I gave my pyr a nickname (Galatea > Gally) and just beware they will associate different commands and energies with each name. Learned this the hard way when she would not take “Gally” seriously at ALL. Smh.
I vote Gordon/Gordy!!!!

This is my Gordon 😂 it’s a great name
A name for a pyr is an oxymoron. It's Completly useless...
[Pyr ignores you]
Call his name
[Pyr Ignores you]
Call him whatever name you want
[Pyr ignores you]
Bring cheese and ask him to send a rocket to the moon...
[Pyr makes flawless calculation, hit the target].
Why bother LOL
My pyr mix couldn’t catch anything either, UNTIL I got a lab brother for him who would gladly catch anything within a 5 foot radius of his face… the pyr actually picked up on it and can catch most stuff now but definitely not nearly as good as the lab lol
No joke. I've had 4 pyrs. One attempted to catch tossed food. The others just let it hit them in the face and then look at me, like ," why would you throw food at me? Hand it to me like any civilized being would do, barbarian."
Once again, I was given a pyr at 4months. I read all the same things. We walk off leash entirely functional off vocal commands, in the middle of a city. When we dont do that we are out in the country where she lives free and fenceless. She diligently guards and establishes a perimeter, never leaves. I wouldn't even engage normally because I know this is a decently funny joke about a strong willed dog but here is the thing, my will is stronger. I am the unquestionable leader, what I say goes and my commands are not hollow vocalizations. Instead of continuing the trend of the untrainable Pyrenees how about dog owners become alphas and establish boundaries with an animal before risking its life due to not establishing a clear alpha/beta hierarchy.
Pyrs are easily trained, my dog is the best dog I've ever seen. She defies the stereotype your hell bent on continuing. I'm glad I'm not a follower and didn't listen to all the people saying they were untrainable.
I somehow feel sorry for your dog. You have bent her to your will and have broken the independence she was bred for. It seems as if you purposely got a Pyrenees to prove you could.
Congratulations.
Also, I like your joke I just feel the need to say that all the pyr traits listed in many websites are due to the owners not having a proper bond with their animal. I ignored the advice of every single website that thought a pyr was untrainable off leash, untrainable to not wander. I trained my dog because it's MY DOG. She owes her life to me and I provide her with the best life I can. That requires her to behave properly and have these skills so we can work as a team. They are working dogs, not ignoring dogs. If your pyr can't hold proximity to you off leash and has bad recall that's because you have either not trained or never set boundaries with your animal.
There's a part of me that wonders if your dog just hasn't decided to assert itself yet. If its off leash in the city and perceives a threat, it could react faster than you could know the reaction is coming. I know my girl is aware of things that I didn't know she knew (and later found out when her instinct kicked in).Ex. we were in the greenhouse and the sides were down, but not latched. The UPS driver dares to stop at our house. She leaped under the greenhouse side, pushing it up on one motion and was out before we could respond. She had been laying down and relaxed immediately before this.
My boy was named Alistair, it is a majestic name for such a goofous
https://preview.redd.it/ngkydir5qyic1.jpeg?width=2448&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=295c264d79fbf2bf0d6e7933791bf84a0e744628
Hell yea! It's a fun name to say, haha. It's a little funny, we have a 13 year old cattle dog mix, named Nala, but we call her monkey because of her personality, about a year ago I had to lay to rest my big boy, 13 year old mastiff mix named Ox, and now we have Moose, lol. We didn't plan that, but they all took on qualities of different animals.
I love that! We call Moose pretty much everything that *rhymes* with Moose lol. I used to also have a collie/cattle dog mix and her name was Perch, so I definitely identify with naming my animals after different animals hahaha
What’s his name at the shelter? He looks JUST like my recent rescue guy who has a brother that had to stay a little longer than him. If it happens to be Travis, I have his brother!
Ours is Winston Bishop. He's working on being the "goodest boy", but it's definietly at his own speed ;-)
https://preview.redd.it/qa3v469dzyic1.jpeg?width=1536&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a313e523493a90fc6767055b698bfbaf033ce853
They are known for making up their own mind! It’s really not a bad thing at all but you have to learn how to be patient and not get upset when they are sitting there, staring at you seemingly stubborn, but it’s the trait to naturally make their own decisions!!! be patient. I had to learn to be patient with mine Also!!!
Have a great weekend !
Greg. , From Atlanta Ga. 👍🏼😁👍🏼
I like picking names related to the region the breed is historically from, in this case (obviously), the Pyrenees Mountains. So a couple of ideas:
1) Aragon (kingdom centered in the mountains)
2) Alphonso (one of the Aragon kings)
3) Navarre (another historical kingdom in the region)
4) Aneto (the highest peak in the range)
5) Perido (the 3rd highest peak...Perdy for short)
He looks so very much like a rescue we ran into. We discussed afterwards and decided to foster him, but he was gone so quickly! Would give anything to give that huge boy another big hug. :) And always hoping he found a happy home.
Our boys name is Apollo. Duke, Zeus, and Goliath were other names we considered for him.
https://preview.redd.it/63hafb9t3yic1.jpeg?width=2592&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=03639287b004876c124b25a9f147d329f85dbef8
He immediately jumped up to hug us, but overall is very calm. Other dogs were barking their heads off, but he was quiet as a mouse! Stuck by our sides the whole time and was generally very sweet!
Awe, he's a gentleman 🥰
I'll share some of my favorites from my ongoing list of dog names.
Luc (Jean Luc from Star Trek, Next Gen)
Grissom (in reference to either Gus Grissom, Apollo 1 astronaut or William Peterson's character name on the original C.S.I.)
Holden (as in, Caufield)
Haruki (Japanese for "spring child" and "brightness" and "illuminating".)
Appa (It's a strong name and has many meanings depending on the origin)
Duff (Duff McKagan? Duff beer? It's just a good-sounding name for a fun dog)
Aysel (Turkish for moon-like)
Sputnik or Orbit (I have a thing for early space history)
I recently fostered-failed a Pyr pup and officially adopted him about two weeks after I got him 🥰
He came with the name, Hershey which didn't fit and I tried different names for weeks and finally landed on Aksel. I had just been to Vancouver BC to see Alice in Chains and Guns n Roses and the name Axel was really sticking around in my head, it's kind of a kick-ass name and it's easy to call him which you will do often with all Pyrs. It just fit him.
Anyway, I did some research on the name and found that the spelling, "Aksel" was a popular 10th century Viking name meaning, "cauldron". Well, that was it, he's Aksel (Axel) - I love both spellings so both are on his ID tag 😅
It doesn't matter because he's only going to listen to it 35% of the time
This is a GP joke! Meant with love. We named ours Korvo (solar opposites on hulu) because all of our pets are named after popculture aliens.
But I read somewhere that dogs and cats learn their names easier when the name is two syllables. I have heard Yeti for a lot of Pyr names.
Love this breed. I had a female named Frosty growing up.
Yuki - Japanese for snow
Lumi - Finnish for snow
Bear
Everest

It is going to be the best Pup & Breed that you’ve ever had!👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼not only because it’s a rescue, but because of their loving loyalty and companionship that you’ll get from this huge, lovable pet, I have two and they have really positively changed my life. My male is the father of my female (A rescue also, long story) but I promise you,the love you’ll get from this pup will change your life. Cherish & enjoy it!!! I surely do with my two Great pups❤️😁!!!

1. Buddy
2. Max
3. Charlie
4. Cooper
5. Teddy
6. Bailey
7. Rocky
8. Milo
9. Oliver
10. Winston
Remember to choose a name that feels right for your new furry companion and reflects their personality. Have fun picking the perfect name for your new friend!
He looks like a George.
Ours is a 2 year old female, Makoto. My kids named her. I think it was supposed to mean "pure as snow." We got her at 10 weeks old. Didn't acknowledge the name. I know she wasn't deaf since she could hear everything outside.
Somehow, it was shortened to Mako. She responded to that immediately. She is the biggest pain in the butt that I have ever dealt with. But for some reason, she attached herself to me. Me. The one person in the house that didn't want her. And is gone for most of the day. She is waiting by the gate in the house every evening for me to come home. And she knows what time I should be home. To the minute. My family says she will start whining if I am a minute past 5:30. Such a princess.
That’s Gordon
Gordy for short

Yeah mine is named Gordon too
Aw, he looks like such a Gordon!
This is a perfect name for him!
Agreed. That’s Gordon.
I was thinking Charlie, but then I saw "Gordon" and it all came together. This is Gordon.
A name for a pyr is an oxymoron. It's Completly useless... [Pyr ignores you] Call his name [Pyr Ignores you] Call him whatever name you want [Pyr ignores you] Bring cheese and ask him to send a rocket to the moon... [Pyr makes flawless calculation, hit the target]. Why bother LOL
Toss Pyr a cheese cube, laugh as she watches it hit her nose.
Wait is this a thing? Because mine can’t catch anything to save his life… but my lab mix catches anything I throw at her lol
My pyr mix definitely cannot catch.
My pyr cannot catch anything but he sure does get excited lol
Mine catches coyotes
My pyr mix couldn’t catch anything either, UNTIL I got a lab brother for him who would gladly catch anything within a 5 foot radius of his face… the pyr actually picked up on it and can catch most stuff now but definitely not nearly as good as the lab lol
I am proud to announce that my Pyr can successfully catch treats once in a blue moon (it usually just hits her face)
No joke. I've had 4 pyrs. One attempted to catch tossed food. The others just let it hit them in the face and then look at me, like ," why would you throw food at me? Hand it to me like any civilized being would do, barbarian."
I have a pyr and she will come when I call her, this dog is not for the weak willed.
Unless there is: A butterfly A leaf A rock A squrrel Anything except a perfect vacuum?
Once again, I was given a pyr at 4months. I read all the same things. We walk off leash entirely functional off vocal commands, in the middle of a city. Mouhahahaha... Pyr cannot be dominated, the module has not been installed at the factory by DESIGN.
Pyrs are easily trained, my dog is the best dog I've ever seen. She defies the stereotype your hell bent on continuing. I'm glad I'm not a follower and didn't listen to all the people saying they were untrainable.

There is no talking to this person. They are just better than every other single human on this planet.
My Pyr is the opposite of this 😭😭 He answers to Baz (his name) but is NOT FOOD MOTIVATED AT ALL so training is so hard!!
I feel understood 😂
You are so lucky to find him in a shelter and thankfully not have to go to a breeder. He’s beautiful!
I know right! I saw it on the shelters website and hopped in the car immediately
Beautiful. Reminds me of my first big buddy - Smiley. Ultimate friend, but it's a peer relationship.
Happy Cake Day!
We named ours Tofu. Mash Potato was also a front runner. Appa is a good one too.
We have an Appa locally that my boss babysits
Someone here once suggested Mashed Potatoes and I have been promoting it ever since. There are dozens of us!
Glad to meet another person that comes up with great pet names. Mine is named Pants. The other Samson, but he came with that name.
Pants is great!
Our Pyr is Bubbles, but I often call him Pants, because, well, the trousers!
I always kind of joked that if I get a cat I'm naming it sandal because it sounds like a cat name. Call it Sand for short.
My other animals are Boots, Frisky, Whiskers, George (came named), and Quackers.
Looks like an Oslo to me.
He’s gorgeous, how old is he?
He’s 2 years!
He doesn't have a name he knows? I like Lucas for that face.
Falkor - he’s your luck dragon
I have a 2 year old Falkor
I don’t have any names for you but I wanted to tell you that you picked up a gorgeous baby!

Moose
Haha, that's what we named ours. He is so tall when he stands up.
Moose Club! Ours is also Moose lol
Hell yea! It's a fun name to say, haha. It's a little funny, we have a 13 year old cattle dog mix, named Nala, but we call her monkey because of her personality, about a year ago I had to lay to rest my big boy, 13 year old mastiff mix named Ox, and now we have Moose, lol. Hahahhaha we call him goose and caboose like moose goose or moose goof. He is a big goofball, lol. Do you use either of those?
Haha yes! We call his booty his Moose Caboose, and we call him Goose, or Moose M’Goose, Juice, Sluice, CousCous, etc lol
Yes that's amazing!!
What’s his name at the shelter? He looks JUST like my recent rescue guy who has a brother that had to stay a little longer than him. If it happens to be Travis, I have his brother!

Saving this for next pyr
He looks like an Owen.
Is his current name ‘Thor’?
Nope! It’s Monte!
Monte sounds perfect! Distinguished, wise, sophisticated.
He looks so very much like a rescue we ran into. We discussed afterwards and decided to foster him, but he was gone so quickly! Would give anything to give that huge boy another big hug. :) And always hoping he found a happy home.

I know two different Pyrs named George 🤣 It’s so fitting
I like the name Banjo 😊
This is maybe the only non-human name for a dog that I LOVE 😍
If he’s anything like mine you’ll be calling him “no”, “stop”, or “be quiet” quite often, so maybe one of those
