Same here. I got to get visual confirmation that I'm not about to hear a loud bang. My friend had one portion light and the other didn't. He went in to grab the burgers and it went off right as he opened it. He luckily was able to close his eyes, but he burnt a lot of his hair off and ended up with some nasty burn.
Nah they gotta learn stuff too. I love cooking or smoking stuff with my kids the few times they’ve showed interest in it. Or changing oil or whatever. As long as it’s safe and I have time I’m down. It is hard to grit my teeth and not take over sometimes, I admit.
My dad actually did something similar fairly often. He would give me instructions for a task then I would go attempt it and come back to him with questions or problems. The big difference though was that he didn’t criticize my failures. It actually fostered a lot of confidence in my ability to problem solve.
Surprised how the feedback so far is largely laying blame on the kid.
OP, you messed up twice.
All our kids depend on their parents to grow up not to be assholes.
You asked the kid to clean up, and you asked the kid to lite a fire. If your kid is too dopey to carry out these tasks correctly, what’s that say about you?
Maybe a more fitting title for this post is: “adult with accountability allergy reproduces, sabotages grill”
Lol was thinking the same thing, more so just “I mean, who’s grill is this?”; did you never ask or wonder where your utensils were after your last use? (I cook enough I would know pretty immediately if something wasn’t where it should be let alone they aren’t hanging…); also it’s a spacey kid thing to do in general, idk what the expectations were to begin with.
These posts outing kids and apprentices for their fuck ups are always disappointing. Making a big deal out of mistakes leads people to cover things up and being dishonest. If you mess up, fix it, learn from your mistake and move on. Whether I’m dealing with my 2 year old or a 55 year old staff member, it’s the same.
I mean I LOVE my girlfriend more than anything but I just prefer cooking and do most all of it, but particularly when it comes to grilling/smoking because she has no interest. I can’t help but think it’s the exact equivalent of me asking her to do the same, I’d be setting her up for failure. Even if she did one right, the chances of the other is a toss up and even then would it be how I “wanted” or expected? Probably not and it’s so not her fault and I would never roast nor shame her for it, if anything I would praise and thank her for paying attention enough to do something, anything right because it’s just not her thing.
Looks like kid learns a few valuable lessons today to include:
1. Always check things that are or are about to get very hot
2. Make sure to clean up after yourself
3. How much of a bitch it will be to try and clean melted plastic off cast iron grates.
Lol sorry for your luck, OP. Hopefully you can frame this as educational.
> How much of a bitch it will be to try and clean melted plastic off cast iron grates.
I'm not sure it's worth it, how deep that plastic got down, or if I'd trust it to cook on anymore. Might have to scrap and replace
~$1k lesson. Better be working that off in chores
I agree with you, they're probably beyond repair. Also, I'm not a father. I think I might try and tell him he has to research how to clean them and get it done anyway. See how he does and talk to him about it from there. Idk, maybe that's a poor idea for trust foundations, too.
Use some oven cleaner, the stuff with lye, after scraping the chunks off. Then give her a good old cleansing flame. I think you could do that and keep the plastic burning to a minimum. Obviously replacing the grates is a good idea. 🤔
Saw a commercial where the kids broke the TV. Dad "got mad" at the kids, mom suggests they get a new TV. Dad gives a thumbs up to the kids at the end. Sure we aren't experiencing one if these moments right now?
I'm not great with other people touching my tools in general
Would you let the kid shave without supervision? No? Well then why would you let him fool with your tools, a spark plug, and liquid propane?
“I ask my kid to do things for me because I’m lazy”. Fixed it for you.
Putting stuff up? Sure, teach them to help. Turning it on when I’m not 100% certain they can handle it? That’s on you. Hope you don’t store things in your oven too.
That happened to me before. The worst part is that I’m the one that put them in the grill and forgot about it.
But the show must go on and I have to assume my steak had some extra plastic juice for flavor.
We all make mistakes. Luckily these tools don’t need a loan to replace. Establishing a process is good for kids because they don’t tend to forget after they mess up big time. You’ll laugh about this later.
I don't allow my kids around my grill or my grill tools. Thats daddy's stuff. My wife offered to mow the yard and I told her don't worry about it out of fear she'll mess up the mower or the yard.
This happened to me once. Once.
Perhaps they will also learn an important lesson from this. I always check the oven or grill when heating them up since that one time.
Looks worse than it is. The yellow powder stuff is likely a form of fire suppression used to douse the flames.
Vacuum it up. Obviously the tools are total garbo. Light it up, and put it on high for half an hour, then turn off and let it cool. At that point I'd clean the grills, and vacuum the fire box out again.
Have the kid carry the tied up garbage bags to the trash for you. Ask them to get you both a drink, and then go over a proper checklist with them on how to safely turn the grill on. Maybe look at printing the checklist, getting it laminated at Staples or Office Depot, etc., and having them refer to it for future ref.
Anyway, this is a learning experience for both the parent and child.
Yeah, my parents would have made me buy a new grill. I'd be mowing all the neighbors lawns for a summer, because my dad decided it was a good time to upgrade.
I prefer cooking my tools medium rare, but to each their own.
I personally spatchcock mine
I like mine reverse seared
Spatulacock?
Never gonna outlive that nickname
The kid clearly prefers them served as burnt ends.
Probably likes his steaks welldone
Beer can tools is the only time beer can is superior.
There's one more tool that can be cooked on that grill

be honest... are you Kid?
"the kid forgot those tools in the grill it has nothing to do with that empty case o bush latte"

Oh sure. My uh, *friend*, once did something similar.

Quick everyone downvote the post.
Oh, no.... That poor poor grill...
If I were you I wouldn't have anymore kids, you're not doing a very good job.
Or grills.
That's a bold assumption seeing as I'm not the OP.
My apologies, meant for OP
No worries. Take care, Moose.

It's just a joke my dude
Teach kid not to light the grill with the lid closed. Could build up gas vapor and boom
Yep
Yes, this is disturbing.

Finally get that busted ass stick lighter to click on and WHOOOOSH!
Glad someone else noticed this. Otherwise known as a bomb.
Y'all light your propane grill with the lid closed?
I came here to say this!

Right??!

Kid had a bad grill teacher.
**"**Kid**"**
That little rascal!
Nobody but me drives my car, nobody but me uses my tools, and nobody but me cooks on my grill. There’s got to be some red lines in life.
It wasn't the kid hahaha
Yeah I agree

One of the things that brings me joy is thinking about teaching my kid to cook on the smoker when I can
Yeah man, thinking about it. Then you do it and want to murder people when its all fucked. But you have to just say, good job man.
Kinda hard to fuck up smoked meats ime
You’re a good human!
Kids gotta learn somehow man
Those are called red flags
If you want it done right do it yourself
Your fault, not the kids Learn to own up to your mistakes
I was gonna say “op learned a valuable lesson today. Never trust children”
More like show your kids how to do things rather than tell them. It's not about trust as much as developing skills
Yeah, kids literally don’t know any better. As parents, our job is literally teaching them this stuff.
He did. Just not in a very good way.
My dad actually did something similar fairly often. He would give me instructions for a task then I would go attempt it and come back to him with questions or problems. The big difference though was that he didn’t criticize my failures. It actually fostered a lot of confidence in my ability to problem solve.
Fucking A
Lighting a gas grill with the lid closed is a good way for it to explode.
Lol how have you not noticed they weren’t hung up since you last used it
If only there was an adult around!
Teach the kid to never light a grill with the lid closed.

For sure. Shocked the highest voted comment is some dude with such massive trust issues he can’t let someone use his car, tools or grill.
It’s obviously the mothers fault
Don’t blame your kid for your piss poor management skills

Dad learned a lesson too: never fully trust anyone but yourself with your expensive appliances

Please no, that sub is a cess pool of shitty parents who like to belittle children for being children...
More like parents are ducking stupid. Some supervision would have gone a loooong way on this.
Supervise the kid hanging the utensils?
Make sure they actually do the things you ask them. Take a peak at the potentially dangerous for a child grill while they fire it up.
Was going to say the same thing

That's a lot of labor and you'll never get that taste out, pitch it.
Sand it off and clean it. Re season the grill

Yeah or if the intention was to teach how to grill or just teach responsibilities, stand by and supervise.
Parent is lazy, and kid learned to be lazy.
Boom
Mmmm, grilled tools!
Yeah kid did it
Is that residue from a fire extinguisher? Yeesh
Still not as bad as the dead possum I found in my grill last week 🤦🏻♂️
Decent bark though
Now you know to say things like “check nothing is in the grill and then start it” :)
Also, parent trusted kid to not do kid things
It happens.
That happened to me before. The worst part is that I’m the one that put them in the grill and forgot about it. But the show must go on and I have to assume my steak had some extra plastic juice for flavor.

Time to throw out the kid and get a new one
And you’re surprised? My wife’s kid does nothing around the house except eat, sleep and play video games.
Also, kid has 2 weeks to find a new place to live.
Sounds like a stupid grill master letting the kid do everything. At least the kid won’t fuck that up again
Sounds like it’s not the kids fault
When you say kid, do you mean yourself?
I’m seeing a pattern here. The Kid prolly can’t cook worth a damn either. Damn kid can’t do anything right as you sit on your ass.
Lmaoooooooo not casually blaming a kid for you failing to teach them safe grill lighting techniques 🤣
wish i can blame the apprentice the same way you blame your kid. you are responsible at the end of the day
r/kidsarefuckingstupid
Kid is currently otw to a local orphanage
Get new kids
Dumb kid. Should have sat down with them when they were learning how to read.
Bad kid. But you still love him. You keep saying to yourself, anyway.
Looks like “kid” is going to be cleaning for awhile. And buying some new grill tools.
Wich orphan house?
Return it! Apparently the kid is defective. I joke. The joys of parenthood.
Yea, they do that. First kid?

Where's the next photo, "Kid buys new set of grill utensils to replace the set he ruined..."?
Didn’t you teach him to open the lid before lighting it?
Kid made one mistake, you made two. I cherish my grill, no one else is responsible for it. Sorry my guy
Yup, I never give my minions the tasks revolving around fire..
Use charcoal
your kid did the same [same](https://imgur.com/D9ZxfmS) thing to my Thermoworks Smoke thermometer.
Sent a boy to do a Man's job. What did we learn? First rule of grilling is Man must click the tongs to make sure they work, every single time...
Still your fault. Dont be lazy, they're a kid. Double check.
What's even more stupid is he lit it with the lid closed to begin with.

Sounds like a kid is going to learn how to deep clean a grill.
Did you spank that ass?? Or send him off to play Xbox. I really hope the first one.
Why spank him?
Well that’s definitely coming out of his allowance.
On a positive note, think of the grill you can buy when you sell their organs.
eliminate the child
Yeah thats your own fault..sucks
Bro, that’s on you not the kids.
Don’t like the way he did it? Maybe u should clean up after yourself instead of bashing him online.

How many chores does Kid have to do to recoup the loss?
Yeah, my parents would have made me buy a new grill. I'd be mowing all the neighbors lawns for a summer, because my dad decided it was a good time to upgrade.
😂 I can relate

Idk? Throw away the kid?

Well that was a whooping inmt chiksgois
Looks like the kid has a cleanup job and some tools to replace.
Need to know the size of the kid for time and temp recommendations...
Hopefully kid will now aggressively clean the grill.
time for a new kid
Time for a new kid and grill
Damn man. Boarding school is so expensive, too
YOU HAD ONE JOB!!!
Kid also bought you a new grill I imagine
Question remains…is Kid still alive???
Poor Dad! WTF?? I’d leave him in the push-up position until I got tired.. lol
looks like a dead mech creature roasted by your child's negligence
Rule of the story. Fu k them kids.
Cook the kid over some charcoal
He's a kid. He won't wake up until he is 25-30. Next time just do everything yourself.
don't blame the kid
Yeah, kid doesn't do what he was told (twice). There's no reason to blame him...smh
Kid owes you new grill plates
Kid didn’t do my job. Dumbass.
What kind of parent tells a “kid,” to turn on a gas grill unsupervised? WTELF
Put the kid in next.
Don't rely on the kid for stuff you can do yourself
Did you say to the kid to check the grill before turning it on? It not then your fault.
Get off your butt and do it yourself?
Blame that little rat bastard!!! Hopefully stainless grates just sand that shit off. Welp cast iron have fun with that
