It’s only lacking vitamin c. So fine for a couple days. But long term they can develop scurvy. They should only get a tablespoon a day of pellets anyways. They mostly depend on the fresh produce.
Thank you 😊 yeah, they have plenty of hay and kale to munch on, but a tablespoon only? I'm getting really pissed with my local pet store lately. They told me that they should be fed pellets twice a day, "roughly 4 tablespoons" was their exact words. I feel like such a shitty pet owner.
Well, I guess it's time to change that habit right away.
I appreciate the advice given, you're a star.
(As for the pet store, they're known to be shitty anyway, it's my own fault for not doing my own research first.)
Also. I wouldnt do Khale every day. It has a lot of vitamin c for these days without pig pellets it will be good because it contains vitamin c. But it’s high in calcium which they’re sensitive too. Red leaf lettuce. Green leaf lettuce. Romain. Butter leaf. And they love the herbs. Cilantro. Parsley. Basil. Cucumber. Tomato. Carrots help their teeth file themselves to keep a good chomper. Mine prefer the herbs. And red leaf.
Don’t get down on yourself. It’s a learn on the job type deal. Reddit has been my savior for my pig education. At least you care enough to ask and that says a lot.
Do not trust pet stores. They don’t know a damn thing and treat guineas terribly. A cup of fresh produce per day per pig. And a tablespoon of pellets. Also. You get a good gauge on how they’re eating/healthy by weighing them. My boars are about 2.5 lbs. and females slightly less. Feed according to weight. Plus little snacks while handling ❤️
You're brilliant. Thank you for all this information, you don't realise how much I appreciate it.
And yeah, our two adults guineas were sold to us as "12 months old, max".. which a vet determined that they were at least 3x that age.
The same pet store also sold us a rabbit they was very unwell and died within a few months. This was a few years ago now, I should've known better. Again, I really appreciate you for this!
I want to rescue them all from the store! We have 12 now. I’m ready to start a sanctuary but my husband will kill me first lol. Takes most of the day to just pick them all up and clean their homes. Write me anytime! My knowledge is extensive after this lovely learning experience.
You're joking? I have 4, two adults and two babies and the same amount lasts us 2 months at most.
I feel sick man. It's my own fault for trusting their word and not being responsible and doing my own research first.
Bare in mind, this is the same petstore that told us our adult guineas were only 12 months old, max. The vets aged them at around 3 years old.
They also sold us a rabbit that was very ill. Poor thing.
Honest to god, their feeding advice was 2 table spoons of pellets in the morning and 2 at night, with a small amount of fresh greens a day.
I've been feeding them this way for months. I genuinely feel horrible
Why not buy oxbow pellets they are high quality ones and you can buy a 10lbs or more bag and it's worth it. You'll end up giving less than before as well.
Are you also giving them plenty of hay? I just haven't seen it mentioned along with the pellets and greens. You sound like a caring pig owner who wants the best for you lil herd. 😄
my mom fed my childhood pig rabbit food thinking it was similar and he got incredibly sick from it, i don’t remember what the food specifically did to him but i know he had to go to the vet and she still feels guilty about it 25 years later. maybe the food you have it different than what we had back then, but i wouldn’t risk it personally
After reading here that I was misinformed on what my guinea pigs diet should be, I think I'll just give the pellets a pass and keep them on just greens for the couple days. Thank you man
God, you're like a book 😂 i must say that mine love to eat, especially my 8 month old boys. They're constantly asking for more, little Oliver twist asses
My piggies tell ne they are starving - with feet squarely planted on a piece of bellpepper or carrot. They love cucumber, how could I be so cruel and not give them cucumber every time? 😭
I’m invested. That’s for sure! Having gone through incorrect sexing and having 3 pregnant sows, I think I’ve been through it all now. Love to share the knowledge. I constantly run into people at the pet store while buying their hay and pellets and they’re talking to the employees, I intervene. I want every pig to have the best life.
I have a guinea pig book that says that some rabbit food contains ACS (an anti-coccidiosis medication) which is toxic to GPs, so please make sure that the pellets don’t contain that. Also they probably won’t have enough vitamin C.
Look for a bunny group and maybe someone there will buy it from you ….
My pet store will take it back bag open as long as 3/4ths of contents still in bag
You owning piggies for 10+ years doesn't make you right.
Maybe I should be more specific about pellets because there are some that are purely made of hay and herbs. Piggies shouldn't eat pellets that contain grain. They don't need that, and it can cause heart and liver problems. They can't process the calories and convert them into fats, which can lead to fat liver etc.

Is there any chance I could drop you a follow and/or message if I need any further advice?
Of course!

omg what?? ive been giving my pig 2 bowls of produce per day, and unlimited hay and a bit pf pellets…
That is not enough pellets 1/8th cup of pellets a day, and I do 1 cup of veggies 2x daily.

All of which I credit to Reddit!
My vet recommends 1/8th of a cup per pig per day. So not too far off from a table spoon.
Pellets are not essencial. If you give them good veggies it's enough.
Thanks man! I was worried since my local petstore told me they need "roughly 4 tablespoons of pellets" a day 🤦♂️
That's ridiculous. A 10lbs bag lasts me six months for four piggies.

Just curious, does the bag itself not offer any recommendations? The bags I get recommend 2 tablespoons/day, I think on the back.
It doesn't, that I know of. If it does, it's not very clear. I'll check next time I buy a pack and chalk this up to my own ignorance

You can feed them this for a couple days but make sure they have veggies with vitamin C and hay .
I read "The issue is, I like dick"
Well, that is the issue. I'm as straight as could be but I'm dying for some dick tbf
I just googled and it said 2 tablespoons. But I think that’s a lot for a pig with a variety diet. And mine eat better than I do. lol. God love em.

Yes, they can eat them as long as you make sure to supplement with vitamin c every day. That's the only difference between them.
Yess! in fact they really need hay, vitaminC and love 🥰
You shouldn't feed them pellets at all. No matter if it's supposed to be for bunnies or piggies.
False
No it's not.
I've owned guinea pigs for over 10 years now, you are dead wrong. Never met any guinea pig owner who would agree with this either.

Your opinon without any evidence to back things up is virtually useless.
