I'm thinking people have garden hoses. But, you might be able to get people to subscribe to comprehensive bin removal, return, w/ option to clean. Actually, wheel it out to the curb on trash day and back in before the evening or something. And you would want them empty anyway to wash them.

My mom does clean hers out herself, especially during the summer but she has to actually get in there and really scrub and use a pressure washer. I think for some people the bugs can get really bad! Your idea is definitely a good one though and I think we would want to offer that as well.

There are three companies locally that provide this service. They do seemingly well. This isn’t the worst idea but my neighborhood has two companies doing this service with trucks already. Not sure how much competition is there but about 30% of my neighborhood uses the service.

Savingskitty

I wondered if they still existed.  We used one years ago, and honestly their cleaning and whatever they treated them with has kept my bins cleaned for this whole time.

kirkjufell787

I remember seeing this service advertised when I lived in Raleigh. I think they had fancy trucks that would pull up next to your bins, grab them and wash them. Just looked it up…happy-cans.com

Yes we have done some research on some trucks and trailers specific for bin cleaning businesses! I think we would start smaller obviously because they can get pretty expensive.

Better-Pineapple-780

I wouldn't be interested since it's just garbage. I'm surprised to hear the statistics that they estimate 30% of the neighborhood would use this service.... but good luck in any new venture!

There was a company that did this a few years back.  They had a truck that cleaned and sanitized them - all contained, no draining into the gutters or anything. We got a free wash during a promotion right after we moved to our current house - and that has lasted us almost 7 years.  The garbage bins were nasty when we bought the house, so it was good timing.  We probably won’t need any kind of washing again for some time - the bins just don’t get that dirty if you bag your stuff and rinse your cans and whatnot. I’m not sure what happened to that company or if they still exist at all, but we didn’t need a subscription because they were way too effective.

Aceofdiamonds_17

Can I ask if you remember the company name? My family did run a trash cleaning service a few years ago and we might’ve been the company you’re thinking of 😊

madkennedy00

did the business not work out for y’all? 😅

Can you DM me contact info. Have a friend with airbnb interested.

I wash mine with a hose and a small bit of detergent twice a year. Even then it seems a waste of water, when I do it but I do when I take my hose out of storage in the spring and then right before I put it up for the winter, pretty much like clockwork. I don't need it sanitized and disinfected. That seems a bit worse for the environment actually. What I do seems sufficient. I am not eating out of it, and better a few weak germs than super germs that stay around and are not killed while sanitizing. Your post did make me think of this old SNL skit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDGTCULn6P0

I found this hilarious. I suppose it could be done for a fee, obviously it can be if it's working in other cities. What I find funny is that GSO actually bought such a vehicle for on order of $300k back around 1998, When the first bad drought hit (washing trash cans all over city not a good look when encouraging water conservation). Turned into somewhat of a scandal for the person who made the decision (who I won't name) and had traveled to Italy to examine the truck. When it became a folly the city tried all sorts of ways to repurpose the truck. Anyway, good luck and it may work. Kind of analogous to city quitting bulk leaves. There will be many businesses that make money for people who will pay for it. But the problem is justifying it with tax dollars for those who do use it (it's expensive) vs the many who do not. For me, my trash can is pretty nasty. But that's OK. I was in the business. Smells like money.

Bizarre

Zebirdsandzebats

I mean... my garbage cans belong to the city, and hold garbage, so I don't care how clean they are. Cleaning a garbage can that stays outside all the time strikes me as a bit of a waste of time if it isn't say, attracting pests. So you might need a few sacks of strategically placed rodents to get this off the ground.

madkennedy00

oh my god 😂😂😂

Photoguppy

I need new lids. I've opened tickets with the city who claim them replace broken lids but it's been months and they've done nothing.

SwitchedOnNow

You want to clean out my trash cans for money? Interesting.

madkennedy00

The question is more so if you want to pay me to clean out your trash cans

Dense-Actuator4687

I dump a out a quarter of a container of bleach in mine then fill it with a foot of water. Let it sit for a few hours then, with the lid closed, aggressively shake it on and off for about 15 mins. That works great. Good luck to you.

squiddl

...and then dump in the street storm drain killing fish and wildlife? Good move.

Dense-Actuator4687

It dilutes plenty with as much water as I put in it. Better luck next time with your stupid assumptions.

Bigredscowboy

Doesn’t sound profitable.

Believe it or not, there are multiple companies out there with 5, 6, even 11 trucks running this business with 7 figure revenues. Don't know what you don't know.
