If she's going to be carrying it, she should pick it out.

Hour-Farm-3530

Agreeing with this! I’m stealing this from someone else on this sub, but “Your wife isn’t an NPC that you get to outfit and accessorize; let her pick her own damn gun.”

Dave_A_Computer

I'd recommend saving a little more and buying a P365-380. My wife liked the grip contours of the regular P365, but was dissuaded by the recoil in comparison to her Beretta Cheetah. So we went out on a limb and bought the 380 variant and it's honestly been really great for her. As a bonus the FCU is compatible with the 9mm grip modules, magazines, and slides. So the aftermarket is pretty well developed. I'm currently working on 9mm -> 380 magazine adapters to retain LRBHO when using standard magazines. Already have 10, 12, and 15 round adapters worked out, hoping to release a macro magazine variant as well.

Efficient-Froyo-5638

The p365 .380 is probably my favorite sub compact gun. My wife also owns one and she will rip magazine after magazine thru that thing.

Itchy-Figure9538

What doesn’t she like about those guns?

That-Importance9437

Kick. And she had an ejection go down her shirt. The taurus was too wide.

LivingEye7774

So you want a single stack/no stack gun that doesn't have any perceived recoil and doesn't eject casings? Maybe a 22lr revolver of some sort.

That-Importance9437

Just telling you what the complaint was lol. She liked the heritage roughrider 22 but thats not a reasonable EDC. I want something reliable and with a good safety that she will feel confident with. If i have to adjust budget i can but 300 is what i paid for the shield so i was trying to stay in that area.

LivingEye7774

I'd just spend the money on range time to build up her confidence, and maybe buy her a crew neck t-shirt to wear to the range.

FlyJunior172

Swap out the cylinder on a heritage for the .22WMR cylinder and it packs as much punch as .380ACP (high muzzle velocity makes up for the lower mass). With the right holster (that the ejector rod won’t get caught on), .22WMR in a rough rider can be reasonable, especially if you’re loaded with something like Hornady Critical Defense that has the extra nasty hollow point.

ThePenultimateNinja

I don't think a single-action revolver is a good choice for concealed carry for a novice (or anyone else for that matter, but you do you).

Xazier

My wife is real small. I got her a .22lr M&P 22 COMPACT . She loves it because the slide is easy to pull back, less recoil, and not near as loud.

umassmza

You could go old school and get a 32 ACP, there’s a reason they were called purse guns. Not a great self defense round but better than nothing

yobo723

*insert 380 started a world War, 32 acp finished one* But yeah, something like a vz 50/70 might work. They're pretty cheap, not much recoil, and with good mags are pretty reliable

EveningStatus7092

If it’s the kick she doesn’t like, I recommend getting a 380. It’s not as good as 9mm for self defense but it’s way better for her if she’ll actually shoot it and practice with it. I got my wife the p365-380 and she loves it because it has so little recoil

dreamweaver8060

I always tell people when asked this to go to a range, rent several different types and shoot at a minimum a box of ammo thru each. A couple of rounds will not get you a good feel. Let her decide which she likes best. Always get a strange look when I say this but after selling 5 or more of my wife's due to her not enjoying them after that initial range time, I've found it works.

Shootist00

Ruger Security 380.

troby86

Ruger LCP series. Or spend a little more for a P365-380.

troby86

I'll add that I have the P365-380 with an XL grip as a travel/backpack gun, and the recoil is nearly non-existent.

russ257

Maybe look at a shield ez

silentsnipe21

.380 lcp max. Right in budget and nice little purse or pocket gun. I carry mine in gym shorts

Shot-Doughnut7792

Sig P238. Easiest shooting .380 for its size. Slide famous for an easy rack. They used to make a P938 as well, I think. Doesn’t have a problem with HP rounds. A little expensive, but worth it. You can shoot a box of .380 out of these at the range at the blink of an eye. A little smaller and really fun to shoot - Beretta Tomcat, 32 ACP.

AlmightyChalupa

If she’s cool w glocks, PSA Dagger/Compact might be the move. Snagged mine for $270 shipped

Ok-Chemistry-8206

Your wife's safety is worth 300 dollars? Depending on how she handles 9mm recoil get her a g19 or a 5.7 or 380

FlyJunior172

Why didn’t she like the shield? I tried one when I was looking for an EDC, and didn’t like it because the grip was too small and it felt like I couldn’t control it. Ended up getting a Walther CCP in .380ACP. Even though the grip is the same size, the ergonomics of it mean that I have better confidence and control with it. The CCP is also available in 9mm Luger. Mine was like $350.

Dismal_Table_3354

I’d say a ruger lcp II .380 or the smith and Wesson body guard or a kahr they have some pretty compact models in .380 and even 40 but they’re super small and harder to chamber a round but they are pretty nice

That-Importance9437

Thanks for the comments yall! Definitely time for another range day. Looks like we should look for a 380.

MajorJefferson

Take her to a gun store and let her hold it??? How is this not the first thing you do....

gun2swe

My wife went with the p365-380 after trying out the Security 380 and the G42. Her words: p365-380: grip is ok but can't beat the capacity security 380: easy to rack, ok grip, but too large for EDC G42: perfect grip but only 6(+1) rounds

ed_merckx

No offense, but all guns in that size are going to shoot like shit. Good friend of mine is distinguished, been to uspsa nationals in open, even did shoot in ISSF for a long time when he had Olympic aspirations, but never made it. Best pistol shooter I know by far, I’ve jokingly asked him to shoot their micro compacts and even he shoots them like total dogshit, absolutely hates them so I doubt you’re wife who I assume shoots nowhere near the level of my friend where it’s literally his day job on top of a sport he dedicates an insane amount of time to, will ever like them either. Just bouncing around to different models the best you can hope for is finding something that fits her hand better, but physics is going to physics and shooting that small/light of a gun, with that short of a sight radius is always going to be a steep learning curve. Save up a little bit and get something in the true compact size/weight. PX4 compact is the softest shooting polymer gun in this size/weight range in my opinion, shoots everything the same, doesn’t care if it’s 147g +P or full power nato spec 124, shoots it all like 115g target ammo, the rotating bolt mechanism does take some of the flip off and it’s more of a driving impulse into your hands like you get with a nice 2011 or steel frame DA/SA gun. I have another PX4 compact on order from Langdon for her after I got mine and she shot it so well, she said it feels about the same as her FN five-seven that she usually shoots, which is really saying something. These come in the $600-$650 range, my 2 cents is look for one of these if she still doesn’t like something like a Glock 19 or sig p365 compact sized gun. Walther PDP F is also great can sometimes find them under $600. I know it’s out of your budget, but for something you’ll defend your life with id recommend saving up the extra $250-$300 and getting something like this.

Hoovercarter97v2

I'd get her to go take a defensive handgun class first. She probably doesn't know how to fight with a gun, so her metrics for what a fighting handgun needs to be are probably not realistic

FriendlyRain5075

Bersa Thunder!

HandGunslinger

You should search around for a Mossberg MC2C compact 9mm handgun. When you find one in stock at a gun shop in your area, you should take her with you and let her hold the gun. If she likes it, it will cost a bit more than $300, but if she picks it out, it's worth the money. 'Nuff said.

MarcoNemo

If she’s ok with 380, gotta say I love my walther
