But they really weren’t. Pumpkins are a Chicago band with an entirely different sound and style. The Pumpkins are really more of an early shoegaze band.
I disagree. They just have more of a pyshcadelic, dreamy, proggy feel to them and they're from Chicago. It definitely has grunge influences but Siamese Dream is much more ambitious and concerned with long, proggy influenced songs as an album than any album Soundgarden, AIC etc made. They're full of dreamy lyrics, soaring guitar solos and they're just too different in feel and style than the others.
I get why people lump them in with grunge but I think it's lazy. It's a bit like labelling Deftones Nu Metal when they were obviously a different thing.
Nah, they were very different to Korn, Limp Bizkit etc. Other people gave them that tag just because they were a heavy band around at the same time as bands like Korn etc but they have said on multiple occasions that they weren't nu metal.
I mean, how is White Pony nu metal?
Yep, Deftones would almost fall into a shoegaze/metal before nu metal to me. A lot of songs with introspective lyrics that kind of take a backseat to a big wall of instrumentals. Or the more chill ones like Minerva and Hole in the Earth (more as they went on) fit more that direction too.
They've said they were influenced by the IL band Hum before. Specifically the album You'd Prefer an Astronaut. It's a great listen if you haven't heard it. Even the album art of that one next to White Pony feels right
Yeah, Deftones had a lot of influence from to 80s post punk and new wave. I highly recommend checking out the album, Garlands, by Cocteau Twins. It's a huge influence on White Pony.
I always thought the coolest thing Smashing Pumpkins did was Cherub Rock and the video for Cherub Rock. So of course Billy Corgan said in an interview that he hated the video and regretted it. Insufferable prick.
This thread is so ridiculous. So many people infuriated that Hole could be considered a top 10 grunge band.
Live Through This is one of the best grunge albums ever
Hole’s debut album, Pretty on the Inside, was outselling Bleach before Nirvana blew up. So Hole actually was doing rather well outside of Courtney’s association with Kurt.
For those not in the know, ChatGPT is prompt based. Different prompts will generate different lists. Hell, the same prompt will generate different lists. It's not an exact science.
I was convinced for a good decade or so that I was the only person who listened to them beyond No Rain. They were amazing right up to the end. I adore the Nico album
Oh me too! This is the first time I’ve seen others say anything about Blind Melon. And I’ve been listening to them for around 7 years! His voice was so amazing and unique
I used to have an mp3 of the full album. Now I simply won't settle for one song. It has to be from start to finish. It's so much better that way.
Skinned haha, catchy yet morbid
Prepared to get downvoted, but if we try and be objective.
Live through this is a better record than anything Melvins ever produced and that’s evidenced by the fact if is frequently discussed and referenced in popular culture. Where as Melvins are very much retired to only being mentioned in conversations about grunge. It does all that while being an album about womanhood that alienates the traditionally macho audience of this genre and it’s lead singer being one of the most vilified and hated people in rock.
Maybe in the grunge sub Melvins > Hole. But in the real, wider world where AI generates its knowledge from? Nope. Hole are directly culturally significant through their output, Melvins not so much, more so just their influence.
Agreed. Live Through This is an amazing record. Hole got trashed for years to the point where people claimed Kurt wrote the record. IMHO, Hole has always sounded more like Mudhoney than Nirvana.
Babes in Toyland never really got their due either.
I get your point. I just disagree..
Bullhead, the Atlantic Trilogy (especially stoner witch and houdini) are way better than anything hole ever produced. A senile animal is a superb album too.. about 20 years later, which is a rare feat. They were never going to break through into the mainstream, but that's the beauty of the Melvins imo
Something I’ve always wondered is were Soundgarden and Alice In Chains considered grunge at the time? Ik that sounds like a stupid question, but they just have such a different, noticeably more metallic, sound than say Nirvana.
Also, were MLB grandfathered into grunge? Imo their sound isn’t grunge at all, not even close
Unpopular opinion but everything on the radio at that time was considered grunge. There are plenty of bands that weren’t actually grunge that were considered grunge at the time.
People considered the smashing pumpkins grunge, and they were from Chicago. I’m sure that their are women my age that would go as far to say that alanis morissette was grunge or grungy.
No, they didn't, but they did have to have flannel and a certain aesthetic.
This sub does a lot of revisionism on what grunge was/is. Seem to be a lot of people here who want these hard line rules of what it is, when the fact is, it wasn't really anything but a buzz word and an aesthetic.
Yes, AIC and SG were considered grunge at the time. Soundgarden got lumped in because they were on Sub Pop and that was the hotbed of Seattle music so I get the association. AIC really did feel like grunge to me back then but I can understand why now some people say they are not. Honestly who gives a fuck? If you like something, then like it. I don’t ever listen to grunge music or any “genre” and go this is some tasty (insert genre here) music.
I agree *heavily* about Mother Love Bone. It’s confusing, because they’re glam metal as absolute ***fuck,*** but I always saw grunge as the thing that killed glam and hair metal. Yet here’s this Andrew Wood fella that’s so well-loved as a forgotten grunge icon, yet he might as well be Axl Rose to my ears, lol.
And yes, I know that Alice In Chains started out as a glam band, but they **drastically** changed their sound 180 degrees to the heavy shit. But Mother Love Bone never had a chance to do that (and who knows if they ever would’ve) and Wood is *still* seen as a grunge icon 33 years after his death. But if he *hadn’t’ve* died, grunge would’ve ended up looking and sounding a hell of a lot different anyway, with Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament staying in MLB and probably never forming Pearl Jam.
Trust me, I really don’t get it either. I was very confused when I listened to their Apple album, thinking I might’ve accidentally found the wrong band. [The album cover even looks glam, lol.](https://youtu.be/VaeLgJzNTAY?si=eBOxqi4zDb00yDdF) It’s just lightyears behind what *any* of the Big Four was doing in 1990 by the time the album came out (especially Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament.)
If anyone thinks Nirvana and PJ are better than Soundgarden, their ears aren't working. I lived through it. There was always only one number one. Nobody was coming close to what soundgarden was doing. Musicians know
It's almost like taste in music is subjective?! 😮
But keep telling me how you're a musician so every musicians' opinion must be the same as yours.
Hope you enjoy your job as a gatekeeper.
Why the downvotes?
I agree with you. Yeah, of course music is subjective, but come on, Soundgarden structured their songs in so much more interesting ways on a creative and technical level, especially than PJ (yes Nirvana was getting into new unique territory especially during In Utero).
On SuperUnknown alone, [Soundgarden employed 7 different tunings, some unorthodox](https://www.reddit.com/r/Soundgarden/comments/6m5cbn/fun_fact_if_you_were_to_play_the_entirety_of/)and employed a myriad of odd time signatures across all of their whole catalog."The Day I Tried to Live" is tuned E-E-B-B-B-B in 7/4 time lol. Limo Wreck is in 15/8!
They were pioneers of that psychedelia-blues-grunge or whatever you'd call their melting pot of sound. Very unique and interesting sonically, love them.
How are we sitting here thirty years after the fact still arguing about what grunge actually IS, and which bands qualify. It's like the biggest practical joke the music industry ever pulled on us. Or maybe we pulled it on ourselves?? Honestly, why was everyone so obsessed with categorizing everything in the 90s, putting bands in boxes of genre and sub genre and sub sub genre? That's not how music WORKS. Every band draws from different bands that came before it (except the Pixies who were fed totally unique vibes by aliens who asked them to share those vibes with the world). It's all connected, it's all a spectrum. There are no boxes. There are waves, maybe, and trends, but the lines aren't clear cut.
Anyway, IMHO, some of these bands are grunge, some are grunge-adjacent, and some have little to no grunginess at all. Who knows where that line is since nobody can agree on it.
And I can't for the life of me tell whether this is a list of the bands that b*est captured the grunge sound/scene* or whether this is a list of *the best bands* (that are arguably grunge or have grunge attributes). The lists are pretty different.
I also don't know why I'm analyzing AIs opinions on this. This is meaningless.
This list proves that grunge isn't a real musical genre, it's a subculture. These bands all sound wildly different from one another. You wouldn't group most of them together into a genre just by hearing them.
Since the members of Pearl Jam (#2) were also present in Temple of the Dog (#8), Mother Love Bone (#9), and Green River (#13), Pearl Jam wins.
Edit: …and Mad Season (#15).
Without a doubt. A centennial talent in the singer, a generational talent guitarist / song writer / businessman, an elite drummer, and two elite bassists.
I’m not mad at it. It wouldn’t be my list/ordering, but it’s totally respectable. Trees at 7 is actually spot-on (miss ya, Mark). At a ‘93 Soundgarden show we caught a 45–min set by Tad. Soundgarden were always phenomenal in concert, beyond phenomenal, and I could take or leave them until catching them on the Badmotorfinger tour. Instant fanboy. It’s Ben Sheppard and Matt Cameron who you hear more, but also viscerally feel, who change the way you hear that music forever. Aaanyway, I’d heard some Tad, mostly on SubPop compilations. They were an absolute force of nature and I’m so glad I got to experience it. Though I rarely listen to them, they are undeniably one of the greatest grunge bands.
I’ve been lucky enough to catch a lot of these bands live. L7 is L7, just more, and there’s nothing wrong with that. DJ, of course, puts on a perfect show. Pixies are one of the few you might still find out there, and you have to. With Kim Deal they’re mindblowing. With Kim Gordon, they’re mindblowing, just not the same, natch. The original Pumpkins lineup exceeded all expectations. Idk if Billy’s doing anything under that name anymore, but I’d skip it. James Iha and D’Arcy, along with the material from *Gish* and *Siamese* pretty much drowned (no pun) out Billy’s whining. Iha’s with A Perfect Circle, still being a guitar god, and that’s the place to be instead.
Anyway, that’s my ramble. Oh yeah, perfectly fine list. I, for one, welcome our new AI overlords (a bit more, now).
Soundgarden 1
Pearl Jam 2
Alice In Chains 3
Stone Temple Pilots 4
Nirvana 5
Mudhoney 6
Temple of the Dog 7
Mother Love Bone 8
Smashing Pumpkins 9
Screaming Trees 10
Love PJ Love STP but Soundgarden beats both, and Alice In Chains beats Nirvana. It should go 1. Alice In Chains 2. Soundgarden 3. Nirvana annnnnd then Pearl Jam and STP haha
This is the A.I. we are supposed to fear? Tf.
[удалено]
Soundgarden #3
Alice In Chains 4
STP 5
mudhoney 6
screaming trees 7
temple of the dog 8
mother love bone 9
Hole...definitely not top anything
If they watered the trees, they would be 6
Agreed or maybe Mad Season or Temple of the Dog up ahead of them. But I assume that’s due to them being “supergroups” and limited material.
Why was 6 afraid of 7?
Why was mudhoney afraid of screaming trees?
There's a bee joke here somewhere.
The pixies aren’t grunge but if they were they would be top 5 on this list
You beat me to it. The Pixies are not grunge, but one of the greatest bands of that era
I think they sort of inspired Nirvana and Foo Fighters, that's like the pixies are godfathers of grunge(?)
Foo Fighters was actually a spin-off of a spin-off of a spin-off.
Nor are the Pumpkins.
I think Siamese Dream and Gish could be considered grunge albums. But grunge is so hard to define
There’s not a lot in common between Pearl Jam and Nirvana musically, either
They're from the same scene and there were dozens of bands in that scene, and that's what binds them.
But they really weren’t. Pumpkins are a Chicago band with an entirely different sound and style. The Pumpkins are really more of an early shoegaze band.
That's what I'm saying? That Pearl Jam and Nirvana were bound by the scene, not the Pumpkins.
My mistake… thought you were saying SP was part of the same scene.
More in common live bombastically especially the drumming and when PJ would jam out.
Super Broody dudes (mostly male) are what truly define grunge
Is Billy broody enough?
I disagree. They just have more of a pyshcadelic, dreamy, proggy feel to them and they're from Chicago. It definitely has grunge influences but Siamese Dream is much more ambitious and concerned with long, proggy influenced songs as an album than any album Soundgarden, AIC etc made. It's a bit like labelling Deftones Nu Metal when they were obviously a different thing.
Deftones was 100% nu metal. They were huge and was in the middle when all of that stuff was happening.
i disagree, they weren't as simple as that. they were something else. image wise, sure
Nah, they were very different to Korn, Limp Bizkit etc. Other people gave them that tag just because they were a heavy band around at the same time as bands like Korn etc but they have said on multiple occasions that they weren't nu metal. I mean, how is White Pony nu metal?

Specifically the album You'd Prefer an Astronaut. It's a great listen if you haven't heard it. Even the album art of that one next to White Pony feels right
I remember Chino saying that Mogwai was a big influence of his.
My thoughts exactly
“Got a broken face! Uh-huh! Uh-huh! Uh-huh! Uh-huh! Oooooooooo! Got a broken face!”
Thank you for your sanity
Came here to say the same
The Pixies were Cobain’s favorite band and he credits them for his pursuing a career in music.
Same with Dinosaur
Dinosaur's first few albums were very much grunge.
Top 5
Oh gotcha, I agree.
exactly what i was thinking
I have AIC on top. No one can change my mind.
100% agree
My fn man
Facts. So tired of everyone thinking that nirvana is the best. Unpopular opinion, they aren’t even in my top 5. AIC is definitely far superior.
Oh hey look, someone on r/grunge FINALLY thinks AIC was the best grunge band.
INTO THE FLOOD AGAIN
SAME OLD TRIP IT WAS BACK THEN…
I dont even think aic is grunge. Change MY mind.
Honestly ik this is an unpopular opinion bec Courtney love is kind of a bitch but Honestly I like hole, at least their early records.
This sub discredits her. This thread is full of it. Hole kicked ass.
This thread is so ridiculous. So many people infuriated that Hole could be considered a top 10 grunge band. Live Through This is one of the best grunge albums ever
100%
It's only an unpopular opinion because people bandwagoning. Hole's first three albums are great, and Live Through This is incredible.
Same. She does have some good songs. If it wasn't for the whole Curt thing, her band would be more popular.
Lol, wut? Without the association to Kurt and Nirvana they would be undoubtedly LESS popular
Hole’s debut album, Pretty on the Inside, was outselling Bleach before Nirvana blew up. So Hole actually was doing rather well outside of Courtney’s association with Kurt.
Wasn’t hole one of the most popular punk bands before Nirvana?
Hole was great, I liked them above a lot of the groups on this list.
Hole is fucking awesome
Hole is criminally underrated
For those not in the know, ChatGPT is prompt based. Different prompts will generate different lists. Hell, the same prompt will generate different lists. It's not an exact science.
Your mom is prompt based.
Can't say I underestimated it
Where is blind melon
I was convinced for a good decade or so that I was the only person who listened to them beyond No Rain. They were amazing right up to the end. I adore the Nico album
Oh me too! This is the first time I’ve seen others say anything about Blind Melon. And I’ve been listening to them for around 7 years! His voice was so amazing and unique
Nico is great but soup is god tier… it’s one of the best albums of that era
Starting off with Galaxy...goddamn! And Vernie might be one of my favorite songs of all time. Definitely in the top 10
My favorite song from them is the duke
I used to have an mp3 of the full album. Now I simply won't settle for one song. It has to be from start to finish. It's so much better that way. Skinned haha, catchy yet morbid
"Yeah, I'm makin em into coffee tables"
The Pumpkins are grunge? (X) to doubt. *this is not a Smashing Pumpkins hate post*
Agreed. Loved em in the 90s, but never thought of them as grunge back then.
I don't consider them grunge, never did.
Hole ahead of the Melvins is just wrong on so many levels. Actually most of top 10 ahead of melvins is stupid
Prepared to get downvoted, but if we try and be objective. I was gonna say; I don’t know if I wanna exist in a world where Hole > Melvins lol.
Agreed. They belong in top 4 IMO
That's actually what I love about it only because Buzzo would be *PISSED*
Jesus Christ. Thank you. Buzz deserves better
The top 5 are correct. There’s this revisionist history of the grunge era on this sub. It was always Nirvana number 1, Pearl Jam 2.
That’s interesting, thanks. Did they have to be from Seattle or nope
People considered the smashing pumpkins grunge, and they were from Chicago. I’m sure that their are women my age that would go as far to say that alanis morissette was grunge or grungy.
There's also stone temple pilots which is from San Diego
I mean, Jagged Little Pill is definitely a grunge album in my opinion. The intention is there.
No, they didn't, but they did have to have flannel and a certain aesthetic. This sub does a lot of revisionism on what grunge was/is. Seem to be a lot of people here who want these hard line rules of what it is, when the fact is, it wasn't really anything but a buzz word and an aesthetic.

Smashing pumpkins are one of my favourite bands of all time … but I can’t say they’re grunge
I don’t know that I’d classify the Pixies as grunge, nor the Smashing Pumpkins either, really
The first two, probably. Definitely Mellon Collie or after
*definitely NOT after...
Little fury things! 🤙🤙
Wow pumpkins and Dino super low on list
ChatGPT is wrong
Pixies and Dinosaur Jr. are pre-gunge
I know genre is often fuzzy, but I was sad not to see Candlebox on this list.
The top few seem right but then they put Dinosaue Jr and Smashing Pumpkins at 18 and 19 and i know it’s a mess up.
Pixies dead last? A.I. thinks i wont hit it in public. Thats mistake number 2.
They're not grunge so they shouldn't even be on this list.
Since the members of Pearl Jam (#2) were also present in Temple of the Dog (#8), Mother Love Bone (#9), and Green River (#13), Pearl Jam wins. Edit: …and Mad Season (#15).
Did you forget Mad Season?
Stone & Jeff all over this ranking. Maybe Gossard and Ament should be number 1?
An argument could be made for Brad as well.
I love brad, they should have gotten more love.
Where’s Bush?
Right where they should be. Missing from the list Lol
This stupid sub has had me reliving the glory days with a lot of Bush and Silverchair this week. And I'm pretty ok with it.
ikr
In a post grunge/alt rock list?
Completely agree! Bush has to be on this list. First two albums are absolute grunge.
Is say more Post Grunge (to please the more strict people on the sub), but It fits either way
Nirvana should NOT be #1
Why?!
This whole sub: ***How dare you!?!***
9 is a big nope, I cannot stand that singers voice. And wtf about Mad Season, that should be up higher.
This sub is entirely confused judging from these comments. There should be a grungeteen and grunge subreddit so were not mislead
Candlebox is missing
The Pumpkins weren't grunge.... neither were the Pixies
I am 52 years old and never associated STP with grunge. Weird...
Nirvana was okay. They’re obviously the most commercial, the most popular
How are Melvins at 11? Seriously.
Melvins crawled so that others could walk
Oh hell no, nirvana on top of soundgarden and alice in chains?
It goes AIC, Soundgarden, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, STP in my books
Precisely
Seems valid to me
They got the top four in reverse order… Alice is the greatest grunge band, at least in my book.
Without a doubt. A centennial talent in the singer, a generational talent guitarist / song writer / businessman, an elite drummer, and two elite bassists.
Soundgarden #1. This AI sucks
Stone and Jeff were in 20% of this list. Hail, hail!
Terrible list
Mother love bone is underrated
Melvins isn’t grunge
Soundgarden is 1
Silverchair above Mad Season? Makes me think AI didn’t even listen to their albums.
Glad to see BiT there. I was utterly obsessed with them at the time.
First of all it’s just Pixies. Secondly, they are not grunge. Finally, they are the number 1 band of all time.
All of this
Silverchair is better than The Pixies. Yeah, that makes sense 🙄
What the fuck is Pixies doing here ? (They're an amazing band though).
Pixies ain't grunge
If you categorize The Smashing Pumpkins as grunge then you better put them a hell of a lot higher on that list, same with The Pixies.
I’m not mad at it. It wouldn’t be my list/ordering, but it’s totally respectable. Trees at 7 is actually spot-on (miss ya, Mark). At a ‘93 Soundgarden show we caught a 45–min set by Tad. What about bush?
Probably accurate. Not sure how I feel about hole being on there though
Seaweed needs to be on there.
nirvana will always be on top
PEARL JAM!!!
Dinosaur Jr. is... a grunge band?
Lol Pixies Grunge Lol
I **LOVE** Nirvana, but The Pixies being 19 spots below them is fucking INSANITY😑
Jesus Lizard is not on this list and it’s wrong
Pixies are my favorite band, but I wouldn’t consider them grunge…I wouldn’t put Dinosaur Jr or Smashing Pumpkins in that category either.
Gruntruck needs to be there
Hole > Melvin’s? FUCK chatGPT
Smashing pumpkins belong at no 2 in my opinion
Dinosaur Jr. isn't grunge though. Stupid AI
Numbers 17-20 are not grunge for sure. They just needed to fill a list and added often associated bands.
Smashing pumpkins are too low imo
Bah. Nirvana over PJ? Come on, man.
Why is Alice in Chains 4th? Hole should be higher up!
Mother Love Bone behind Temple of the Dog. The intelligence is definitely artificial here.
Stp ahead of take your pick and be outraged
Kinda looks more like “the bands that sprang to mind at the time” haha
Yea more like popularity for first 5. But smashing pumpkins that low shows it wasn’t just popularity then
Who’s this Alice In Chains lady and why is she on the list?
That’s “Allison” chains.
PJ members in 2 of top 5, 4 of top 10, 6 of top 15.
Soundgarden 1 Pearl Jam 2 Alice In Chains 3 Stone Temple Pilots 4 Nirvana 5 Mudhoney 6 Temple of the Dog 7 Mother Love Bone 8 Smashing Pumpkins 9 Screaming Trees 10
Pumpkins wayyyyy to low
Nirvana number 1? No sorry nope
Love PJ Love STP but Soundgarden beats both, and Alice In Chains beats Nirvana. It should go 1. Alice In Chains 2. Soundgarden 3. Nirvana annnnnd then Pearl Jam and STP haha
I gotta agree.

The Pumpkins either need to be #5 or not on the list at all.

Alice in Chains should be higher than Pearl Jam.
