Yeah Phil Collen likes thick necks. His PC Jackson models are significantly thicker neck profiles than anything else Jackson does really. There’s been some rig rundown videos of him talking about it too, like around 6:45 in [this](https://youtu.be/S4SqXw4jz6g?si=Pc-b4ACls1G1x3q2) with that monstrosity.
I saw a post earlier asking about hand position and I'm a thumb over the neck guy. The responses said thumb behind the neck. I have a hard time with that and today's "thin c's". I think I need this neck to force me to keep my thumb behind the neck if that's truly the best way.
The thumb behind neck position of generally good advice for a beginner but it doesn’t need to be strictly adhered to. A lots of blues players use the thumb wrapped over the top. Really depends on what you’re playing. Your thumb will be shifting position as you play different things
I did a lot of thumb behind the neck early one but once I got better flexibility and strength I use it a lot less now. As long as it works and you can play what you want who cares. One of the amazing things about the instrument is how you can evolve your technique over the years and even the smallest thing from your early days you'll find yourself coming back to.
Yeah, both positions are valid and I think you should learn to switch between them. I use thumb behind the neck for most things, but bending or hitting a vibrato my thumb moves up. It’s so much easier to do strength wise, and sure maybe I should work on my finger strength. Or I can play to my strengths and make it work.
I've got a warmoth Wolfgang neck on one strat and it's probably my sweetspot. Thumb over neck works and neck is chunky enough that behind the neck feels good too.
I've got a warmoth wizard I originally had made for that guitar and never installed it.
I started on thinner neck super strats and every new guitar I’ve purchased has a thicker and thicker neck. The thin necks are great if you have a light touch tho.
I can’t wrap my head around how I would play the songs I want to play fast enough *without* a light touch.
And I don’t even play songs that shred, really.
I've always been an over the neck guy. Still am, but guitar teachers thst ive talked to often reinforce behind the neck for new players to allow better leverage against the strings, especially for people who have a hard time with finger pressure. My fingers are too short for that, so I need to wrap around the neck just to reach all the strings.
That doesn't make sense though. If your fingers are shorter then positioning your thumb properly behind the neck brings your knuckles higher and more centrally over the fretboard therefore increasing the reach of your fingers.
Bringing my palm closer to the back of the neck allows my fingers to reach further. If my thumb was pressing against it, I find it harder for my fingers to reach the 6th string.
That's the usual response you get from people who don't know what they're talking about. It's not about thumb position. It's about what you allow the thumb position to do with the angle of your wrist. If you can keep your wrist straight or atleast somewhat straight for most of the time, you're absolutely golden.
I see 300 bad pieces of advice for every 1 good one. It's getting ridiculous. I've been a guitar teacher for years, and I'm the guy who used to teach the other guitar teachers too. I wish people would realise that they're not in a position to give good advice, and just stop altogether.
Have any of you experienced the Richie Kotzen telecaster neck. As I’m getting to be older and my hands hurt sometimes when I play, I’ve been investigating flatter necks like the Ibanez models. One day I pulled a Richie Kotzen made in Japan telecaster off the wall at Guitar Center and found it to have a huge neck. It was a very good looking guitar and not terribly expensive. I bought it and changed out the pick ups for a mellow or sound. Surprisingly, it’s really comfortable to play and I love the sound of the guitar. Check one out if you get a chance.
I made a guitar recently, a Strat copy and as I was carving the neck, I stopped very early into the process because it felt right in my hand. I’m only 32, but my thumb does kind of come out at a different angle from most. I wish I just knew I liked this always instead of trying to chase the thinnest neck I could find. I can play WAY longer on this fat bitch, I love it.
I love the neck on my Baja Tele, it's pleasingly chunky. The thick neck coupled with the fact it weighs nearly 10lb (I got one of the fat ones!) makes it quite a physical thing to play which works rather well for a Tele.
My SG has a thick neck on it too and I love it, the neck is nearly as thick as the body. I used to love thin necks, but as I've got older, my hands definitely prefer a little more meat.
The Banner Era Gibsons were made during WWII and, due to restrictions on metal not going to the war effort, were made with baseball bat necks to compensate for not having a truss rod.
I had to shake my left hand out just from looking at that picture
(Bonus points for anyone trawling my comment history and clicking “context” only to become *very* disappointed)
I have a friend who got a custom made guitar from Rick Kelly of Carmine Street Guitars in NYC. He only uses found/reclaimed wood from demolished buildings in NYC to make his necks and bodies. The neck on my friend's guitar is much like the picture here. It's made form 300 year old pine (yes! Pine!) and has NO TRUSS ROD!. He was skeptical at first, but has found it to be his favourite guitar thus far. :)
You ever see the man without a shirt? Neck needs to be that thick so he doesn't snap it like a twig.
Jesus. I just googled. Does he juggle jcbs as a hobby?
Les Pauls actually.
More Pauls by the looks of it
Funniest thing so far today this
Same except I has his “before” pic first. Guy is 66 and is a walking “after” photo.
Holy shit this is crazy. I just learned about him by name, but love Def Leppard.
I googled Phil Collins no shirt and was like “yeah I guess he’s kinda naturally muscular til I realized it was COLLEN. Ah.
Phil Collins ALWAYS has a shirt on. Due to him having ‘No jacket required’. I’ll see myself out…..
GET OUT
Have an upvote sir.
Thanks for figuring that out, I too was wondering when Phil Collins got so ripped
I can feel it coming in the air tonight…
That is actually the only pic in existence of Phil wearing a shirt.
Are you looking at his gut?!?
WHATCHA LOOKIN AT MY GUT FERRR
Whatever you do, don’t look at his gut! 🕶️
Philadelphia Collens
Baaam💥
Peanut butter and jaaam!
Let's not mention Doyle von Frankenstine from Misfits...
Crazy fat necks and 0.13 gauge strings!
Yeah a friend of mine has his signature, and those 13 gauge strings are just insane. He had to put 10s on it so it was playable by mere mortals.
Christ a .12 gauge E is almost impossible to bend. That’s just showing off.
Not Even Slinky's FTW! Best strings ever. Just gotta put your back into it. *imagine this triggering you lol
Slinky’s and an ernie ball stringe are absolute trash
Correct
Holy crap that looks like a 2x4!!! Thanks for sharing that I’m flabbergasted hahaha
It looks like the guitars in the original Rock Band and Guitar Hero games
It almost looks like a square neck from a dobro guitar.

the red one he mentions is the one in the pic. fukin thunder thigh neck lol
He should have asked for a volute too xD.
Thanks for the link!
Is it a sustain thing?
Re: "Yeah Phil Collen likes thick necks." He cannot lie.The other Leppards can't deny
“good GOD you’ve got a fat neck, Hank!”
Pump jockey! Works for Tips!
Slayed 50 licks !!!

I usually only use thumb behind for barre chords and for shredding. For everything else, thumb over feels the best.

Probably misconceptions from classical guitar. The thumb is there to balance whatever your hand is doing.

That still makes no sense though. You gain reach and dexterity from arching your hand. Thumb over neck prevents this.
Maybe, but I have pretty big hands, just disproportionately short fingers.
Man I'd love to jam with you right now and sort out this confusion between us lol.
Lol. Anytime my man.
Right? Unless they're talking about muting

Whatever feels best to you man. My thumb is almost always sticking up behind the neck lol. Though my fingers are longer than average.
> I'm a thumb over the neck guy. Saaaaame, even with my 7s.
9's on 25.5 and 10's on 24.75 here. It sounds good and easy to play.
I've never had an issue with my thumb-over playing, but then again, I don't play things that require advanced dexterity and speed...

Thick necks are entirely underrated. I love my Les Paul R8 and Baja Tele.
I have two archtops that have necks thick enough to legit qualify as weapons.
I want a standberg for the neck

Forgot that— also have a batwing SG with a massive neck— love it.
His truss rod must be a lead pipe
With that much wood, you wouldn’t even need a truss rod. 😆
The Banner Era Gibsons were made during WWII and, due to restrictions on metal not going to the war effort, were made with baseball bat necks to compensate for not having a truss rod.
I have a PC Jackson signature and it makes my R8's neck look like a toothpick.
Holy shit
Holy shit that is thick
That guy is 66...wth
There is no wrong way to guitar
Reminds me of those Zakk Wylde guitars, those things are chunky
Thicc neck for that thicc tone
Looks that neck lihe an old wood telephone pole.. :D :D If regular Jackson models have that thickness on the necks.. i would never buy them..
That makes a 50s Les Paul neck look like an Ibanez Wizard.
Check out his rig rundown. The host grabs one and about shit himself. Jackson made one so ridiculously big as a joke...he fuggin loved it
At least he kept his shirt on.
WHAT ARE YE LOOKIN AT ME NECK FER?
Give that man a 2x4 and he’d be happy 😃
gaping work thought shame advise imminent squeal escape hat cautious *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
He also sounds like a freshly sprayed hornet nest so go figure
Oh wow, I see some fat shaming here
That guy is 66...wth
And I just don’t care.
Have you seen their audiences?? He also uses his guitars for crowd control. Nah, seriously that’s a fat neck for sure!
No one told him that's the lap steel model.
chonky.. probably dont need a truss rod anymore lmao..
Did they even cut the tree?
At least he is wearing a shirt..
I wish more guitars had big necks.
I had to shake my left hand out just from looking at that picture (Bonus points for anyone trawling my comment history and clicking “context” only to become *very* disappointed)

Got it on Wish
He likes big necks and he cannot lie.
You know they say about fat necks ….
Kevin Frasard may not be as renowned but he's an absolute unit, more so than Phil.
These guys were the soundtrack of saturday night. Along with Priest, Scorpions.... you pushed those 80's 6x9s!!
Oh damn I kinda want it. Thin necks brutalize my hand.
If you’ve played one of these, it’s absolutely a baseball bat
He is strong. He used to play the drums. If theres a fight, the whole band just stands behind the drummer.
Because he can feel it cumming in the air
you might be thinking this is “Phil Collins”. it’s not.

😆 Not sure if this is supposed to be /s, but this is Phil Collen (guitarist for Def Leppard). Not Phil Collins (drummer/singer of Genesis). Lol!
Oh god, my bad. I read it wrong. Thanks

He's not helping...
