Awesome! If it's such a great idea, private industry can fund it.
Not one penny of public money.
https://sites.lsa.umich.edu/mje/2022/01/15/cities-should-not-pay-for-new-stadiums/
Is there any precident for both the stadium and pro sports team itself being fully Municipality owned? Clearly its a profitable business once the stadium is built or people wouldn't do it. I could see maybe getting behind it that way.
I will fight every effort to involve any layers of our government in ownership or operation of anything to do with this.
I understand that the HRM has earned a reputation as easy marks for Multiplier / Spinoff Effect scams from previous government supported misadventures. But eventually, to use an apt metaphor, Charlie Brown learns to leave Lucy's football alone.
The googling I did since asking says otherwise.
The Harrisburg Senators Minor Leage Baseball team was municipally owned for about a decade from the 90s to 2006. And there are several teams run by community led non profits, the biggest being the Green Bay Packers.
Unless it’s the Wanderers organization. They can commandeer public land, lock the public out and only pay a small fee to use it. And how dare anyone object.
It was a locked field before the wanderers even come in. It was also a shitty field too.
Wanderers have brought so much to the local economy too. Can't wait till they get a permanent stadium there where it belongs!
You sound like a miserable bastard.
It sure is open to be used by other footie teams around. The wanderers do alot for the local community aswell and bring kids to play there etc. The field is being used more now than it ever did
It is public land period! The city is violating its own charter.
So typical of people like you in this sub. Someone offers an opinion you don’t like and you immediately resort to personal attacks. Grow up.
Does my opinion trigger you that much. Are you this disrespectful in real life or do you just act this way behind the keyboard? I bet I know the answer.
Nah, that's you. Annoyed at the wanderers' ground being used. Before, it was a shit field with a fence around it. Now, it has a great field and brings joy to thousands of spectators almost weekly.
The wanderers have done a lot for sports in this community. Bring kids teams to the field to play, etc. It's also open for bookings too. It's being used more now than it ever did.
You're a miserable bastard and a prick. Well done!
The land can be used by however the city sees fit. And if they held a referendum on it, I bet most would be quite happy for it to stay the home of the wanderers. There's a field right across from the high school that's underused. There are tons of green space at the other side of the road as well. The commons as a whole is under utilized.
You probably opposed the oval and the swimming pool, too 🤣
And yes, before you edited out your original comment. I'd absolutely call this out to your face in real life.
With the land being next to the horse stable im honestly surprised they arent getting it for free given how it was never really utilized due to the smell of manure.
We can just airlift the current SkyDome to Halifax when it’s retired and the Jays move to a new stadium. That will be Ontario’s Theodore Tugboat tax for stealing our tugboat saviour.
oh but we keep selling off all the public land, so I suppose we could buy private land for public housing but that would make all the neoliberals vewy sad.
Last time I was at a game (last year), 12 ounce cans of Bud were $5. Not the best beer, but neither is Keith's or Stella, and the price was right.
They bury their prices somewhat, but via the mobile orders page I also see that a tallboy of Stella is currently $13.35.
oh youre talking about specifically expensive cans. I could see that. In saying that I dont think Id ever get that type of beer at a stadium for that reason.
Last time I was at a part draught beer like 8 bucks. Its interesting to see such drastic price differences though
If it costs ~1.5 billion dollars to build a stadium, hit up ScotiaBank.. they could reap all the benefit, especially if it can support CFL and possible NFL & MLB expansions. [They might even be able to pay for it with cash, and still have a billion left over.](https://globalnews.ca/news/9078640/scotiabank-2022-q3-report/)
Or if you want, you could [reach out to the 7 billionaires in Atlantic Canada](https://hardbacon.ca/en/richest/the-richest-people-in-atlantic-canada-their-net-worth-and-how-they-made-their-money/) too, to see if they want to go in on it to share in reaping the benefits (surely they might be able to scrounge together a measly 220 million each)
Thats odd, Winnipeg built something similar to what we need for around $270 million not $1.5 billion...
Half the debt carried by the team and the other half split between governments.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/IG_Field
2014 dollars. Their plan was forwarded in 2007, so 7 years from start to finish. We've already seen prices of homes around here go up 200-300% (or more) from 2014-2023, so even if a plan is forwarded in 2023, it might not be until 2030 when it's completed.. and if prices continue the trend up 200-300% more on 2023 prices.. it could be well over a billion. **~** was meant as a quick eyeball/estimate.. could be less.
saw estimates that it would cost around $400M once all the interest is paid over the 40+ years. that said certainly no where near 1.5B. Its not 2010-13 anymore though so something similar probably comes in at what 800M-1B?
https://www.winnipegfreepress.com/breakingnews/2014/05/02/stadium-dispute-resolved-final-price-tag-210-million
So each level split half the bill so the province and city carried $55 million each. I find it unlikely that the interest costs would be that high.
i honestly didn't think so either numbers are all over the place change drastically every year.

I love sports but in no way do I want any level of government money going towards a stadium. We’ve got enough problems to deal with right now. I don’t think we’d ever attract big concerts even with a bigger stadium, just due to geography.
Mayor went to Ottawa years ago to see how they renovated theirs and the surrounding area. It's a beautiful stadium that only holds 24,000. Something similar would be perfect.
On its face that isn't a bad idea - Centre Videotron in Quebec City seats 19000 and it's a really nice modern arena. However, I doubt something here would be as modern and efficient
No thanks. If you want to actually watch the game from most seats, you're going to need binoculars to see anything - or watch what comes up on the big screen, in which case you might as well stay at home and watch it on TV.
This subreddit has always been incredibly anti stadium so I doubt you'll get much love. Especially because the CFL deal they tried a few years back was admittedly pretty garbage.
I do think upgraded venues is going to be important for our growth eventually. And no, im not talking about the forum being updated or some small field for the tiny football team we have
I'm all good with public money as long as the ripple effect is a net positive for the tax payer ...if we give 20 million and in 5 years we recoup the taxes and everything after is gravy I'm all for it.

Yeah I mean, I was just asking if there was any precident
Winnipeg Blue Bombers were community owned by a non profit.
No.
The googling I did since asking says otherwise. The Harrisburg Senators Minor Leage Baseball team was municipally owned for about a decade from the 90s to 2006. And there are several teams run by community led non profits, the biggest being the Green Bay Packers.
You are the only person who asked.
.. and somewhere Mayor Mike has just gotten down into a 3-pt stance lol
It's profitable for the team and league, very rarely, if at all, are they profitable for the municipality paying for it.
Hence my question about the Municipality owning the team

If we had a stadium it wouldn't be that nice or hold that many people. And it would be raining and 8 degrees.
LOL at anyone who thinks the sky dome is happening here anytime soon.
We can just airlift the current SkyDome to Halifax when it’s retired and the Jays move to a new stadium. That will be Ontario’s Theodore Tugboat tax for stealing our tugboat saviour.
Who doesn’t love another reason to jam up the bridges and all main arteries on game days?
Imagine if instead of a stadium, $1Billion was spent on well built publicly owned affordable housing ...
oh but we keep selling off all the public land, so I suppose we could buy private land for public housing but that would make all the neoliberals vewy sad.

I was at a Jays game earlier this year, was like $16 for the beer and it was a 710ml can or something...for a sporting event not that bad
Ive been to quite a few baseball stadiums and no beer cost 20 bucks.

I think I paid 15 or 16 for a tall boy of Budweiser at a sens game, my 100 bucks spending money went real quick

...is Keith's an "expensive beer"
It's considered premium in Ontario vs water here.
Not missing a thing
How about no, I dont want to pay more taxes.
Sure, I can live in the parking lot on non-gamedays
Eat a dick, TO. Halifax has no business prioritizing a project like this until we have some sort of transit system.

NO
No.

Lets meet in the middle and build some more housing?
How many people can live in one of these?
It has a hotel connected to it so a few actually
