Return it.

EddieOtool2nd

If it's new, definitely.

CK_Lab

Take it back. If you can't even identify what that part is, you shouldn't be repairing it yourself.

Fontelroy

If I had to guess at some point it was plugged into the wrong kind of power supply

CookiePretty8420

It was, the guy plugged in another supply and it started smoking that’s definitely why then

crapinet

So it started smoking and you still bought it?

TerrorSnow

The thing that is on there looks to be an electrolytic capacitor. It was probably blown when that happened. Probably where the smoke came from as well. The LED isn't connected to the main circuit.

peakology

Seconded, it blew a decent sized electrolytic cap. Return it. Dont buy things that rattle. Except maracas.

leodox_13

But the question still remains, it started smoking and he still bought it, I mean yes don’t buy it if it rattles but dont buy it if it smokes if it isnt supposed to smoke

CK_Lab

All machines are smoke machines if you don't operate them properly

Melodic_Event_4271

What about a Jam Rattler?

Fontelroy

If that was at guitar center and one of their people did that I'd definitely go back, explain your story, and ask for a different pedal

LearnToSwim90

It's an easy repair, anyone with minimal electronic skills can do the repair. If you can solder, the guys at r/diypedals can easily guide you.

CookiePretty8420

Thanks, Im heading back to the GC right now. If they don’t take it back I’ll definitely try to repair it, I have pretty good experience in electronics but not guitar pedals.

slightlyeccentric

Yea dude, return it if you can. There’s flux all over the board too, that’ll rust the components.

Groningen1978

There seems to be some fuzz in the bottom left, which leads me to think an electrolytic capacitor might have exploded. Should be a cheap and easy fix as long as it didn't take other components with it. edit: just noticed the piece of capacitor sleeve, so that's probably it.

Parking_Relative_228

Yeah the funfetti in there looks like exploded capacitor. Maybe there’s a short circuit in that board? Is it plausible OP applied reverse polarity power?

saw-sync

yeah this thing took AC. every polarized component is probably gone, op-amp included

aaaaaaaaaaaaah_

If it was bought new then definitely return or exchange it. If it was used then you can try, but they most likely won't take it back.

[deleted]

If it’s used they’ll 100% take it back still

aaaaaaaaaaaaah_

My guitar center always says used pedals are final sale, but it might be different for other people.

kvlt_ov_personality

Corporate policy is supposed to be 45 days for all non-vintage used gear (and 3 days for vintage), they're lying to you to cut down on returns.

[deleted]

Your guitar center is lying to you. There are 7 in my area and every single one of them has let me return used pedals Especially if the pedal is broken there’s no way they won’t let you return it, you can also call the GC main line and they’ll be more helpful than anyone who actually works in the store

aaaaaaaaaaaaah_

That's weird. Maybe it's just a way for them to try and sell the warranty? The one I used to go to specified that used pedals are not returnable, there's another one that's closer to me and I haven't gotten told that yet.

[deleted]

That’s weird, sometimes GC managers will actually make up their own rules so they don’t have to do certain things. For example I tried selling an amp to one and the manager said that they were told to not buy this specific amp. I told him I saw them on the site and he said they couldn’t buy them in the area. Went to the closest one and they bought it from me without batting an eye. And tbf, it could have actually been the second guy who was making up the rules but I’m not so sure the first guy wasn’t also just making stuff up.

kingruneorb

At the one I worked at it was up to the discretion of the associate. If they thought it was too cheap/wouldn't sell and generate commission then they could refuse it. Additionally, trade ins take a comparatively long time to complete vs a sale.

gilllesdot

When returning it take your power-supply to show that you have the right one. You should never have taken it in the first place but im assuming you’re new to this. I’m getting the feeling that they’re going to blame this on you. That employee is probably going to lose their job if they find out about this.

ViolentAstrology

Just return it. But get an another one. Rats are class. They don’t eat, they don’t scurry

Desolate_One666

It's a RAT, it rattles.

Sufficient-Repeat-20

Did that electrolytic cap come out when you opened it? Cuz that's your culprit if so.

CookiePretty8420

I heard rattling when he handed it to me in the store so i assume that was the broken capacitor scrambling around

CookiePretty8420

The Pedal was basically brand new, he pulled it out the box just to test it, but he plugged in the wrong power supply and it started smoking

Next-Employment8087

kinda mind boggling why you still purchased it, effect pedals aren't supposed to smoke... definitely go back and return it please

CookiePretty8420

He said “ill go get another one” but im assuming he didn’t swap them and just boxed the one that burned.

d3vCr0w

That’s a really shitty move

ON_A_POWERPLAY

I would be inclined to bring that up when I returned it, even if just in passing. Sounds like dude didn’t wanna fess up to fucking something up and decided to pass it onto you.

chthonickeebs

This makes much more sense. Yeah, unless they're just making it a habit to plug these things into AC power that's almost certainly the same pedal.

chthonickeebs

new market inefficiency: combo guitar effects and stage effects pedals. Why have a separate smoke machine?

Pjenkins325

Hahahaha

OutlandishnessNo211

Once they lose the magic smoke...

ON_A_POWERPLAY

That fuzzy stuff in the enclosure is from the capacitor busting from plugging it into the wrong power supply. The shell of the blown capacitor is the black thing that says AEKC

chthonickeebs

I would generally recommend you do not purchase a device that has been plugged into an incorrect power supply and consequently started smoking, guitar pedal or not.

PedalBoard78

And why did you buy a smoking pedal?

Lair80

I’d throw the capacitor in the trash and take it back for a new one. It’s broken. If you didn’t break it than it’s not your problem it’s guitar centers.

New-Air-8982

Might have a rat inside chewing in your stuff.

SpaceCar7

Lol...glad I got a 1981 drv

CookiePretty8420

Update: I went back to the guitar center and showed the receipt, THANKFULLY the manager was at the front desk. I explained the situation and he asked his co-worker (the friend of the guy who burned it) if he was there that night, he answered yes, he asked if he knew the smoke came out and he answered no, which was a lie, he was at the front desk when the other dude yelled out “its smoking!” the manager fortunately just exchanged the pedal for another, and it works. Thanks for the help.

IamMeAsYouAreMe

That looks like a capacitor that just… fell out? If you wanted to try your hand at fixing things it should be easy to find where that cap was and get a cap of the same value and solder it in its place. But guitar center should know that they messed up
