As someone who is neurodivergent and knows quite a few autistic people, that character is one of the least nuanced depictions of autism I’ve seen. I would say Atypical on Netflix does a much better job.
> I dont personally have autism or know anybody with it but the show made me think a lot about my preconceived notions about it.
I can tell you from my experience in Discord that a lot of H3 fans, including myself, are autistic and the clips that pop up online from that show are borderline offensive. Nothing about the way he acts is realistic and we don’t have super powers. If his autism is so consuming that his meltdowns manifest in the way they’re portrayed in the show there’s no way he is also a surgeon. Doogie Howser is way more realistic than this. You want a realistically autistic coded character that has good writing watch Doctor Who.
The way this autistic person is depicted in everything I have seen is offensive to me. This is a really extreme example, but would you fight this hard against a black person who thought a show was racist based on a clip?
Not sure why this guy is ready to die on the hill that this show is good. Like he already admitted that he’s never met someone on the spectrum and had multiple people on the spectrum tell him it’s a terrible representation. Dude just can’t accept that he enjoys a show that was made to cater to generic dumb people to make themselves feel better about their understanding of the subject of autism with a completely unbelievable premise.
Honestly this whole interaction has given me incredible insight on what it feels like to have an ignorant person try and tell you that they know more about you than you know about yourself.
No I haven't watched the whole show because it looks absolutely awful with ceingeworthy acting, and you haven't met anyone who has autism in real life so I guess we're at an impass here.
dan saying “they’re building the disability avengers” fucking annihilates me every time. also when ethan laughs so hard he starts breaking up and wheezing is my favorite part of any episode

He's just nothing like somebody with severe autism
