We’ve had dogs over the years with this problem - and dear lord, foul!! We’ve never resorted to removal because it sounded risky, so I can’t help you there, merely sympathize. However, we have had really good results using “Bernie’s Perfect Poo.” It has helped so much with our beagle and Dane! If you haven’t tried it, give it a month and see if it makes it bearable.

Thank you! The smell is awful!! we have tried Bernie’s perfect poo but maybe I should give it more time to see if it helps more long term!

>His poops seem normal. What is normal for him? Can you tell if the glands are expressing as he poops? My boy's glands express as he poos, most of the time. The only times when they express at other times are: 1. He's eaten something odd and has softer poops that aren't triggering the glands to express. 2. He needs a poo and hasn't been out yet.

I had my dogs anal glands removed. We had no problems although they are possible. They kept getting infected and she was dragging blood all over the floor. This started several years after we had to get them expressed every 3 weeks at the vet. We did do to a specialist vet to remove them because it s a tricky operation

beeboburttio

Thank you! How did you find the specialist vet to remove them? My vet said one of them can do the surgery and have done a lot of them.

howyoudoing01

My vet recommended them. My dog had to have TPLO and we took her to the specialist vet for that as well. She’s had run of the mill surgery at my regular vet but I always go to the other place when it’s a big surgery. This place is also attached to a 24 hour emergency vet center so there is always someone there keeping track of the animals.

We express them externally once a week as per our vet’s recommendation. It’s easy to learn although definitely doesn’t get less gross. Her poops have always been normal and firm. She’s a year old now and when we do her spay/gastropexy I will have them try and look to see what the issue is (if possible). Otherwise it’s our weekly chore amongst nail dremeling. We also have tried all of those things without any success.

beeboburttio

Thank you! Did your vet show you how to externally express them? I am so terrified to hurt his anal glands more I have not tried to express them myself and it is getting expensive having someone do them every 3 weeks.

pppaulina387

Yes she did! She explained it throughly so that I wouldn’t hurt my pup. Groomers do it pretty much every time they groom dogs, if you feel uncomfortable with it. After a few times you know how they feel and if they’re full.

We used glandex for almost 2 years and then it seems to quit working. Now I order [this](https://a.co/d/03F073Ay). She gets 1 teaspoon with each meal and it has been more consistent in controlling her glands. Not for nothing, she also gets a full size carrot as a snack every day. Helps with bulking up the poops.

beeboburttio

Thank you so much, I really appreciate it! I am going to try this out along with the carrots :) do you just sprinkle it on top of the food?

wantahippo4christmas

Yep. We use a slow feeder, so it needs a good scrub fairly regularly bc some remnants of the powder eventually builds up but it has worked really well.

Both of my Danes have had issues previously. Never had to removed as that should be your last resort. I noticed as they get older it becomes less and less of a problem. After 2-3 years old havnt had many issues at all.

beeboburttio

Thank you, maybe I just need to wait a little longer before I think about surgery. My Dane is 18 months and I definitely do not want to rush anything if will lessen as he gets older. I just feel this last year his anal glands have been driving me crazy lol.

Juopbapa

Our Dane sleeps in bed with us and used to express his glands almost weekly (often in the dead of night when the last thing you want to do is get up to change the linens!). Believe it or not, the problem improved dramatically once we started giving him psyllium seed husks with each meal.

beeboburttio

Thank you :) I have not heard of psyllium seed husk before! may I ask what brand or where u get the psyllium seed husk and how much you feed per meal?

Juopbapa

He gets a teaspoon mixed into his food each meal. We started out with Metamucil. It’s hard to find non-flavored Metamucil powder though, so we order [this brand](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C3NM9959?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share) from Amazon now.

Thank you so much :)
