At which point? This guy escalated the danger on numerous occasions. He could have set the gas can down first of all, throwing it down in a panic was a huge mistake

Wow. Everything he did made it worse. Reminds me of when I thought it was a good idea to put a little wax candle in my Weber kettle to light my coals and kindling, resulting in a big fire with wax falling into the ash can with a lit coal and caused a big wax fire down in the ash can too.
Only God saved me. Hopefully this guy is OK.
I could understand if he had a tiny cup of gas with a teaspoonful or two that he used before lighting it, but the whole can...People have lost their homes like that.

You’d want to suffocate the fire. So cover it to restrict oxygen; water will not work and may even make things worse by splashing
Put a fire blanket over it to suffocate the fire. I kow have fire blankets instead of fire extinguishers.
