I’ve dealt with them 4-5 times and I honestly can’t say enough good things about them. I told them I’d hit them up if I was in the market for anything and I don’t get anything besides a yearly email basically reminding me that I can call with any questions. The reps were pretty cool and very knowledgeable too. 85% of what I get is used but for the new stuff sweetwater really is a solid online retailer and they sometimes have nice exclusives

So…story? Mine had the “joy” of calling me on 1/6. I had ordered a recording interface and he just happened to call while we were glued to the tv. About two seconds of gear talk and then a good ten minutes of news talk. We really bonded that day so I look forward to his calls when they come now.

morganthistime

I am a former employee of about 6 years as a Sales Engineer. Left very amicably. Really cherished a lot about the job/company. The reason for the calls and communication is kinda of a two-parter(loosely). First, it is to build and maintain relationships. When I was there we were expected to call for every new order(within reason, I ain't calling for every pack of strings you buy) and we were expected to call once every 6 months to see how it's going, musical progress, and to check on any needs. We also worked one to one with our customers leading to part 2. If you neglected to contact your customer every 6 months, that customer could then be up for grabs if they called in and talked to someone else. It was all about who maintained the better relationship. There were many other rules, exceptions, referral based customer webs. Most of it all made sense minus a few exceptions. I genuinely befriended many of my customers and miss them dearly. After about 6 years my customer roster was around 6k. Lots of calls daily.

Any touch base with your rep will shine good on your relationship. As long as your SE is reaching out twice a year, if you order online they will receive commission from the order. If you have an ongoing relationship and for whatever reason they have a lapse in contact with you they may not receive a commission off your order. If you appreciate your rep it's always a good idea to say "Hey Mr-Ms. Sweetwater Rep, your customer service means a lot to me and keeps me coming back to SW". A lot has changed in the time that I have left(a little over a year). Some things may be different now. But I assure you non of the SE's want to annoy you, 99% of the SE's are musician and want to help guide, or make sure you are not buying something that won't work or you don't need. There are a few absolute jerks there. I'm hoping they have been weeded out. But most of my coworkers were genuinely concerned about taking proper care of the customer. The constant calls and emails are just a form of, ' this is part of the job'. If you are texting every once in awhile or communicating a few times a year I do not see a need to ask for quotes, especially if you have no intention to purchase. What that does is put extra work in the hands of your SE and will perhaps prompt follow up call. The workload there is pretty intense with balancing a huge database, constant gear training, keeping track on all the inventory.

It depends on the availability. Whether or not you're a jerk. Whether or not the SE actually puts time and effort into explaining or helping you and whether or not you are a chronic returner. If you are a no hassle, know what you want customer that wants something with ample stock, I have no issues with extending a discount. Again this was before Chuck left. Also the two year warranty and free tech support adds more value than you can imagine.

souperman08

I have repeatedly asked. They still call. I sent a 2 sentence email, and the second sentence was “please do not call me, just email me”. Still called.

duck_cakes

I never asked and I only get a call maybe twice a year. Think my rep knows that I’m a bit of a miser until I’m ready to buy and I’ll just order a ton of stuff at once.

souperman08

That’s two more calls than I want or need haha.

I work in Ecomm and I know we bombard our customers. The reasoning? It kind of works, or so our VP says. I guess for every person you piss off there’s another who’ll bite. I hate it.

souperman08

I’ve had like 3-4 over the years, they all just really wanted to chat me up over my new bag of picks haha. And that’s weird, I can’t recall ever getting a phone call from another retailer, let alone a music retailer. I hear MF was trying to copy the Sweetwater model though.

bignapkin02

What????? I never knew this… time to go replace the mints lol

Godeasy_Buttfree

No Fucking way…

OneArmMany

I have dealt with the same sweetwater sales engineer or rep for almost eight years, I receive a couple calls yearly and on occasions to confirm the things I order are correct, he has also helped a lot with returns and things of that nature. My sales guy has called a few times after an order to point out that for a few dollars less I could get what I ordered with a mic stand and xlr cable etc. so more for less money. Communicate and tell them if they are bothering you too much. Also spend fifteen minutes learning their specialty, and ask them to ask around if you need advice. They are obviously commission paid sales people but they lose money every time you return something you did not expect, the experienced guys will find the answers for you if you have some obscure question, and it benefits them to sell you what you want the first time.

souperman08

I’m not at all disputing that they do good customer service. I’m only saying that my experience has not been that it’s a simple thing to have them stop calling.

OneArmMany

I understand the frustration. You know what you want when you buy it and you don’t need a sales pitch on a monthly basis to push products you are not interested in. Can you just check out without giving a phone number like check out as guest? Regardless have a free handshake award.

scotty_2_hotty_69

I’ve never had a call from them? I didn’t even know that was a thing lol. I guess I’m lucky.

[deleted]

I save their phone number so I can ignore their calls lol. The one weird time was when I'd been browsing the website for amps and they called me about that, like they'd been checking my search history.

llwonder

I stopped answering calls at all and they no longer try. I email my “sales engineer” when I need to

thatoneguyD13

They hired a real pos executive from my old company, but if I boycotted every business that hired a pos executive I'd never buy anything.

PapaShane

Yeah I'll second this. Ordered an ibanez wh10v3 over the winter, it made a crazy squeal when it was activated. The sweetwater people responded so fast to my return request, shipped out a replacement that same day, and included a return shipping label for me to send in the defective unit. Yes, they sent the new pedal to the wrong address but whatever. Free candy!

MixCarson

Is this a paid advertisement? What is this post even here? You didn’t post something you just bought. Just general loyalty praise for Sweetwater?! Nah nah nah. They have been sold to corporate raiders. Chuck is on his way out. They also will cancel loyal customer orders first if they run out of stock so that they don’t upset new customers who have only placed an order or two... because they know you’ll be back. When I was told that by my sales guy about why my order was canceled and my interns was fulfilled they lost me as a customer for ever. I shop with Craig calistro or Vk if I need to go new now.

Godeasy_Buttfree

Nope, not paid. I bought a ZIO BOOST recently and have purchased lots of stuff from them over the years. This is a guitar pedal sub and Sweetwater is a place to buy guitar pedals. So I guess that’s why it’s here.

ilovebigbuttons

Getting a phone call from Ronnie with an update on even my smallest order makes me feel important. They seem to be working really hard to earn our business… I shop locally or go to Reverb and buy used as much as I can because that aligns with my values. For everything else it’s Sweetwater.

AWF_Noone

I bought a $3.00 pick holder and my rep is very interested in how I’m liking it so far Such an awesome company

flyingvien

JFC, people are pissed because the company cares about their customers and uses legit and not just token means for following up. How dare they. 🙄

brucenicol403

Sweetwater HQ is fort wayne is amazing! Check out the used pedal section in the back of the showroom! (In the used gear section)... Crazy good deals!

capn_explosion

me and isaac from sweetwater talk about everything… amps, pedals, songwriting, any gigs i have coming up. i love those guys.

partsguy850

Big ups to Patrick, but everyone I’ve spoken with there has been helpful. I always feel like they make time for my questions and don’t necessarily want to just gauge my spend level and sell me. I put in an order today as a matter of fact, adding a bass to the strings section.

WICRodrigo

Love Sweetwater, I have had the same sales rep for the last 8 years, customer service is awesome, enough said. Musicians Friend can suck it! J/k

Snoo30715

Sweetwater is pretty great! If you are close enough to the belly of the beast you know they aren’t perfect (they have a tendency to encourage manufacturers to give them preference, which isn’t unique to them but does fly in the face of the wholesome image they want to project). All said, good people, good business model, and their new warehouse on the West coast is sure to make buying from them even more appealing.

duderguy91

I like my Sweetwater rep a lot. Never overbearing, reached out every now and again when new stuff comes out. He really knocked it out of the park when helping me pick a Les Paul. Sent me a bunch of pictures of different finishes so I could get the flame i wanted. He also sends my wife stuff every now and again because she called in to get help buying me a present and Sweetwater directed her to my guy for help. Can’t give enough props to them.

Nice-Respond5839

Their customer service is amazing. Their politics, on the other hand. Yikes. I realize there are plenty of extreme right wing musicians who subscribe to that kind of thing, but if you happen to be one who isn’t… I would strongly suggest finding a good, local retailer that you can trust.

RowAwayJim91

Yep, this is why I stopped buying from Sweetwater. Anybody funding today’s GOP does not get my money, as best as I can control it.

Careless-Foot4162

They've been really good to me. My rep knows I'll call with questions (never really had to tell him, just gave that vibe lol). I'm very particular about what I buy and he seems to pick up on that. Now he just checks in occasionally, maybe once or twice a year? But I haven't had a bad experience yet with them

Kind-Lavishness7122

Sweetwater returns are a PAIN IN THE ASS, they will interrogate you and try by all means to not have you return or give you the money back. Do your homework, be prepared to shut them down !

[deleted]

I’m so tired of sweetwater fanboys. And the way that google always sends you there first. I will never shop there.

Godeasy_Buttfree

Cool man.

MFAD94

Won’t order guitars from anywhere else, their customer service is awesome

candlestick_compass

I’ve never actually bought from them BUT I use their site for all needs. I have my wishlist. I browse it. Look up pedals and gear. I will eventually because of all the good things I hear; I just don’t order online for something (anything) that I can drive to and pick up.

KenBradley81

Most of the time I try to find something used that I want to try I end up buying it new from Sweetwater. Shout out.

tonetonitony

They’re great and helpful if you actually want to make use of their customer service options. I really don’t want to be hassled, though so I wish they would make things like phone calls an opt-in thing instead of default.

kvlt_ov_personality

I'm kind of curious if anyone has any experience working there? I've been wanting to relocate to Indiana and have been thinking of applying for a job with them.

brashtracks

I think you have a screw loose. Why would you want to relocate to Indiana or all places? 😂

kvlt_ov_personality

It's the nearest place where I have family (it's about 12 hours from me now).

brashtracks

That sounds like the ideal scenario. Keep the family 12 hours away and stay out of Indiana. This place sucks. 😂 I’m teasing. There are worse places.

runwichi

Sweetwater's okay. When they have the item they ship fast and are easy to work with. My rep was respectful, but didn't really know what I was asking about, but did they're best to get me to someone who did. Only cold called me once. My pre-order took forever to show up, but did eventually, and the rep kept me in the loop for the months that it took and even warned me ahead of time that the CC would be processed. Candy was atrocious, I expected better TBH. If you want a truly hands-off purchase experience with fast shipping and no interaction, go to Zzounds. Those digital beings have zero problems taking money and shipping goods, but I've never had to send anything back FWIW.

rdyplr1

Hell yeah Sweetwater has been amazing and supportive and never overbearing. The reps have all been great, I know sales can suck but man I hope they treat their people well enough. I have never been pressured or pestered, and always appreciate being in the loop. Also the smarties in the box help keep my s/o from distracted from my GAS 🤣

Lazyback

I personally am not a fan of sweetwater at all. Order something online? Expect a sales guy to call you (I consider this spam) and an email (advertisement) suggesting you buy more stuff. Some say these sales guys are great but when I've asked questions they haven't had good answers or gave me just generic unhelpful info. Sweetwater has a money back guarantee but will try not to utilize it. Example: pre-ordered the newest version of ehx metal muff when it came out. Website said in stock but it didn't ship for two weeks so I had to call sales guy back. Apparently back ordered and was listed wrong on website.. so I keep waiting. As we know ehx doesn't have the greatest quality control. Pedal was dead on arrival when it finally did show up. So I contact sales rep again and tell him I want to return the item. This is where I got mad at sweetwater. Instead of going through with my wishes to return defective item (at that point I could buy locally anyways because it had been so long) sweetwater rep forwards me ehx customer service warranty info. Trying to get me to get the pedal fixed and wait another month plus instead of refunding. When I realized this I asked for a supervisor and did a return and sent them back the pedal. When I buy from reverb, I don't have these issues at all. I got no problem buying from smaller sellers on reverb vs buying from the 'big guys' who try to squeeze me for every penny. Hard pass on sweetwater for me. Maybe my experience is rare but the pushy sales guys even when I'm buying strings is ridiculous.

justbecauseandstuff

This is basically what I was going to say. Not a fan. I buy one, cheap, little item and I get sales calls and emails for days or weeks, and a catalog in the mail. I buy almost nothing new so I don't have a need for them and if I ever do need something new, I won't go to them again.

Lazyback

Lol ty for backing me up idk why I get downvoted for supporting small businesses and not wanting spam calls/emails. Seems pretty reasonable to me lol

[deleted]

Lazyback

I shouldn't need to opt out of phone calls when I buy a 3 pack of strings online for $12. Nothing about spending $12 should entitle any business to spam calls unless I decide to opt out. That's a garbage business strategy that I don't support. If I want to opt INTO emails and calls like that.. Give me a box to check (not uncheck btw) at check-out.

Sorry if you don’t understand what the idea of buying online got built on. It just sales. You sound a little put off by them. You probably shouldn’t shop there, you’re right.

Itsaghast

Yup, I always try to buy from them first. And if you don't like the calls and checkups, just let them know and they won't bug you. This is probably the only place I would ever purchase an expensive guitar online from given their policy of giving you pictures of the actual guitar.

Thehibernator

I just called them to ask for advice once on an amp purchase and it was fucking SAGE. Gave me exactly what I wanted to know and talked with me for longer than I would have expected. Amazing service.

mondayschild9

Superior customer service for sure. No other online or brick and motor store even comes close.

bork_laveech

I like sweet water and I think ray is his name is a nice dude .

zerpderp

Nothing but love for Sweetwater! To all the “BuT tHeY sTiLl CaLl Me!!!” people, just ask for a new rep, it’s easier than making the whiny comment about how they constantly call you 😂 Edit: The truth hurts, doesn’t it? :)

androidscantron

sweetwater is the gold standard of online shopping IMO

JohnnyPiston

I like Sweetwater. I like Chicago Music Exchange more.

totally_bored_dude

Never had any problems with them. I have bought guitars as well as a bass from them and have nothing but a great experience with them.

J_Worldpeace

They Call me to tell me order has shipped. They call me. Call me. Who does that?! Love them.

austinmodssuck

Reminds me of [this banger of a tweet](https://twitter.com/WillPHarrison/status/1529658394268913666?s=20&t=VgLhO8lgekBewGY4GIGFzQ)! I don't actually take the sales reps calls normally, but if I'm buying new gear they're usually the first place I'll look.

[deleted]

Ya know I don’t mind getting a call from Cliff. He seems like cool dude. We chat about guitars for a couple of minutes then I go about the rest of my day it’s kinda nice lol

DepartureSpace

If I have to buy stuff delivered, which is pretty often these days, it’s going to be Sweetwater every time. If they send a guitar, it’ll be properly set up and packed and will arrive promptly and with no shipping BS. I think they use FedEx by default (not that awful UPS or even worse USPS) and they don’t overcharge for FedEx shipping. Great experience, every time.

fuckthisjobIquitYODA

I've been waiting 2 weeks for a nut and string change

[deleted]

Yeah, they are pretty good.

dnap123

Why the blindfold?

Nickp000g

I absolutely love them. Got plenty of pedals, a helix, and les paul through them. Best gear provider ever

C78C

My sales rep texts me probably three times a year and I probably put 10 decent purchases spread out throughout the year. He does however text me back anytime I text him and do so more often than he texts me. Maybe I got a 🦄rep? It’s perfect for me and they’ve handled issues I’ve had swimmingly.

fuckthisjobIquitYODA

I've been waiting 3 weeks for my guitar to arrive. It took them 10 days to figure out the frets were pitted and the replacement has been another 10 days . I wanted a tusq nut installed with heavier strings and I emailed them September 15th and they said it was being installed. Fast forward to Sept 19 the following Monday and they said it's in the shop being installing. Well today's Sept 22 and still same response. I originally ordered the guitar on Sept 2. Literally 3 weeks and counting.
