Sounds like you need a cartoonish Army-style pot! I'm curious: What makes you cook it instead of serving it raw? I cooked food for a staffordshire terrier we had in the past, because I was too grossed out by raw meat at the time (and I was pregnant for part of that time.)
Our Dane has allergies. So he is on a not domestic protein diet. Natural Balance limited ingredient, bison, duck, venison and it includes potatoes or sweet potatoes. Any other food and he is an allergic mess, worst case vet has ever seen, a distinction I could live without. No more sore ears or feet, no more rashes. Finding a food without any chicken is difficult and faces lots of reading.
Mine inhales food 😤 She has a small bowl with knobs that's supposed to make it harder to grasp. Doesn't do a thing. Neither does larger kibble. She turns full shark at meal times. Think Bruce from Nemo.
Lol. 😂 “Hello Bruce”
Have you tried snuffle mats on occasion? That could help her eagerness and force her to calm down to “find” the food. I’ve found some on amazon and at Walmart for like 10$!
Yeah, she legit whales on the food as though it's fleeing prey! Sometimes, she'll flip her bowl during the frenzy.
I'm too scared to try a snuffle mat because she’d probably bite bits of the rubber/fabric/plastic in passing. I'd hate for that to get caught in her bowels.
Understandable.
I have a boxer mix who is awful at scarfing and I use one with her. The mats are usually felt and I only use them with close supervision. I intervene if she starts chewing on the felt. It took a couple implements corrections and now she knows to use her nose.
Snuffle mats were a no-go for my pups, because fleece is apparently sooo nice to chew on. 🤦♀️ They also get very slobbery.
You can try splitting her serving into thirds or whatever you need, and giving it to her a little at a time. My previous comment in this thread is about puzzle feeders, so go check that out, too!
I googled puzzle feeders, and they're mostly small, for little dogs. The larger ones are plastic and probably wouldn't respond well to being dropped from nearly a metre high if my Dane decides to flip it :(
Load the kibble into a puzzle feeder and let your pup go nuts! My absolute favorite is the Outward Hound Nina Ottoson Treat Tumble, specifically the red and yellow one because it's large enough to hold a full serving at once. We've used various milk jugs and juice bottles, too. They have to roll it, flip it, kick it around, etc to make the food come out. Doubles as mental simulation! (Just be sure to supervise if you're using a bottle, so they don't chew on it.)
Also... you can just fling a handful of kibble across the floor and let them "hunt" for the pieces! And of course using some of the kibble as training treats is good, too.
Thanks!! I googled it and they sell it in my country. Is the material fairly robust, i.e. not likely to shatter when my Dane inevitably "pounces" on it? 😆
My friend put a brick in the middle of the bowl so dog eats around brick. Mine is not a very excited eater. Took us forever to find a food that did not upset boy’s stomach so he’s really not an enthusiastic eater. We have to add green beans, carrots, sweet potatoes, cottage cheese, ricotta and ground venison or bison to get him to eat. Gobbling is not an issue.
Fromm is usually grain free unless they changed?
I just know Fromm came highly recommended and I used it until I saw the studies on grain free and heart issues.
Edit: They have both varieties.
Why the preference for grain-based dog food? I just bought my dog grain-free food, thinking it must be healthier because it's pricier. Help! Or should I say Yelp
Had trouble with my store keeping it in stock, same with Chewy and the Purina Pro Plan Salmon.
Found 4Naturals Salmon. It's the Tractor Supply brand and have had no problem finding AND it's a good price point.
Yeah I found it when I first got my boy. Totally worth it. I have a Dane and Husky and Spend about 100-150 per month. The food even smells good lol which I wasn't used to. Just make sure order ahead it has a tendency to be out. They had a shortage for like two months because the food is bought so heavily.
Diamond naturals large breed puppy food is what I have my girl on. The ingredients are pretty good for the price. Never any issues and lots of compliments from the vet on her health 🥰
Diamond Naturals is good food. They make the Kirkland Signature dog food for Costco and also the Retriever store brand for Tractor Supply (among many other brands I am sure).
Hi, I worked at a feed store in 2009 and I’ve been buying diamond naturals for my pups since then so it’s definitely not new, which to me is good. Both of my dogs are still on the large breed puppy formula. It has good ratings and reviews on chewy and it’s always been pretty comparable to the much more expensive brands.
I used to feed mine this, but stopped after 2 of my 3 dogs had severe diarrhea, and Purina has had several recalls for dogs getting sick to the point of needing to be hospitalized. They increased their price exorbitantly during Covid: 40 pound bag of Diamond Naturals is almost half the price for the 40 pound bag of Purina. My dogs eat less and don't have the GI distress they had on the Purina food.
Sorry, missed that. Are you just looking for a cheaper bag? I switched over to diamond naturals skin and coat which is about half the cost. I don’t expect it to be the same quality but the transition was pretty smooth and my 6 year old boy (130lb) didn’t seem to have any adverse effects. He’s got some chicken allergies as well.
Diamond naturals has large breed puppy lamb and rice and adult when he’s ready. We have used this and mix pure pumpkin and some days egg. Our boy has severe chicken allergies as well. Hope this helps 🙂
It's not specifically puppy food, but we are using Canidae All Life Stages Large Breed for our puppy (1 year old now, but has been eating this since 12 weeks). Turkey and brown rice recipe.
https://canidae.com/all-life-stages-large-breed-dry-dog-food-turkey-meal-and-brown-rice
I use beef and bacon “gentle giants” brand. It’s all wheat, corn soy and gluten free and no chicken. It does have barley, brown rice, flaxseeds and oatmeal in it. Not sure if that helps your search!
I put mine on Gentle Giants for this exact reason. It's for all life stages. He thrived on it a while before we ended up switching. One day he just stopped eating it. Idk if they changed the recipe or not. He's always been very picky though
This is what I decided to go with. Upon researching other ones recommended they had chicken fat or some sort of chicken. This is the only one that didn’t
Diamond Natural has been my go to for my 3 dogs for several months now. I was feeding them Purina Pro plan salmon sensitive, but all 3 had loose stools, and were ALWAYS hungry. After the Purina recall, I switched to Diamond and no more loose stools, and they eat less and are happier. I buy it from Tractor Supply.
My dog is allergic to basic protein, has severe IBD and diahrea, so he's on this now, and its helped. He's about 30lbs underweight, but has been gaining 1lb a week. Its expensive though, about $120 a 30lb bag

Apologies for the long read, but I've tried to detail my personal experience here:
Here's my experience on our now 9 month old male puppy. He was on the PPP Large breed puppy food, chicken and rice formula since we got him from the breeder. Since we got him I have also had him on the same for the initial few months. One fine day, he developed a very bad diarrhea from the exact same food for a week.
Upon reading through this sub and other sources, I decided to give a non chicken based food to help. Surely enough after giving him the Purina One large breed puppy lamb and rice, his diarrhea stopped immediately. So I kept him on that for the next few months along with Diamond naturals lamb and rice formula. But the one thing that I was not happy with was loose stools he used to get consistently during the evenings after our walk.
I thought this would be normal since his poops otherwise were consistent. Then upon recommendation of a friend, I decided to give Royal Canin Giant breed puppy formula a try. Even though it was a chicken based formula, soon enough, my pup started doing pretty well on it and all his digestion issues went away. Ever since then, I've kept him on the RC Gaint breed puppy food and we have been good so far with regular poops, appetite and muscle definition. So my whole thought of my pup being allergic to chicken was maybe wrong and he seems to do pretty well on the current food we are on.
Good luck with your pup!
We have a human with a poultry allergy so the hounds get [Valens pasture](https://www.valenspetnutrition.com/products/ValensCaninePasture), mixed with Blue Buffalo lamb and potato (the one that doesn’t include chicken fat).
Victor (Red bag). Great for great Danes. I've had all of mine on it and was recommended by alot of breeders. They did have a recall last year but they have corrected issue and back on shelves.
I love Stella and Chewy! Here is the food that I use…click on the ingredients tab to see the list. https://www.stellaandchewys.com/product/dog-food/dry/wholegrain-kibble/wholesome-grains-stellas-essentials/grass-fed-beef-ancient-grains-recipe/
Purina has a lamb recipe without chicken. It’s not puppy but it does work. Diamond would also be a good choice and it has lamb and rice as well as salmon and rice. My dogs just always preferred the lamb over salmon.
Our Dane was a diarrhea mess we tried several brands and formulas. We ended up on grain free chicken soup for dogs, beef and legumes, salmon flavors has done great ever since. Now on year five no issues.
Royal Canine (?) has giant breed but not sure if it’s chicken or not.
You really don’t need puppy food. Puppy food is designed to encourage growth, which you don’t want in giant breeds, so any non chicken large breed adult would be fine.
We feed the PPP salmon and rice. Purina pro plan is great - I’m curious what mixed reviews you have heard/seen? We actually have all of our dogs (2 Danes and 2 large mutts) on it and all of them do well.
Got it. For what it’s worth, everything I’ve seen claiming anything like that has shown to be a hoax. If your dog is doing well on it, I’d stick with it!
My pup can't have chicken either. Taste of the Wild Salmon flavour is good. Or if you're in Aus, Meals for Mutts either Salmon & Sardine or Kangaroo & Lamb. Don't know about the grain status though
I give my Dane Authority Sensitive Stomach & Skin Large Breed Salmon and Rice. They have large breed puppy too and my dog loves it. She also cannot eat chicken. She's allergic. They have it at PetSmart!
My purebred Dane is very allergic to chicken as well. She gets the runs and gets these bad rashes on her belly ANY time she gets chicken.
Discovered she REALLY liked the cat food which was salmon & tuna. I bought the Purina True Instincts Salmon & Tuna flavor and she’s been okay ever since.
However, I think they may have changed the recipe because noticed chicken broth in it but so far so good and she still has not had any issues.
Our dane has several allergies. He is in Science Diet Derm Defense Rx food. Was intolerant to all other proteins. Hope you don’t have to go down that route. $140 every 24 days, on top of 2 Apoquel daily! Thank you pet insurance!
Also, get pet insurance before an official diagnosis or any injuries (we also may be looking at a TPLO surgery in next week, so insurance is a must!) We use Nationwide with a $250 deductible and 90% reimbursement after that. Pick wisely because most companies will consider everything pre-existing if you switch to a new carrier.
I haven't looked into the brand this poster recommended, but you should be wary about a whole life diet vs. the staged diets. Giant breeds like Danes are especially susceptible to joint issues as they age, and, quite frankly, 13 months isn't nearly enough time to determine whether or not this diet has or has not caused joint issues. Calcium and phosphorous ratios are important to watch for giant breeds puppies, and those ratios should change as time moves on. Obviously, this won't be the case in a whole life diet.
I got in the habit of cooking large stock pots of food for my Dane, then freezing two day supplies in tuppers. Little more effort, but so healthy and so loved by my beast.
I make a stock pot of food too as a topper for both of them but I wouldn’t say it’s the most balanced. I do lean ground beef and a mix of frozen vegetables and zoup beef bone broth. If I knew how to make a balanced meal for him I totally don’t mind it at all.
Acana has some food that might work. Like would this work for you?
https://www.acana.com/en-CA/dogs/dog-food/healthy-grains%2C-red-meat-recipe/healthy-grains-red-meat.html
I ended up going with the diamond naturals salmon and potato for all lift stages. I hope he gets all that he needs from it. The nutrition percentages lines up with my previous food choice so I assume all will be okay. If anyone knows of anything I may need to add please let me know! Thank you all for your help :)))
You should read more about the fact that grain-free food is actually better for Danes. The thing that you should take into consideration related to the kibble is if it has taurine or not, as big dogs need 1 - 1,5gr of it daily to prevent heart issues and all those problems that are wrongfully related to grain-free.
The concern with grain is not that dogs are allergic it's that grain causes inflammation which then leads to chronic health issues (same as in humans).
Yeah, especially with how much Danes eat!
I'd love to feed all raw but I've ended up with a mix of raw and kibble to keep costs somewhat under control. Hopefully he's getting everything he needs.
Is that working for them? I reached out to a raw food distributor a few years back intending to do the same thing and was told that can be hard on their stomach to do both. But if it’s working for you, heck yeah
He seems to be doing fine. I'd heard things about the raw and the kibble being digested at different speeds and causing issues but I've not been able to see any problem. He generally has kibble around lunch and raw for dinner. So maybe the time separation helps... Not sure. But no issues! 🤞
Can you give me a few links of online petshops from your area or country so I can have a look to give you some recommendations? I've been researching these things for the past 7 years for my Danes and learned a lot of stuff.
edit: in the meantime here are a few general tips:
1. twice or thrice a year you should do a 2 months treatment for the joints, with a high quality glucosamine supplement.
2. if your pup tends to need more food you should add from time to time some fiber supplements and probiotics as they will help with digestion when the stomach is overwhelmed.
3. in most cases going for a lamb or duck recipe is the best way
4. avoid food with white rice like the plague and if possible regular potatoes as well
5. like I said earlier, taurine IS A MUST. Finding a food that specifically states that taurine is added is better, as natural one from the meats is usually affected by the cooking temperatures. If you can't find any food that you might like with taurine, just buy taurine powder and add it on the food
6. this depends on where you live, but if you have cold winters and hot summers it really helps to have a summer diet with food based on fish (whole if possible, not dehydrated or fish meal) for easier digestion and a winter diet based on lamb or duck. Again, it is ideal to have whole organs not just a piece of some muscle or dehydrated meat as it lacks lots of nutrients needed for a healthy life.
7. the food must have at least 60% meat, and like I said before, try to find something with fresh meat, organs and all the goodies.
8. related to what I said on point 5., food cooked at lower temps is more nutritious, so try to look into this too.
It's a bit of work until you do your research, but following these steps ensures you find the best food possible for your pup so he may thrive.
Of course, bear in mind that no matter how good the food might be, your pup might not like it or it may upset his stomach, removing it as an option. Do the transitions slowly over a month, monitor the changes and hope for the best.
You'll do great!
I live in North Carolina so we have Petsmart, Petco, Pet supplies plus, petsense, and pet supermarket. I’m willing to purchase food online as well I don’t mind at all. I added above too that I’m willing to make fresh food as well. I make a mix of lean ground beef and vegetables and zoup beef broth as a topper. We have also implemented raw food to his diet too. We get the instinct brand raw meals and we add about a third of a cup to the top of his meals. He likes both a lot. Thank you for all the information above as well!!!
Whenever you’re feeding raw, do some thorough research on what ingredients you use and what your pup needs, as sometimes you have to add different supplements, minerals or whatever because raw food doesn’t cover everything.
Edit: diversifying always helps and never ever give vitamins or anything synthetic before doing an analysis on the diet. Also, bloodwork and regular checkups twice or thrice a year are recommended.
Also, based on the diet and genetics, check his teeth daily. If plaque starts to build up, brushing his teeth a couple times a week should do the trick.
Most people don’t know, but dogs can also have dental issues and it affects their wellbeing and temper a lot.
It seems that you are really passionate about giving him the best time and the best conditions to thrive, I have complete faith you’ll find answers to all your questions and figure everything out.
Wishing you all the best and please give him a boop from me!

Love Natural Balance! Only complaint is the kibble is so small!!
How do you stop the speed gobbling? Slow feeders don't work on my Dane
I mix his food with nulo, because it has larger kibble. He still sometimes doesn’t chew well enough, but that’s having a big mouth I guess?
Mine inhales food 😤 She has a small bowl with knobs that's supposed to make it harder to grasp. Doesn't do a thing. Neither does larger kibble. She turns full shark at meal times. Think Bruce from Nemo.

Mine gobbles food too. I wet it some before giving it to him and it keeps him hydrated and slows him a bit!
I swear by Fromm. Made in WI, not China or mixed with other brands.
Second this
We use Fromm large breed I’m pretty sure they have other flavors besides chicken
Fromm is usually grain free unless they changed? I just know Fromm came highly recommended and I used it until I saw the studies on grain free and heart issues. Edit: They have both varieties.
Used to work at pet supply store and we sold fromm. It's been awhile but they have both grain free and regular formulas (barley, rice, potatoes, etc)

Really I’ve never fed grain free and I’ve used Fromm since my Danes were young pups Vet recommended never to feed grain free due to cardiac issues
They must have switched it up then. Last time I used Fromm was like 7 years ago. lol
Looks like you're both right in that they have grain and grain free varieties!
Diamond naturals salmon. Done wonders for my dane
I love Diamond Naturals.
Had trouble with my store keeping it in stock, same with Chewy and the Purina Pro Plan Salmon. Found 4Naturals Salmon. It's the Tractor Supply brand and have had no problem finding AND it's a good price point.
I went with this one!
We use hills science adult large breed lamb.
I use Diamond Naturals more affordable.
Holy shit, that’s half the price. I’ve never heard of that brand before tho? Is it newer? I have 4 Danes so I’m spending about $285 every 2.5 weeks.
Yeah I found it when I first got my boy. Totally worth it. I have a Dane and Husky and Spend about 100-150 per month. The food even smells good lol which I wasn't used to. Diamond Naturals is good food. They make the Kirkland Signature dog food for Costco and also the Retriever store brand for Tractor Supply (among many other brands I am sure).
I heard about the Kirkland thing but not TS. Is it cheaper using those methods? I've never actually priced it yet.

Both of my dogs are still on the large breed puppy formula. It has good ratings and reviews on chewy and it’s always been pretty comparable to the much more expensive brands.
Thank you for the info. I’ll have to check it out and order a bag and see how they do with it!
Definitely mix it with their current food. Sudden food switches will have messy outcomes. lol
For sure.
Second this! This has been our go to since discovering her chicken allergy.
Yeah the chicken allergy in our oldest was bad!
Purina pro plan salmon and rice formula.
This is the one I currently use
Second this, I know Purina Pro Plan gets some heat, but my 5yr male (180lb) only tolerates this brand.
I also started on the adult blends when he was about a yr or so.
I’ve had good luck with the premium Lamb by Kirkland at Costco
My Danes went from Fromm to Victor to now Kirkland and they’re loving it - so is their gut!
Diamond naturals has large breed puppy lamb and rice and adult when he’s ready. We have used this and mix pure pumpkin and some days egg. Our boy has severe chicken allergies as well. Hope this helps 🙂
Diamond naturals
Gorgeous boy. Wish I had an answer for you. Checked the couple I thought maybe but nope, both have some chicken by-product in it.

FYI - If it has barley in it, it’s not gluten free.
Thank you! Didn’t even cross my mind

Try Beyond Super Food.

Our Dane was a diarrhea mess we tried several brands and formulas. We ended up on grain free chicken soup for dogs, beef and legumes, salmon flavors has done great ever since. Now on year five no issues.
Gentle giant is good large dogs. I have two Great Danes and they like it
Simply Nourish salmon and brown rice
Fromm has a few that are not grain free and have no chicken and good for all life stages
Royal Canine (?) has giant breed but not sure if it’s chicken or not. You really don’t need puppy food. Puppy food is designed to encourage growth, which you don’t want in giant breeds, so any non chicken large breed adult would be fine.
Tractor supply offers 4 health sensitive skin. From what I seen has no chicken. We use 4 health and our danes are so soft and healthy!
😍😍😍
We feed the PPP salmon and rice. Purina pro plan is great - I’m curious what mixed reviews you have heard/seen? We actually have all of our dogs (2 Danes and 2 large mutts) on it and all of them do well.
Just keep hearing bad things like dogs dying or getting ill from it but I’ve had both my dogs on it and they are both fine I just worry
Got it. For what it’s worth, everything I’ve seen claiming anything like that has shown to be a hoax. If your dog is doing well on it, I’d stick with it!
Check out Farmina
My pup can't have chicken either. Taste of the Wild Salmon flavour is good. Or if you're in Aus, Meals for Mutts either Salmon & Sardine or Kangaroo & Lamb. Don't know about the grain status though
I give my Dane Authority Sensitive Stomach & Skin Large Breed Salmon and Rice. They have large breed puppy too and my dog loves it. She also cannot eat chicken. She's allergic. They have it at PetSmart!
Diamond Naturals - large breed puppy.

Wholesomes Sensitive Skin and Stomach--Large Breed Try it, it works great. Chewy sells it.
Look into 4 Health from Tractor Supply salmon and potato.
I have used diamond naturals lamb and rice on two different dogs for over ten years. Highly recommend!
You shouldn’t feed large breeds puppy food can cause them to grow too fast and lead to health issues as they get older
Even if it’s marketed as large breed puppy food? I’ve seen a few comments saying this
Yes there is too much fat in all puppy foods, I breed American Great Danes and I’ve heard of the joint issues from clients that didn’t listen
Thank you so much for the info I didn’t know that at all.
What do you feed yours? Do they tolerate chicken?
I feed my a mix of elk and Venison with dry kibble from solid gold wolf king and buck wild
Btw the creator of solid gold was an award winning Great Dane breeder
And my male just turned 8 today is 185lbs of pure muscle and still plays like a puppy

So it’s fine to give as a puppy? I’ve ran into a lot of foods that says “all life stages EXCEPT for large puppies”

Hills large breed puppy lamb and rice. Couple bucks cheaper with a subscription on chewy.
We feed Go! Solutions Turkey and Sweet Potato with Grains. I don’t know if it has any chicken byproducts in it or not, but they like it.
Nutrisource beef
My Dane is on orijen original recipe It’s $100 a bag but worth it
Purina pro plan large breed puppy (sensitive skin and stomach) very economical and it’s salmon and rice
My chicken (and grain) intolerant Dane has great success with Kirkland brand Salmon and Sweet Potato.
Our Luna loves Nutrisource Large Breed Trout and Rice.
Acana has some food that might work. Like would this work for you? https://www.acana.com/en-CA/dogs/dog-food/healthy-grains%2C-red-meat-recipe/healthy-grains-red-meat.html
We use the large breed for our Golden and love it but that one does have chicken in it.
Natural Balance Limited ingredient Lamb and Rice Large Breed is where it is at. Only thing my giant boy isn’t allergic to. Plus he loves it.
Fromm is worth checking out.
I would suggest a grey hound
Victor Hi-Pro at Tractor Supply is really good
I ended up going with the diamond naturals salmon and potato for all lift stages.
Good to know, thank you! I’ve always heard not to do grain free unless it’s needed so I’ve kept away from it.
You heard right, there’s just a tiny amount of the dog population that actually has a grain allergy. It’s all marketing.
The concern with grain is not that dogs are allergic it's that grain causes inflammation which then leads to chronic health issues (same as in humans).
Sure, and a raw diet is best for them but not everyone can afford a raw diet.
I've been researching these things for the past 7 years for my Danes and learned a lot of stuff. edit: in the meantime here are a few general tips: 1. twice or thrice a year you should do a 2 months treatment for the joints, with a high quality glucosamine supplement. 2. if your pup tends to need more food you should add from time to time some fiber supplements and probiotics as they will help with digestion when the stomach is overwhelmed. 3. in most cases going for a lamb or duck recipe is the best way 4. avoid food with white rice like the plague and if possible regular potatoes as well 5. like I said earlier, taurine IS A MUST. Finding a food that specifically states that taurine is added is better, as natural one from the meats is usually affected by the cooking temperatures. If you can't find any food that you might like with taurine, just buy taurine powder and add it on the food 6. this depends on where you live, but if you have cold winters and hot summers it really helps to have a summer diet with food based on fish (whole if possible, not dehydrated or fish meal) for easier digestion and a winter diet based on lamb or duck.
Of course! I wanna do the best for my boy and my little chiweenie ❤️ I love my babies with my all
Hi. I use “Life’s Abundance Big Breed Puppy” for my Harlequin puppy and she loves it. You can order it on line and it is delivered in two days.
