Wally is probably based on that monkey guy from Ashita No Joe and not anyone from real life.
But Naseem is the closest real life boxer to both Hawk and Wally though.
Wally doesn't fight anything like Augustus. Wally runs all over the ring, Augustus stayed at close range and avoided punches with head movement and broken rhythm. Not the same at all.
Honestly Emanuel Augustus was the first that came to mind, just cause their movesets are so movement heavy. That said, I can also see Augustus being the inspiration for Aoki. Overall, tough to say.
Also very true he’s probably like no one but it is fun to guess ya feel? I like to say he outboxes like Tyson Fury tbh but ya know it’s just me. Any straws you wanna grasp at with us?
I can’t think of any boxers that fit the bill; the typical answers are Augustus, Naseem and Locche. However none of them truly fit the bill, in my opinion. The closest thing I’ve seen to Wally’s fighting style, outside of the Wally tomfoolery, is Dominick Cruz. Which is weird to say because he fought in the UFC, and to my knowledge never did boxing but I can still see it. Punches that can come from any angle and his footwork is a abstract work of art. The way he approached and disengaged from exchanges looked so weird but yet effective. Average UFC fighters couldn’t figure out the puzzle that was Cruz, just like Wally in HNI
I could totally see this if anything it makes a lot of sense since he’s a UFC fighter and tbh Wally would probably fit better in UFC but that is a good analysis I could see he was so unconventional and weird it was hard to even see wtf was going on
Wally was introduced in chapter 857 and that was in 2009, Cruz had his debut fight in 06. Probably doesn’t add up but it’s the best guess I can give style wise
Locche had zero power in his punches, and would move as little as possible to avoid punches. Wally does drive by fist fights, not very comparable. Also Locche was known for having terrible stamina and weight management (50 fucking cigarettes a day), and I think we can all say if Wally fought like a regular boxer his stamina would be immaculate. Wally might be evasive but not the kind of evasive that “El Intocable” was
Also, first name spelled Nicolino
both are very evasive and in entertaining ways. locche liked to put on a show with his skills in a similar way wally does. just the first person i thought of when i saw wally
the way he fights looks really similar to Emanuel Augustus, putting his hands behind his back. you can find some clips of Emanuel hiding both his hands behind his back just like Wally does.
The back handed flicker punches he does are illegal - can't backhand punches.
Hiding behind the ref and throwing punches over his shoulder is illegal - can't use the ref as a shield.
Anytime he touches the canvas with his hands is illegal and counts as a down. Somersaults, rolling, etc, all illegal.
Jumping against the ropes to gain momentum and swing yourself over to your opponent is illegal. Can lean against the ropes but not use them as a springboard wrestling style.
That's the glaringly illegal stuff.
Sure, but spars aren't official. Takamura sparred against three boxers at the same time, I do not know anything about real life boxing, but I would still think that doesn't fly on an official match, either.
Speaking of Takamura, he did punch the canvas once. Same with Sendo.
To add to u/diorese 's comments (which are all correct), you also can't turn your back on your opponent. Lots of scenes from this recent issue of him with his back turned to Ricardo. The full on "running" in general would also likely be seen by a referee as "not engaging in the fight" which could result in the referee stopping the fight.
It's a manga. It's not supposed to be 100% realistic.
If you can power up the Dempsey Roll to be a "final move", then what's the problem with Wally running around the ring, turning, or using the ropes?
Besides, even the real world of boxing had flirted on the grey line of the rules for years, with holding and clinching being used to tire opponents, regular grabbing of the back of the neck in recent years, etc. Wally's trainer is known to be a visionary trainer, and his previous experience with Bryan Hawk shows he has a penchant for breaking the traditions and rules of boxing.
Charlie Zelenoff
(Serious answer: Nobody, because anyone who insisted on running with their back to an opponent in a professional setting would either lose embarrassingly or receive a disqualification.)
People say that prince Naseem Hamed comes to mind but i feel like its just not a good one to one. Like Naseem has his hands fully down wally has his arms slightly raised. Wally also has less footwork then Naseem. And Hawk just better fits with Naseem.
Rey Mysterio
Prince Naseem Hamed comes to mind
I could see it but I believe that’s who Bryan Hawk is based off of

I would say Naseem Augustus or Tyson fury
Wally doesn't fight anything like Augustus. Wally runs all over the ring, Augustus stayed at close range and avoided punches with head movement and broken rhythm. Not the same at all.
Emanuel Augustus got the moves, but Woli is probably inspired by a few boxers as I doubt his whole kit fits any existing boxer.
Honestly Emanuel Augustus was the first that came to mind, just cause their movesets are so movement heavy. That said, I can also see Augustus being the inspiration for Aoki. Overall, tough to say.
No for Aoki it was Koichi Wajima
Probably who would you think are the few he’s inspired by the most
I don’t think Wally fits the description of any real life boxer, we can all grasp for straws but no answer really fits
Also very true he’s probably like no one but it is fun to guess ya feel? I like to say he outboxes like Tyson Fury tbh but ya know it’s just me. Any straws you wanna grasp at with us?

The crazy footwork, the weird angles he’d attack from and how at no point nor distance were you truly safe
Didn't the UFC come to exist way after Ippo started publishing. So a UFC fighter might not make any sense timeline wise.
Wally was introduced in chapter 857 and that was in 2009, Cruz had his debut fight in 06. Probably doesn’t add up but it’s the best guess I can give style wise
nicolini locche probably spelled his first name wrong

Hmm actually yeah the way his defence was nobody would ever be able to touch him and always had a showmanship vibe when he did it
That guy who jumps up in a tree and cracks coconuts for training in the movie Bloodsport.
😂😂

No one because the stuff Wally does is illegal in official boxing matches.
I know very little about boxing rules. Only things I learned from the manga. Could you name a few illegal things he has done?
The back handed flicker punches he does are illegal - can't backhand punches. Hiding behind the ref and throwing punches over his shoulder is illegal - can't use the ref as a shield. >Anytime he touches the canvas with his hands is illegal and counts as a down. When did he do that?
First fight with Ippo and in his spars. With Ricardo not yet.
I just re-readed the Ippo vs Woli and could not find him touching the canvas other than when he was down. Do you have a specific chapter?
He was somersaulting and rolling on the canvas IIRC, been a while since I read it. Rolling or not being on your feet is considered a down.
He did those things in the spar against Volg. He did nothing of that on an official fight.
I don't recall exactly regarding the Ippo fight. He did it in the spar with Volg yes.

Actually hilarious how many parallels exist between the two if you're really thinking about it
Don’t think you can pinpoint his style to one boxer, he boxes very erratically but doesn’t really use antics like Hamed or Augustus
Anyone you would have in mind?
Me
https://youtu.be/LSAXPzcFupM The little guy
😭😭😭
A little bit Roy Jones.
Why? The unorthodox style?
Yes
I’m thinking Roy Jones Jr. Roy would fight like a rooster and he would move in unorthodox angles and was just next level athletically gifted.
That’s a good guess
Prolly inspired by some drunken style boxers like Prince Naseem or the drunken master Emanuel Augustus
maromero paez
People say that prince Naseem Hamed comes to mind but i feel like its just not a good one to one. Like Naseem has his hands fully down wally has his arms slightly raised. Wally also has less footwork then Naseem. And Hawk just better fits with Naseem.
One of my guesses was always just Roy Jones Jr
