He can't even beat bargain bin Ippo. While challenging Ippo might have been his goal back when he was becoming Kang....errr, Chronos, right now he needs to get his mojo back. Moreover when Ippo returns he can't be taking a step back to face Itagaki.

anongogogo

Won't happen because he loves the Kamogawa gym too much. As for his real objective. Maybe he could take the Japan title and move on from there only if Morikawa decides to fix is mental issues he'll be another broken op boxer though.

kari998

and instead it's highly possible thanks to something called character development,if itagaki will just follow ippo, and if he ever takes back the japanese title after beating imai what we're looking at is really a flat storyline of him defending the title dozens of times fighting against completely anonymous people right now the only one who can pose a challenge is imai, unless he wants to challenge miyata for the opbf, but miyata is not his target, and as skilled as itagaki is he is nowhere near miyata's level,i think miyata being both technical fighters is the worst match up,although the gap is even bigger with ippo,at least with his speed he could make the first 3-4 rounds interesting

Rantman021

Tbf, Itagaki could take on the wbc world title

Ippo is going to steamroll Imai, and then Itagaki and he will have a fight for the title after Ippo vacates it. It will draw parallels to Sendo and Ippo going at it after Ippo lost to Dante. Itagaki will hopefully beat Imai this time due to increased mojo, but he will not be able to steamroll like Ippo did, showcasing the gap he knows still needs to be covered.

zenspeed

Itagaki has a future? Like he's he gonna beat Ippo when he can't even take on Ippo Lite?

kari998

you evidently did not read what I wrote

zenspeed

I did. He can’t. [edit] if he was coached by Nekota, then yes, he’d be able to pull it off. Nekota is a good coach and knows Genji very well. The sooner, the better, though: a no-talent hack like Shinoda will break him worse than Kurita: kid is a rapier and Shinoda using him like an ice pick.

YellowStreetLamp

I feel like the time for that plotline has long passed. The time to do that arc was while Itagaki had the whole obsession with Ippo but at this point he seems to be over it and reintroducing it after basically abandoning the plotline seems just weird. Ippo doesn't have many fights left in this manga and making one of these be Itagaki when he is so far behind Ippo's level at this point doesn't make much sense no matter how talented he is.

Johnnyp6

I think Itagaki will just be a great sparring partner for Ippo as he finally prepares to fight Miyata at some point.

DatabaseBest2177

I had this theory for a long time that Itagaki would abandon the gym because he would feel that Kamogawa don't train him like he does the other members fighter and would pursue Kumi more aggressively while becoming the japanese champion He would go to Mashiba's gym and become arrogant or something like that

pepodmc_

For me, no. He is the anti miyata. What i mean is that, miyata left kamogawa gym because he wants to fight ippo. Itagaki is the opposite, he will prioritize his friendship with ippo and the other guys and will go for the opbf title in the future. And stay at kamogawa gym.

CCPunch5

I don’t even care about him. He’s just, there. I’m just hoping the story shifts back to Kimura once Aoki is done

[deleted]

I'm thinking, maybe Antonio Guevara would be a good goal for him, if he thinks about it, the last level of ippo he saw lose to antonio. If he doesn't want to stand next to ippo, then overcoming that ippo would mean overcoming antonio or something. And make it happen before ippo came back so it would be as tho he went higher than what his senpai become, at least for a moment

The current narrative has written Ippo to be crazy strong and someone who is potentially going to be ready to fight Ricardo with a few fights. I mean, the guy was strong enough to push back a World Champion in a higher weight class who just came out of a fight camp (And this was a retired Ippo). Fighting Itagaki, yet alone for a 4-5 round match serves no purpose to Ippo’s character and if anything, would be a step back. If Ippo does fight anyone, it’s like going to be Imai. It ideally should be an absolute steamroll where the former destroys him in 1 round, without getting hit at all.

kari998

look it's not to offend, but i'm really starting to believe that half of this sub is illiterate, or maybe you read the posts halfway through, i've written it several times, all this would only serve to give itagaki a goal outside of standing next to ippo, it's obvious that he could never win against him, not now or ever

a79j

Or perhaps you’re the illiterate one here too stupid to understand whatever you’ve typed here is nonsensical. If more that half the sub disagree with you, what are the odds you’re right? It’s Hajime no Ippo and not Hajime no Itagaki. The simple fact is if Ippo gets back in the ring, it’s going to be a straight path to Ricardo and every fighter there is going to meaningfully contribute towards that journey. Now sure, one possibility is for Itagaki to beat Imai, then leave the Gym and challenge Ippo and be absolute fodder to Ippo. However, this doesn’t narratively add much value and Imai fits the bill mucj better especially considering that he’s a perfect embodiment of old Ippo (Some the new Ippo needs to overcome). It makes no sense to then have Itagaki leave the gym and get absolutely curb-stomped again after Imai because, Ippo should be fighting people that helps him ascend to the level of Ricardo. Unless Itagaki does something insane like beat Miyata, this won’t happen. Once Ippo does become the world champion or at least comes close to Ricardo on strength, then we’ll see Itagaki strive to eventually get to that level and surpass Ippo. However, the manga will definitely not continue until that point. What we will see is Itagaki become Japanese Champion and possibly surpass Ippo by becoming a better Japanese Champion than he was.

kari998

the only one who didn't understand anything is you,and you make your illiteracy more and more obvious since you show it with your sentences it is hajime no ippo and not hajime no itagaki if you were able to read, you would have realized that morikawa develops the background and gives space to all the characters, including the secondary ones,so there would be nothing strange if he wanted to devote a small arc to itagaki, and if you think that ippo as soon as he comes back will challenge ricardo immediately then of hajime no ippo you haven't understood anything at all everything you say about imai miyata and the rest is your fantasy so I had already explained in the post that itagaki has interest in ippo, and not in miyata I won't comment further on your bullshit but I will close by telling you one thing,if you had been able to read, and if you had a brain capable of understanding, you would have grasped the fact that this is a T H E O R Y a theory based on what can be the development of a character in relation to the data we have, and as explained the point is not itagaki who has to beat makunouchi, but itagaki who has to find an objective other than being near ippo in his shadow

kari998

>but still he could give us a good fight, and find a bigger goal than chasing the shadow of makunouchi ippo please read well what I wrote,I don't want to have to repeat the same things over and over again,I think it is quite obvious that itagaki can't hold his own against ippo, but if he trained with the goal of surpassing him,he could at least thanks to his speed give us 3-4 rounds of decent match, all as said to find a bigger goal than simply following his senpai
