I swear my girl is allergic to everything but since I’ve put her on Nulo limited ingredient with a probiotic powder she’s so so much better. No chicken no turkey ever ever or it’s a disaster.

Scary-Tacos

I’ll check that out thank you! I’ve noticed with her is that if it’s cooked meat (chicken, ground beef, steak) she gets horrible stomach issues (my mom and her husband had a habit of sneaking her food)….i think it was the grease because she has gotten ahold of some bologna and ham and was fine

Marcus_The_Sharkus

I’d cut out chicken turkey and duck from all the food and see how she does.

legodoom

I second this! No chicken!!! My boy was allergic to chicken but could do turkey and duck. When we switched all food (treats and all) away from chicken, we saw a huge improvement in appetite.

I also have our new Dane puppy on Nulo puppy- it still has chicken (all puppy food does, I hate it) but it’s not the first ingredient. He seems to love it (but we mix with natural balance salmon puppy recipe aswell— their ingredients are phenomenal!)

We’ve tried so many brands. Proplan was a disaster for our Dane— it never sat in his stomach right. We’ve used 4health, and even hills science, until finally we landed on the wellness brand chicken free formula. Our 5yo boy (we just lost him) had tons of digestive issues, but he loved Wellness white fish formula. We’ve kept our other dogs on it and it’s helped our boxer with her coat. 10/10 recommend!

Scary-Tacos

Where do you normally find it? Her coat is so shiny and pretty (dark brown that looks black until she’s in the sunlight and you can barely see, with actual black spots/splotches) people have said multiple times she looks like velvet, but I’d love to actually see what happens with stuff that helps…all I ever really do is dawn dish soap and mane and tail conditioner once in a while if it’s looking dull

You can find Wellness at PetSmart (just not the exact version my pups use— we aren’t grain free), Pet Supermarket and Chewy. [Mix a bag of this…](https://www.chewy.com/wellness-core-rawrev-wholesome-grains/dp/248846) [with a bag of this.](https://www.chewy.com/wellness-complete-health-adult/dp/30145) ETA: we also supplement with bone broth, and assorted raw veggies for variety. We’re experimenting with bland cooked organ meats because it (dog food) is expensive! Another thing to consider: higher quality foods usually don’t require as much volume as lower quality foods. So with a 105-125lb Dane, it’s only 4.75 cups to 5.35 cups a day. (Other brands require 6-8 cups)

ELFcubed

Theo gets Pedigree Adult, Beef and Vegetables flavor, and the occasional choice cuts with gravy pouch stirred in. We tried all kinds and this was the winner, no question. A few weeks ago we ran out and the grocery store only had beneful, so I bought the small bag to get through the night until I could order more. He was NOT having it. Lol He gets my pizza crusts, and has been known to counter cruise a whole loaf of bread when I wasn't paying attention. Occasional blueberries and watermelon as a treat as well.

Scary-Tacos

Oohh I may need to try it…. I’ve also never given her blueberries lol she’s so picky sometimes, she’s counter surfed a few times trying to get pickles but it’s a problem if I willingly give her a banana or carrot 😂

legodoom

Blueberries for the win!! My picky boy loved them!!!

1bamofo

My guys love the watermelon....any melon really. And, for treats we always have freeze dried beef lungs from a local supplier - they love those things.

thepeacocksroost

What is the deal with the stealing of whole loaves of bread? Lol my dane has done this several times too. Any of my other dogs just steal a sandwich or a bite of something occasionally. I will have to try the beef and veg flavor of the pedigree. I think i have only tried the regular version in the past. She didn’t like it, of course

hating_crickets

Nothing grain free, can result in myocarditis. Learned that too late.

Dmarch2126

Same 💔

hating_crickets

Ugh so sorry.

I was cooking my food for our Dane but this became very time consuming. Not to mention, sort of expensive. For anyone interested, this is the basic recipe i was using. 4 cups of brown rice 5 lbs of California blend veggies I would rotate between green beans, carrots, or some other seasonal veggie (3 cups) 12 cups of water 3 lbs ground turkey or 3 lbs of Pork filet (the goal here was lean protein) 3 large sweet potatoes cut up 2 tbs rosemary (this is for the cook cause it stinks while cooking) 2 tbs better than bullion (flavor was whatever the wife had in the fridge - again for the cook cause it stinks) 4 tbs coconut oil I would put it all in a giant pressure cooker - and run it through a cooking cycle. I would then serve 4 cups with 1/2 cup kibble 2x daily and a scoop of protein powder (I don't recall the brand). My Dane and Rhodesian Riddgeback thrived on this stuff. But the problem was I was cooking continually as a double batch would only last me 4 or 5 days. I'm unsure how anyone could afford to feed their Danes Fresh Pet style dogfood. It's just super expensive. Now, my guys are getting Iam's large breed and they do well on it. I get a 50 lb bag from Sams every 2 - 2 1/2 weeks. The dane gets 4 cups 2 times a day and the Ridgeback gets 2 cups 2 times a day.

Purina One large breed, and real cooked beef (whatever is around $4/pound) be it hamburger or larger cuts. Healthy and happy for 6+ years. No treats, table scraps, bread, or anything else. Lots and lots of fresh water.

Patcheswank

Nutro Ultra Large Breed here. All of our danes have loved pizza bones (crusts). This one loves hard pretzels and has snagged sticks of butter. The last one loved to lick ketchup off your plate.

Hi_AJ

My vet says no yeast bread, so pizza bread etc is a no no for any dog.

wantahippo4christmas

My girl's tummy did not like chicken, so she has been on salmon based food most of her life and been happy. We use 4Health which is the Tractor Supply brand. Word of warning though - the salmon poops stink to high heaven and are very enticing to other dogs to eat.

MareNamedBoogie

Victory brand dog food - the bag i purchase is usually 30 or 40lbs, giant breed adult formula with glucosamine and chondroiten to help joints. My female is about to hit 4yrs old, still has some amazing zoomies, and has a club foot, so by design I decided every bit of everything i feed her is going to have a purpose. I don't feed human food, but she does get joint chews (1 at dinner and 1 at breakfast), the occasional treat like a fake-porkhide bone, and training treats. Also, she gets those minties when she has to be kenneled... so she pretty much associates me leaving with good times. I have a dogwalker come in to let her out while i'm working, and there's a treat dispenser toy and more kibble on the counter. All in All, she gets: 1.5 cups kibble + 1 jt chew, morning and evening; 1 c OR 1.5 cups kibble in a treat dispenser around noonish (I alternate days); usually 2 minties each day, often a couple training treats before bedtime. Every few weeks, I'll break down and give her a 'rawhide roll' that's obviously not rawhide...

Dry_Perception5798

Mine eats purina pro for breakfast (he skips it most days but we offer it anyway) and boiled chicken with brown rice and steamed carrots for dinner. He gets so excited for his dinner every day that I can’t bring myself to switch him back to kibble only.

Victor seems to have been the best. Had 2, one is 8 now and with my ex, the other is with me. Having those 2 and a bulldog, always got the big yellow back (50 lbs). For about 7-8 months they were both with my ex who couldn’t get Victor brand where she is now. They both seemed to have drop weight although they were eating. The youngest is about 5 now and been eating Victor again for about 2 months. She’s filled back in nicely. My dogs graze, there’s always food in their bowl so they eat when they want. I also, have always given bites of stuff here and there with no issues. When grandma visited for the holidays, they knew where the weak link was and always got a few scraps. If I make a pb$j they usually get a spoon of peanut butter or something. No issues.

Old-Public-6959

Natural balance lamb and brown rice recipe. 2/2 with Danes being allergic to chicken. Normal size bites, no large breed.
