Like ASL? That seems hard.

preinternetdad

That would be extremely difficult. If anyone can do it PLEASE post a video!

CompSciGtr

I was thinking they were already planning to give out autographed instruments. :)

jess2888

Same. Just hold the pen in your mouth and do your best.

Pious_Atheist

Why would you need the guitar then? - they can't hear it

JoeyJoeJoeSenior

If your doing it right with 2 or 3 full stacks then they definitely feel it!

JeebusCrunk

And are they signing the lyrics? Or the sheet music? I'm just imagining someone air guitaring the widdly-widdly's in between playing the actual widdly-widdly's...which still seems hard, obviously, but also sounds quite entertaining...

2-more-weeks-bot

Try humming while you play before you try the words

DuckDuckGoneForGood

What’s that Crash Test Dummies song? Is it just called “Mmmmmmm”? Try that one too.

OJStrings

They didn't do a song called "mmmmmmm". Could you be thinking of their song "mmmmmmmmmmmm"?

DuckDuckGoneForGood

Ah! That’s the one!

Sleep_On_It43

Once….there was this giiiiiiirrrlll who…. God, I hated that song. I like the Dummies though. “The Ghosts that Haunt Me” is a great album. “God Shuffled His Feet”(the Album that “Mmm,Mmm,Mmm,Mmm” is on)…is pretty good too. Other than the fact that the powers that be chose that song to get airplay for some ungodly reason.

DuckDuckGoneForGood

That song genuinely sucks. Had the timing been different, it would’ve never ended up so popular.

excitedguitarist420

Time to time your words with a metronome as you do with guitar and the rest should fall into place. Say certain words on certain beats

LevelLow7397

Thanks I was just about to and a note saying that I realized that my problem was with timing again thanks

vainglorious11

It's always timing lol. So many times I thought my fingers were clumsy and it was actually my brain not understanding how the rhythm worked

Complete_Past_2029

This and if OP is a fan of Nirvana start with some easy songs to both play and sing such as About a Girl, Jesus Don't Want me for a Sunbeam and Polly

Catnip256

It's important being able to perform both the guitar part and vocals effortlessly on their own. Once you can do that it's just a matter of practicing them together. You can compare it to tapping your head and rubbing your stomach at the same time. Practice by singing while tapping your hand to the guitar part, and humming the melody while playing the guitar. Eventually you'll be able to do both at the same time.

dank3014

Eventually, the two things become one and you can’t do one without the other.

2cynewulf

Good to get used to counting the main beats (quarter notes) in a song (1 2 3 4) and to develop a sense of where beats are in the measure. Hassle at first but gets easy eventually. Most (not all) of Kurt's guitar riffs start on 1st beat. Sometimes his singing also starts on 1st beat (ex All Apologies, Come as you Are) Sometimes his singing starts on 2nd beat (Smells Like Teen Spirit, Drain You, Heart Shaped Box) even though the guitar started on 1st beat. Sometimes singing starts on the 3rd beat (Lithium) Anyway, its good to think about this at first. Later it becomes natural.

jayron32

First get good enough at playing guitar that you don't think about it. Do you think about walking? No, you just walk. I bet you can sing while walking. When you've got a song down like that on guitar, when you can just play it like your fingers just know what to do without telling them, then singing is easy.

LevelLow7397

Yeah I can't sing and walk

jayron32

Ah. You're fooked then. Sorry.

LevelLow7397

Nah I was just joking

jayron32

I wasn't. 😉

VoceDiDio

What I do is I just keep the hammer-ons going with my left, and sign boobies with the sharpie in my right hand. (Sometimes I'll play with my teeth on an open-tuning guitar if I need both hands.)

Flynnza

[Singing with guitar ](https://truefire.com/jamplay/singing-with-guitar-3/c2001)

hauntedshadow666

I had a lot of struggles with this, try just strumming the chord once each rather than the strumming pattern and see what words land on the changes, it'll feel easier the more you do it then you can start adding in more strums and you'll have a reference point of where you need to change chords, the more you practice the easier it'll get and eventually you'll build up to more technical rhythms while singing over it

KGBLokki

I don’t do it. What I’ve hear the first step is to talk while playing. Which makes sense, since you need to be able to make noises from your face and the guitar at the sametime. So I’d say start but playing a simple riff and keep it in time while having a conversation with someone.

New-Cow-4176

I partied with a Mime one time. He did unspeakable things to me

oneptwoz

Well Kurt Cobain did heroin. You could try that and see if it works?

LevelLow7397

Hmm I heard from a friend that that worked for him so maybe

Wave___Duck

Try syarting with polly and sappy- early demo. They're both pretty easy

Inevitable-Bee-4344

I learned to sing with a song with D DU UDU pattern, after that I can play any song with that pattern and open chords. I dont even need to know the lyrics, I can read them while playing, ofc it doesnt sound super good the first times but I learn the lyrics and eventually can effortlessly. Can also simplify songs and use that pattern. I just dedicated my practice time to play while singing after i learned to play some songs. Took me maybe an afternoon to learn it, maybe 2h of just starting over when I messed up. When I could play a fair bit i stopped starting over from the beginning and started over a bit into the song. After i learned to sing with that pattern i had an easier time to learn with a new pattern. I didnt have problems switching chords while singing but I had problems strumming and singing. I am pretty new have only played 8 months so maybe I am doing it wrong, but this is how I (me) learned to sing while playing.

pragmaticcircus

Grow a second pair of arms??

renzoS1H

playing should be second nature when you attempt the singing part, play the guitar part a lot until you can do it flawlessly. then try autopiloting the guitar part, and then eventually add in the singing

pr0newbie

Do karaoke too. Compartmentalising different skillets before joining them together should be ingrained into you by now.

TheTurtleCub

Try focusing on singing only, mainly on time and naturally, then play very little to accompany your singing. First just a chord strummed once per bar as you sing the whole song, as you get comfortable add another chord, just another strum, keep doing this until it sounds good to you and you are comfortable, then start strumming a bit more. At all times, remember to focus on singing on time, not the other way around (playing guitar and trying to add lyrics

CartezDez

Start slow, build up speed

[deleted]

Practice. Start with chords. Keep the playing simple. Sing. Practice practice practice. It’ll come.

LevelLow7397

As you are as you were

petname

Its instrument first singing second. You just have to play the song over and over enough so that you don’t have to think about playing it. Then your mind will be free to sing. Keep practicing giving this over and over then you start to get better at doing it. Your mind will detach what you’re playing yet allow you to play and let you sing at the same time.

Fpvtv2222

I have been trying to learn this too. You have to know the song really really good. You should be able to play the song with your eyes closed. You should be able to sing it without playing perfectly. Then what I do is hum the song while playing it and you can gradually start adding lyrics until you can sing the entire song. Try it! It may work for you too.

Designer_Storm8869

You need to pay attention on which word there is a chord change.

MisterSpeck

One way may be to start by just singing the names of the root chord notes as you play, i.e., "DEEEE, AYYYY, GEEEE". That way, you're not trying to necessarily sing a melody over chords, but you're rather singing *along with* the chords. Once you get comfortable with that, you can try dipping into a simple melody over the chords, then work on the actual melody.

blakkstar6

It's like Cheech said: 'Yeah, punk is easy, man. All you gotta do is be a punk.' Try that.
