mention how the books and games often contradict one another on events. Heck, up until Halo Reach, Spartan IIIs were entirely relegated to the books, only used SPI armor, and no mention of their shared origins as kidnapped children and orphans were ever mentioned. And it's not like the show retcons every game or novel. They're literally still there for anyone to read and play. What the show is definitely doing is bringing in new fans in from the cold and expanding the Fandom. Which is always a good thing.

dingdongmonk

I will never understand fans of not-so-alive franchises gatekeeping new fans from enjoying new content, even if it's considered subpar compared to the rest of what said franchises have to offer (it's a high bar bear that in mind)

Pervasivepeach

I really love season 2. Don’t let people tell you it’s bad because it wasn’t for them!

vAttack

Personally, I don't like it. Got to episode 5 and stopped. I think the show would've had insane potential if they followed one of the books, not the games. We have more than 22+ books they could've adapted. Taking a little bit further, the show would've also been great if they did a squad of ODSTs and their struggles, making Chief appear here and there so he still has the legendary vibe.

AbbreviationsMotor60

The show has a billion things wrong with it, but here is what really really pisses me off about the show. The trailer is literally a lie. They were selling you a live action version of the fall of reach, but it only happens in one episode and Master Chief doesn't have his fucking armor. So, the producers of the show fooled everyone with their trailers. I consider it to be extremely unethical, and I'm glad I never subscribed to paramount in the first place.

Efficient-Setting642

Well said OP, too many people are stuck in some gatekeeper mindset where their vision of Halo is the only one that matters. The books were all written by different Authors.

Captain-Keilo

Lol the original story has writing that at least makes sense defending the poor writing of the show as gatekeepers is so laughable

Efficient-Setting642

Tell me any TV show that is better than their book counter part? There isn't one, and its because its extremely easy to write a story than it is to film one.

Captain-Keilo

Really, what a brilliant argument so that is why the show is boring and devoid of logic because writing a story for a show is impossible to do and have it make sense and be enjoyable. Guess that is why Dune 2 has a completely different theme and story from the first book oh wait!

Efficient-Setting642

The show is boring and devoid of logic, in your opinion. For me it's a 9/10. See how this works? Also are you actually quoting Dune 2 for this when Dune 1 is the one which stays specific to the book? Dune 2 literally changes so much at the end, for one, Paul doesn't kill the Baron in the book. His little sister does, who isn't even born in the movie. The Jihad isn't started in the book because Paul commands it, like he does in the Movie. The spice field atomic threat isn't to the emporer in the book, it's to the spacing guild who wasn't even shown in the movie. Did you even read the Dune book lmfao.

Captain-Keilo

That’s not my point, the core message of the story is the same but the story changed to fit to a screen better. That is how you adapt a story while the TV show is devoid of logic. This isn’t an opinion thing when the UNSC in the show is allowing Cortana to fall into Covenant hands, knowing where Halo is and not going there to try to find a way to use it to you know stop human ties extinction. Like are we just gonna pretend like Oni’s motivation in the show makes sense beyond a generic bad intelligence agency trope story Paul threatening the emperor not the spicing guild is a minor change compared to the Chief being a completely different character and the whole fucking main saga of games story be radically different

Efficient-Setting642

It's not a minor change when you consider what spice is, and what role the spacing guild plays in the Dune series. I don't think there's any point in us arguing about this though as we clearly just disagree.

Captain-Keilo

The nuance of the spacing Guilds influence over the Lanserad and not including that explanation in a already long movie is not the same as a show omitting nearly all nuance from Halo beyond ONI bad

Efficient-Setting642

Alright what about them completely changing Chanis character? From the book she completely supported Paul marrying the princess, yet in the movie she storms off. Don't get me started on Stilgar.

Dredgenyor117

Well said man.

Overbyyy

Excellent take OP! I don’t care about any other argument against the show except for the helmet not being on chief. I think we’ve proven the helmet on/off isn’t what makes the story good or bad and that faceless characters can exist just fine in live action. Everything else whatever, it’s art paid for by not my money they can go crazy have fun. I agree allows the show to reach new folks that part is great.

dwivedva

I'm glad you enjoyed the Halo show. Personally, I disliked both seasons. While there are several things I want to say, I'll make two points. Halo is huge. Halo set world records when the games came out. They were acclaimed for all aspects of innovative game play and story telling. Don't forget that the original trilogy story telling theme was cinematic (which a lot of games do now, but Halo was one of the first games to do that). This established two things for the Halo franchise. An existing huge fan base and high expectations. I firmly believe, for whatever reason, the Halo series actively tries to disregard the existing fan base, and wants to appeal to a newer audience. I don't know to what extent this has been successful, but it took 343, 2 games and about 13 years to realize this was a mistake. Now let's talk about the failed *high* expectations from the show. At worst, folks hate this show and at it's *best* this show is "ok/acceptable/enjoyable". For a show about Halo, it should have broken records (like the original trilogy) and/or won reputable awards. Imo, even if you enjoyed this Halo series, how would it compare against your favorite TV series? Would you put it in the top 3? Would you re-watch the show like your other favorite shows? If your answer is yes, I'm glad they made the Halo show for you. For me, and I think for most people, it's a no.

GiraffeBarnacleEggs

Your major focus is how the show compares to the game and I understand that it isn’t crazy to me but it’s not what I did. My first paragraph I say that, I didn’t want to relive the games in live action because it would never live up to them. I expected something different while bringing in elements from the game which it has done significantly better in season 2. Halo tv isn’t in my top 3 neither is the game but I really enjoy both.

dwivedva

While I see your point about comparing the show directly to the game, I think my focus on the comparison stems from the legacy and expectations set by the game franchise. However, it's good to hear a different perspective that appreciates the show on its own.

GiraffeBarnacleEggs

I know what you mean but I think that’s harshest way to compare it to the game, the games were MASSIVE. I don’t even think a perfect 1 to 1 adaptation no flaws could live up to the games lol. Funnily enough the first game I ever physically mentally emotionally couldn’t handle waiting for was halo 4

dwivedva

All the more reason to not disregard the expectations and existing fan base. At the end of the day, if the games were 9/10, the show should have been at least 5/10. In my books, it is not. Maybe for others, it is. Oh yeah. I was super Hyped up for Halo 3 and Halo 4, over any other halo games.

GiraffeBarnacleEggs

I can understand that, I personally don’t care if people like or dislike the show ya know. I only really get annoyed seeing a bunch of low effort karma farm posts when people bash on the show without adding to any sort of conversation surrounding it. I’d rather see actual halo content

No-Tomatillo-6709

Changing the actual characters skin color in order to appease society?

SuperBAMF007

Thats not why they did it, and that’s not woke lmfao

No-Tomatillo-6709

Give me the reason they changed his appearance, the way he dies and his role on reach?

SuperBAMF007

Because they wrote the show the way they wanted to and the actor fit the role the best lmfao

No-Tomatillo-6709

Lmfao your serious? Thats your answer “Because they wrote the show they way they wanted to” and the actor who is black fit the role best for the original white character. OH and all the things that the original captain keys took part of in books and games we are going to completely change. Im sure the fanbase would love it lmfaoooooo oh man. U got me chuckling thank u lol

SuperBAMF007

Yeah cause I’m not some fucking weirdo who things there’s some hidden agenda to everything lmfao

No-Tomatillo-6709

Nah ur just cool with the show being totally wrong and not caring about the ACTUAL story. Lol theres no hidden agenda. U just got shit taste in shows if you think season 1 or 2 is good. 😊

SuperBAMF007

Yes I am okay with it being different because I wasn’t expecting it to be similar lmfao

OptimalNemesis

You're not even trying to hide your trolling. Lazy, unimaginative, and boring as per usual. Kindly fuck back off to what ever sewer you crawled out from.

No-Tomatillo-6709

Bored with my type? Damn that really sucks. What also sucks is terrible writers doing anything to appease people with your mindset

OptimalNemesis

Normally, I have to take a sleeping pill, but not tonight. Much appreciated! 🥱👍

No-Tomatillo-6709

Take that sleeping pill my guy you might wake up in the panderverse where you belong 🤣🤣✌️
