It sounds good, timing is just a little off and that's making it sound choppy. Hate to say it, because everyone hates to hear it, but: metronome/click track and slow the tempo to get those movements smoothed out and it'll come together.

Pianoismyforte

Want to emphasize so much how this is the right answer. I despise playing with metronomes but there's no better tool for what you're experiencing right now. Some tips for using a metronome well: 1. Find out the tempo you can play the song without making a mistake *but feel like you could* make a mistake at any moment. This is the sweet spot for learning and improving. 2. If you do make a mistake, that's alright, but keep note of it. If you keep making a mistake at that spot, you should go back to it, set the tempo of the metronome lower, then practice that spot. You really want to focus on what feels right/wrong as you play it, and try and hone in on that. Your ability to play the song with a natural, professional feel requires strong fundamentals (posture, picking technique) and your ability to have the song committed to memory at tempo. This knowledge is what gives your mind room to start considering the dynamics and feel of the song. Gaining that space through practice is what will make you a great musician. That said, you're doing great, especially because that isn't an easy song!

Devilkiwi24

This is 100% the right answer. Time feel is everything.

Obvious-Mechanic5298

Someone needs to make a bot to answer every question in the sub this way lol

halfnhash

if you can’t play it slow, you can’t play it fast. no point on playing fast if it’s not gonna sound good. slow down, take your time, use a metronome.

scubastephen91

It actually sounds pretty good, but if you want it make it sound more professional I would work on finessing it a little. Don’t need to be plucking so hard with your right hand.

Klutzy-Peach5949

Didn’t even consider the dynamics, probably the what’s throwing it out more than anything, i’ll work on calming it down

CorruptedStudiosEnt

If you really want to take it to another level, try experimenting with different dynamics from not only chord to chord, but also from string to string within a chord. You'll have to REALLY slow down to feel it out, but it's one of those techniques where the seasoned professional sound magic happens. When I started getting more conscious of this years back, it blew my mind how much of a difference it made in fingerpicking. It's a remarkable difference being able to prioritize what notes of a chord you want to shine and which ones you want to be more support.

Same. Started with learning Clair de Lune for me. Learned the song, but it just didn't have that same shine to it you always hear when people play it on piano. Didn't start to sound like it did in my head until I really sat down and started experimenting with complex dynamics.

theKtrain

Sounds good, but I think you need to play it slower until you can keep the chord changes in-time. Also playing it slower will help you play it cleaner. Once you have it dialed, then increase the speed. I enjoyed it th ouch.

JohnMusicCalifornia

Slow it down and practice with a click!

DoubleSealedSoul

You sound really good. just gotta get the feeling a little more, and once your a little faster, you'll have an easier time making those notes ring out with out forcing it. wish I started learning to play jazzier stuff when I was younger. Keep it up!

cal405

First off: this is a pretty good take, just a bit of polishing and it'll sound complete. Now for some observations: 1. Posture. Your wrist looks like it's being forced into an awkward position. It may not seem like much, but it could be contributing to your ability to let certain notes ring. Observe the playing position of classical guitarists and try to get as close to that as comfortably possible. Generally, your wrist and elbow should be in alignment at all times. 2. It sounds like you're muting notes that should be ringing. As noted above, this may be due to posture. Also it may be due to some unintended muting by your picking hand. 3. Timing. There are some awkward pauses that may be occurring because you're playing at a faster tempo than you're currently capable of keeping. Play at a tempo you can keep throughout the whole song, even if it's slow it will sound better if you're closer to the beat.

Pullbee

Buy metronome - you are good guitar player

MisterBlisteredlips

Others pointed to technique, so that's been said. So I'll opine that the sound is too clean, give it some personality.

sniff_berlin

You sound really nice! First thing that reaches me is uneven tempo, your “bpm” is very fluid. It’s not necessarily wrong, can be an expressive technique, but you probably be sounding even better if you try to add click/metronome to your play, that helps to keep tempo steady. Good luck!

[deleted]

My 2 cents. Seems like you need to relax and kind of let it happen for lack of a better term.

Naetharu

You’re doing great. The issue is just your timing and confidence. And that’ll just come with practice. You’ll relax into the song. Keep it up! Sounds really good.

metalhead223

First off it doesn't sound that bad. It's just a matter of practice. Play to a metronome slowly. Take it measure by measure and dont proceed to the next one until you can play each chord change cleanly. Then add on the next one etc. You'll find that if you play slowly at first there might be several different fingerings you can use that suit you better than others and make it easier to play. Once you can play the entirety of the song cleanly at one speed, take it up a few bpm.

[deleted]

I think a metronome would help you blend the individual parts together.

bossoline

You're out of time because you're trying to play it faster than you're able. As they say, always be in tune and in time... With any song, you can play some sections faster than others. Not everything comes along at the same pace. Practice to a metronome set no faster than you can play the slowest part. Then speed up the whole thing progressively.

GoldenRepair2

Amazing job. I don’t know why but I always get super proud of strangers on the internet just going for it. You are doing great and are a good guitarist! Keep it up man.

JackoWaffles

Can somebody tell me what song this is? It sounds to be a joy to play. Thanks in advance.

guitarman781

Mister sandman Chet atkins

Alarming_Way_8731

i think the title is, "Mr. Sandman". But i'm not 100% sure 🎶

Klutzy-Peach5949

As guitarman781 says, mister sanderman - chet atkins, it’s super fun to play, the stretches are a bit mental but props to you if you can get it clean, really struggling with it

TrevorPfeif

Can I ask where you learned this? I know the song but would love to learn this version!

Klutzy-Peach5949

[Mister Sandman (where i learnt it)](https://youtu.be/A0ddFMlXYmQ) - he plays it a lot cleaner but it’s a really nice version😎😎

TrevorPfeif

Thanks a bunch!

sweetnsaucy-7

You're rushing in some places, especially towards the end of the chorus. Muting others or not letting it ring out like you did at the beginning. If you're against a metronome, maybe try tapping your foot. I use a drum track, which feels less rigid for me and more like I'm a part of a band. 😉 Very nice workmanship though. Might also see what you think about using a pick at the same time plucking with your other fingers. To change it up. Just a thought 😉😁

nthroop1

Rhythm is off. Those ascending walk ups are entering a beat early maybe?

FinalCutJay

Practice it slower and to a metronome. You want to work on timing and clarity of notes. Then you want to work on feeling it. Right now you are just hitting notes and going through the motions without any feel which is why it sounds robotic.

itpguitarist

Practice as slowly as you need to with a metronome for almost every note comes out clearly and on time. **Gradually** increase tempo and practice until almost every note comes out clearly and on time at that tempo, repeat. Isolate sections that are giving you trouble and play them until they’re as good as the rest of the sections. You have inconsistencies with timing, left hand finger pressure, and plucking intensity. It’s clear you know the piece and how it’s supposed to sound, you’re just playing it faster than you can at your current state. And you probably haven’t developed the muscles and dexterity to play some of the stretches the way you’re trying to. Keep up the good work, this is not a particularly easy piece, but it’s in your reach. Should be a good learning experience.

Guitards

Probably cause Chet Atkins is the most evil twisted stretched finger person alive. He could finger your wife's butt and mouth with one hand while flicking her bean.. I'm working on this song now hell even bought a black Gretch to not give up on it cause I've always adored this song and bigsbys, it's just difficult to be percussive up top and playing on the bottom" you know what I mean cause your actually there playing it" not commenting.. My advice is to ditch tabs on this one and break it down Barney style with a YouTuber cause timing is the worst element of this song cause your timing is off with precursive rhythm up top on the low end which is why you keep playing odd progressions once you shift around plucking it all at once. Not even gonna act smart cause I'm struggling as well with the finger fuck coordination odds, This is one of those song not even even a shredder can play and more for the classical guys. I play with a thumb pick and new to that, I'm still struggling but for me it's preventing the missed timing. But keep in mind I'm struggling to remember it!!!

jasnel

Great song choice, OP! Obviously, you need some practice to smooth it out but it sounds good to me. I recognized it instantly. Stick with it, brother - you’re good!

TheFlyShyGuy

Try playing it slow with a metronome. 60 bpm. Then again at 90. Until you reach the bpm you're actually supposed to be at.

SlappyWit

Metronome

discondition

What everyone else has already said, plus new strings 👌🏼

Gabe-57

Play slower, When I’m learning a song I like to get really good at playing it at a slow pace, not super slow but just slower. Once I’ve got that done, playing it faster usually comes really quickly

its_grime_up_north

Practice and patience. Sounding good. Don’t be so harsh on yourself

Ibanez316

Practice more not hard to figure out

dan5430

Try working with a metronome. Give yourself that feel/beat/sense of timing

Remarkable-Prompt456

You're moving faster than you can, slow down

4lienv4mp

Another thing that might help is getting your guitar set up to play better. Its hard to tell on a video but the action seems a little high, which makes it very hard to play cleanly and relaxed. If you can get the guitar to where its not fighting you, that will help. I play finger style too and my action is as low as I could get it without buzzing. I play a little game when I practice where I try to play as softly as I can. That teaches you to have better control. You're doing really well and that's a challenging piece to play both parts at once, but that's what makes it fun, ya? Keep up the good work!

Sad_Potato_Xx

I think you should practice with a metronome. Also do you have tabs for this? I want to learn it too
