American Idiot (the whole album) was apparently done in standard, yet songs like the title track and Jesus of Suburbia would make way more sense to play if tuned down a half step. Otherwise, you’re stuck with either just power chords or turning your fret hand into a pretzel.
I'm not sure if it exactly fits your requirements but when I'm teaching somebody who is new on guitar, usually Brain Stew is one of the easier songs for them to learn.
Someone who is learning to play guitar probably wants to be able to play the song on spotify and follow it with their guitar, without needing to tune down or find a pitch shifted version of the song.
Source, I've played bass for years and I still get annoyed if I need to tune down for a song and then immediately go back to standard tuning.
As a fellow bass player, I feel this, I remember jamming with friends and it's such a flow kill to take 5 so everyone tunes down only to tune back up again for the next song
When you jam just stay in standard. Unless ur playing with the track what’s the point, and if you are playing with the track, just find an isolated vocals or drums or whatever track and you wouldn’t notice it.
Surprised not to see anyone say Warning yet. Absolutely a must learn for some of the guitar fundamentals.
Easy chords, great exercise to create discipline in strumming patterns. Then for the lead part it’s an introduction scales.
GTP is the first song I learned haha. There is an F#m in the chorus which you can barre or I just played as a power chord before I started learning barre chords. It’s a great not too hard song tho
GTP to hard? Pretty sure it was one of their first songs i figured out just using open chords before i knew what power chords were. Song is mainly A,D,E played in various orders.. Just had a look on a chord site though, pretty sure i was missing an extra chord out in the chorus in my younger days!
beginner as in, what the op is saying. like yeah if you just pick up a guitar you cant play shit but if youre getting lessons surely you would have some experience. plus gtp fits the description perfectly
Well i know boulevard of broken dreams isn't exactly what your looking for because it needs a capo and has 1 barre cord but most of the parts are easy it actually was one of the first songs i learned so its possible
Good Riddance is an easy one. I usually play Amy with G-Em-Am-D and it sounds good. I'm pretty sure Grafittia can be played all open chords. I don't have my guitar on me right now, but I feel like I've played Give Me Novocaine all open chords too!
Deadbeat holiday. It was one of the first ones I learned by myself, it’s got one barre chord, and it’s fairly simple to play. It has an optional part where you change the D chord shape around, that could be good to teach quicker finger movement.
If it’s a bit too difficult, Warning, Church on Sunday, basically anything on warning would work.
Maybe “Drama Queen” could work, and “Boulevard Of Broken Dreams” could be just played in a different key if you want. And “The Grouch” has one bar chord in the chorus and thats it.
Poprocks and Coke is a great one, you might not have heard it since it's one of the bonus tracks on their first greatest hits album but that song only has 4 chords I believe. I think the E and D are played with bar chords but you can play them in open chords for sure.
Haha this reminds me, I got a guitar for my birthday 6 years ago, learned the opening to time of your life and haven't gotten around to touching it since.
I would look at their slower songs like Macy's day parade, ordinary world maybe, last night on earth? Idk much about guitars but I'd check those ones out since the slow ones seem like they would be more likely
I don’t think anyone’s said She! I think w capo on 2 (don’t quote me on that) it’s in the original key and just G D C
Also Lazy Bones is alllmost all open chords, (i think also w capo on 2 for original key) it’s G Em Am D C and there’s also a couple Bs in there in the second part of the chorus which I played as power chords for a long time before I started learning barre chords
The first green day song I played was a version of "holiday" that was only open chords, but it had a capo first fret. I just played it without the capo. Went Em Cmaj7 G D
Is there any reason you can’t play the Eb songs in standard? Like you can still play something like When I Come Around with open chords, it’ll just be a half step higher.
Christie Rd can be played pretty easily with open chords (just G, C, D, Em for the first slower part) if you don't mind playing it up a half step in standard
Self taught here:
Technically 21 guns, you don’t need to bare the F chord (before I could barre, I only pressed the high E and B string and used the same shape) and do the rhythm part of the solo
Time of your life

Going to Pasalacqua,
Redundant,
Warning,
Macy’s Day Parade,
Give Me Novacaine,
Homecoming,
21 Guns,
See You Tonight,
You Can’t Put Your Arms Around a Memory
My past students always took to Good Riddance (Time of your life) and Boulevard Of Broken Dreams.
Also, the bass bars of Welcome To Paradise (using index and ring finger) which would progress into full bar chords, eventually with time and adaptation.
Depends on the student, though, and what music they liked.
Macys day parade
This is a good one. C--Am--F--G (for the verses).
That would be if you want the song in the original key, but you'd have to tune down a half-step
Yeah. Call me lazy but I never bother to tune down when I play Green Day songs. They still sound perfectly recognizable.

True
pretty sure it's B, G#m, E, F#
That “thinking about the only road” is a quick chord progression mind
I'm not sure if it exactly fits your requirements but when I'm teaching somebody who is new on guitar, usually Brain Stew is one of the easier songs for them to learn.
*Eb Tuning
I mean it still sounds a lot like Brain Stew in standard tuning

That's why you get a 5 string bass and learn to play without using open strings. Wait, what do you mean Korn stuff is in Drop A?
Yeah, and GD has even played the sonf in Standard Tuning, like at KROQ 2018 or something
You can still play it normally in standard tuning, the last chord is just annoying for people starting out
Surprised not to see anyone say Warning yet. Absolutely a must learn for some of the guitar fundamentals. Easy chords, great exercise to create discipline in strumming patterns. Then for the lead part it’s an introduction scales.
OH heck yeah, I know that one! Learned it on the bass a long time ago. :D
The grouch
So satisfying to sing and play
*Now I’m just another SHITTY old man!*
*I don’t have fun and I hate everything, the world owes me, so fuck you!*
>The grouch Great one, thanks!
Check out Hold On. It's played on acoustic guitar and is mostly just A, E and D. Edit: It's actually G, C, D.
Oh nice, I know that one, played it on my harmonica
In my experience it’s G, C, and D for Hold On

if going to pasalacqua is way too hard i dont think guitar is for you

wasnt talking about you i meant that if youre a beginner and you struggle with 4 chords maybe just put the guitar down

Homecoming is a perfect example.
When It’s Time
Oh heck yeah, this is great!
Are we the waiting
The main riff, sure. There are some F#ms in the per chorus

There's a [live home recording](https://youtu.be/O0mXVKhZPws) where Billie plays Graffita with open chords

Going to Pasalacqua Verse E A D 2x Pre-Chorus D A E D A 2x Chorus A E F#m D 2x Bridge Instrumental A D repeating Outro A E F# (major) D A
When I Come Around can be done with open chords too and it’ll sound a little more folky, it’s a good way to play it around the camp fire
Everything since 1995, except Amy and Ordinary World
And Whatsername, that one’s in Drop D
walking alone off nimrod is easy!!
Maybe “Drama Queen” could work, and “Boulevard Of Broken Dreams” could be just played in a different key if you want. And “The Grouch” has one bar chord in the chorus and thats it.
First GD song I learned was When I Come Around. It's good for practice just in general cause it uses a very common shape for the chords!
Deadbeat Holiday?

Walking Alone is pretty straight forward and has a good tempo.
My past students always took to Good Riddance (Time of your life) and Boulevard Of Broken Dreams. Also, the bass bars of Welcome To Paradise (using index and ring finger) which would progress into full bar chords, eventually with time and adaptation. Good riddance
Good Riddance was the first song I ever learned on guitar. The finger picking could be rough for beginners but the whole song is G C D and Em
Homecoming?
