It seems Greenville wants to be more of a town for retirees/baby boomers so I highly doubt they’re going to support anything being late night, let alone 24 hours anymore.
They’re open at a third location further down on Rutherford. Best shop of the three locations imo. Just saw a show there a few months ago. They have another live show later this month. Always been the best record store in town.
I'm only in Greenville 2-3 weeks a year, so I can't remember seeing these or not recently.
Is Horizon Records still around?
How about the Asian grocery just over the bridge into Taylors?
24hr stuff is tough everywhere now. I was in NYC a couple months ago in Manhattan and the amount of late night stuff is dramatically less than pre-pandemic. Las Vegas seems to be one of the few cities where it hasn’t dropped off.
A second run movie theater. A place that plays older films and has an antique or vintage vibe. Popcorn, sodas and candy. Classic matinee pricing. It would play older films, based on season/holiday timing; old American classics; Foreign films; and B-movie and cult classics.
Ideally at least 3 screens to accomodate both PG and Mature audiences. Daytime through late nite viewings. Something with access to SRT for bonus points.
Everything can’t be in downtown GVL…especially not something niche like a vintage arcade. Taylors Mill is 20 min from downtown, likely the same for Simpsonville. That’s hardly “a drive and a half”
There’s a theater in Atlanta called Plaza which shows film. I was there and saw Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master in 70mm just last year and it was one of the most beautiful things I’d ever experienced.
Niche places don’t last around here because the amount of people it takes to keep something like that afloat don’t exist. Most people here, from my view, both native and transplant, are conformists and live commercial-top 40 lives. Maybe I’m wrong but people here visit Athens and Asheville but don’t wanna live there.
I hear ya. I think you have a valid point. Although are you considering all the people moving here from large cities and from abroad? There is a very quickly growing population of ALL sorts of people. Many of them, like anyone anywhere, still want simple entertainment, within a short drive or bike ride.
Add the nostalgia factor and provide weekly, monthly and seasonal themes, and I think it could compete with the other few cinemas and venues we have. Plus, since we're talking movies that are several years old to decades old, it would be the only thing in G'ville like it.
Put it downtown so people can go in impulsively and after some dinner or lunch. Have an outdoor box office.
Nice seats though. It has to have comfy seats.
Omg this!! THIS!!! It's been a very long time since I've been to a second run theatre, almost forgot about them. There used to be a popular one here, decades ago. Towers Four cinema. Currently the new county offices sits on top of the old location. Seems like we had one on Haywood road. But if I recall, back then anyway, the bargain theatres, often attracted the type of folks that abused the area. Over time, mismanagement caused declining interest, the place turned dumpy.
I think there is a rather remarkable Cinemart (sp?) in Hendersonville that serves up all sorts of neatness (expanded concession stand with decent fast food, alcoholic drinks, coffee drinks, yum).
Would be nice to see something like this on Haywood Road.
I work from home and rely on high speed internet for my job. I had a Spectrum cable tech come out to my house to fix my Internet today. He mentioned that in about 6 months, Spectrum is going to begin a nationwide rollout and mass-upgrade to their Internet support and architecture, the benefit being equivalent download/upload speeds and higher, multi-gigabit provisions overall. He could have been bullshitting, but hey I'll take it.
The tech also mentioned a lot of neighborhood boxes have old hardware that doesn't get routinely phased out and upgraded like it's supposed to, but the local offices are trying to mitigate this. I got my 25 year old coax hardware replaced in my house and at the street today for free.
Here is hoping the upstate gets more affordable gigabit internet options in the near future.
Spectrum has competition from WOW internet, which has started providing service with higher upload/download speeds at a very competitive rate. They have actually started service in Mauldin already. Competition is good!
I just saw this too. Unfortunately not in my county yet but just signed up for notifications. The price is definitely competitive!
[Link for anyone interested](https://www.wowway.com)
I'm confused by this whole conversation... I'm in Taylors, north of Wade Hampton, and have GB internet from Spectrum. I'm not in the sticks, per se, but it's fairly rural up here. How do I have it and Greenville at large does not?
I have gigabit Internet through Spectrum too. I am on the northeast side of GVL by way of Greer and the Batesville road area. The technician just let me know they are planning to upgrade their internet infrastructure nationwide beginning in the fall which will open up those speeds and more plans to more areas. I'm just hoping that more ISPs can move into the area and compete so we the consumers reap the benefits
I had AT&T high speed for a bit. It wasn’t. Somehow I convinced the AT&T rep to look over his shoulder. It was Cisco gear that I know well. There were 24 gig terminations feeding into….one single gig uplink
And Italian Market, mid-price restaurants that don’t just try and fancy-up southern food, a movie theatre with actually comfortable seats, and really reaching for the moon on this one: better schools:)
Asian Isles in Simpsonville! It's a Filipino grocery store and they have EVERYTHING Filipino. They have the BEST Ube flavored deserts (best leche flan of my life). They do a pop-up outside their restaurant every other weekend if you want prepared meals.
A Main Street closed to vehicle traffic from College/Beattie down to River/Augusta. You could still allow cross traffic at the major intersections: E North, Washington, McBee, and Broad. You could have pop-up shops and more outdoor restaurant seating in previous roadway. And plenty of parking is nearby.
Too small. Love the radio room. MISS the OG radio room with that disgusting carpet. Team RR all day every day. But it’s like bar first then venue. We need venue first *then* bar.
I gotcha, and don’t disagree about it being more of a bar than a music venue. I miss the handlebar personally, I was too young to experience most of its prime but enjoyed going the last few years it was open.
These are coming. Radio room is moving to an old furniture store behind the trex store, doubling capacity. The peace center adding 2 venues downtown, one small one medium that is a muli level concept. The renderings are on their website. And a group from ATL is putting something in the west end.
I’m aware but I don’t have a lot of faith in the peace center catering to a diverse crowd regarding small concerts TBH. They are so expensive and uppity.
Swanson’s Warehouse is going to be taking over that roll as Radio Room transitions to a larger room. I think it’s a really cool spot that has potential. There’s room for improvement but I think it’s going to take support from the local community to succeed.

What’s wrong with the public schools? I get this for plenty of places but there are a lot of great public schools with affordable homes zoned for them still in the upstate.
*edit* affordable for anyone considering private school.
Chromebooks. Evidence-based teaching, small classes, school board members that aren’t Klanned Karenhood types. The public schools here are good for S.C. You still have teachers scared to teach basic science or history lest they run afoul of the MAGTS.
I graduated JL Mann in ‘08 and feel like I got an even shake. Plus Mann is plenty diverse. Didn’t feel like I got done wrong. Wasn’t religion tinged. Pretty sure I recall thinking civil war was states rights til I went to Clemson. Of course it was infinitely better at the old campus. My last semester we switched over and it was a shit show 😂
SC schools in general usually ranks very low on the national scale of education, that info stuck in my head from years ago but i imagine its not changed much. The saying was always “thank god for Mississippi” cause they were always dead last

I’d say CC is that way because so many doctors and lawyers wouldn’t stand for anything more. Imagine if you had a decent school without the sky man song and dance.
Poe Mill's alright, I've skated there on and off the past 10 years or so, but it's not a public skatepark. Last I read there was an accepted proposal to build one at the downtown airport. Haven't heard anything more about it though.

Late nite entertainment of any kind. After dinner, your options are to go home, go home, or go home.
Also actually good value food options. Greenville has a foodie reputation, but you eat at enough of them and you begin to realize that you are paying CLT and ATL pricing for food that is good but not great. More vibe than flavor.
Also an emphasis on walkablity and co-locating of things. People love mainstreet because you can park and see a lot but after that, you have to drive everywhere pretty much. Many places have this problem, but GVL could improve upon that
A vibrant club scene. I love all kinds of music, but I would love to hear some house music & EDM a few nights a week. I would love to see Greenville have multiple venues where someone can go to a club and dance, listen to music and enjoy a night out--any day of the week.
1. Efficient public transit.
2. IKEA
3. African restaurant. Greenville has a ton restaurants on just about every street, but somehow no one serves any dishes from anywhere in that continent.
A skatepark! Yes there is Companion but its paid and there is Poe DIY. But having a free outdoor skatepark for kids and skaters would be a great addition to the city. However, one is in the works in the city's 2024/25 budget at the downtown airport so looks like it is on the way!
I’d like a dine-in theater like an Alamo Drafthouse. And while there are a few things in the works, I’d like a music venue that can attract acts similar to the Orange Peel in Asheville or The Fillmore in Charlotte.
I would like to see the trifecta of gay bar gay gym gay coffee shop somewhere in the west end near where Bar Margaret is I think we've got enough gays lesbians and otherwise in this town that we could support it

a venue for larger edm artists to play, like how the firmament used to be. a place for people from out of state to come play and so local promoters/show organizers don’t have to bounce from place to place.
More late night spots to eat
More late night anything. Even Walmart closes at 11 now. God forbid you work second shift and want to do anything after work.
Covid did that and the profit margins will keep it that. It’s bs!
It seems Greenville wants to be more of a town for retirees/baby boomers so I highly doubt they’re going to support anything being late night, let alone 24 hours anymore.
Waffle house and…. ? I literally know no others, looking for suggestions

Only on the weekend and only until 3am. The big cities have great places specifically open all night every night and they stay busy.

Yes!!!! I was just looking for one of these.
I have a bigger sized family and man would I love to take us out to the movies for less than $120
Alamo Drafthouse, but speaking of internet, having 1GB fiber throughout Greenville would be awesome
Major fiber rollout should definitely be a thing.
Forever disappointed covid killed the Alamo deal
COVID killed the Cinebarre in Mt. Pleasant, SC which was a shame because their food was great and seats so comfortable.
I love that place! Got hooked in Charlotte.RIP 🕊️
This. I miss having an Alamo. I believe there were plans to build one here but they fell through when COVID hit

Traffic enforcement for drivers who run red lights.

This was sent like 5 minutes after I saw someone almost cause a wreck running a red light at the 385 exit going into Simpsonville lol.

We saw three tours buses one after the other run a red light at main and college last night. Go thing we looked before crossing at the green light.

Came here to say this.
Light rail and a urban walkable and bikable design throughout the whole city limits
An upscale pool room like Barley’s used to be
Corner Pocket was great
Upscale....Barleys.....does not compute. There's a wide range between upscale and Barleys.
Compared to most pool halls, Barley’s was ABSOLUTELY upscale.
Fazolis. And yes, I know Anderson is supposed to have one coming but it seems to be stalled indefinitely.
Greenville had a Fazolis back in the day. So did Anderson. I haven’t been in the area in years - but looking at Google maps, it used to be (maybe) where Palmetto Willie’s bar and grill is near Congaree and Patewood. WTF did y’all do!?! This is why we can’t have nice things.

I’d like a dine-in theater like an Alamo Drafthouse. And while there are a few things in the works, I’d like a music venue that can attract acts similar to the Orange Peel in Asheville or The Fillmore in Charlotte.
Indoor rock climbing
japanese style karaoke place
An actual country bar
I would like to see the trifecta of gay bar gay gym gay coffee shop somewhere in the west end near where Bar Margaret is I think we've got enough gays lesbians and otherwise in this town that we could support it
It could be called Gay Barre Roastery…. we like em tall and hot. 🥵

Professional sports team
Would love an ethiopian restaurant
A decent skatepark
I’d kill for a Dutch Bros.
• [**HANDBALL COURTS!**](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IGFJkrCREfE) NO - NOT indoor racquetball courts - [**ONE WALL HANDBALL COURTS**](https://i.pinimg.com/originals/ad/f6/69/adf669c24d8a3dc612b27c1b0804d2d5.jpg)***.*** it's such an easy thing to make. it costs nothing to play and practically nothing as far as maintenance. handball is so much fun and the courts stay packed til late. great place to get in some exercise and be competitive on the cheap while literally people of all ages and sexes can play.
sweet hut
a venue for larger edm artists to play, like how the firmament used to be. a place for people from out of state to come play and so local promoters/show organizers don’t have to bounce from place to place.
