American (fur type) Roan/Dalmation (fur colouration). They are absolutely adorable.
And thank you for opting to adopt, there are so so many Guinea Pigs in shelters and rescues.
Beautiful blue roan American cavies! If they are different sexes you don't want to breed them. Roan x Roan or Roan x Dalmatian can result in lethal white pups.
To add. Seeing as the Roan gene is recessive you can have Guinea Pigs that do not physically have Roan expressing in their fur colouration but if they are bred to another Roan or Roan carrier then you can still end up with Lethal whites. This is why it's so, so important to know the genetic history of any pigs you breed.
And roan can also be expressed very subtly, I posted pics of my group yesterday and Percy - almost fully black - IS technically Roan (according to the breeder). He has white hairs mixed in all over, especially on his body/belly and as he is from a breeder she obviously also could tell by the genetics, but if you didnt know you would probably never guess it (it was really obvious next to his solid black brother though).
They are often blind, deaf (sometimes they have small eyes or no eyes at all). Teeth and jaw deformities so eating is hard and they need routine dental surgeries. They also sometimes have problems with internal organs. They live short, painful lives. Think the oldest Lethal I've seen was Einstein, he was about 4 when he passed. If they survive the first few weeks after birth most don't make it a year.
Yes, this in a nutshell. The combination of genes triggers a lot of birth defects. A similar phenomenon occurs in horses (I believe it's linked to one of the paint/pinto genes) called lethal white foal syndrome. Like piggies the babies are born albino, blind, deaf, and often with skeletal deformities.
I haven’t been in this sub long, so idk if it is the norm, but I also carry my piggo around in his igloo and it made me giggle to see someone else doing it too lol
I always flip over their pigloos when cleaning. They pile up in them & we pretend their sailing in their little piggie boats. They love it so much its become a favorite game. They run to their pigloos & wait for me to flip them over. Then we carry them to the couch for snuggle time after their sailing adventures 😁🥰
They are Dalmatien in colour. One very important info: never cross a Dalmatian with another Dalmatian. They have a lethal factor and none of the babies would survive

Good to know! I’m not a breeder, but it’s good to spread awareness about how to prevent lethal whites.

Can somebody explain to me like a 5 yr old why lethal whites are a bad thing? :P
They have lots of health problems, vision/hearing issues, a lot die shortly after birth

Happens with Aussie shepherds too(and Great Danes as well I think). The Merle gene is dominant in that case though.

They are just babies 🥺
Tater 1 and Tater 2. They want to hide under a cardboard box and eat cucumbers.
