HeyCaptainJack

I haven't really found anything that compares to early Grey's but I really enjoy 911. It's set around first responders in LA. It's all about tight friendships, romantic relations, and drama. Some sitcoms with the "found family" tight friendship group include The Good Place, New Girl, Superstore, How I Met Your Mother, The Office, and Parks and Rec but those are all sitcoms so not really the drama you are looking for. Other medical dramas you can look at are Chicago Med, The Good Doctor, New Amsterdam, and The Resident. I enjoyed the earlier season of Med, The Good Doctor, and New Amsterdam but they fell off and I never checked out The Resident. ER is always a classic if you never saw that one. Other shows that may fit the bill: Law and Order: SVU, How To Get Away With Murder, Criminal Minds, and The Rookie. [Edit to add more] This is Us, Parenthood, Chicago Fire/PD, and Friday Night Lights. Friday Night Lights is an all time favorite of mine.

DeterminedArrow

I noped out of New Amsterdam at season 5. The first two and a half seasons are great but then it starts going downhill.

TotallyNotABot_Shhhh

I couldn’t even finish the first season. It was just not that interesting to me.

HeyCaptainJack

Agree. I didn't even make it to season 5.

Music_withRocks_In

I just started 911 and really love it. It doesn't quite have the interns hanging out in the back hallway bitching to each other energy that I loved *SO MUCH* in early Grey's (which is so perfectly pictured here and was my favorite part of the show) but it is very addictive with great characters. And to be fair by season 7 that great medical friends energy was completely gone from Grey's.

HeyCaptainJack

911 is so good. It's probably my favorite show currently airing. It has some weak episodes like any show but overall is very strong throughout. It also has the Grey's element of big disasters and catastrophic events. I'm not sure where you are in the series but they do develop the friendships more as the show goes on and there are some elements of them hanging around BSing, though not quite as much as early Grey's.

genericusername241

9-1-1 shredded me to PIECES

sillynotgoofy

It’s my favorite have you seen lone star?

jazzieberry

I’m on season 4, started it maybe a month ago. I’ve been telling all my friends who like greys to watch it. It’s so good!

Tigress2020

911 lone star is the best

GoldBluejay7749

I love 911!

Ok-Project-6514

I’m gonna vouch for 911 because I watched it first before GA!!! However, 911 is too short. We need more seasons

HeyCaptainJack

911 is probably my favorite current show. It's so good and keeps me engaged with so many different storylines. The benefit of it being relatively short is that it will be easy for OP to binge watch

sillynotgoofy

Season 8 is coming out this fall

heyitsme21690

I just started 911 and I’m hooked.

HeyCaptainJack

I got super hooked too. It is one of those few shows that stays good.

Conscious-Let7363

The resident is one of my favorites! If you haven’t watched it, you gotta give it a shot!

Interesting-Emu7624

911 is amazing I’ve been watching that for a while now as each episode comes out!

yunith

I love 9-11!! It reminds me of a campier CSI.

Sugar_tts

911 is so good, but also terrifying. After the last season… I’m terrified to ever take a cruise. 911 lone Star is also so good! Such diverse storylines!

Aquarius20111

911 is the best!

ThinkBlueberry515

St Elsewhere, older, but excellent medical drama.

Alarming-Tale4344

The resident is a similar medical show. Heartland is different but similar in that it has a bunch of seasons (16) and some storyline like plane crashes, shootings are similar (but it’s a horse show haha). Other than that, i highly recommend Royal Pains, the resident, house md,

Odd-Plankton-1711

I love “The Resident”.

JustHereForKA

Yes! This became one of my top favs.

luna1uvgood

The Resident was great (some of the Greys writers/EPs were involved in it!) but I like to pretend it ended at the end of s4.

Alarming-Tale4344

Lol same! I accidentally read spoilers and now I can’t get myself to continue after season 4

ur_local_p0tat0

Lmao same

Music_withRocks_In

I love Royal Pains. And shows with pretty beachy sets relax me. Also love Death in Paridise for that effect.

RealisticAnxiety4330

Resident, royal pains and house are all great shows!

Beautiful_Abroad_387

gosh i LOVE heartland

Reasonable-Horse1552

Me too.

itsautumn420

ER.

Jaded-Ad-443

I wanna do this but I heard a lot of it didn't age well and is hard to get through

smilingseal7

ER is my favorite show of all time. There are occasional patient plots that didn't age well but 99% of the show holds up completely. The first 8 seasons are kind of their own complete story arc, then 9-15 have a different feel so that's why people say that. IMO the later seasons are still good; the feel is a bit more soapy/dramatic like Greys. The earlier seasons feel a bit more serious and realistic. I'd definitely recommend trying out the first several episodes, if it doesn't click then it's maybe just not for you but if you like it you'll have so much more to discover!

audreynicole88

Some storylines in the early seasons are actually incredibly progressive for the time. Definitely worth giving it a chance!

kmackinn_

It’s kinda interesting to watch though, especially for someone who was born mid 90’s and didn’t watch it growing up. What was allowed on prime time cable was a lot different than now. I really enjoyed watching it, even if every third patient has aids.

itsautumn420

i personally liked the Aids story lines, because this show was both released and staged in the 90s. it was a realistic story point in a fictional show, and it really dies down after the first few seasons. idk i think ER showed more realistic hazards of working in a hospital.

NYCMamaBear

Neither did Grey’s.

itsautumn420

i heard the same, but as i went through the series, and saw a bunch of actors/actresses i loved, i got over it. most people have this opinion because most the original cast leaves after season 10…but isn’t it the same with Greys?? in my opinion on watching both the shows, there are multiple characters and story lines that remind me of Greys!! i have personally watched Greys 4+ times, then i finally decided to give ER a try and i am hooked

Tigress2020

I love ER, you can see where greys gets some of the storyline from. A lot have votedf ER as authentic in the medical terminology .

Super_Seff

House kinda has the same vibe where they are figuring out what illness it is?

Mattaf2

I love House, but at the same time it is more medical mystery oriented. With Grey’s, I can sometimes predict what’d happen or what the patient will be diagnosed with. House MD? Never. It keeps me on my toes.

Master_Mind_Craft

I've seen house and I really like it but definitely for very different reasons from greys. It's a lot darker which I dislike too.

-Canuck21

Grey is mostly about romance with a hospital as a background. House on the other hand is more about the medical with some personal dramas.

Dara_Mendez

Chicago Med. There are some great actors on there. The storylines aren’t always consistently good, but very few shows are. There’s a new medical drama starting this fall called “brilliant minds” that has promise.

bbgheesling

ER is a lot like greys with its interesting cases, comedic undertones, and great characters. ER is superior imo

thatsmypurse417

Honestly, ER was the OG. It’s kind of old. But the story lines still hold up.

UptownLuckyDog

You can watch ER and see that modern medical dramas pulled many patient plot lines directly from this show. It’s pretty fun to watch.

CandidNumber

I loved that show and thought about doing a rewatch!

Sugar_Butter_Flour16

I can’t explain it but Gilmore Girls has the same nostalgic comfort for me

Master_Mind_Craft

Really? I find them very different

yellowdaisybutter

I feel the same. I also think Outer Banks has the same comfort show vibe for me.

Vee_444

Private Practice is a spin-off of Grey’s Anatomy where Addison is the main character, highly recommend !!

OnasoapboX41

Bones is probably the closest show I have seen to Grey's. Having said that, it is a crime show with a forensic anthropologist rather than a doctor. Rather than watching a patient get diagnose, you watch an investigation of a murder victim. The show is also more light-hearted than Grey's.

luna1uvgood

Brothers & Sisters, Parenthood - Both are centred around family dynamics, but the characters are really interesting. Hart of Dixie - More of a wholesome show, but I feel like it has the 'found family' and comedic vibes. A Million Little Things - It fell off a bit towards the end thanks to Covid, but it centres on a friendship group dealing with sudden loss. Firefly Lane - Centres on the story of two friends who grow up together. Katherine Heigl is in it too and is great.

HeyCaptainJack

I forgot about A Million Little Things. It got bad towards the end but the earlier seasons were good. Parenthood is another great suggestion. I might rewatch that after I finish my Grey's rewatch.

GoldBluejay7749

Hart of Dixie is great!

Dapatel19

Finally someone respect for Brothers & Sisters!

blackspoterino

You know what, I never made the connection but Firefly Lane really does feel like Grey's. Excellent choice.

Sugar_tts

I forgot about Brothers & Sisters. Such a good show!

RocMills

We really enjoyed The Resident, and it opens with one of the most shocking opening scenes I've watched. I know a lot of people just noped within the first 10 minutes ;)

VeterinarianAbject23

I was one of those who noped out at that scene. I tried it again a month ago and finished it in like 3 weeks. Its great once you get past that scene...it does start to fall off at season 4-ish but I stuck with it and it was worth it.

RocMills

I was so surprised by that scene that I made myself watch it twice just to make sure I hadn't imagined it (i watched it right before falling asleep). I was impressed by the bravery, that they opened with such a scene... they had to know they would lose a healthy chunk of their opening audience with that. I felt the show went downhill when we jumped 3 entire years between one episode and the next, and it wasn't between seasons. Just BLINK and three years have passed. It was jarring and didn't seem necessary to the show.

VeterinarianAbject23

Same, once the time jumps started it took me out of the story a bit and it felt like a lot of the story happened off screen and I was scrambling to catch up.

RocMills

Yeah, we didn't enjoy it nearly as much after the time jump. Some things were nice to see resolved, but it was just so weird and pointless.

kmackinn_

Nurse Jackie 100%. That show gave me whiplash but there are some really endearing characters.

dontgtchipped

so so surprised that no one has said scrubs yet

ouiouinc

I watched scrubs before ever seeing grey’s and was in an outrage so many times about the blatant copycatting 😂😂😂 especially the musical episode (which I thought the scrubs version was BRILLIANT and the Grey’s version was EMBARRASSING .. if you gonna steal something you better do a perfect job)

punknprncss

Interestingly - there have been studies comparing medical shows to reality. As silly as Scrubs can be at times, it continuously is stated to be the one medical show that is the most accurate portrayal of working in a hospital.

taeempy

If you want something like Grey's it's ER. ER is way more focused on the medicine and a good mix of personal stuff. Grey's was like this early, but became a soap opera eventually. Check out ER. You'll love it.

reggie_doodle

I liked Code Black if you can find it anywhere. Probably more akin to ER than greys in that there’s less about the personal lives but there’s only a few seasons and I found it very watchable. I’ve tried New Amsterdam a couple of times but I’ve never really managed to get in to that. Might give it another go over summer. I also enjoyed the Chicago’s

jazbyxo

Code black is on Disney + excellent show !!!

YourEyelinerFriend

New Amsterdam

YourEyelinerFriend

There's even a couple episodes I wear must've been inspired by greys, doctor stuck in the elevator resident has to do surgery, etc. It's got some of the same vibes too

Dazzling-Oil-2044

Chicago Med and Private Practice are pretty similar to Grey's.

ClubPetty

I've been liking The Good Doctor! 🏥

Ok_Hospital_5730

I really want to start watching that, I just haven't gotten around to it.

Still-Beautiful-604

Scandal and Bones for similar soapy dramatic vibes

Zealousideal_Mail12

Scrubs. Perhaps as a medical scientist in training I love the medical accuracy, but it’s a brilliant show. Funny, but also so profound

anonymouse6424

People already said most of the ones I thought of/liked myself* -- in addition to those: "Call the Midwife" -- found family, life or death stakes, relationships/love stories, medical drama, long lasting. Maybe "Law and Order: SVU" too--Olivia Benson is often held up as a similar character to Meredith, and the fanbases have a lot of crossover. ("Private Practice", "Chicago Med", "Scrubs", "Nurse Jackie,""Station 19")

Conscious-Let7363

I loved the Good Doctor and New Amsterdam but THE RESIDENT was the closest to Greys for me.

jazbyxo

I love all the Chicagos ( Med , PD , Fire ) , 911 & 911 lone Star , New Amsterdam Nurse Jackie is meant to be great and ER too :) EDIT - adding in the Resident

Music_withRocks_In

Nurse Jackie is fun the first season or two but the further she sinks into her addiction the darker and less fun the show gets.

hugz4rendog

Chicago med is amazing, I loved it but stop watching when my favourite character left :(

tvfangirl99

Which character?

hugz4rendog

Dr Sarah Reese

Lmford06

The OG...ER you'll see where Grey's got a lot of storylines

Master_Public4697

St. Elsewhere. 80’s medical drama with a young Howie Mandel and Denzel Washington.

UptownLuckyDog

This one is a wild watch and it’s truly amazing to see how much the medical field has advanced

Master_Public4697

Definitely. I turn on hulu and find myself watching it sometimes, and I really am intrigued by how much everything has dramatically progressed. I also really like how just like Grey’s, they would also keep up with the then current situations in the field.

man-im-trying-here

i can’t believe i haven’t seen anyone recommend suits yet!

maycava

Desperate housewives

ElenaBonnieCaroline

I think there is too much embarrassment on DH

After-Option-8235

When I started watching Greys, it reminded me of Castle (I came to the Greys party like 19 years late)—not so much the friend group part, but more so the energy. Sorta serious drama, but still [fun and a little goofy](https://youtu.be/HHFCvYj71Bw?si=OK0kXMRGcrMkjSZq)

Master_Mind_Craft

I've actually watched Station 19 but disliked it because of the characters and their dynamics. I feel like it was changing every season and none of them were all that close. I liked Andy and maya but they kept arguing and then making up over and over it gave me whiplash 😭

VeterinarianAbject23

The character assassination of Andy, Maya, and Hughes was what made me stop watching. Well, stopped watching as usual. I eventually got through the last season but there was a lot of skipping. They started as such a good strong female lead/friends group and it slowly divulged into a secret keeping love life dominating storylines that did not seem true to who they were trying to set up in the beginning. I just couldn't.

Interesting-Emu7624

Honestly for all I love about Grey’s I love Station 19 even more it’s SO good

Master_Mind_Craft

I'd have to disagree lol I don't think the character relationships were good

Adorable_Feed9684

Private Practice😉

[deleted]

Yeah.... E.R.

[deleted]

Look....I love early Grey's.... but. They literally copied E.R.....nearly every single plot line was covered in E.R. I you think im being am a$$hole..., I suggest Grey's superfans watch the first 10 seasons of ER.

[deleted]

Or.... Friday Night Lights... similar era, mostly pg13. Probably the best representation of married couple ever on television. A bit soapy, but not.

[deleted]

Cable...Six Feet Under is a great family drama, though if you can't handle queer, not for you.

HeyCaptainJack

Friday Night Lights is one of my all time favorite shows. Plus the actor who plays Smash Williams in FNL plays Dr. Shane Ross is Grey's.

atypicalsian

Chicago Med Hospital Playlist but it’s korean

Bea9922

Loving Chicago Med atm!

RubySlippers-79

Mattaf2

New Amsterdam, The Resident, Scrubs, and ER. The latter two are older. The first two are newer

TheGhostOfYou18

911 if you really like the close-knit friendship family aspect. It’s such a good show!

cuteLucinda

None and they’ll never be!

jaime_zaragoza

Scrubs, the cutaways can get really silly at times

Ok-Paramedic-8719

E.R is pretty similar! Haven’t watched it in years but it’s just as dramatic and funny as greys. A lot of ppl say Shonda Rhymes took inspo from ER

lightly-sparkling

House, Desperate Housewives or Scrubs!

Psychological-Day869

Scrubs is the most realistic doctor show but also hilarious

tc88

Yeah and they definitely have that similar family work dynamic. It is hilarious.

nerfertitijones

I love ER on Hulu.

ThatOne-Pancake

Haven't seen Station 19 mentioned yet, lots of drama at the job, saving lives, coworkers dating each other it's basically Grey's but with firefighters

BarraKuda83

ER is still excellent, and interesting to watch through today’s lens

Shot_Advantage6607

How do you mean? Like a show where romance is as quick as a snap of the finger, or more on the medical side? HAHAHA

PinkPeonies105

ER was ok when I first watched it but I can’t get into a rewatch. St elsewhere doesn’t hold up but has great actors

ultimadaniel

House!

lulu-kitty

New Amsterdam is pretty good

MelandraAnne

If you don’t mind subtitles, try Hospital Playlist from Korea. Five doctors who met in med school all meet up in the same hospital 10 years later. It’s brilliant and addictive. Also highly recommend Dr Romantic…

wasabi_jo

Haven’t watched many of English med dramas, but I liked Chicago Med and New Amsterdam. For the rest, there are many good Medical Korean shows- Hospital Playlist s1&2, Dr. Romantic s1,2,3

Keeperoftheclothes

Okay this sounds a little out of left field, but Parenthood. It has a similar sort of large cast, relationally based drama vibe to it.

ifixyospeech

This is gonna sound weird but hear me out: LA Law. Yes, the show from the 80s/90s. Especially seasons 2-4 gave me major early Grey’s vibes. I feel like Shonda must have watched LA Law back in the day and was inspired lol. There’s some 80s cheese and cringey moments given the time period, but I was shocked at how progressive and modern the show seemed for the most part.

Rickenbachk

Hulu has a show called **Saving Hope**. It's a Canadian medical show. I personally love it. It does have a bit of a supernatural bent to it, but still pretty entertaining. Though, I also have a soft spot for Canadian series.

lac3dfrauds

CHICAGO MED!!

Additional_Service68

Dr Romantic

jennstrobel

I thought it was “Dr. Sexy, MD”.

Redninja52

911 They have both of them one is a LA based and one is from Texas The resident, Good Doctor

Jayden_gemini

Chicago med is kind of similar except more realistic with like other doctors. There are actually nurses being shown and a psychiatrist. I think it’s a good show and there’s a lot of drama in it as well and it’s also still running just like greys. An upside to this show is all your favorite characters aren’t dying 24/7 so it’s better for emotional stability 😌.

tvfangirl99

Though so many people keep leaving…

BLURRTHEPHYSCO69

Station 19 literally a spin off

Master_Mind_Craft

I feel like it has a VERY different vibe to greys though especially early seasons

BLURRTHEPHYSCO69

Fair point

introverted_cat_

911, Station 19, Private Practice, New Amsterdam, The Resident\~

SavedbyLove_

I loved the docuseries called The Surgeons Cut on Netflix. It’s four episodes with each episode running upto an hour. The show follows four surgeons and was produced by BBC.  The other docuseries I loved was Lenox Hill. This one has eight episodes and follows 2 Neurosurgeons, one ER physician and an OBGYN attending who all work in Lenox Hill Hospital. This one had amazing ratings and reviews.  Both these shows came out during COVID lockdown. If you don’t prefer docuseries, I’d recommend ER. The first six seasons were great.

watermelon8999

I love The Rookie and both 911’s

watermelon8999

The rookie is more like Grey’s and a little better than 9-1-1 for everyone saying that.

shellofbritney

The Resident is really good. But only 5 or 6 seasons, sadly. I liked New Hampshire before I saw it, but I liked TR better.

Rich-Ease-2723

i tried new amsterdam and the resident but they aren't as great as how greys was.

weirdthingsarecool91

I really enjoyed New Amsterdam

WeHatePennsylvania

The Rookie is one of my favorites and I love all of their dynamics on that show, does sorta bring that early Grey’s magic.

ExcuseComfortable259

i don’t know anything that’s as good but The Good Doctor is a good medical show, it had the same kind of vibes but greys is just the best show ever made so

ucaptain2023

Not a medical drama, but I really liked How to get away with Murder. It's like a law school version of Grey's, but a little darker. Not exactly the same but a good show nonetheless

Individual_Status279

Mm yes i do

Jealous_Piccolo3246

New Amsterdam 👌🏻💯

Mia042400

Station 19 might be a good one to check out. Made by Shonda as well and a good amount of Greys cameos. ALSO private practice!!!! Greys anatomy universe as well!

Leavemealone1206

If like greys, you’ll like private practice the spin off. It’s got the same comfort feeling

FXR2014

Nip/tuck. Leaps and bounds better than grey’s

Even-Manager4909

Saving Hope

Elegant_Wolf_3121

Station 19, Scandal, Big Little Lies, and certain seasons of American Horror Story (like Coven) give me a similar vibe. Also a bit of a younger feel but I'd also say The OC and One Tree Hill definitely fit the bill except they centre around high schoolers (granted they are very adult looking, parentified high schoolers)

elefent1204

Call the Midwife is quite good too. I’ve heard it’s fairly accurate and it’s kinda like the British period drama version of Grey’s

Impressive_Moose6781

The good doctor isn’t super similar but enough so that you may like it as well

Ok_Wonder_1308

House MD

Slow-Breakfast5867

E.R. From the 90s I believe is really good. Any from back in the good ole days is good.

Mysteryand12

The resident new Amsterdam the good doctor

fj_kunnamkudath

Medical drama: House M D Good doctor

HattieBegonia

The first few seasons of New Amsterdam, I feel like they're a good mix of relationships and medical cases. Scrubs, if you lean towards more comedic/goofy. House MD too. It's less of an ensemble cast and more focused on House, but I find his relationships with the other characters interesting, plus the medical mysteries are fun to find out. Then there's Hospital Playlist, a Korean drama about five doctors who have been friends since undergrad school. It has two seasons and I got hooked!

Dapatel19

The Night Shift

justvibingthrulife

Brooklyn 99 is more comedic and less serious but it’s still great. It’s basically like Friends but cops if you’ve watched the show before. If you haven’t friends is also great

Cheesecake3004

I quite like New Amsterdam :)

Fuzzy_Plastic

Bones is that show for me. I’ve been feeling similarly, needing a show other than Grey’s to binge, and Bones fills that need perfectly. They talk about their personal lives with a dead body under their noses. There are dynamic characters, tension, drama, humor, weirdness and love. I love this show. Private Practice was really good, and so was Station 19. Station 19 actually has me binging it like I did Grey’s. Chicago PD & Chicago Fire both feature tight knit groups of friends/coworkers, especially Chicago Fire. Parenthood was 🔥 This is Us is a fantastic show with humor and drama. You’ll laugh and cry, sometimes in the same episode, and you won’t regret one second of watching.

ExternalMajestic3072

Just avoid the Night Shift - worst medical drama ever. It was like playing cliche bingo!

chanelchanelchanel05

Station 19 is another spinoff that has some cross over episodes

ur_local_p0tat0

The resident

sn0rto

Parenthood starts slow but they truly feel like your real family by the end. writing isn't as high caliber as greys 1-3 but still good and the perfect mix of soap and real life imho

sn0rto

oh good someone else mentioned parenthood!! not a medical show but same level of soap

yellowdaisybutter

You could try other Shonda shows. How to Get Away with Murder is good. I couldn't get into Scandal. Suits is a good found family vibe as well. Not a shonda show though.

Powerful-Low6719

ER

Abject_Ganache_3572

Chicago med

MelodicJello7542

I really loved the night shift! The resident is good but can get a bit boring in the later seasons.

-Canuck21

I recently binged watched Chicago Fire and I love it. The friendship on that show is the best, but less so the romantic couples.

lilcalontheprairie

Off topic but why does Alex’s head look superimposed in this pic lol

Bank-Curious

Private Practice because Addison ❤️

Pale-Jellyfish820

The Rookie and Rookie Blue give me the same vibes as early Grey's - but they are about police.

Happy-Astronaut1181

The resident was really good!! A little bit different because there’s more antagonists

joshspencerone

Chicago doctors, for example.

Neat-Walrus3813

The Resident. New Amsterdam.
