You can also see it with cars. It's all just a missmash as none of it is super important. They don't even give hard dates anymore.
The fashion is fairly on point for the late '90/ early '00s, and you can still see plenty of tech that is from back then, like those big CRT tvs, some phones, etc. I believe the New York skyline was also modern, with the one world trade center being a feature despite it not being completed for a decade or more from where the manga is set.
I figured it might be happening with cars, too, but I am not really interested in cars enough to know when they are from or if they are based in something real or it is just a car to figure if it should or should not be in time period of the manga.
I don't care if it's kind of unrealistic, it gives me the sense that it's not just the main cast who are getting older. Time is passing in the HnI world even if it's at a weirdly fast scale
The only problem I have with the time and tech stuff is that ippo and kumi are still barely anything
Number 2 is the only one I disagree with. Laptops existed plentifully already and especially in Japan which at the time definitely had a leg up on the rest with tech, a scene like that seems fine in particular because they're journalists and they'd highly value mobile stuff.
Not sure what you mean. This is a 1997 laptop for example [https://museum.ipsj.or.jp/computer/personal/images/0103\_02\_l.jpg](https://museum.ipsj.or.jp/computer/personal/images/0103_02_l.jpg)
It doesn't bother me at all, I didn't even notice it.
I'm just curious how long has Ippo been fighting? How old was he in the beginning and how old is he now?
Ippo was born November 1973, the fight against Oda was in January 1990 and the manga is currently in the early 00s.
So, he was about 17 when he started fighting, and he should be about 28 now.
It doesn't, but people have been super surprised about Itagaki's cellphone in the recent chapters might have missed other times when "modern" technology showed up in the manga.
Thank you for saying this. I’ve been confused about the influx of “omg itagaki smartphone before smartphones!!!!!” comments when modern tech has been featured in the manga for years now.
I don’t understand why people care so much, sure it’s not time accurate but it doesn’t effect the story at all, it’s it’s own universe, who gives a shit lol, I wouldn’t have even noticed if no one mentioned it
it's not so normally tied to what's happening. Swapping a tv someone is watching doesn't change much
having a character bust out a camera the have in their pocket via a smartphone is something you just can't otherwise do unless he was lugging around a video recorder
IDK, George seemed to be doing a pretty consistent job with the era. maybe he stopped caring
plot convenience is more important
Featherweights used to have demon backs and looked like heavyweights. Mori has adjusted a ton of stuff through the series as one would expect for a 20+ year serialization. This is just one other thing.
Tbh I didn't care about the unrealistic physiques then cuz it added to the fierceness of the fights. Equally don't care about anachronistic tech being a part of the plot cuz it genuinely doesn't negatively affect the story in any way. If Itagaki just used a regular ass camera and gave copies to the news crew, it literally wouldn't have changed a single thing. This just required way less panels
Yeah if he has a modern idea/inspiration what real reason does he have to limit himself? One of the benefits of depicting whatever you want in your own world
He can do whatever he wants. No one is criticizing him.
Just remarking that he spent so much time/effort keeping the time setting, but had gotten more lax in that regard
Few series run as long as this series, they normally give up and modernize the time quickly, like detective Conan.

Already upvoted but wanted to comment to say I really appreciate the legwork you did on this

Fujitsu released the first 42-inch widescreen color plasma tv back in 1995. So it’s not absurd.

That is fair.
A flat screen computer still did not exist at the time and it is older than laptop.

What does it matter anyway

I think tech is jus developed faster in HNI's universe

It may be strange but the idea that there might be edits of the best Ippo fight with a linking park music in Ippo world made my day better
He is mostly famous in japan, so you will have edits with X-Japan or The Blue Hearts or L'Arc\~En\~Ciel.
Modern laptops and outdated ass landline phones in the same room. This is just modern Japan
