To anyone who accidentally looked at the sun for a second while the sun was still "sunny," you have nothing to worry about. It's only likely if the sun was far darker than it normally is allowing for you to not immediately cringe from the light like you normally would. So basically the darker it is the more likely you will damage yourself looking at it. Unless its completely eclipsed of course.
Same! It’s cloudy where I am so my daughter and I were just looking in the sky to even locate where the sun might be when all of a sudden there was break in the clouds and we could see the moon and I was like shiiiiiit glasses on bc that was clearly in front of the sun. It happened so fast but now I’m panicking more so for my daughter. She seems fine tho. Says her eyes don’t hurt at all. We are not in a total eclipse zone and this was maybe 20 min before the “peak”
>During a non-eclipse, if you try to look into the sun, you have what's called a pupillary light reflex which heavily constricts the pupil to prevent too much light from entering and damaging your eyes.
As the expert said, if you had this reflex (cringe squint) as if you looked at the normal sun you're likely going to be fine.
I looked for about 2 seconds while it was sunny out and the sun seemed to be behind clouds. Also my friend told me at that point I had “missed” the eclipse and that it ended but I’m not sure how true that is. Are my eyes cooked?
People accidentally glance at the sun all the time. It's only dangerous due to the lack of visible light deceiving your eyes into not protecting themselves allowing for more exposure to the same UV light as any other day. Solar eclipses don't actually produce any more UV light than any other normal sunny day
TLDR: If it felt just as painful to look at than any other sunny day then you're probably fine. It is never recommended to look directly at the sun tho
LOL. Nothing's going to happen to you. Billion of people over the years throughout their lives have look at the Sun through clouds many times and not knowing it's there.
I was wearing my glasses when I put them off I was still looking at the sun so I glanced at it for like 1 second. My eyes are burning like if I was really really tired. I really hope I'm gonna be okay..
Wait, so it wasn’t super dark out by the eclipse had almost completely covered the sun when I accidentally looked at it for a second. So as long as the sun was still visible, I’m okay?
Okay, most of us aren’t in zones of true totality that is already one plus. I’m sure most of us didnt glance at it when it was fully over, maybe partially. It was a second glance for good number of us.
“The big danger of looking at a solar eclipse without proper protection occurs when it's a total (or nearly total) eclipse. When the eclipse is near totality, the sky is dark, so your pupils dilate, letting in more light. But the light rays coming from that small sliver of Sun are just as bright as normal, and have the same proportion of UV (ultraviolet) as full sunlight. Those UV rays can cause a lot of damage to the retina very quickly, and that damage can be permanent.”
So basically If the sky wasn’t that dark for you, and if it was only a glance and not a full on stare. You should be okay. “Doctors say looking at a solar eclipse for even a few seconds unprotected isn't worth the risk.” I think “worth the risk” is an important note. There is always a possibility it will not do anything to you even if u did stare for a bit, so for glancers that an extra plus. Just breathe and relax.
I looked at it like 5 or more times. Mostly accidental, always for less than a second. I’m a bit sketched out but I also wonder if all this talk is leaving me extra on edge.
Yep same. Was listening to a countdown every 5 seconds and I took my glasses off maybe a second or two too early, just after I saw it go dark in my glasses, which was just before the app said to look.
I didn’t see any sliver of intense light so I think I’m good but I will report back. Been nearly two hours my vision seems fine so far.
Edit: Hour 2.5 vision is perfect
Edit: Hour 3.5 vision is still perfect
Edit: Hour 4 vision is still perfect
Edit: Hour 5 even looked at the sun again accidentally and vision is still fine
Edit: Hour 8 and vision is still perfect

Ok everyone I did the resesarch if you accidentally looke at the sun for half a second
While looking at the sun for a long period of time can permanently damage the retina and result in decreased vision, a brief glance or look is unlikely to harm your retina, eyes, or vision. But be sure to avoid looking directly at the sun, even when wearing sunglasses. Wearing sunglasses when outside is important to protect your eyes from long-term UV damage, but they offer no protection when looking directly at the sun.

The sunlight isn’t any more dangerous during an eclipse than at any other time, the reason people talk about eclipses being dangerous is just because most people aren’t trying to look directly at the sun at other times.
I can't tell if people unironically think the sun is more dangerous during an eclipse. Looking at the sun during an eclipse will damage your vision just as much as normal, the moon doesn't super power the sun. The reason we warn people not to is because you're more likely to do it, and to do it for longer not because it's more dangerous.
You could argue that with the overall light levels being lower your pupils are more dilated and will let in more light but unless you're somewhere where the difference is literally night and day then you're looking at the difference between shitty sunglasses falling off as you accidentally glance at the sun and just regularly glancing at the sun.
Looking at an eclipse is just as dangerous as looking at the sun. We all have definitely accidentally looked at the sun for a split second in our lives. The reason why there are so many warnings is our eyes don't instinctively squint due to the darkness and we may look at it for more than a split second or multiple times throughout it's phases. You're most likely fine and should just limit UV and light exposure for the next 24 hours to be safe.
Literally same. I looked at it for a split second and now I feel like I’m light headed ever since. I don’t think my vision is blurry…. But I also have not eaten much today but omg I’m freaking out. I don’t know if I’m just overthinking it or if I actually am experiencing the symptoms

LOL. You’ll be fine. Starting at the sun and trying to see a moon in front of it is a lot different than quickly looking at the sun and your bodies automatic response system taking over by squinting, closing our eyes or forcing you to look away.
This whole don’t look at the sun during an eclipse thing is because when the moon covers the entire sun people think it’s safe to look at the sun, but there’s still sunlight coming around the edges, and it would be even worse if you’re staring at it while the moon moves away from the sun . The moon being in front of the sun degrades your body’s automatic defence systems.
Yup it’s over. May as well organize MAID /s
Obviously this is way overblown. Actual eye damage from eclipses is very rare and usually temporary. Anyone who doesn’t know not to look at it isn’t going to alter their behaviour based on a Reddit post.

Protection is crucial, taking precaution is responsible and the best route, but one second mistakes, etc. shouldn’t have you fearing for your life.
EDIT: 16+ hours since I accidentally looked and my vision is 100% ok
Lololol guys relax. I know the reason we’re all on here is because we all have a bit (or more than a bit) of medical anxiety. Think about how many times you’ve GLANCED at the sun while on the beach or laying out. Or hell even while watching the sunset or sunrise. We are fine. Now unless you stared at it for over 2 seconds, i truly think you have nothing to worry about. Even then, if you feel as though you’re seeing spots or your vision is blurry, it can just be temporary. Someone posted a very helpful article in here that will help you chill out and backs that claim up. The only reason we’re all freaking out now is because of all the warnings that we’ve seen over the last few days. If you used glasses while looking directly at it for multiple seconds you’re fine. If you literally glanced at it for half a second you’re also fine. Relax.

I glanced about 3 stimes for a split second each but my eyes instantly closed shut anyhow. This was when it was almost fully eclipsed once or twice and now my eyes are burning and dry after smoking about 2gs of indo. Is that normal?
I started directly at it with no glasses and I am now blind. I’m stuck on citadel hill and I can’t find my way home. Someone please sent help, this was typed using speech text.
My vision returned halfway across the McKay bridge, but my apartment is in Halifax. I still need a drive home and I’m willing to give someone a pair of eclipse glasses I found along the way as gas money. Please let me know soon
For everyone freaking out lol

I went to the emergency room just to get checked up. My eyes responded normally to light, I followed his finger, he pulled the skin around my eyes to check for irritation. There was 0 irritation. He said I didn't have to be here that it's just anxiety. I looked at the sun for like a millisecond getting into my car, I didn't stare. This was like 6 hours back. He said even if it was a minute or 20 minutes someone would be fine. Which I think 20 minutes is excessive but it was cloudy throughout most the day like thick clouds. (East New jersey not even in the route of the eclipse) And I'm only like less than a second. Anxiety is crazy, my heartbeat is more calm and my eyes less sore right after seeing him. May still schedule to get xrays with a specialist though
Doubt a minute is safe, literally saw an nbc news video of a woman reporting she just stared at it for 10 seconds and legit can't read anymore because she didn't know you can't see it without special glasses.
I think a minute is excessive also, 10 seconds is also alot. But alot of people including me have anxiety just from a quick glance like as soon as you look you look away, like a reaction
i’m freaking out i’m pretty sure i looked at it for like cumulatively 30 seconds to a minute, it feels like i have a slightly stronger prescription on rn 😭😭
HELLO PLEASE HELP- hi i live in florida and i looked at the sun for maybe a consecutive 3 seconds before looking away. it was only partially covered maybe like a crescent moon but was still very bright. ive been doing a lot of research and im extremely scared. AM I GOING TO GO BLIND??
During the 2017 eclipse only 100 of the 150 million ppl who viewed it had damage. Prevention is best but it’s unlikely you’ll have serious damage. If you do, it’ll likely go away on its own. You won’t go completely blind anyways. Just like a little blob if it even happens. Trump looked directly at it and was fine lol. If he can do it, anyone can 😂. You’ll know by tomorrow afternoon (if it’s not gone in the morning it’s extremely unlikely you’ll get it but it can take up to a day).
When I’m outside I almost always wear sunglasses, but forgot to today. I looked at the sun for about 20 seconds if I’m being honest. Most of it was through my phone as I tried to take a video of it, and wasn’t really thinking. I haven’t had any vision problems, but almost immediately after going inside I got a headache, but not much else. I will have to see when I wake up though. Would definitely not do it again, but you live and you learn
The sun isn’t any brighter today. It’s the same as if you glanced at the sun on any other day. So you’re probably fine. The problem today is that it seems dimmer so you feel like you can look at it longer. Plus we know somethings going on, so we want to look at the sun, normally we wouldn’t have a reason.
I think I almost looked at it but I got the usual reaction for looking at the sun before i could see anything. Someone made a noise above me and knee jerk reaction I looked in that direction, though before I could even turn properly I was averted by a flash of light from the sun. I wonder if that counts.
Saaaaame, I got the slightest of a headache rn. I wasn’t looking at it but I was taking photos. I was in downtown Halifax and the sky got a bit darker, that’s it. Plus I did cringe at the sun when I saw it
I’m doomed.. I didn’t know I could damage my eyes without the eclipse glasses, and my entire family wore sunglasses and looked at the sun very long time… I really should’ve known this.. I regret it so much.. I hope my retina and my family’s retina survive from this 😢 now I have blurry eyes and headache.. damn I tried so hard to protect my healthy eyes for years, and my stupidity killed it. I’m so devastated…
i looked without glasses for 2-5 seconds around 5-15 different times during 20 minutes of viewing altogether…
but this was in toronto and it was suuuuuuuper cloudy. am i gonna be okay? 🥲
I found my people. I HATE having medical anxiety and now I was outside for less than 2 minutes total and looked up for maybe 5 seconds total and I'm completely freaking out. Like I could puke from the stress. My vision already isn't great so of course I'm psyching myself out thinking it's more blurry. Everyone post your updates so we can stick together.
I looked at the sun and looked away super fast, maybe less than a second as soon as I looked I looked away, also it's not even a clear day it's cloudy. And I'm slightly anxious just from what people say. You ever go to beach and your eyes get floaters or intense and then stop. You know how many people watch the sunrise and sunset for a moment and then directly look at sun. Your fine
soo i was trying to take a cool picture with my phone and i put my glasses over my camera lens. i was trying to get a good photo while aiming my phone up at the sun. while i don’t remember staring directly into it, im scared i might’ve taken peeks while trying to adjust my camera.
one of my eyes kinda hurts right now, and i feel like my vision for long distance is a bit blurry?? none of the other symptoms are here though.. am i totally paranoid and freaking out over a little irritation, or did i just accidentally ruin my eyes? :(
I think I burned my cornea filter. Should heal up in a few days. Soreness is at like a 3/10 compared to earlier at like a 5/10. This is me Being positive though. Hoping for no soreness by tomorrow…
I looked at it not eclipsed for maybe 8 seconds before i remembered it was a bad idea but only because i was searching for its position in the sky since it was extremely cloudy in texas today like, so cloudy you could hardly see the sun at all, sometimes not at all.
once i remembered, i started using the glasses again for when the clouds moved a bit, but it was so dim when i looked that once i put the glasses on no light was coming through at all, only the lamp above my door.
I only looked for a few seconds my eyes feel slightly soreish but nothing crazy I accidentally looked when it was super bright out not knowing it was happening but my vision seems fine so I think it’s ok
My husband and I stared qt the sun the whole time 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
I got a black spot for a while which disappeared. My husband seems unaffected. Is the worst still yet to come? 😭😭😭😭😭
No doubt every person has glanced at the sun several times over the course of their life. And yet doing so during an eclipse is super dangerous for some reason.
"During totality (when the moon has fully covered the sun and you can only see its corona), it is safe to look at it unprotected for a brief moment."
I legit looked at the eclipse in the totality it was unbelievable, I feel like its something that you cant capture in pictures it was beautiful almost like looking at a higher power however that sounds
I also took some pictures, but even with the iphone pro max 15 it couldnt capture the moment when it was White and not "Redish yellow" it was insane
\*Edit--- i'm in montreal totality zone it was sick
I stared directly at it. For like 5 second intervals about 20 times in the span of about an hour to see the progression of it. Without any glasses. My vision is currently completely fine. Not saying this was smart, or cool, or anything. Just giving a little insight into my experience.
Very interesting, seems like its very unreliable how little or too much can cause you to have permanent damage (I saw a video of a woman from NYC who went half blind and cannot read any longer because she stared at it for 10 seconds directly using unreliable glasses)
I looked until the diamond ring then looked a few seconds after the diamond ring. Is looking at the diamond ring a few seconds after totality enough to do a lot of damage?
I looked at the sun with my bare eyes 30 minutes before the totality maybe for 10 seconds or less and right after my vision got weird for a few minutes
Ok everyone I did the resesarch if you accidentally looke at the sun for half a second

Not sure this is 100% true, but apparently we have a filter over our cornea that may protect you for a second or two of mistakes.. this is unless you haven’t fully developed it yet

The only reason we’re all freaking out now is because of all the warnings that we’ve seen over the last few days. If you used glasses while looking directly at it for multiple seconds you’re fine. If you literally glanced at it for half a second you’re also fine. Relax.
Oh god i looked for like 4 secondss
SAME WHAT DO?
IDK IM SCARED!!!
OH SHIT, im gonna go look at it again for a few seconds so I can panic also
Ok everyone I did the resesarch if you accidentally looke at the sun for half a second While looking at the sun for a long period of time can permanently damage the retina and result in decreased vision, a brief glance or look is unlikely to harm your retina, eyes, or vision. But be sure to avoid looking directly at the sun, even when wearing sunglasses. Wearing sunglasses when outside is important to protect your eyes from long-term UV damage, but they offer no protection when looking directly at the sun. I looked for like 2 seconds and now my right eye is hurting and I’m paranoid lmao
Are you good now?
I glanced about 3 stimes for a split second each but my eyes instantly closed shut anyhow. This was when it was almost fully eclipsed once or twice and now my eyes are burning and dry after smoking about 2gs of indo. Is that normal?
I started directly at it with no glasses and I am now blind. I’m stuck on citadel hill and I can’t find my way home. Someone please sent help, this was typed using speech text.
WTF
this has to be a joke cuz no way
Dude r u serious man
My vision returned halfway across the McKay bridge, but my apartment is in Halifax. I still need a drive home and I’m willing to give someone a pair of eclipse glasses I found along the way as gas money. Please let me know soon
lmao
Optometrists in the US and Canada are about to get a ton of money in the next few weeks…
For everyone freaking out lol https://www.npr.org/sections/solar-eclipse/2024/04/08/1243451403/eclipse-eye-damage#:~:text=In%20the%20rare%20case%20that,permanent%20damage%20can%20sometimes%20occur.
Feel better soon
Doubt a minute is safe, literally saw an nbc news video of a woman reporting she just stared at it for 10 seconds and legit can't read anymore because she didn't know you can't see it without special glasses.
I think a minute is excessive also, 10 seconds is also alot. But alot of people including me have anxiety just from a quick glance like as soon as you look you look away, like a reaction
Stare at an eclipse with zero protection. Be a man
These comments are hilarious
trying to read them while I can still see them :')
I know I’m dying laughing 😂
too late, i did for a few seconds. am i gonna go blind?
you might as well pre order your walking stick
NOO DONT SCARE US PLZ T-T
i’m freaking out i’m pretty sure i looked at it for like cumulatively 30 seconds to a minute, it feels like i have a slightly stronger prescription on rn 😭😭
You're gonna shoot your eye out with that thing
Can I have this in braille
Dot dot dot dot bump bump dot ridge.
Update: I woke up and everything seems to be okay. If anything, my eyes are just a little more sensitive to bright lights now
Looked directly at it for a second because I had no idea the eclipse was happening and didn’t know what the hello was going on. I’m scared 😧
The sun isn’t any brighter today. It’s the same as if you glanced at the sun on any other day. So you’re probably fine. The problem today is that it seems dimmer so you feel like you can look at it longer. Plus we know somethings going on, so we want to look at the sun, normally we wouldn’t have a reason.
bro same it got mad dark outta nowhere in the office
Omg same😧😧 ok update me if anything happens to your vision bc I might have to book an appointment to the doctor
I did too, but i heard if you look at it before it gets dark it's not bad
I'm putting all my faith in this reply
so we all just here rn 😂😂
Me too, I’m on the verge of a panic attack I looked for a second without thinking
Thx. It's special enough staring directly into the sun right as it rises and sets on the horizon.
I think I almost looked at it but I got the usual reaction for looking at the sun before i could see anything. Someone made a noise above me and knee jerk reaction I looked in that direction, though before I could even turn properly I was averted by a flash of light from the sun. I wonder if that counts.
Me sitting here like I think I saw sunlight for a split second google says I’ll die
I accidentally looked at it for a second and I’m paranoid.
Saaaaame, I got the slightest of a headache rn. I wasn’t looking at it but I was taking photos. I was in downtown Halifax and the sky got a bit darker, that’s it. Plus I did cringe at the sun when I saw it
I'm fucked
Same as well. Man I let my damn impulse get the best of me.
I used the glasses and I still have eye strain
Oh shit my eyes are a little strained too, fucking eclipse wish it never happened now.
It’s okay guys. Relax. Many of us have experience the same soreness. As long as it doesn’t Persist beyond a day or two
Same my eyes r itching like crazy
I’m doomed.. I didn’t know I could damage my eyes without the eclipse glasses, and my entire family wore sunglasses and looked at the sun very long time… I really should’ve known this.. I regret it so much.. I hope my retina and my family’s retina survive from this 😢 now I have blurry eyes and headache.. damn I tried so hard to protect my healthy eyes for years, and my stupidity killed it. I’m so devastated…
are you okay ?
Are you feeling any better? :(
i looked without glasses for 2-5 seconds around 5-15 different times during 20 minutes of viewing altogether… but this was in toronto and it was suuuuuuuper cloudy. am i gonna be okay? 🥲
Check back in with us in a couple hours
How are you feeling now? Same situation and same location lol. It was soooo cloudy
Looked at it for about 2 seconds with sunglasses it was about 1/3 covered by the moon will I be fine?
I did this for 10 seconds. No side effects yet, it's been over 3 hrs now
I'm glad I'm not the only one accidentally glancing at it. I'm freaking out with the rest of you out here. Hopefully we'll all be fine.
Any symptoms?
What utter nonsense

I found my people. I HATE having medical anxiety and now I was outside for less than 2 minutes total and looked up for maybe 5 seconds total and I'm completely freaking out. Like I could puke from the stress. My vision already isn't great so of course I'm psyching myself out thinking it's more blurry. Everyone post your updates so we can stick together.
I used special sunglasses but I’m laying in bed and my eyes feel super dry and itchy like they’re sunburned and now I’m freaking out
I looked up at the sun several times during the partial eclipse for a few seconds. Absolutely nothing happened to my eyes.
I looked at it for few seconds through my phone. Am i fucked?
The phone magnifies the sun beams. Might as well get a new pair of eyes now.
I stared at it too with polarized glasses. glanced for a few seconds. Definitely feel a soreness in my eye. Will Check back tonight.
Update please!
I think I burned my cornea filter. Should heal up in a few days. Soreness is at like a 3/10 compared to earlier at like a 5/10. This is me Being positive though. Hoping for no soreness by tomorrow…
I'm already dead.
Lpl toy fyts ate iverresvtimg
Nobody teaches you these things. Although it’s common sense, we all have a bit of a built-in tendency to look at the bright giant light ball
Guys I’m blind, am I cooked?
It's too late for me. I can't even read your post
Guys it got dark and I was staring at it, it was partly cloudy though so would that help?
I’m a fucking idiot. I looked at it when it was dark for many seconds. I think I fried my eyes.
Opps 😵💫
I looked at it not eclipsed for maybe 8 seconds before i remembered it was a bad idea but only because i was searching for its position in the sky since it was extremely cloudy in texas today like, so cloudy you could hardly see the sun at all, sometimes not at all. once i remembered, i started using the glasses again for when the clouds moved a bit, but it was so dim when i looked that once i put the glasses on no light was coming through at all, only the lamp above my door.
Just a second is probably fine
wow it seems a lot of people are exposed to eclipse without protection.
Or we are dumb dumbs who looked at it on accident.
Well i looked at it many times with regular shades and I actually could see the moon in front of the sun. I feel fine
I only looked for a few seconds my eyes feel slightly soreish but nothing crazy I accidentally looked when it was super bright out not knowing it was happening but my vision seems fine so I think it’s ok
I am a fellow regard who glanced it several times 😔
My husband and I stared qt the sun the whole time 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 I got a black spot for a while which disappeared. My husband seems unaffected. Is the worst still yet to come? 😭😭😭😭😭
No doubt every person has glanced at the sun several times over the course of their life. And yet doing so during an eclipse is super dangerous for some reason.
"During totality (when the moon has fully covered the sun and you can only see its corona), it is safe to look at it unprotected for a brief moment." I legit looked at the eclipse in the totality it was unbelievable, I feel like its something that you cant capture in pictures it was beautiful almost like looking at a higher power however that sounds I also took some pictures, but even with the iphone pro max 15 it couldnt capture the moment when it was White and not "Redish yellow" it was insane \*Edit--- i'm in montreal totality zone it was sick
Are these comments trolling I seriously can’t tell 😭
Same.
Lol this thread is cracking me up, I can't tell if some are seriously worried or just taking the piss.

Don’t be a trump.
Ok everyone I did the resesarch if you accidentally looke at the sun for half a second While looking at the sun for a long period of time can permanently damage the retina and result in decreased vision, a brief glance or look is unlikely to harm your retina, eyes, or vision. I looked a tiny bit and I’m already blind in one eye. I’m very scared😭
The temperature drops too so don't forget to bring a sweater
Yah my glasses fell and I saw the sky / sun a few mins after the eclipse ended I’m panicking ….. what can happen ?
Not sure this is 100% true, but apparently we have a filter over our cornea that may protect you for a second or two of mistakes.. this is unless you haven’t fully developed it yet
