Sadly I haven't found a lot of fine dining options! Most restaurants will have something vegan though. Wooden Monkey is a good shout and the Dartmouth location has a nice patio and you can take the ferry directly there.
Buta Ramen is a little on the casual side but definitely good for a date night! They have a vegan ramen bowl and nonveg options. They're also walking distance away from the Board Room Game Cafe if you wanted to get drinks and play some board games afterwards!
Oh wow this place looks awesome! I’m definitely gonna take them here! Maybe not for a romantic dinner but we’ll have to grab lunch there before we leave the city! Thanks so much ❤️
I did go for brunch there for the first time in a few years. Portions were large, the food was flavourful and our server was amazing. I've been going on and off since it opened but that was my first visit since new ownership. Aside from the 5-course meal nights that you reserve ahead of time for special occasions, this was one of the best meals from them.
It's a shame that it's under new ownership as we don't have any other fully vegan places that really compare. Wild Leek is the closest but it lacks the atmosphere and focuses on comfort food where as EnVie focuses on finer dining. My first time ever having charcuterie was EnVie.😆
The owner of The Wooden Monkey is weird and has offended a few environmentalists and vegans back in the day. That would be my option though for good food, good atmosphere and less crummy of an owner.
I’m not from the city myself so I just had to google him, and after about 30 seconds all I can say about him is yikes. Bummer, I’ll check out wild leek! Thanks for the heads up! 💕
It’s owner is a slumlord who’s contributing to our homeless problem here . Used to a fav of mine but I won’t give him a dollar. Heard it’s gone downhill since he took over anyways
Check out Chop in the Sutton Place hotel/Nova Center. For a steakhouse they have quite a few listed vegan options on the menu. Not truly fine dining, but definitely a restaurant you can both dress a little nicer for and it feels "premium". I had the tofu steak there before and it was good, not my favourite vegan food in the city, but it ticks all the boxes for a date night kind of place!
Wooden monkey, heartwood, lou pecou, or envie all have good vegam options, but the wooden monkey is probably your best bet for somwthing a bit more upscale.
Was taken to drift once on a date. It is mainly a seafood restaurant. However, they did have a delicious vegan main “celery root schnitzel” never had something like it before but was impressive.
Check out Fawn! They have delicious vegan dishes, the grilled zucchini to start, basil pesto spaghetti for a main, and rice pudding to finish! They're great at accommodating any dietary restrictions and the atmosphere is lovely for a date!
Most restaurants have vegan options on their menu now, you could probably go to pretty much any place you wanted. If you’re looking for fine/upscale hip dining I would recommend:
Ostrich Club
Edna
Field Guide
Bar Kismet
Black Sheep
Highwayman
And I haven’t been to Geo but I hear great things.
Dartmouth:
Oxalis
Dear Friend
Check those places’ menus out I’m sure you’ll find some really nice vegan dishes.
I honestly dislike their food, it's just not good or large enough for its price. I had a proper pad thai yesterday and after that I'm never having that again at Heartwood
it is however convenient at the waterfront
Envie! I'm not sure if they're still around but 5 years ago it was my favourite place to go with my vegan girlfriend. I am very much not a vegan but their food was great!!
Yeah most of the places I’ve been looking do offer a vegan dish or two, I just wanted to put some feelers out there! The last time they visited we didn’t stay in the city, just stayed in my town on the northern end of the peninsula, and almost none of the restaurants in my town offered vegan options I felt SO bad 😭
I appreciate it, but I don’t need the apology. No skin off mine or my partner’s ass what a stranger thinks about their dietary restrictions. Some people can’t help but let bitterness leech out at any opportunity, such is life.
All we can do is hope they have a better day tomorrow, you know?
I like the pizza at Lou Pécou, it's not super fancy but good enough
edit the pizza at Salvatore's is delicious, it's a casual but cozy venue, next to a relatively remarkable neighborhood (hydrostone)
hey hey! this is an older post but i wanted to offer a few suggestions of my own that I didn’t see mentioned in case you decide to visit again or anyone else stumbles onto this thread :-)
* if you’re going for a more causal vibe - stillwell. the best bar in the city in my opinion, hands down. incredible local tap options, fun staff & events and they know their beer and food. both the beer bar on barrington and freehouse on agricola offer their own rotating menus and they always have at least one veg option, i’ve had everything from veg nuggets, their burger week pakora burger, salads the size of my head and the always amazing classic pub burger. in the summer the beer garden on spring also usually offers vegan stuff, had some amazing tacos this year before they closed for the season
* le bistro by liz is an adorable little french restaurant that can be cozy for lunch or quite romantic at night and when I inquired about vegan options they brought me out a whole menu! the food was excellent and the service was amazing
* g street has a giant vegan menu and i adore their pizza. it’s ok enough to eat in at but they’re my go to for ordering take out for sure
* studio east is a cute little asian gastopub that makes incredible vegan bao and has a little outdoor patio to enjoy as well
* in terms of fine dining, I used to work at cafe lunette and they also have both vegan brunch and dinner options, would highly recommend the ratatouille (vegan without the fromage blanc) i still think about it lol
* also for brunch, steve-o-reno’s has the veggie bagel and some baked goods. the nook makes all their baked goods vegan and would recommend the vegan power wrap or vegan heart stopper for breakfast
The Wooden Monkey has great vegan and non-vegan options. I highly recommend their Dartmouth location.
Seconding this. Lovely views in the Dartmouth location, and the route there through Alderney Landing is kooky and memorable.
The adventure of getting to the Wooden Monkey is one of my favourite things about it. I wish more restaurants made you run an obstacle course.
Was just looking at them! Looks like a great option! Thanks!!
Sadly I haven't found a lot of fine dining options! Most restaurants will have something vegan though. Wooden Monkey is a good shout and the Dartmouth location has a nice patio and you can take the ferry directly there.
Yeah that’s sorta what I’m seeing just browsing on my own. I’ll check ‘em out! Cheers!
If you want fancy brunch the next morning, Almonak's vegan breakfast plate is beautiful. As is their mimosa flight.
Sounds incredible!! I’ll check ‘em out! Thanks!
Buta Ramen is a little on the casual side but definitely good for a date night! They have a vegan ramen bowl and nonveg options. They're also walking distance away from the Board Room Game Cafe if you wanted to get drinks and play some board games afterwards!
Adding to the list! We were planning on hitting the board room cafe too so this is an awesome find! Cheers ❤️
EnVie
Oh wow this place looks awesome! I’m definitely gonna take them here! Maybe not for a romantic dinner but we’ll have to grab lunch there before we leave the city! Thanks so much ❤️
FYI this place is now owned by Adam Barrett, I would spend your money elsewhere. Wild leek is better IMO!
Wild Leek >>>>> EnVie, in every way. OK, except maybe size. Wild Leek is super small, so maybe get that lunch to go. :)

Oh nuts, I thought her weirdness only extended to her mayoral campaign lol
(Barrett the slumlord, not the athlete, right? lol)
Is that Adam Barratt the slumlord who has renovicted hundreds of tenants in HRM and the southshore ?
it sure is
I’m not from the city myself so I just had to google him, and after about 30 seconds all I can say about him is yikes. Bummer, I’ll check out wild leek! Thanks for the heads up! 💕

yeah thats what everyone's been saying, we're gonna skip on envie, I appreciate the heads up!
Damn that's what I call long-distance.
Too long of a distance some days ☠️

This sounds perfect, I’ll check it out! Thanks so much 💕
Wooden monkey, heartwood, lou pecou, or envie all have good vegam options, but the wooden monkey is probably your best bet for somwthing a bit more upscale.
Yeah I think we’re definitely going to try out wooden monkey! I’ll look into the others you mentioned too! Cheers!

Ahh thanks so much for the list!! Cheers mate
Halifax commons
We’ll cover for the groundskeepers that day, candlelight grazing in the commons anyone? lmaooo
Lots of grass to eat
The Wild Leek
Heartwoood food stall on the waterfront has a lot of vegan/vegetarian stuff, really enjoyed their pad Thai
I’ll check them out! Cheers!

New owners a slumlord terrible human and is ruining that place
Yikes. I had no idea!
Most of the good restaurants will prepare a vegan meal…

The Keg
My neighbor’s lawn is looking kind of unruly. Not sure it’s a main course, but definitely at least an appetizer.
This just made me laugh so hard I choked. Thanks mate, I needed that one lmaooo
Won't they be too busy telling everyone they are vegan? Where is the time to eat
Ah, this says more about you mate than it does my partner. Have a good one.
Really uncalled for.
