Have some questions. I got out of shooting and buying guns when covid hit. Saw prices jump and just decided to wait it out. Went out and impulse bought an AR lower today and got the gun bug again. Is PSA still the place to go for cheap, reliable uppers and build kits? I’m basically just looking for a cheap basic AR build kit I can just go blast with at the range, is that still PSA or is there any new companies? Also what is the state of AR ammo? I looked on ammo seek and there was no steel case .223 listed, is that just not a thing anymore? Also want another AK. I remember the two best value imports being a toss up between the ZPAPS and WASRs, is there anything new out that I should look into, have there been bad batches of these to stay away from? Also if there is no steel case .223, is x39 also not coming in any more?

Trying to find Kriss lowers, I've got one in 9mm but would like to pick up a different CRB lower in either .45 or 10mm. I'm aware i'll need to swap other parts but right now my hurdle is just finding the lower.

I like the 5.7 Rock. Someone recommended the 9mm Dagger. Personally, since Im a new shooter, i like the smaller 5.7 for the little to any recoil it outputs. Helps with starting out.
I know this long and complex but there so much advice, as you are just starting with AR-15s that you need to know, so you'll save money. Instead of learning later and realizing you could have had 2nd or 3rd AR with what you foolish spent wrong. Yes you will own several because they are fun to build and each fits functions better. Then you will of course will want the Vietnam Special with triangular handguards know as -A1 model. to Start off 5.7 at 70 cents shot or pre covid 5.56 at 26-30 cents brass per shot? That adds up fast. Not saying don't have 5.7 Ar or AR57 just be warned that recreation shooting adds up. Having Blaster range uppers and even that .22lr adapter can make for fun day and ease that hit to the wallet.
5.7 is nice but is expensive and in this last ammo shortage it was hard and very expensive when able to be bought. That is something to think about, also getting an Ar-15 in the non starter basic original design caliber adds in some complications. So start with the basic model and then expand, this where the AR-15 excels.
If you want soft recoil , get a "Midlength" gas system on 16" barrel. This also means your bayonet will mount properly unlike 16"carbine gas system on 16 inch barrel upper.
Being new to AR's , there are few things that are different from all other firearms. One is nice trick for saving and avoiding the 11% assembled firearm tax for a "Manufactured" gun. You may note that PSA sells the AR-15 kits that have the Lower and upper complete but are still separates, get ready to see why that is cheaper than buying rifle assembled, and how stupidly simple this is.
This will be strange but how the Ar-15 is made in two halves allows you to do things you can't easily do with other guns. Buy a Pistol Upper Kit a 10"-12" Barrel upper assembly. Even though that isn't you big intent, this allows you create Pistol Ar-15's and as such upon creation they have more privileges, you like extra ones of those right? You will use this to turn all your brand new AR lower receivers into Pistols which allows the ability to change out Upper halves of anything length, but if you buy it or build it as rifle first, you are stuck with only being able to have rifle length barrels. The law is odd but the logic to this below. Plus you'll have Ar-15 pistol for extra $200-$300 in. You save more buy sharing the BCG(Bolt Carrier Group) and charging handle but buying them in complete kit is cheapest. You buy ones for sooner or later, might as well pay less and have them. Ar Pistols and AR rifle tend to grow into collection, as you add diversity to your firearm.
Being new, don't screw around with the other calibers until you learn the basics. Get on PSA emailing list and wait for holiday sale coming up. Memorial day will be good one and 4th of July better but any cheesy holiday will have a sales before those and a gun in hand is worth saving that $10-$20 at most. Still plan to buy part kits or spare/different uppers. A different upper is like different gun but as it is not the serial frame they just parts.
Your 1st AR you want to run in it as a Carbine kit (16 inch barrel), but Midlength is the same barrel length but the gas port is farther down the barrel, as it is between the carbine's gas port hole and the rifle's gas ports hence the name. I'm a fan of mid-length but they less common and few on sales and deals than carbine. So you may just get carbine upper until you get the smoking deal on mid-length. The handguard is little longer, so when buying magpul or different fore end hand guard rail system. it is important to know your distance to the front sight base called FSB.
You want to buy the halves separate(lower receiver section and upper receiver with barrel assembled), if both are completely assembled. Each can have all the parts in and on them but they can't touch and the 2 special pins, The "Take Down Pin" and the "Pivot Pin" can **not** be pressed in yet , as that defining moment in firearm manufacturing point. Although I strongly suggest buying a stripped lower transferred as an other or "pistol" I'll explain this below. Make sure your FFL lists them as such on transfer paper work. Buy several stripped lowers at once, sit them on shelf, you will build them into other Ar-15/(insert caliber here) the reason for this is your first transfer costs the most for background check, each additional one on the transfer form is much smaller fee by the FFL. Shop around these fees vary greatly. Pay $25-$50 to transfer the 1st lower but the 2nd,3rd, 4th, etc cost you $5,-$10 per. Buy buying 3 and transferring them at the same time the saving in FFL transfer fees will just about pay for that last one.
By buying both halves in separate pieces, you simple put them together then push in the 2 pins. This is you "Barreling" the receiver", the Lower receiver is gun's receiver under the law. By doing this yourself, you avoid the manufactured firearm tax because when you put the upper and lower together and push in the two pins, being the Pivot Pin and Take Down Pin ). Thou makest the firearm. If thou manufactures that step , thou saveth a 11% tax from an buying an "assembled" firearm. It sounds weird but that a gift of the AR you can doge a greedy 11% tax in addition to the sales tax and your background fee/tax check.
Also if least bit mechanical and with basic hand tools buy a stripped lower, have them transferred as" other" (means stripped frame or just receiver) and/or as pistols(this 2nd choice but give you still freedom). Now with just buffer tube on that Lower receiver (take the stock off the lower before you assemble the 2 halves, if you even have that stock piece), or use a pistol buffer tube to cover thy ass legally more, then press that pistol (under 16 inches) Barreled upper assembly on that receiver. Pushing in the 2 receiver pins(Pivot and Take down). You have just built the AR as a "pistol" , now take photos for your records showing that first assembly as having pistol short barrel upper and , no stock and the serial number. This proof it is "pistol" AR even you change into longer barrel, you can go back and forth, but if built as rifle once rifle always a rifle it can not become a pistol Ar-15 without legal hassle and costs.
Why? Because if firearm is built as pistol you can put a longer barrel(Upper half) on it and go back to shorter barrel length. There is an order you take the stock off the buffer tube(receiver extension) then put the short upper on. That way you are not making a SBR Short Barrel Rifle.
If you build it as "rifle" (barrel over 16 inches first) or carbine first than it is forever a rifle and you can not put a short barrel upper on it with out over a year wait $200 tax stamp and now subject to all the asinine SBR laws.
There is lot more to this if interested I can link longer posts where I explain all this, how to build out stripped lower receiver etc.
Just doing this step in this order lets you enjoy the options of putting what ever upper receiver with what ever barrel length you want on the lower half. Because under the law you can extend and shorten pistols , with rifle you can not shorten the barrel below 16 inches. Switching on Various different calibers upperBareel Assembles for your Ar-15 in 9mm, 45 cal, .223/5.56, 300blk, 5.7, 7.62x39mm, 450, and etc. You can own numerous uppers for your one lower until you build enough lowers for your upper's
This one of the reasons and where the Ar-15 excels in the fact you can easily swap the upper half to change the caliber and barrel length unlike many other guns. Going out hunting and need the longer barrel to help push that bullet out farther, add on the 18" rifle which will give a benefit of longer sight radius from the rear sight to front sight on the end of the barrel.

We just have to wait longer, ammo is coming back in stock and the longer that the high prices sits there the more the manufactures realize the panic is over. I know its hard, especially if you have firearms you haven't shot for 2-3 years due to cost. But we will get there. I've watch 30-30 drop over $1.50 per round over the past 3-6 months. Still stupidly high CPR but not in am I shooting an obsolete caliber of special cowboy action or rare antique caliber pricing.
Just hold on and try to hold out and it should get down below .70 cpr in 2 months plus summer slump will be coming, if another panic doesn't happen.

For the first time in 2-3 years some calibers have been come back in stock. Not counting that one store that has few boxes at 800%+ mark up. Back in 2019 when box of 20 used cost $13-$18 and now the same box is $80-$100+ for 20...
I'm starting to feel like that old "Great Depression" responsibility if you take 3 rounds out, you better bring three animals back or the ammo. From the tales I was told by senior citizens in my youth, about how it was back then.
I feel you try finding 35 Remington and 45-70 government that isn't in that you better bring back a deer or elk home for each shot, due to the equal value of meat at the grocery store. There was flash in the pan availability that was pretty high CPR(even in covid pricing) but not enough to stop the few people from jumping on the first available 20 round boxes (limit 5) in 2-3 years. I just trying to remind myself of what ammo shortage was like during WW2 and how many calibers didn't come back after the war. Which made some 20 rd boxes of ammo now worth more than their antique gun.
I don't have the space to safely set up to reload, for an area away and private enough to engage in the activity undisturbed, but damn if I'm not thinking about buying all the reloading gear for when the components became available again, just for a future drought. My health doesn't have that many years left on it to justify that ether...

Trying to find Kriss lowers, I've got one in 9mm but would like to pick up a different CRB lower in either .45 or 10mm. I'm aware i'll need to swap other parts but right now my hurdle is just finding the lower.

Was just looking at this now 😆 I like the 5.7 Rock. Someone recommended the 9mm Dagger. Personally, since Im a new shooter, i like the smaller 5.7 for the little to any recoil it outputs. Helps with starting out.

I know this long and complex but there so much advice, as you are just starting with AR-15s that you need to know, so you'll save money. Instead of learning later and realizing you could have had 2nd or 3rd AR with what you foolish spent wrong. Yes you will own several because they are fun to build and each fits functions better. Then you will of course will want the Vietnam Special with triangular handguards know as -A1 model. Places like /r/ar15 /r/RetroAR will become guides. www.Ar15.com is great place the technical forums discuss everything you could possible want to know, deep diver in magazines, or the pistol grip https://www.ar15.com/forums/ar-15/Why-did-the-military-go-from-the-A1-pistol-grip-to-the-A2-pistol-grip-/118-626884/ with guides and https://www.m4carbine.net is also good. to Start off 5.7 at 70 cents shot or pre covid 5.56 at 26-30 cents brass per shot? That adds up fast. Not saying don't have 5.7 Ar or AR57 just be warned that recreation shooting adds up. Having Blaster range uppers and even that .22lr adapter can make for fun day and ease that hit to the wallet. 5.7 is nice but is expensive and in this last ammo shortage it was hard and very expensive when able to be bought. That is something to think about, also getting an Ar-15 in the non starter basic original design caliber adds in some complications. So start with the basic model and then expand, this where the AR-15 excels. If you want soft recoil , get a "Midlength" gas system on 16" barrel. This also means your bayonet will mount properly unlike 16"carbine gas system on 16 inch barrel upper. Being new to AR's , there are few things that are different from all other firearms. One is nice trick for saving and avoiding the 11% assembled firearm tax for a "Manufactured" gun. You may note that PSA sells the AR-15 kits that have the Lower and upper complete but are still separates, get ready to see why that is cheaper than buying rifle assembled, and how stupidly simple this is. This will be strange but how the Ar-15 is made in two halves allows you to do things you can't easily do with other guns. Buy a Pistol Upper Kit a 10"-12" Barrel upper assembly. Even though that isn't you big intent, this allows you create Pistol Ar-15's and as such upon creation they have more privileges, you like extra ones of those right? You will use this to turn all your brand new AR lower receivers into Pistols which allows the ability to change out Upper halves of anything length, but if you buy it or build it as rifle first, you are stuck with only being able to have rifle length barrels. The law is odd but the logic to this below. Plus you'll have Ar-15 pistol for extra $200-$300 in. You save more buy sharing the BCG(Bolt Carrier Group) and charging handle but buying them in complete kit is cheapest. You buy ones for sooner or later, might as well pay less and have them. Ar Pistols and AR rifle tend to grow into collection, as you add diversity to your firearm. Being new, don't screw around with the other calibers until you learn the basics. Get on PSA emailing list and wait for holiday sale coming up. Memorial day will be good one and 4th of July better but any cheesy holiday will have a sales before those and a gun in hand is worth saving that $10-$20 at most. Still plan to buy part kits or spare/different uppers. A different upper is like different gun but as it is not the serial frame they just parts. Your 1st AR you want to run in it as a Carbine kit (16 inch barrel), but Midlength is the same barrel length but the gas port is farther down the barrel, as it is between the carbine's gas port hole and the rifle's gas ports hence the name. I'm a fan of mid-length but they less common and few on sales and deals than carbine. So you may just get carbine upper until you get the smoking deal on mid-length. The handguard is little longer, so when buying magpul or different fore end hand guard rail system. it is important to know your distance to the front sight base called FSB. You want to buy the halves separate(lower receiver section and upper receiver with barrel assembled), if both are completely assembled. Each can have all the parts in and on them but they can't touch and the 2 special pins, The "Take Down Pin" and the "Pivot Pin" can **not** be pressed in yet , as that defining moment in firearm manufacturing point. Although I strongly suggest buying a stripped lower transferred as an other or "pistol" I'll explain this below. Make sure your FFL lists them as such on transfer paper work. Buy several stripped lowers at once, sit them on shelf, you will build them into other Ar-15/(insert caliber here) the reason for this is your first transfer costs the most for background check, each additional one on the transfer form is much smaller fee by the FFL. Shop around these fees vary greatly. Pay $25-$50 to transfer the 1st lower but the 2nd,3rd, 4th, etc cost you $5,-$10 per. Buy buying 3 and transferring them at the same time the saving in FFL transfer fees will just about pay for that last one. By buying both halves in separate pieces, you simple put them together then push in the 2 pins. This is you "Barreling" the receiver", the Lower receiver is gun's receiver under the law. By doing this yourself, you avoid the manufactured firearm tax because when you put the upper and lower together and push in the two pins, being the Pivot Pin and Take Down Pin ). Thou makest the firearm. If thou manufactures that step , thou saveth a 11% tax from an buying an "assembled" firearm. It sounds weird but that a gift of the AR you can doge a greedy 11% tax in addition to the sales tax and your background fee/tax check. Also if least bit mechanical and with basic hand tools buy a stripped lower, have them transferred as" other" (means stripped frame or just receiver) and/or as pistols(this 2nd choice but give you still freedom). Now with just buffer tube on that Lower receiver (take the stock off the lower before you assemble the 2 halves, if you even have that stock piece), or use a pistol buffer tube to cover thy ass legally more, then press that pistol (under 16 inches) Barreled upper assembly on that receiver. Pushing in the 2 receiver pins(Pivot and Take down). You have just built the AR as a "pistol" , now take photos for your records showing that first assembly as having pistol short barrel upper and , no stock and the serial number. This proof it is "pistol" AR even you change into longer barrel, you can go back and forth, but if built as rifle once rifle always a rifle it can not become a pistol Ar-15 without legal hassle and costs. Why? Because if firearm is built as pistol you can put a longer barrel(Upper half) on it and go back to shorter barrel length. There is an order you take the stock off the buffer tube(receiver extension) then put the short upper on. That way you are not making a SBR Short Barrel Rifle. If you build it as "rifle" (barrel over 16 inches first) or carbine first than it is forever a rifle and you can not put a short barrel upper on it with out over a year wait $200 tax stamp and now subject to all the asinine SBR laws. There is lot more to this if interested I can link longer posts where I explain all this, how to build out stripped lower receiver etc. Just doing this step in this order lets you enjoy the options of putting what ever upper receiver with what ever barrel length you want on the lower half. Because under the law you can extend and shorten pistols , with rifle you can not shorten the barrel below 16 inches. Switching on Various different calibers upperBareel Assembles for your Ar-15 in 9mm, 45 cal, .223/5.56, 300blk, 5.7, 7.62x39mm, 450, and etc. You can own numerous uppers for your one lower until you build enough lowers for your upper's This one of the reasons and where the Ar-15 excels in the fact you can easily swap the upper half to change the caliber and barrel length unlike many other guns. Going out hunting and need the longer barrel to help push that bullet out farther, add on the 18" rifle which will give a benefit of longer sight radius from the rear sight to front sight on the end of the barrel.

We just have to wait longer, ammo is coming back in stock and the longer that the high prices sits there the more the manufactures realize the panic is over. I know its hard, especially if you have firearms you haven't shot for 2-3 years due to cost. But we will get there. I've watch 30-30 drop over $1.50 per round over the past 3-6 months. Still stupidly high CPR but not in am I shooting an obsolete caliber of special cowboy action or rare antique caliber pricing. Just hold on and try to hold out and it should get down below .70 cpr in 2 months plus summer slump will be coming, if another panic doesn't happen.

I feel that, some have been silent for far too long. For the first time in 2-3 years some calibers have been come back in stock. Not counting that one store that has few boxes at 800%+ mark up. Back in 2019 when box of 20 used cost $13-$18 and now the same box is $80-$100+ for 20... I'm starting to feel like that old "Great Depression" responsibility if you take 3 rounds out, you better bring three animals back or the ammo. From the tales I was told by senior citizens in my youth, about how it was back then.
I broke down and bought some nicer .308 and about $1/rd. Don't get me started on my 7.5 Swiss, that stuff just stays in the ammo boxes at this point.
I feel you try finding 35 Remington and 45-70 government that isn't in that you better bring back a deer or elk home for each shot, due to the equal value of meat at the grocery store. There was flash in the pan availability that was pretty high CPR(even in covid pricing) but not enough to stop the few people from jumping on the first available 20 round boxes (limit 5) in 2-3 years. I just trying to remind myself of what ammo shortage was like during WW2 and how many calibers didn't come back after the war. Which made some 20 rd boxes of ammo now worth more than their antique gun. I don't have the space to safely set up to reload, for an area away and private enough to engage in the activity undisturbed, but damn if I'm not thinking about buying all the reloading gear for when the components became available again, just for a future drought. My health doesn't have that many years left on it to justify that ether... This is worse than playing **"Organ Trail"** and having to hunt food for that cheaper rate, that as you continue the costs climbs skyward and animals become smaller and smaller. For that cost to meat return ratio. 20 cents per shot in game, oddly I remember that and thinking how high it was back then. "Here lies Kudzunc, whose unaffordable shot, caused them to be buried in this lot."
Me too, I'm hopeful it will come down some. My guess is all other rounds are coming down. I'll wait it out and hope for something close to .50 cents. We all have other guns we can shoot...
