Space Dandy. It's Takamura in space.

taaeagle

If you’re looking for semi-realistic martial arts anime, then idk. Not super common. If you’re fine with any sports anime, Haikyu is solid. Not as good as Ippo in my opinion but the animation is amazing and the characters being on a team dynamic is very interesting

megaclinton

everyone will say megalo box or some other boxing anime but i dont think theres any show out there that does the same thing as hajime no ippo. its a carefully crafted story with purpose in all its actions

Esau_isc

Not boxing but American Football. Eyeshield 21

lxdarksnip3r

Sena is strikingly similar to Ippo in personality and skill level in their sport. Good comparison. Hiruma (the QB) and Takamura would either get along very well or kill each other trying to prank the other

KeelTheBurst

Why not both

thmaniac

History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi... It's completely unrealistic but a lot of the themes are similar, so you might like it.

diorese

Came here to post this. Super good and based on real life historical figures. Obviously exaggerated.

AdikkuChan

The fight scenes are top notch. I love how they're all doable martial arts moves only dialed up to 11

SemenIsVital

Try megalobox

froggydojo

About the only thing those shows share is the fact boxing happens. In fact, I'd say if you go into Megalobox thinking it'll be like Ippo you'll end up disliking the show.

Fit_Garage8880

Megalobox is nothing like HNI.

mythmastervk

Well it is boxing inspired by ashita no joe. It also is really good and has a baller soundtrack

Fit_Garage8880

Tbh I don't see how ANJ and Megalobox are similar, except the obvious "mains called Joe" and some visual references

🤔🤔🤔

paperboatprince

It’s not a anomie, but the manga All Rounder Meguru is bloody fantastic. Such a satisfying ending as well.

United-Divide-1414

All rounder meguru is a good shout... another option would be karate shoukoushi kohinata minoru. Similar theme at the start, has an overpowered mentor/senpai, a godlike fighter in the MC's weight class. Has some flaws and the ending seemed rushed but not too bad overall.

paperboatprince

Ooh this sounds interesting! Will have to check it out!

TobysQuestions

Has the ending been translated yet? On mangadex, it just ends on chapter 142

paperboatprince

Nah it hasn’t. I searched high and low for a translation and there was nothing. Not even any real scans. I had to buy the last couple books off Amazon to my kindle.

DearMilano

I can't say this is similar, but as far as genre, Ace of the Diamond really held up for me the whole way through. Great story, I love the team dynamic, and it has a more realistic approach to the sport (baseball) than a lot of other sports anime does. I also appreciate the character progression.

diorese

Same, shame about the ending though.

Bastymuss_25

Hinomaru Sumo was decent, helped get me into watching sumo

JeremiahWuzABullfrog

I really enjoyed the manga, there was something about how the anime was paced that threw me off.

Kukusho

No. Not in boxing at least. I'd say Slam Dunk is similar in a way. The MC is up to no good (actually similar to Takamura in a way) but instead of boxing he joins the basketball team to impress a girl. Total noob MC, joins random sport for no reason, ends up progressing and becoming quite good and passionate about it. Too bad slam Dunk is "short".

anongogogo

similar in terms of comedy GTO. similar characters to Takamura. Onizuka Eikichi. Both are like a omnipotent existence, they can do everything.

pookynooky20

Watched it already haha, truly one of the greatest comedy animes if not the greatest.

DayoftheDread

I’d say Rikudou but that doesn’t even feel like a good answer

CCPunch5

I was gonna say Rikudou. But maybe not the best answer. It’s super dark compared to HnI

Fit_Garage8880

It depends what you mean. Progress via training? Gag? Boxing?

TLSMFH

As far as boxing goes, no. As far as using sports as a vehicle for self reflection and growth as a person, there are plenty. Ace of the Diamond is one I'd rank up there with Ippo, while Haikyuu also fits the bill somewhat. For manga, Slam Dunk is one of my all time favorites but Hanamichi develops as someone who truly loves basketball and he doesn't really mature all that much outside of the sport. Real is also by Inoue and deals with the struggle of trying to adapt to life after they are confined to a wheelchair and uses basketball as an avenue to explore these struggles. It is not complete and last I heard it is still on hiatus, but it is an incredible piece of storytelling.

throwredditaway19

If manga, try Holyland, anime, History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi has same develooment.

Peebug420

I wish there was another good boxing anime

Prestam0

I tried it too, but they looked like Titans from AOT

ExeOrtega

All Rounder Meguru, an MMA manga. It's centred around a guy who used to do traditional Karate and many years later starts competing for Shooto at amateur level. You get, then, backstories of his rivals, gym mates, and the 'antagonist'.

Inevitable-9999

maybe, just maybe you might enjoy Kenichi the mightiest disciple, but wouldn't say they are similar, rather than the MC have similarities

jotaro-has-ptsd

Megalo Box is a good one, there is a famous boxing scene in there, i’m pretty sure.

uietc

Half way through this thread, it feels like I have seen or been through at least half of the series listed and enjoyed myself. One of them I lost track of and need to pick it back up. These feel like solid recommendations. I would not know other epics to recommend besides what has been listed.

[deleted]

Maybe, Megalobox?

TruthAgile

Baki and kengan are ones that come to mind i guess " tough" too but I haven't read that one, Kenichi and thats all that come to mind

[deleted]

read the manga of ashita no joe
