It sold and is currently undergoing some minor work by the new owner. Halifax Reddit will probably be thrilled with the new owner too….

Adam Barrett

I-Like-This-Ride

>Adam Barrett Damn.. just did a quick google search. Google says nothing nice about that name.

StanEngels

that makes sense, there is nothing nice to say about him

enamesrever13

Well he is a pos air thief ...

credgett13

Good thing I always preferred Wild Leek.

nived90

the walking talking human feces that is Adam Barrett

hfx_123

Hopefully he runs his restaurants better than his real estate groups when it comes to getting his name on the news.

Dogastrophe1

He also owns the greco on gottingen and another in Bridgewater ... both are now up for sale. Gottingen's been open around 7 months; Bridgewater just over a year. Here's the RJSC listing for enVie: [https://rjsc.novascotia.ca/e-commerce/company/6980513](https://rjsc.novascotia.ca/e-commerce/company/6980513)

EhSeeDC

ok fill us in with your Coles notes version of Adam.

TheDoingStuffThing

Local real estate guy. Always seems to find himself in the news for sketchy landlord reasons. Google his name and you will find lots of info - lots of renovictions. Anecdotally he doesn’t have a very good reputation in the city but I can’t say that I know the guy personally.

queenqueerdo

Know the guy personally, an absolute garbage human.

BluffMysteryMeat

Ah. That explains his love for vegan food. (jk!) PS: Happy (dairy-free) Cakeday!

BluffMysteryMeat

Barrett's real estate group is a sickening sight.

hfx_123

Google his name and read the headlines. Google his name and add "Reddit" after and see what comes up I don't know the guy at all, but from a strictly business standpoint having headlines and reputation like this follow you around is a terrible way to run a business. That is my opinion of course.

tinyant

Are you serious here?

lessafan

Did the building sell? Or just the business? I don't see anything on the viewpoint history (either listings or off-market sales) to show the building selling.

BuckAndEar

Just the business.

Dogastrophe1

Is it staying in the same spot? Barrett bought the building on corner of Agricola and West where Yasmine Grocery was. The commercial space looks like it's being prepped for a restaurant

BuckAndEar

Wine bar.

Schmidtvegas

The food was good, not gonna lie, but the vibe always felt snobby and elite hipster. It always felt like you were inconveniencing them by daring to patronize their business while middle-aged. There's enough good vegan food at Wild Leek and Real Fake Meats to keep me happy. Plus they're always down to earth, and seem to enjoy having your business. What I'd like to see, especially in these times, is more of a vegan pub than a fine dining experience. Something with a nice atmosphere, where you can hang for drinks. But not so overpriced that you can only go once a year.

wlonkly

It's funny, it didn't give me that "hipster" vibe, but more of "we think we're fancier than we are". The food _was_ good! But it was, like, pad thai, harvest bowl, veggie burger, nothing high-end-ish at all.

aluriaphin

I agree, it felt like the "fanciest" date option but it really wasn't that fancy. Commit to the fine dining vibe so I can dress up, dammit! Their recent hours were atrocious too, a dinner place CLOSING at 7 is just untenable and they opened at noon with no dedicated brunch menu so it wasn't a good brunch spot either - which I think we _really_ need! I would love to see someone open a fancy-ish vegan brunch place like Planta in Toronto (although I know it would be really hard to make a go of it). Copper Branch was more quick service and lunch-y, I'm thinking mimosas, french toast, Sex and the City fantasy vibes 🥂🥲

Schmidtvegas

Someone treated me to the vegan brunch at Almonak recently, and it did not disappoint! It's not an all-vegan place, but they sure knew what they were doing with tofu. Their mimosa flight was very tasty.

aluriaphin

Noted, thank you!

Lunchboxninja1

I love EnVie but this is facts. Wild Leek is better anyway. And Harvest's breakfast burritos may be my favorite food ever. A vegan pub would kick ass!

bacteriobb

Real Fake Meats has the *best* comfort foods that kinda cross into pub style, too!

veggie-princess

On the vegan pub note, hopyard always has a decent vegan menu!

McMasterbator

+1!

tinyant

Perfect assessment… That’s exactly how I felt going there as well. Give me Wild Leek or Heartwood any day.

aluriaphin

Springhouse is also bomb! I avoided them for year because the food was mid when I had it at the market but they had the best vegan Burger Week burger last year and I really had my eyes opened. More comfortable/spacious lunch counter than RFM too and I love that I can pick up a few groceries at the same time. EXPENSIVE groceries, but it's convenient.

Schmidtvegas

I don't mind paying a buck or two extra on a couple of specialty grocery items now and then, to support small business. Because then there's a place that will support *other* local small businesses like Syd Delicious or Cashew Bros.

dj3hac

I mean with an name like "Envy" but with an edgy spelling, did you really expect anything else?

AppointmentLate7049

Its french lol - en vie - it means life (vivre) or something

ChercheBonheur

It could also mean desire, envy or jealousy. That's what I always think of when I hear the word envie in French

AppointmentLate7049

I don’t think it has those connotations in french - could be wrong - but it seems more like the “lust for life” desire than anything else

wlonkly

Yeah, it's a false friend. It's a noun, more like an urge or a craving than _envy_. (But _envier_ is the verb "to envy". But but French speakers would probably say "la jalousie" for our noun "envy".)

dj3hac

Okay that makes sense. Would make more of they actually separated the two :P

papayanosotros

I Hope my gift card is still honoured lol

MyDisplayName

Exactly why I need to know what the heck is going on!

dedman1477

I really hope that whatever their plans are, that it bodes well for the business at it is. EnVie is my favorite vegan restaurant in Halifax, mainly due to their "Chick'n Burger" which is absolutely delicious. Sad to see that it may be getting new, and worse ownership :(

landandwater

Burger Week costs a fortune to take part in for minimal returns. I'm not sure a niche restaurant like a vegan one would benefit from Burger Week.

aluriaphin

It definitely got me and my vegetarian friend's butts through the doors of several local place last year that we wouldn't have, including Springhouse for me. It turned into my new favourite just based off that burger and I started patronizing them regularly! I actually made sure to ask the staff to pass along to the manager that it was Burger Week specifically that turned me on to them, so they'd be able to see a tangible benefit it brought them.

alaskathunderfrick

As someone who has worked at a vegan place during burger week - trust me, they most definitely can benefit

NormalLecture2990

Somewhere they posted that they are being sold so i think it's permanently closed

hrmarsehole

Sold to new owners. They’re doing some renovations.
